I've digested Thunderbolt now.
This is a hard show to discuss, as my UC biases are strong. I enjoy UC ALOT, but I guess that means new media I hold to a higher standard than a lot of things, at least in terms of "canonicity". Because I'm a huge nerd.
I watched this with my roommate, who doesn't like Gundam that much. In fact, he hates it (normally)
This show/movie was good. Now, the uber nerd part of me was screaming the entire time... but the story itself was great. Io and Daryl's rivalry was FAN-TASTIC. I'll just say it. This was the best rivalry since Char/Amuro. In fact, this was the only rivalry I've actually enjoyed besides that one. Every other rivalry in the franchise is too concerned with invoking the imagery of those two. This one had it own strengths. These men become consumed. In fact, I thought this show was about the dehumanizing nature of what such a rivalry can do. It was pretty overt. Daryl is a much more sympathetic character than Io, but even he succumbs.
Some real nightmare imagery. Loved the way battles looked. Loved peoples reactions. I don't like the thunder in space. What is the logic there any way?
In terms of art... Mixed bag for me. The mecha and scenery are great. I'm not a fan of the human designs though. They're not terrible, I guess. But not my cup of tea.
Music was great, as what it's use. Dat jazz. Classy stuff. Voice acting was mixed/bad. I was watching the dub, which is not something I would typically would do, but my roommate ONLY watches dub.
I give it a 7.5 /10. Maybe an 8. I think I'll have to watch it again. The more I think about it, the more i like it. My roommate gives it a 9/10. He describes it as a "real treat".
