Zhang Yimou is the only director able to make Chinese government propaganda pretty enough for me to love it.
You know damn well it was Doyle who made it pretty

Coincidentally, Andy Lau and Matt Damon played the same character in their respective films, Infernal Affairs and The Departed.

Now, make me a movie with Tony Leung and Leo DiCaprio.

This quote from the Angry Asian Man blog is hilarious and on point.

You can set a story anywhere in the world, in any era of history, and Hollywood will still somehow find a way for the movie to star a white guy. You can count on it.

Isn't China making this movie?

It should be noted that this movie was made with Chinese money, and is the work of one of the most celebrated Chinese directors. But it's definitely a Hollywood blockbuster, written by Hollywood screenwriters, in English.

"First and foremost, this is an English-language film, and a Hollywood blockbuster," Zhang tells Entertainment Weekly. "It was already very clear in the script phase." And a Hollywood blockbuster needs a white guy.

Here you go. LOL

This article goes into a little bit about Zhang's relationship with the government. It should also be noted that many of his earlier films were actually banned in China and he was found to be in violation of the one child policy, so he may not have too much say in what he is creating. The Mainland government has been trying to portray modern China as a shiny happy place but if anything the censorship is even stronger than in the 80s.

That's damn sad to read, even if it was very much expected.

Still, i have a soft spot for his more grounded (if melodramatic) films, like Story of Qiu Ju, Not one Less, Happy times... and of course, one of my favorite movies in general: Keep Cool.

I wasn't a huge fan of his Wuxia stuff, but it was still enjoyable to see.

I hope China manages to get the head of their ass, and he gets to do good stuff again.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I am really curious to see if Black Panther is released in China and if so, will it do well at all. That and I can't wait to see the posters that feature none of the cast but a giant black panther statue or maybe Klaw front and center.

Andy Lau! Matt Damon!

That trailer was jarring. "It seems to be a historical film, why is a white guy the lead oh no wait it's a monster movie for some reason"

I love Zhang Yimou's earlier work, but his output in the last decade or so has been pretty plain.

Yes he has lost the plot in his quest to chase film awards.

He was much, much better when making smaller arthouse films.

I'm curious as well. However the film should do extremely well domestically. This film will probably be the biggest budgeted Black film of all time. Just like The Great Wall is the biggest budgeted Chinese film. I guarantee Black Panther makes way more money than The Great Wall.

I don't think it will do well, if it even gets released there. The government limits how many foreign productions get screened and the reason some of the other comic book movies even got released there in the first place is because they added in scenes with Chinese actors and/or were co-produced by Chinese companies. There is still a lot of pretty overt racism towards black people in China -- remember the detergent commercial from a little while back that had a black guy get "washed" into a Chinese one. It wasn't too long ago that it was fairly common that you would see people in movies in blackface as a joke.

Is it the studios fault that Americans are too racist to watch foreign films, especiallly with Asian leads?

Haven't all of these english speaking Asian blockbuster films with white leads still failed in America?

Like I could understand if there was a proven formula of success for this.

Goddess Constance Wu going off.

I cant remember the last time I saw a trailer get proportionally, exponentially more stupid as it went along. Like, um Matt Damon in China thats bad but ok...wait a minute that fake dragon thing??? holy shit this dialog...noooooo these effects and that dragon thing why is this happening

This shit looks fucking trash, Asian actors/actresses can't even get the lead roles in films about their fucking countries. Thank god for the white savior who will most likely master everything the Chinese warriors know in a day then proceed to save them because they can't save themselves.

I seriously hope this movie flops so bad it kills Matt Damon's career, but I know it won't.
