The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I'll give it to NoA that Pushmo and Crashmo are better names for those games, but it is fucking dumb that they call each puzzle a Crashmo. Especially since the mo is from sumo.
Mallo is the Pushmo/Crashmo and they should call the actual puzzles Pullblox and Fallblox like they do in the European version, since they call the creator of the puzzles Papa Blox in both versions.

God I hate that NOA messed up the fiction in Crashmo. Literally the worst thing ever!

Nintendo seriously does good work with their franchises

/edit I think chances are they are genuinely, unironically having fun with this dumb phone game

This is neither here nor there, but I don't know why people keep treating the abillity to change the camera angle as something lacking in Pushmo. It's a mechanic that makes no sense whatsoever for that game.

I don't know if you've ever flown in a spacecraft that is falling apart, but "stability" isn't a term that comes to mind to describe it.

Eh, it doesn't really bother me.

I mean I get that they use the flipcam just to make things quick and dirty but a little stability wouldn't hurt.

It irks me that they keep using the Kodak Zi8 cameras, because they have access to several new iPhones that take way better video and are just as easy to use. Better stabilization, better low-light performance, auto focus instead of the little macro switch, and just better image quality in general.

so how are they supposed to take video using the iPhones while they're playing the game with iPhones?

Not to mention that damn clicking noise it makes when it switches.

Not to be all "funkystudent wants more ps3 coverage" or anything but since Mass Effect 1 out on ps3 this week I think it would be cool if they did a QL for it and see how far the Mass Effect franchise has come.

Get brad on it since he is currently playing 3.

It would be interesting.

I would actually be interested to see the state of the PS3 version, I imagine it'll be fairly similar to the 360 one but I hope they've optimised it a bit better at least.

how far it's fallen, you mean.

I'd expect them to QL that trilogy package.

Mass Effect 1 had a lot of good things about it but the part where you play it wasn't one of them. The gameplay was passable at best IMO.

Shooting and combat was lame like most shooter / RPG combos can be when you have stats for things like aiming and the Mako was the Mako. The weapon and armer system was sort of a mess as well.

Still it would interesting seeing them go back and looking at it. They could also do that Killzone HD quick look while the ps3 is hooked up since Jeff has been saying "yeah we will do that this week" for about a month now.

I've actually grown to really enjoy the game play in the original Mass Effect but that's after playing through it many times and now I have a solid grasp on what it does well and what it does poorly, and I know how to manage the clunky inventory (this is on PC, so it's slightly better than the consoles but still not good). I also liked the Mako but I didn't like the crazy vertical terrain you had to navigate on the uncharted planets. Story Mako missions played fine for me at least on PC (I played the Xbox version once when it released but my memory of how it played there is fuzzy).

The second game improved gunplay but at the same time made biotics boring. Global cool down slowed everything down and the cool downs themselves were too long. The biotics I found most interesting, throw, lift, and other force based powers where useless against enemies with a Barrier, Shield or Armor and once an enemy was stripped of those, there was no point to using lifting or throwing them. They were already virtually dead. Also, I hated that they added the heat sinks and their ridiculous explanation for them. They could have kept the cool down mechanic and used the stupid heat sinks as a quick but not mandatory way to force the weapon to cool down without making stupid nonsensical lore changes to make players, used to reloading, more comfortable. Fuck the inventory system, like a lot of things that could have been improved, they decided to just cut it out. I'll take the Mako over the Hammerhead, which was just kind of boring to use.

Third game was a legitimate 3rd person shooter and they improved the biotics some over the second game, with opportunities to shorten cool downs drastically and more explosive power combinations but I still prefer the original and it's individual power cooldowns. Gameplay-wise, I think the third game was good enough to support its combat only multiplayer feature. It was much better than I expected.

Story-wise, I don't think I want to type out all my thoughts on the universe and story again.

I'll just use this lazy shorthand:

ME1 >>>>> ME3 minus the ending > ME2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ME3 ending

Yeah, fuck good gameplay!

Felix got us covered. Mass Effect is a promise. A promise of greatness. A promise they could not deliver on.
