I'm seeing some weird shit going on in the app store... anyone else have a problem where a title search shows the old price but opening it up shows the new one? Happened for a few apps today. Very fucking weird.

Asking the question again:

Any deep simulation games on the app store, preferably iPad? Want a game I can dig into. The most well known simulation games like the Kairosoft one arent nearly deep enough.

Ravenmark might do the trick. Civ Revolution?

Civ Rev was neat as a on-the-go-Civ, but ehhh... felt a bit like a "dumbed down" version if you played the other Civs long enough. I might get back to that though for a while if I cant find anything else.

Ravenmark might be worth checking out though. Lots of tactical strategy?

Happened to me with "Don't run with a Plasma Sword" yesterday, the appstore on my iPhone kept saying 0.99 and gave me errors when I tried to get it... Then I went to the appstore within iTunes on my computer and there it worked and was also shown at the correct (free) price. Did you try getting the app from there?

Nah, this was just on my phone using the app. When I actually opened the page for them (it was that run/jump gothic game and also checking the price of Pocket Academy) the price was correct. Very odd.

So I knew I didn't have Oh Edo Towns or Pocket League Story yet, but I'm also missing Venture Towns. Anyone wanna weigh in on that one? It's on sale for $1.99 so I'll definitely buy it but curious to hear GAFfers thoughts.

I've played kairosoft's game dev story, mega mall story, pocket league story, grand prix story, and venture towns. Venture towns is easily the weakest of those games, feels incredibly lazy.

What about X4 games? Starbase Orion? Or more on the RPG side, King of Dragon Pass?

Also, has anyone tried Fruit Fight yet? I'm a sucker for board games and love Ascension...

200mb - I can't spare that space. Why would anyone make a 200mb endless runner?

Yeah, it is excessive, and honestly, I think the developer could have achieved a nice-looking, Castlevania-esque look without use of the Unreal Engine.

That being said, I have been following some of the developer's conversation over on Touch Arcade, and he has suggested this game is kind of a test bed for a full-on action adventure on iOS based on his work with these characters and setting.

Context: Favorite Kairosoft is Pocket Academy, followed by Grand Prix/Game Dev.

While I much prefer Venture Towns to Edo Towns (which I found lacked any noticeable progress to encourage continued play), I'm not sure it's among the company's most impressive titles. I do think it's very "playable," providing numerous guideposts in each game year that can keep you moving along, and I found in three playthroughs that I continually found new things, whether it's different modes of transportation, different buildings, or other strategies. It just doesn't do anything particularly *exciting* with all of that, and my third playthrough ultimately exhausted my interest in the game - having moved onto Pocket League, I don't expect to return any time soon.

I love Game Dev Story but don't really like Mega Mall Story. So far it's 1-1 so far for Kairosoft for me. Not sure if I should try another.

I played Game Dev Story, loved it. Bought Mega Mall Story but havne't even played it yet. Bought Grand Prix Story and loved it but still haven't finished a single playthrough.

Thanks for the impressions. I've been trying to buy it all day but still unavailable due to it being edited or whatever that message is.

I played some Pocket Academy the other day and am only in year 8. It's enjoyable but IMO less compelling than the other 4 titles I've played.

Flickpig is finally downloading...sheesh. After 24 hours

Edit: Oops, I downloaded the Lite version. Still being modified, sheesh

Loved Mega Mall Story. It's fun building up a variety of stores and the bonuses based on store locations make a lot of sense. It's a pretty solid Kairosoft-style Sim Tower clone.

Kairosoft is having a couple of base models for their games and they re-used it all the time, just changing the themes.
Grand Prix Story is made on the Game Dev Story model so you might actually like it.

Already picked up Grand Prix Story but still can't decide on Pocket Academy, based on the last thread PA had more of a mixed reaction compared to Grand Prix/Mega Mall/Game Dev story. Atm I'm thinking pass and I'll just get Mega Mall and Game Dev whenever they decide to go to .99.

Food fight as an app is really nice. The ui, sound, card art, etc. are pretty awesome. I'm not sure I love the actual game as it is pretty much just war with flavor text but it is neat nonetheless .

I would say its absolutely worth $0.99. I bought it at $3.99 personally and still felt like it was worth it.

I really enjoy Kairosoft's menu-driven games (Game Dev Story, Gran Prix Story, Pocket League Story) and find myself board almost immediately of their more Sim City-esque games where you have to drag and drop items and layout an area (Hot Springs Story, Mega Mall, Epic Astro Story).

The strangest thing about venture towns to me was the time limit to build a city (atleast until the point where your score stops) was shorter than the one in game dev story. How nonsensical is that?

Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way. Presentation and art is awesome, but the gameplay is too light to warrant a full fledged app like this. I hate how damn random it is. Wish they would of prioritized Nightfall or Summoner Wars over this one.

I bought that Assassins Creed: Recollection game for the ipad. I liked it enough to make a thread about it

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=34823172

I love games with a clean UI.

i just got my iPad a couple weeks ago and was/am on a very similar search

so far i've found these free :
Dominion
Neuroshima Hex Lite
Cabals:The Card Game
BANG! [HD] 4th of July
FMA Battle

these are 99 cents :
Assassin's Creed Recollection
Necronomicon Redux

these all seem to be well regarded but cost more than i want to pay now:
Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer
Small World
Ticket to Ride
Elder Sign: Omens HD
Carcassonne
Forbidden Island
Ghost Stories The Boardgame
RAVENMARK: Scourge of Estellion

i'd also suggest registering on AppShopper and make a Wish List to keep an eye on for price drops.
a lot of stuff you'd dig that costs now may be considerably less, if not free, at a later date.

Just a follow up on this post, Cabal and Bang are awesome, nice and clean and professional presentation. FMA is an iPhone game and doesn't look good on iPad, didn't like Dominion and Neuroshima Hex is very limited in its lite version, it basically has Quick-play and nothing else.

Yeah Bang and Cabal are keepers though.

Also i would i pay 15 bucks if Square Enix would make a Triple Triad game for iOS.

It's a blessing in disguise. Trust me.

I dig FlickPig. Feels like a runner, with a spin. Having not just to avoid hazards and pickup objects, but also balance where to put your 3 pigs...adds some mayhem that wouldn't be there otherwise and THEN it would be a boring game.

Darkness Rush does not have to be the size it is at all for what it is. Not a bad endless runner, but could have spent more time being worked on.
Edit Never mind, saw the developer is using it to test things out for a future game. In that case, good luck to him while he gets feedback from players on other sites.

Oh and Gem Keeper is currently free for anyone looking for yet another decent Tower Defence.

No problem. And yeah, I'm fairly down on Mega Mall Story: too repetitive, too mindless, and the lack of personal connection frustrated me. While Pocket Academy becomes about shepherding students through their three years of education in addition to making money/expanding your school/etc, Mega Mall Story was just constant expansion. It is a bit more "Fun" to play given the faster pace, but Pocket Academy was infinitely more rewarding for me. Even Game Dev Story, while similarly mindless on SOME level, has the sense of ownership over the games themselves, which builds up over time - that's ramped up nicely in Grand Prix and Pocket League, where the suspense of your team's success or failure is played out in real time.

I'm at the point, though, where I'll buy and play everything they put out, in order to be able to keep having these fun conversations where we compare preferences.

Just tried it again (8:20am EST)...and it's still being modified. :P

I still think the game looks cute as all hell, regardless of what some others are saying, so I'm eager to check it out.

My guess is that GlickPig is being modified the full three days it's free...
