The Sandbox is pretty cool!

But please tell me there is a way to get more mana without using IAP. I need 1000 to buy a battery and I dont have enough mana T_T

The freeplay achievements (the trophy on the main menu) give you extra mana, but most give only a little. Unless the game gives you a daily mana handout or something like that, it doesn't seem like you can earn nearly enough mana to unlock everything without paying.

I played Punch Hero last night. A boxing game (ala PunchOut!) with a career mode.

Just another iOS game ruined by a horrible progression system that forces the user into having to use IAP to get anywhere. Unless you feel like battling the same opponent 200 times you get your stats up naturally. The graphics are really, really poor also.

It's a shame, because the bones of the gameplay mechanics are solid and perfect for the Ipad. It just needs to look better and not have a shitty progression system/money grab.

I don't mind buying IAP stuff but when it's kind of forced, fuck that skipping this app.

This Army of Darkness game is waaaayyyy funnier than I expected it to be.
I just downloaded it on a whim and ended up playing for hours ... and I don't even like tower/lane/castle defense games. Even the ballyhooed Kingdom Rush, Bloodshow, Creeps left me shrugging ... but this is just too much stupid good fun.

It doesn't even really seem all that great technically, yet I can't stop playing...plus it's free.

I didn't know about this game until I saw your post, downloaded the game, and played for probably 6 hours yesterday, no kidding. It's addictive and fun. I wish you could have multiple save files because I don't want to erase everything just to start over

I don't know why, but IAP make me so jaded. I would rather buy a complete $10 game than a $2 game in which I would have to spend $5 IAP to unnlock everything. Irrational economic behavior for sure!

I think my main gripe is that most games with IAPs simply distill the 'fun' parts of gaming (discovering new areas, levelling up, new foes) and put a price tag in them. Making your platform a for-profit skinner box and belittling the 'art' of making a whole experience. It's here to stay, so I just hope it evolves to more than just making the grind less painful.

Many of us would rather do this, but I imagine the big reason devs do this is rather than have everyone pay $10 up front, hate the game, and rate it poorly, give them a small taste of the game for cheap and allow an unlock for more content. I don't like this practice, but it exists.

The other shitty IAP is stuff like, "$0.99 to unlock the secret dungeon that has secret bosses that drop the best gear" is...annoying. Some IAPs are fine (I'll support a good game/dev and buy stuff like I did with Junk Jack's IAPs), but some are just ridiculous. One of the Zenonia titles allowed you to buy skill points. That's COMPLETELY ridiculous. Other games followed suit, which is ALSO ridiculous.

FreeMyApps finally did it. After all this shit I've downloaded and deleted immediately for points, they put up the free version of Where's My Water. Despite the many recommendations for it, I'm really over the "3 star these 50 levels" formula, so I passed it up. And now along comes this sponsored apps offer, which is the only way ever they could have gotten me to try it. And because it's an awesome game as everyone else already knew, and because the dev of Where's My Water is pretty smart, I ended up giving them my money after all.

I already owned the full game but had to download the free version anyway to get credits, it's a lot of fun ;) and the devs are great, they regularly update the app with big level packs for free :)

This and Fairway Solitaire are probably the best sponsor apps so far :D

I'll never complain about a business model implementing IAPs like that. It is when you can't advance in the game without spending $0.99 to refill your stamina meter that I get upset and will voice dismay.

Yeah. I guess there IS a difference between IAP that feels like most downloadable content in the consoles (dungeons, characters, etc) and IAPs that are basically a cheat code. The former is infinitely more tolerable than the latter.

I don't think I've run into the type you are referring to (for paid apps), but just imagining that makes my knuckles white.

Why oh why do I keep playing the Simpsons: Tapped Out?

It's like a parasite. I'm level 20, the game has horrible support, it's buggy as hell, and the IAP is of the sleaziest order.

The stupid donuts, fuck those donuts.. I'm not paying for them, as to buy the actual buildings and what not would be like $100.. nuts. They almost never give out donuts either.. my mystery boxes each week? $500. Every time. $500. I think I accumulated about 15 to 20 donuts total by Level 20. Now there's zero way to get a donut without cash, or the weekly mystery box that gives me.. $500.

What ever happened to that game? EA pulled it from the app store a few days after launch, but that was like two months ago and it still isn't back. I wasn't going to bother trying it until then becuase bad support for a game not on the store doesn't surprise me...

Plus I normally can't stand Framville type games.

Ballistic is my favorite Radiangames game but Super Crossfire is the one that made me fall in love with the developer. Ballistic only one buck? Super Crossfire FREE? Shit, son... Grab that shit.

Also, not a game but goddamn I keep being impressed with how competent Beatmaker 2 is for music production... Just discovered that it has excellent Dropbox integration, which makes managing a large sample library etc a ton more convenient on my 16GB iPhone 4. Only limitations I run into is that I like to use a LOT of tracks, fx and filters and I end up having pre-render them into new samples cause my iPhone 4 struggles to do it all in real-time... Only happens with really complex projects though, the app's performance is great. I love how they have such an intuitive and effective interface that works well on a small screen and doesn't sacrifice depth. Everything on my Soundcloud is made with it: http://soundcloud.com/reese015

They pulled it because of some terrible terrible glitches. That and even to this day actually loading the game is at best a 50/50 shot.. you have to close app and reload multiple times just to get in.. which kind of destroys the idea of this kind of game.

Yet, I'm a sucker for the Simpsons.. and what they do have is pretty neat if you are a fan. I'm not sure where EA is with it now, it's been months without any real word.. thinking they are just gonna cut their losses on it.. which is a shame.. with some help it's worth messing around with for fans of the series.

Man, can you imagine what's going to happen when the "fuck you, we're turning the servers off, love from EA" message appears when people have invested like, $200 or more on donuts? Chaos.

What kind of gameplay does The Sandbox have? I'm confused by the description. Is it just building stuff?

Nosferatu WTF. The game every midnight wakes me up to play it. It even changes the unlock button to play. I've never seen an app that does this. How do I disable it?

I think I found my new favorite mobile gaming website: Pocket Tactics. Their reviews are well written and unlike TouchArcade it seems like they actually use scores below 4 and their interviews are great. The recent interviews with the devs of Outwitters and Star Command are pretty good reads. I hope this site catches on among the iOS community because I would love to see an increase in the flow of content. It also seems like there is a heavy focus on board, strategy and cards games which iOS GAF seems pretty fond of.

Panama Chief sends his love and some promo codes for Batman Arkham City Lockdown.

Here's 5 codes right here. US iTunes account only. ... Press quote to see 'em : all gone. Thanks, Chief !!

I rarely get addicted to iOS stuff, but Montowers is very fun. I'm at the 3rd tower right now, and I have collected a lot of cool monsters. Good game to play it in short busts, and the IAP so far is not required at all.

I know a lot of iOS GAF didn't think the TA/Republique fiasco was a big deal, but it was enough for me to swear off TA. The things you say about this new site piques my interest. I'll check it out, thanks for the heads up.

Hmm, I'll check this out... Scotland Yard iOS? Yes! I was a big fan of this game as a kid. I hope that post is accurate.

I don't see this site as any kind of TA replacement (I have no issues with TA; good resource even if the reviews aren't very helpful), but a site focused on strategy games is always welcome.

It's a nice site but it's hardly a replacement for TA. It's focussed solely on strategy games (as the name implies) so you'll miss the entirety of the rest of the iOS library.

It's perfect for AstroLad though!
