Starbase Orion just had another huge update making the game even greater. Go buy now.

NEW FEATURES IN v1.1.3

• Custom Starbases
Players can now design custom starbases in the ship designer. Set your weapon and ship systems to best match your fleet tactics.

• Upgradable Ships
Scrap ships directly to production points on a planet, then use that production to quickly build an upgraded ship.

• Precise Orbital Bombardment
Orbital bombardments have been improved; you can now specific generic targets (marines, buildings, population) and you can equip more bombing systems per ship.

• Weapon Damage Modifiers
Weapons now do different damage based upon if they hit shields, armor, or hull, providing more variety and strategic decisions about how to outfit your fleet.

• Civic Funding
Joining Economic Funding and Economic Hoarding is the new Civic Funding; use your planet's production points to increase growth rate.

• Stacking Penalties
Some ship systems have been given a stacking cost penalty; as you stack more of the same item, each new item costs more. This encourages more diverse system configurations, while still allowing those that want to stack the ability to do so.

• New Technologies
Advanced colony ships, Marine Barracks II, Efficient Tax Collectors II, changes to Pacifists and Warlords Overhauls

• Balance Changes
Prior to this update the mechanics favored production/expansionist races. Numerous changes have been introduced to balance the game for other imperial strategies.

• Hi-Definition Graphics
Experience the glory of galactic conquest with full HD graphics for the new iPad!

• Bug Fixes
You reported them, we fixed them! Thank you so much for everyone helping to make Starbase Orion the best it can be!

Coming in v1.1.4, one of the most requested new features for Starbase Orion: Colony and Fleet Leaders!

Just picked up a new iPad this morning. What games make the most out of that retina display?

A couple of my favorites that all have retina support:

Anomaly Warzone Earth HD
Infinity Blade 2 (actually runs at 1440x1080)
Galaxy on Fire 2 HD
Sword & Sworcery EP
Starbase Orion
Aquaria

Wow, the toucharcade dude seems a delusional idiot.

Btw, finally found our own thread's artist, Tunesmith's new banners are amazing, can't wait to update the thread with the new designs.

Bought Blot today for .99. Great art style. It's a simple cave adventure game, but it has charm and has challenge mode. I suggest it.

Anyone got any recommendations for iPad puzzle or RPG or point and click adventure games? Classic remixes I like too. I bought my iPad yesterday and want to get some suggestions. My favorite games on my iPhone were Secret of Monkey Island, Peggle, Plants vs. Zombies, Mirror's Edge, Final Fantasy, etc.

Gunman Clive is Eurogamer's App of the day. Congrats beril, how's the Mac version coming?

Thanks, saw it a while ago

Wish you hadn't reminded me about the mac version though; I haven't started yet. It'll probably be a while before I do; I need a break from this project and want to start something new, but I plan to make time for it sooner or later. PC version is out now at least; www.gamersgate.com/DD-GUNMAN/gunman-clive, and will be up on Desura as well soon

When I first joined GAF in 2004, they hated PC gaming, too. You would read all the same, lame memes and ideas that they mock now.

Give it a couple years, they will come around.

The hatred towards PC gaming was never as bad as towards iOS gaming. Somehow apple and casual gaming combo brings out the worst out of everyone.

Good controls? Doesn't support iCade does it?

Not played, but this is from the App Store description:

  • 60 Missions
  • 9 Endless Arenas with High Score Leaderboards through GameCenter
  • RPG elements and upgrades
  • Retro Inspired Graphics and Gameplay
  • Hats, Amulets, and Rings, oh my!
  • Universal 1 Purchase for all your devices.
  • iCade Enabled

Do you think you will continue with platformers for your next project?

GAF-At-Large was totally off on the DS too. I remember all the scorn they heaped on it because of the shitty specs, dual screen gimmick, and stylus controls.

Well, opinion on the DS changed within a year.

iOS gaming isn't really some new foreign thing people don't understand. It's been four years, it's been figured out, people know the good and bad of it.

Well the DS kinda sucked at the beginning (and I owned one at launch, mostly because I'm a sucker I mean I own a Vita and 3DS now ffs) and so did iOS gaming (even though I was in on it even back when that crappy poker game was the only thing). If the market is big enough things evolve for the best.

Question... Is there any convenience in buying AppStore card for eu?
I'm considering carcassone,King of dragon pass and starbase orion and they cost a chunk :/

Cool, I'll update the list.

Yes, worth the asking price if you like SCB and games with upgrades ala Hook Worlds. No IAP either, the music is great too.

Pretty much was on the fence until I saw no 'top iap' on the page.

Devs need a lot of balls to do that these days (and it probably isn't the wisest financial decision', especially for a dollar game.

Doesn't hurt that the game is pretty great (jumping against the sides is a bit glitchy though).

Thanks sladeums, I got the code.

Can't believe I'm just discovering Pocket RPG. I can't help but feel this game is sorely under-appreciated. Bar none, the best Diablo clone I've come across on iOS.

Is there any way to add apps to a wish list when browsing the app store from my ipad? I don't see anywhere to do so.
I wish. I would love to be able to make a wish list in the app store. In addition, I would love to be able to see my friends wish lists and gift them apps.

I thought I saw a thread that was updated with the best iOS titles? Can't seem to find it now so I might have just been dreaming such a thread existed. Anyone have a link to it?

On the subject, iOS Diablo clone suggestions would be nice.

Kinda sucks we keep asking for clones of games on iOS because the big developers won't actually make iOS versions of those games.

Didn't like it. The lack of persistent leveling turned me off (I think it's this game).

I think it works really well, actually, and kinda makes each new dungeon feel like a new game almost. You still get to keep your skill and weapon upgrades, so it's not completely starting over each time. You have to admit, though, there's zero grinding in this game. It's balanced very well.

Beat infinity blade ii. Is there any incentive to this game after finishing the story? The purpose of clashmobs seems to be to earn cash and weapons but I think I already have the most powerful ones...

Because I've been digging Ascension on the iPad so much, I've been looking at other card/board games. Noticed two games on sale this week: Reiner Knizia's Skyline HD & Bang the official game.

Anybody play then? The Bang card game got a good review on Slide to Play.

Not played Skyline.

Bang is good. But nothing like Ascension.
Check out the Bang 4th of July Edition...it's free and a lite version of the game to give you a good idea of play.
It's fun...pretty simple, tho..nice amount of polish, especially for a buck.

If you're looking for card and board games you need to be looking over here:

Anyone even remotely interested in a substantial yet portable CRPG experience on iOS owes it to himself (though perhaps a version of himself from 15+ years ago) to check out Silversword. It's basically a thorough and surprisingly accurate recreation of the classic Bard's Tale experience, only filtered through an original fantasy world.

It's universal, and though was designed with the iPad in mind, works just fine on an iPhone as well. It's been seeing a ton of support from the developer and has been constantly refined and improved upon since well before the release of the full version in early 2012. He's been working on some post-game content and a full expansion pack, but that hasn't stopped him updating and fixing the current version of the game.

It's really remarkably well done and like Legend of Grimrock, scratches an old, nostalgic itch in just the right ways. It's not the prettiest game around, but it's definitely giving The Quest a good challenge on the iOS CRPG top lists, IMHO.
