Opine what you will regarding this list and states with lawmakers opposing nationalized healthcare.

This annual ranking, published by the United Health Foundation, looks at 22 indicators of health, including everything from how many children receive recommended vaccinations, to obesity and smoking rates, to cancer deaths. (Insurer UnitedHealth Group funds the foundation.) Scores for each state are determined by gathering data from a variety of government and nongovernmental databases and then calculating how much each state is better or worse than the national average for each measure. Click here to see the report. The below chart lists the final results in addition to rank changes in specific categories over the past 20 years.

Thought California would be higher

Ah, right in the middle. A good place to be.
not really. that only talks about your state's health relative to other states. says nothing about how healthy you are overall.

Being "in the middle" is not necessarily good or bad

Yeah, I wasn't sure which end of the list meant what. So I looked for Texas, found it at #39, and took the hint.

Oh, and as for my native Florida at 36, I feel like it doesn't really communicate the actual health of the state. Miami's a fairly fit city. Head into North Florida, though, and you're looking at walking orbs of goop.

The interesting thing about Massachusetts's high ranking is their expansive state health care program, which attempts to achieve near universal coverage.

doesn't that suggest the cost problems are structural, rather than in lifestyle? :D

Just because you look "fit" doesn't make you healthy either. Miami seems like a "superficial fit" where people will do anything for the sake of looking good, not for being healthy. Big difference.

Please note that I said "seems like". Don't have firsthand experience and I'm making broad generalizations. But hey, thats what GAF is all about!

Wait, how is Vermont in the top 10 for obesity when it's the healthiest state? Am I reading the numbers wrong?
Yeah, you're reading it wrong. The higher up you are on the obesity chart, the less obesity your state actually has. I know, it's kind of confusing.

When in doubt, look for where the deep south states are. That's where the fat is.

True enough, but doing everything in your power to look good usually means eating a little bit healthier and exercising more. ;)

49, not surprised.

My hometown was the worst. It was pretty much impossible to do anything but drive everywhere. There are no sidewalks on almost any road and the speed limit everywhere is 45-55. Good luck running or cycling anywhere.

Surprised at Maine being number 9 considering the amount of drug addicts I know.

Wait a second, how the fuck did we get up so high in the obesity ranking (Indiana #7)? Did we kill all the fatties? I remember reading or hearing somewhere that we were smoking too much and had obesity problems...

Maybe all that smoking we did made us thin! BRILLIANT!

You win again Vermont. Little Rhody will kick your ass one day. Our state bird is a giant red cock. What's yours? Oh yeah, a "Hermit Thrush," What the fuck is that?

YEAH! 18 MOTHER FUCKERS!

Edit: Damn, that sucks for Mississippi. I know a lot of people from there.

Yeah. Moving there in 1.5 years, and I'm not looking forward to lifting fatties at the hospital there.

I'm thinking of hanging a Twinkie from a fishing pole on the far side of the CT scan table so that they see it and lurch over toward it by themselves.

I remember visiting Nevada after a stay in New York and being marveled at the human manatees that flooded the streets. Flabby, massive bags of human flesh that somehow had managed to gain movement. And Las Vegas is the fat fuck capital of the world. Then again, I wonder how many of those people are tourists from afar.

lol yeah. Lot's of fatties live here. Sucks Nevada is so low, but we don't usually do so well on any list.

Thought it might be like that. Same thing happened to me in the country corruption thread.

:lol At least you have a way to pass the time.

Not too surprising.

If you're managing your health, comparing yourself to the average of any state isn't a good idea.

We need healthcare reform. Preferably single payer with regulations encouraging competition, and incentives for patients to choose doctors that are more effective. But we shouldn't confuse general healthcare as the reason why America is so sick right now. America is sick because of the food. Fructose leads to obesity.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18703413

Sure early diagnosis of cancer and other chronic conditions will save some lives, and we should do it. But we're better off with preventing the vast majority of cases from ever happening. The FDA should regulate foods that have toxic chronic intoxication.

#30, take that New Mexico! Not surprising that most of the top states are mountainous ones.
I think that may be a coincidence XD

I doubt many ppl actually climb any of the mountains XD

Live in Colorado now so that's good, but originally from Louisiana so that's bad LOL, in LA's defense though I can see why its so low. It does have the best damn food in the nation.
