Starring global superstar Matt Damon and directed by one of the most breathtaking visual stylists of our time, Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers), Legendary’s The Great Wall tells the story of an elite force making a valiant stand for humanity on the world’s most iconic structure. The first English-language production for Yimou is the largest film ever shot entirely in China.

If you're wondering why Matt Damon is in a movie about China:

set in 15th-century China which revolves around soldiers searching for gunpowder who come across the construction of the famous wall, and learn that its hurried construction isn’t just to keep out the Mongols, but mystical creatures as well.

Andy Lau! Matt Damon!

That trailer was jarring. "It seems to be a historical film, why is a white guy the lead oh no wait it's a monster movie for some reason"

I love Zhang Yimou's earlier work, but his output in the last decade or so has been pretty plain.

WTF is this and why are there white people in it?

Mainland Chinese cinema trying to appeal to western audiences. Jackie Chan's new movie Skiptrace co-stars Johnny Knoxville and apparently had his highest debut ever, though Chinese box office numbers are always to be taken with a grain of salt because the government and/or distributors have been known to cook the books to make their local movies seem stronger compared to Hollywood imports.

Matt Damon getting that Chinese paper. I guess he wants to further increase his popularity there for future movies, and maybe he was offered points for this shit, although I don't know if that's something that Chinese productions do.

Anyway, this looks like a special kind of stupid.

Haha, they must be paying Damon a lot of money to do that one.

The Christian Bale movie "The Flowers of War" was really good though, and loosely based on stories from the Rape of Nanking. I think it's on Netflix still, worth a watch.

Damon picks movies based on directors, generally. And in a Jason Bourne podcast he did say he probably signed up for too many films in a row and will be taking a break.

fair enough. This looks like something Nic Cage would pass on though.

Well, I've got to hand it to them, that is the most confused/shocked I have ever been watching a movie trailer.

I thought this was supposed to be a serious, historical film about the great wall? Guess I haven't been reading very carefully.

Anyway, it looks awful.

Its hard to call whitewashing on a fictional movie with monsters.

But damn...cmon son.

To be fair, this isn't Hollywood doing it. It is another attempt of a Chinese company trying to break a worldwide hit. Stuff like Flowers of War, Dragon Blade, and the upcoming Bombing.
