The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Yeah I would think maybe we just start from scratch and get everyone to go on and add their info? That way we know it's fresh. This is going to be way easier to maintain than the list of Carc names in the Carc thread and it should ideally be fresher info.

Okay what you could do is go to File > Make a Copy and add all the games in the order you think would make sense...or you could just give me a list if you're not comfortable editing. Pretty simple though, just copy and paste the title over and edit it to a new title.

Finally pulled the trigger on Carc and Ascencion. Damn you Astrolad and Heel!

The iOS Board Gaming Thread (AstroLad, what have you done?)

:)

Astrolad is responsible for my descent into physical board gaming. Me and my brother spent like 4 hours playing Dominion and only got 4 hours of sleep when he had to be up by 6 to catch a 9 am flight.

Also, whats so special about Cut The Ropes: Experiments?

Hey Gunman Clive is pretty good fun! It's a surprisingly fun and tight arcade platform shooter, has a really nice feel to it in the physics and shooting side, evokes lots of fond 16 bit memories.

My only two suggestions would be to please let me put the dpad where I want it and have it stay there. I like how you've got the high buttons on the right hand side, but the dpad that slowly moves back down is annoying, and the fixed dpad is too low.

Other would be how about checkpoints at each screen rather than for each stage? As it is, it's a bit annoying to die on the last screen and have to replay the whole stage. By doing it on a screen-by-screen basis you could even make stages longer and harder without them getting too annoying to replay. But then again, I guess the concern could be for players to screw themselves with no health at the start of the screen, eh?

Anyway, great little game, I will definitely finish playing it.

Man, everyone keeps trying to sell me on an iPad. So I have already have a netbook which I mainly use to code in Visual Studio 2010, play Europa Universalis 3, and MAME. None of which the iPad does so I'm not paying $500 for that. I wanted something portable that I could fit in my running backpack and use on the bus ride back from work after I jog in, so the iPad is a total no go.

Can't fault me for asking =p If you want to be really secure on being able to run everything, you could still get an iPhone and just not get phone service on it. If the latest Touch indeed has a gyroscope it'll run most things, but the smaller amount of memory might make newer games unstable especially if you're not religious about killing tasks. I had low memory issues even on my iPad 2 (which has twice the memory the Touch does), part of why I ended up upgrading to the 3rd gen early.

Gunman Clive will be officially released tomorrow, so I though I'd give away a few promo codes. The game is a sidescrolling action game (MegaMan clone) set in the old west with a funky artstyle. It's a universal app and has iCade support.

Ha! That trailer is amazing, I hope you do well, it looks like time spent well.

All this time that I've lurked this thread with the board game talk and freaking Jeff cannata podcasting has me really wanting to try this head on. I'm thinking of starting with a coop game for me and the SO, maybe ghost stories or forbidden island from what I've seen so far. Is one noob friendlier than the other?

Yea, the lack of checkpoints is a decision I've been struggling with a bit, and it might be a bit too retro/hardcore for the platform. I personally feel something would be lost if there were too frequent checkpoints; maybe the levels could have been a bit shorter than they are now, but adding checkpoints to the existing levels I feel would result in too frequent checkpoints and too low risk. When there are lots checkpoints it feels more like a series of isolated challenges; but I guess that's a more common way to design levels in modern platformers.

Roughly speaking the levels are about half the length of a traditional megaman stage, which usually would have one checkpoint along the way, so it should be about the same. Except you'll never run out of lives in Gunman Clive, so I'm hoping people won't find it too unforgiving

Forbidden Island is much friendlier.

Well and truly missed the code, but it doesn't matter. You well-and-truly have my money :)

that looks fucking great, you got my .99
Not to split hairs, but it's actually 2.

How much? I can't even find the developers website.

It's not out yet, but has been submitted to Apple last week, expect it in the next few days. Developer is Playdek, the guys who made Ascencion and Food Fight.

Any reason why the longer games like Caylus aren't on there? Would be nice to use this as place to get games for Agricola and Eclipse when they finally come out.
Work in progress. When or if a thread goes up it'll be more complete.

Guys, I just got a $10 gift card. Any suggestions for a gen 1 iPad?? I'm looking for a Bard's Tale but I have too many RPGs waiting in the backlog.

Here's my little review for Gunman Clive that i thought I'd share, I wrote the same for the appstore but it hasn't registered it (yet?);

It's a great little platformer with extremely charming art design and a smooth feeling, however, there are some minor flaws.

The bad: the d-pad doesn't work that well for me. It's locked in the lower left corner (should be easy enough to fix to make it an option to realign it?) and IMHO it's a bit too small to allow for proper fast movements. However, that is most likely a limitation of the platform itself. Also, no checkpoints are included, which can make it from frustrating from time to time, but it's a minor oversight - there are way harder platformers out there, still.

The good: It looks FANTASTIC. The western style looks amazing, including soundtrack and flimmer-background. Also, the game feels very smooth, in a sense that the animations are very well done and realistic. The levels are challenging (again, no checkpoints), but mostly fair. Again, it just looks and feels freat.

TL;DR at the beginning, but even shorter: Get it, try it, for the price it's definitely worth it!

Retina update for the iPad version of Monsters Ate My Condo went up today and it looks phenomenal. I forgot how fun the game is--definitely one of my favorites on iOS.

Just got hooked on power of coin thanks to some people in this thread

Do your coins regenrate when the app is closed? And if so at what rate? I keep running out but then a god goes down and its a coin frenzy for about 5 mins :)

Sweet we gotta make this thread now. :D

Didn't even know Caylus had async though I've only halfway learned it but I'd love to try it out. Also Tigris & Euphrates which is a classic.

Relatedly today at game night we had a game of Kingsburg run long so we only had ~30m for another game. Usually with setup and teaching would be mostly screwed but busted out the iPad and Carc and ta-da. :D

Cleared the users and added what games I know of (or found on iPadBoardGames.org). Let me know if you think anything should be added or removed. The spreadsheet is now publicly editable. Anyone reading, feel free to add your information.

Now all we need is a thread! Astro, want to combine the Carc and Ascension OPs, then add games you think are worth covering? I'm out of my depth on that.

Cool man I'm gonna try to bang out something quick & dirty tonight (much like the Carc thread was).

Added myself. Cant wait to get slaughtered. Is Samurai supposed to be Samurai BloodShow? I didnt know that had multi

Noooo not Samurai Bloodshow, but rather Rainer Knizia's Samurai. Totally different. :P

Nice! I guess have a mod lock the old threads down with the new link once it's all set up?

Also, not sure if it's worth having a formula to automatically sort the user list alphabetically. It might get pretty confusing when your information disappears from the bottom to be sorted once the list gets longer. It's not too much trouble to go in and sort the table every once in a while.

Beril - Gunman Clive looks fantastic - I can see you've put in a lot of hard work!

One comment Id like to make - I've always found two way d-pad (left and right) work much better than the four way (up down left right), e.g. Bike Baron and Super Crate Box had great twitch control, but something like Mage Gauntlet which is probably the best of the four way controls a bit fiddly. I suppose as its a mega man type game you need to have the down button to duck?

Also I'd like to ask - how did you get on with Helium Boy in the end? I'm in the same sort of situation as you are with our app sQuiz: Reel Trivia, it just doesn't get any sales anymore (however we haven't promoted it yet, we haven't sent it out to review sites as we haven't put the multiplayer mode in yet). I remember reading a post about how you weren't getting very many sales but then you made a press release on PRMAC and got some sales that way. What I've found is - trying to sell a good quality mass market game (especially a trivia game) is really hit and miss on the iOS store cause there's so much crap out there. It's probably easier to make a twitch based game and sell a few units in the first few months and let it be. Most of the hardcore gamers who are the initial people who buy games don't buy trivia games really.

Also to the iphone devs out there - are there any good free app a day sites that do it for free? Free app a day costs $3000 and we're not ready to invest that money yet until we make some money. It blows my mind how much they make (5xapps a day for $3000 minimum) thats some serious money for advertising some apps!!! ($5m a year) I registered for freeappcalendar - but they don't do voting anymore and its $200 a day - not bad i admit. So any free ones?

Yeah I don't think you need to at all actually might be cool to know who the newer people are.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting a site to promote it. If you set your game for free a bunch of sites should automatically pick up on it. I set Haunted Hallway to free for about a day and a half and got about 40,000 downloads. I should have kept it for free for a little while longer.

I wonder if we should add more Knizia game to that list - I also own Ra, Medici and Ingenious. They're not that well known though, so I'm not sure... (Ingenious is LOADS of fun though, everyone should get it.)

What's a good card building game for beginners? Figure iPad is a good place to start to keep costs down. Solitaire options are good
