The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Downloaded the free version of Galaxy on Fire 2, and all it did was to reinforce my thoughts that any game that uses an on screen joystick is crap. The game is great, and it'd be awesome to play it with a proper controller. But I will not spend a penny on it to play on a touchscreen.

Touchscreen is and will always be of limited use in action games except for specific circumstances that don't require 3D movement. It's great for strategy games though or any game where your moves aren't constrained by time.

I guess I'll just have to wait for the PC version.

I never had any issues with the on screen joystick, so it is far from crap least for me.

STAR COMMAND LOOKS FUCKINGAMAZING.

that is all.

agree.

Looks like I'll check out Crow tonight. Anything else to look out for?

I've been playing BugPrincess 2 nonstop despite the fact that my scores are not being recorded. I figure I'll be much better by the time the bug is fixed.

I thought Galaxy on Fire 2's on-screen joystick controls were great. I never had any problem controlling the ship. I just found the game itself to be incredibly dull.
I have never seen any on screen joystick that I ever liked. Don't understand how you can play with that garbage. Gyro controls are also very unwieldy on the ipad so that's not an option either.
That's why I avoid games with on screen joysticks and in app purchases for gold/etc.

You should check out the fling joysticks they help a lot with on screen direction pads. I use them all the time for NBA JAM and the bards tale. they also work great for GTA3. I havent tried the iphone version but i have the big ones for the ipad and they work great.

I find it hard to believe this game is worth 4 whole gumballs.

in re:
Crow

dev posted this over on TA.
seemed a fairly honest assessment of their own product.

also, they apparently plan to release the proprietary engine this is running on as free open-source software at some point after release

Good questions, I'll answer them:

The gameplay can be divided into 2 parts, free roaming, soaring above the Earth levels that are about exploration, story and a more passive experience. The other part are action levels, which you find throughout the world and when you play them you get a 3rd person railshooter style play. There are a number of challenges to these levels, each is very unique and emphasizes reflexes and quick thinking. Overall the game moves at your pace, when you're ready to do the next part it's waiting there for you.

There's plenty to find and do in the game, but I think not an overwhelming amount. The game also has cinematics sprinkled throughout, but we rarely show you a really long cutscene. Most are brief and provide you with the setting and context you need.

Some of the controls have changed since this site and others last looked at the game. We took in quite a bit of tester feedback and made gameplay improvements to the point where the final game is very solid, clear and smooth experience. Hopefully you'll see we put alot of effort into that, we take it very seriously.

I can't guarantee you'll like it or that you'll feel it was worth the $4.99 price, however we did alot of polling among internal and external testers on price-to-value ratio and most said it was a very good deal at $4.99. We had some recommend $3.99, others said it was worth $7 or more. I would gladly drop the price to 99 cents tomorrow if it looked like we were selling so many copies we could sustain that price point and still have a business for future games. So we're trying it at 4.99 and we'll see how the market reacts (although the market may reward us since Kotaku says it may be the greatest iPhone game ever).

On play time, we set out to make a game that lasts 2-3 hours on a single playthrough and we have analytics and tester data that backs that up (some can do it faster, some take longer depending on how much optional stuff you go after). The game is also designed to be replayed, there are meaningful choices you can make in the game that change a number of details, so you can replay it and make different choices to see how that affects the story. We also have a number of hidden "challenge levels" to find and unlock where you can go for top score, and we support leaderboards/gamecenter for high score comparison and achievements.

Hope I answered all your questions clearly, let me know if I can add anything else!

In the past hour I have gone from knowing nothing about Crow to salivating for it's loveliness. Tomorrow is going to be a good iOS day for sure.

In the meantime I have been plowing on through my backlog, and Aquaria is the next game in my sights. I must have put 4 hours into it today at least. While the controls are pretty dumb, it's still very playable and the metroidvania progression is always rewarding in these types of games. I feel like I'm approaching the end now, maybe only a couple of hours left, so I'm looking to get it finished for the weekend so I can binge on these new releases.

There is something very satisfying about finishing a story game and deleting it from the device. The quick and cheap nature of iOS means that usually yuou'll download a game, play it for a few minutes and move on. It's quite refreshing to actually play some of these games through to completion, and it reminds me that there are lots of really amazing games on the system. We get stuck in this release/rinse/forget cycle in this thread - do yourself a favour and go back to the games you promised that you would.

This may be old news, but Zombie Gunship is really fun. You're an AC-130 operator defending a bunker from hordes of zombies. Imagine if the AC-130 sections from COD4/MW2 were made into their own mini-game. Pretty fun!

It went free recently too...it is a pretty fun game.

Man, I *always* miss these posts by Mario by only a minute or two, it's uncanny! :)

Will be F5-ing all day in vain hope!

As a new iOS user (just purchased my first iPad, never had an iPhone), I must say, how good is iOS gaming?! 'Tis thriving, it seems. Very happy to be on board, but the sheer quantity of apps/games available makes it hard to sort the wheat from the chaff, so thanks to all in this thread for doing what you do. Cheers!
