The Gundam |OT2| Another 5 years of Gunpla, Origins, and GUNDAMUUUU!

I've digested Thunderbolt now.

This is a hard show to discuss, as my UC biases are strong. I enjoy UC ALOT, but I guess that means new media I hold to a higher standard than a lot of things, at least in terms of "canonicity". Because I'm a huge nerd.

I watched this with my roommate, who doesn't like Gundam that much. In fact, he hates it (normally)

This show/movie was good. Now, the uber nerd part of me was screaming the entire time... but the story itself was great. Io and Daryl's rivalry was FAN-TASTIC. I'll just say it. This was the best rivalry since Char/Amuro. In fact, this was the only rivalry I've actually enjoyed besides that one. Every other rivalry in the franchise is too concerned with invoking the imagery of those two. This one had it own strengths. These men become consumed. In fact, I thought this show was about the dehumanizing nature of what such a rivalry can do. It was pretty overt. Daryl is a much more sympathetic character than Io, but even he succumbs.

Some real nightmare imagery. Loved the way battles looked. Loved peoples reactions. I don't like the thunder in space. What is the logic there any way?

In terms of art... Mixed bag for me. The mecha and scenery are great. I'm not a fan of the human designs though. They're not terrible, I guess. But not my cup of tea.

Music was great, as what it's use. Dat jazz. Classy stuff. Voice acting was mixed/bad. I was watching the dub, which is not something I would typically would do, but my roommate ONLY watches dub.

I give it a 7.5 /10. Maybe an 8. I think I'll have to watch it again. The more I think about it, the more i like it. My roommate gives it a 9/10. He describes it as a "real treat".

I loved Thunderbolt in just about every way (including the dub). My favourite show / movie / whatever from Gundam in a long time.

It's really fantastic. I almost don't want them to make a sequel. The second arc of the Manga shits the bed hard

Oh no, really? That sucks to hear.

I need something similar at least. Those visuals and dat music. It's such a fun watch.

edit: maybe fun is a bit inaccurate since the story and characters are kinda dark

I've started getting into Gundam after a friend got me hooked on Gunpla a few months ago, and had a really good week falling into the Gundam abyss; finished rewatching the only series I watched growing up (G Gundam; the english dub is so fun) and powering through Build Fighters for the first time, and it's phenomenal- maybe displacing G as my favorite series so far. Not sure if I should just continue to Try next or jump back to working through the UC with Zeta.

I was getting a little stir crazy waiting for my Gouf Custom and Sinanju to show up from Amazon, so I picked up a Thunderbolt GM to bide the time for a couple weeks, so of course my package arrived a couple weeks early the next day. The GM is a rad design; but the Gouf might be my favorite kit yet- I'm a real sucker for giant gatling guns on my mechs. Looking forward to starting the Sinanju sometime next week. Also picked up Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 because I haven't been consumed by Gundam enough this week, and I've needed a good podcast game anyway.

Gundam Seed 16 & 17

I always wondered why they couldnt be content with having their families survive, isntead they had to chase down Tiger and get squashed, and then cagalli trying to defend their actions in front of Kira, the only one who could actually do any damage to the BuCUEs.

Also this was kind of painful as a Sai fan, when Kira pushed him down the stairs and Flay always pushing him off :(

Kira just shits all over the bro code, he'll steal your woman and beat you up afterwards.

Athrun would never go after his best friends girl.

Yeah, though it does have one really awesome plot thread that I would love to see built around
Fleming is so fucking obsessed with that high from battle after the events of the first arc, that he goes to massive lengths trying to recapture that, selling his shares in Fleming industries, going to earth, just needing to recapture that rush

Also, SEED is shit and gets worse and worse

Picked up two Gundam Astaroth kits today to make them symmetrical! Had to go to two stores that were 20+ minutes apart to find them both, though. >.>
Really excited to get back into building more.

Wubby, looks like I'll be throwing some money your way shortly. I just put in a HLJ order for the HG Gundam Legilis even though my Sinanju hasn't even shipped yet, LOL

Something is wrong with me.

I don't think the Earth arc is that bad, but it definitely will put off diehard UC fans since the author starts to take a lot of creative liberties. The part adapted for the anime was playing it relatively safe. Io is a much stronger character in the second part and Bianca is a great addition to the cast.

In a moment of weakness I bought RG Exia Expo Version. Every piece with some exceptions are painted metallic. It looked amazing and I gave in.

I used to be heavily into Gundam in my highschool/college days. This was back in the days of VHS and super expensive DVDs.

I watched the original and Zeta, then jumped to wing and seed. I recently finished 00 about a year ago and took another hiatus.

For some reason coming back to the series and storylines now has me a bit confused.

I just watched all of Iron blooded orphans, and was super connected again. My problem is now I am through the first 25 there and decided to watch Gundam UC 0096... What am I missing here, is it like a complete retelling of the first series but condensed into 16 episodes? Am I missing something?

I believe UC 96 is Unicorn Gundam which takes place after ZZ Gundam and Char's Counterattack. So yeah it sounds like you're missing a couple of things.

Anything that can help me get caught up quickly without losing too much?

Since you've already seen 0079 and Zeta, you'll be fine watching the movie trilogies for both as a refresher, if you need it.

If you're really in a hurry to catch up, just read a summary of ZZ online.

Watch Char's Counterattack.

Then stop watching RE:0096 and just watch the Unicorn OVAs. 0096 kind of kills the pacing with how they cut the episodes imo.

Speaking of, ZZ is on blu-ray in the west and CCA is coming out next month.

Excited to see CCA again. Been ages since I've watched that.

Watch ZZ and Char's Counterattack. You don't even know what happens to Char and Amuro or know what a Puru is or about all the cyber newtype experiments.

I did see char's counter attack, but none of zz, so I guess that is where this takes off from?
The asteroid/colony didn't hit earth, and everyone thinks char and amaro blew up into that particle cloud around it correct, except 2nd episode and char is right there with longer blonde hair to chow a passage of time?

Umm I'm going to just sit here and not correct anything. It does have ties to ZZ as well though.

Timeline: 0079 (MSG) > Sometime during 0079 (08th MS Team) [OVA Optional] > 0080 (War in the Pocket) [OVA Optional] > 0083 (Stardust Memory) [OVA Optional] > 0087 (Zeta) > 0088 (ZZ) > 0093 (CCA) > 0096 (Unicorn) > 0123 (F91) > 0153 (Victory)

You can also watch the Origin OVAs that take place before the One Year War that are about Char. It's from the Origin manga that is a retelling of the first Gundam show.

Marida ruffling Banaghers hair was such a great scene, and they had a normal conversation. We needed more of these scenes with them, the only person who Banagher can share his own feelings and such with.

if Zinnerman dies Ill be so mad, almost got angry when Angelo pointed that blaster at him

The race to Industrial7 is on, I cant wait.

Also if you're going to watch UC definitely don't skip War in the Pocket. It's the best non G Gundam thing ever produced by the franchise.

I would like to say Thunderbolt is awesome!!! Hopefully the reception of Thunderbolt persuades Sunrise/Bandai to create Hathaway's Flash and remake CCA (into an OVA with BC and Char's backstory), and Crossbone, F91(OVA/full series).

I convince myself that they won't remake stuff like F91 but I also want to believe.

I'm looking forward to DTL's upcoming Unicorn reviews. I got back from work and will finally start that Zeta rewatch.

Oh you aren't the only one. Probably another member of the FR Express in the making.

This scene always makes me laugh, no way was she just kidding, she was actually serious. Though does that mean she things Duo is ugly, rude.
I think at that point some dissension in the ranks was happening you can bet master Treize talked her out of killing Duo since he actually values and respects the lives of the Gundam pilots.

Treize fucking loves them Gundam boys.

All out there getting sweaty in their suits, one man war of honor, fighting the good fight.
