The iOS Gaming |Thread5| From Zero to Gaming Hero

I got my iPod touch yesterday (went with the 64GB...traded an old iPod to Amazon and only paid $354 total for it). I can tell you that the screen on this thing is amazing. Battery life is great too. You won't be disappointed if you go for the Touch.

The (retina) screen is amazing even on my old iPod Touch from 2010. My only problem with it is it's pretty slow and hangs quite a bit when moving from one thing to another. The new one addressing that with a faster processor makes it a no-brainer if you're after an iPhone without the phone.

Still think the iPod Classic was/is better and quicker as a pure music player though, can get annoying relying on a touch screen for skipping through tracks, pausing etc.

Reposting from the Nintendo financial results thread:

3DS + DS software revenue: $180 million/month ($1.1 billion from April 1 to September 30)

iOS 3rd party software revenue: $490 million/month ($2.2 billion from June 11 to October 24)

I assumed that the average price of a 3DS game was $35 and that the average price of a DS game was $25. The App Store numbers are based on the numbers Apple quoted in their June and October conferences.

This includes non game software. I'd guess that on the App Store this makes up about 35% of total sales (the majority of the top grossing apps are games).

This doesn't include Nintendo's digital sales, which perhaps would add an additional 5%.

Note that the App Store numbers don't include 1st party software, but that's all non-gaming software.

Publishers on the App Store get 70% of total revenue from their games, for (3)DS I think it's about 50%.

So based on the above assumptions:

iOS video game revenue: $320 million/month

iOS video game revenue for publishers: $220 million/month

3DS + DS software revenue (including digital): $190 million/month

3DS + DS 3rd party software revenue (including digital): $66 million/month

3DS + DS 3rd party software revenue for publishers (including digital): $33 million/month

I made a lot of assumptions, but regardless it's informative. If some of the assumptions can be improved, let me know.

I'm a junior, so can someone else make the the thread? I titled the original post, "the king is dead, long live the king" but that might not be the best idea for the thread title.

I was a doubter but since getting my iPad 2, I've been playing more iOS than anything. I don't even play PS3/DS/Wii/360 anymore, and actually sold my 360. I still play PC though, but I play iOS more because I can play iOS games while browsing NeoGAF on my PC.

Shardlands is incredible and it's out now. Gameplay video:

Interesting. The game does look to have high production values, but is the game itself any good (I've been burned too often that way:)? I get a Hamilton's Great Adventure vibe, which I liked, but the mechanic of having enemies always chase you back to those force fields seemed annoying.

I'm not sure that as its own thread is a good idea period. All it will do is ignite a thread war:)

I wonder how many games those numbers encompass on each platform. The amount each game makes on each platform is a significant number that shouldn't be overlooked in any analysis.

Sounds like the thread creator gets to make an informative thread that also leads to entertainment. That's win, win!

As for the number of games, all of them. So about 125,000 iOS games and 1500 (3)DS games, most of which are no longer sold. About 300 of these are 3DS games.

Even though 3rd party publishers get 10 times more revenue from iOS games than 3DS ones, the average 3DS game obviously generates far more revenue. Approximately 40 times more.

some in (and out) of game art from our first game, Robotanika - built for iPad with UDK, fingers crossed it'll be on the App store mid-November...

Man, that's rough for iOS developers. The amount of devs on for 3DS is probably VASTLY smaller than on iOS.

I got extremely excited when Theme Park were announced for iOS, I were sorely let down.

I won't let that kind of disappointment get to me once more. I'm not getting my hopes up for RollerCoaster Tycoon which were my favorite PC game back in the days.

so im cruising through Puzzle Saga... does it get much deeper than just chaining 3-of-a-kinds?

how do I use the hero magic skills?

The hero magic button is at the very bottom. No I dont think it gets much deeper. It definitely gets harder though the only strategy is in deciding which characters to upgrade.

Bought True Skate on a whim today after hearing some buzz a few pages back in the thread. That's an addictive little toy. Plays to iOS strengths. I actually feel like it might have some proper depth if I sink some decent time into it.

Well, I finally did beat both other bosses, so perhaps I'll nab those expansions as well. Addictive game!

I highly recommend even the Itaqua campaign, which I just succefully completed on my first try, seeing the best ending too.
A bit too easy IMHO (I was a bit lucky in the very end to see the best ending), but damn awesome.

I'll replay both campaign for sure, but I'm a bit sad...I really hope they will add more campaigns awesome as these.

What's the point though? It's purely a troll thread. Why do we care? I don't.
I'm happy playing iOS games right now (aswell as XB360 and PC) as are most people in this thread. I don't need to convince others to increase my enjoyment.

Irrational ignorant haters can keep lying to themselves.
Give it a few years and those same people will have strangely disappeared. It'll be like no-one ever hated tablet games.

No IAP unlock from what I can see, just IAP currency.

Starts at AUS$1.99 for 20,000 punches and goes to AUS$20.99 for 450,000 punches.

Gameplay seems a little frantic compared to Mage Gauntlet but I'm sure it'll all 'click' soon.

i'm kinda curious to see if N.Y Zombies 2 provides a decent single player experience, or if its just shoot zombie missions with no story or variation in gameplay.

From the TA impressions it sounds like the story and single player experience are the games real strengths, and while the actual moving and shooting mechanics are solid they aren't as polished as Dead Trigger.

Went ahead and got both. I don't usually splurge on iOS games, and this was actually my first IAP, but this game deserves it. It's a game I can see keeping around for a good, long while. Cthulhu kicked my ass the first couple of tries, though.

Just finished Lunar. Great game. Terrible joystick, landscape controls. I got cramps in my hand. D-pad in portrait works great, though..

Either way, hope more PSOne games come over, but I seriously doubt it due to licensing. But who knows..

Hopefully 2 will be ported someday.

I grabbed letterpress. Not feeling it at all. Seems too simple or something.

I'm enjoying it, it's way satisfying to smash out a big word that uses up the last of the tiles and puts you ahead. Reminds me of 9-ball in billards, in that you always have to be wary of someone setting up a nasty game-ending trick shot.
