So its cross platform? I see a Vita in there too.

PC and Vita is completely cross platform. Same worlds, same characters, etc. The smartphone versions will share the same character data and player profiles, but will run on their own network/worlds, so it's not completely cross platform. The difference is down to how the smartphone versions offer a simplified experience because of the limitations on the platforms and controls.

LOL...andddd this was clearly explained in the article. smh. Apologies.

Why aren't there any good Mario or Zelda clones for ios? There are a lot of 2D action RPGs, but none of them seem to have the puzzles/dungeons you would find in a Zelda game. There are platformers but only a few that even try to come close to Mario. Someone could make a killing with one of these.

I'm actually toying with the idea of making something Zelda inspired for my next game; tough it would probably be a much too big project for me. In the meantime how about a Megaman clone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMDfq8PLfLM, it will be out next week.

Yeah, Aquaria is a pretty good Metroidvania style game. I've only played it on PC so I can't comment on the iOS version but from comments I've read it's apparently pretty good.

Great, beautiful game on PC, shitty but still beautiful on iOS, since you move Naija with your finger all over the screen, constantly, not just tapping here and there like in point & click games where such a method would be fine, it's just not for this type of game. It's even worse than usual in this game since you can and have to move in every direction, not just left to right and vice versa which would mean you can tap with a different hand on the left and right sides of the screen with less view issues.

It'd actually be better with a virtual stick, even though I tend to hate those. I dunno if they've implemented that by now.

I'd say it's worth the extra price on PC if you don't wanna wait for some Steam deal or bundle.

awesome, must buy. it's got insane value for the asking price.

Like the poster above me said, it's fantastic.

Thanks for the impressions guys. I'm currenty playing 'Spy Mouse' and 'Bring me sandwiches with' my kids ( it's a real fight who gets to play on the new Ipad :D )
and those games are really fun too.

PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2 coming to iOS (and Android) this Winter 2012 :O
It'll be specifically tailored for touch screens and a bit simpler in controls and character creation, plus "social elements" (ugh, FB?), and with some sort of optional connectivity to the PC (F2P) version coming this summer.

I played the Dreamcast one a TON. This news needs its own thread.

You can get some good enjoyment out of it. It's annoying but not the end of the world. Being a roguelike it takes a while to hit the wall anyway. You get two base classes and i think 15 levels

I grabbed the game, but now I am wondering if I should even invest time it. It sounds like it is a glorified demo. I have no plans on investing in the forced IAP. So undecided.

I did a search for Dragons Lair 2 in the store only found the first one. Is the 2nd one an IAP of the first Dragons Lair or something?

Anyway, what's the point of having a girlfriend in New Star Soccer? The only thing she does is wrecking your car and pissing off your boss and team mates.

Any NSS fans who can shed a light on this? As is, I consider this to be flat out game breaking, and I can't really recommend the game to anyone (which is a shame since it's otherwise addictive and fun).

I think calling it game breaking is going a bit too far just because the rest of the game is so incredibly good. I do think it's a pointless addition to the game but if you take some time to keep her happy with the matching game, it's not a problem. She only does those things if you're not paying attention to her

A bigger concern is that you don't see much if any improvement in your player despite upgrading stats. This is one of those fun for an hour games and then you realize it's a bit of a mess.

Totally agreed. I feel like I'm constantly getting terrible ratings despite playing decently. I'm not sure if I'm just playing the game poorly or if the game is punishing me.

Really? Get a better relationship with your team and you'll get more opportunities in games. Have a better relationship with sponsors and they won't drop you. With your boss and you'll get better contracts. As for skills, get a better free kick skill and you'll be asked to take the free kicks. Higher vision gives you more players to pass to. Everything makes a difference, you maybe just didn't notice it because you're upgrading it bit by bit so the changes are almost invisible from match to match. From where you started your career to now, though, the changes are probably massive.

As for the girlfriend, she increases your happiness, doesn't she? Not sure what happiness affects but still, it hardly seems like it's worth complaining about something that's all but optional. If anything she's there specifically to mess you up. It's basically a life-sim, and she's just one of those things that you have to balance to get the most out of it.

The difference feels pretty minimal. I have +40 power cleats which puts me at 91 and it's not like keepers don't handle shots that are directly at them. I still occasionally tap the ball slightly off center and send it in a direction I don't want to.. no skill seems to make any difference on your receiving the ball in that capacity.

My pace is 70 due to my boots and I don't actually run any faster when trying to intercept a ball. I also don't have more stamina or anything which this should improve.

Even with 59 technique, I don't bend the ball around a wall *that* well.

Don't get me wrong, the game has its moments, but the difference between game 1 and game 50 of my player does not feel nearly as large as it should.

Pretty much this. She's there to screw you. It's just a part of the challenge.

I don't see how anyone could call that gamebreaking.

One of the things with adding spin is that the initial direction is way off to the side, way more than you would think. Once you figure that out, spinning is awesome to screw around with. My longest goal is like 53 due to spin.

Someone had already recommended that and kingdom rush. In fact thosebtwo are all I get recommended over and over. Not big on virtual buttons, but I'll take it for a spin.

Waking Mars, Anomaly Warzome Earth, Ravenmark, Squids, Mage Gauntlet (not IPad exclusive but great) and Helsings Fire (not exclusive also but awesome). Some more of my favorites off the top of my head.

I do not understand the hype on Ziggurat. The controls suck making the game shit.
They need to add a sensitivity setting.

I think the controls are perfect. Well, except for the optional slingshot mode, which I think is only there to make fun of Angry Birds players

How are the controls crappy? You slide on the bottom of the screen, hold to power up and release at the right moment.

I cannot slide all the way. Sliding the finger across the screen does not move the gun at full range. On both iPhone and iPad

What league are you playing in? I was having the same issues at first but then I switched to the United States and the game is not nearly as punishing and helps you build up your character quickly. I was previously playing in England and I think that's the hardest league in the game

Maybe that's your answer then.

If SpaceChem counts, that too (it's on PC, but not iPhone), but you can maybe try and sound a little more friendly when you're asking people for help.

Got Kingdom Rush, nice but nothing mindblowing.

Just bought incoboto already regretting it massively. Trials should be mandatory, like on XBLA... I can't stand virtual buttons and this game embodies all of the reasons why. It feels way too awkward to control.

The thing is, "is that it?"... I mean, I bought machinarium because I already knew it was awesome from pc but I've got to wonder why people keep telling me to get those 2 when there's awesome stuff like Machinarium to be found... no offense on incoboto, it looks awesome and is a legitimate recommendation. But I want to know about all the "superbrothers" for the iPad... not enjoyable but run-of-the-mill stuff like kingdom rush!

I'm gonna check out SpaceChem.

Thx.

I know this thread is massive and it moves fast, but this question is literally asked at least once a week.

Unfortunately the "best of ios" thread's vote based nature is going to reflect the fact that there are alot more iphone owners (and therefore voters) than there are ipad ones, so any great game who's not on iphone as well as ipad is going to get shunned for lack of votes... what else is there to do except ask?

None of the games you mentioned are iPad exclusive, actually.

Thing is, there aren't that many iPad exclusive games.

But yeah, you mentioned good options. Waking Mars and Ravenmark are amongst my iOS favorites. Two incredibly under appreciated games, sadly.

Yeah I came to that realization haha. Whatever games are iPad exclusive usually don't stay that way for long.

Yep, started going through them in the store and realized I was familiar with all of them except Waking Mars (which looks awesome, btw).

I liked Ravenmark but stopped playing it as it was a somewhat moot point considering I still had Tactics ogre and FFT to playthrough on the psp...

People don't support them. As for the Mario clones, the touch support screen just doesn't work for twitch based gaming that requires any kind of precision.

The Zelda thing is a little more complicated. There was an EXCELLENT Zelda-style/Metroidvania type game called Elemental Rage from Onric games that came out about a year or so ago. It was for both iPhone and IPad. The game was gorgeous 2D, was very heavy on exploration, albiet too short. I remember trying to get people excited about the game, but there weren't any biters, either on GAF or Touch Arcade. The game played marvelously, and is a LOT better than Swordigo. I recently contacted the devs to find out about an update or sequel, and sadly the guys aren't developing games anymore because the game was such a financial bomb for them.

The Apple Store marketplace is FULL of quick-fix games that crowd out the richer experiences that aren't hyped with the benefit of solid marketing budgets. I try to come to Gaf regularly to spotlight hidden gems, or more traditional games that might've been overlooked. There are several guys on GAF that do this, actually.

Of the Metroidvania games I've enjoyed on the device, try:

Terava
Elemental Rage
Grokion (iPhone)

You had me salivating over Elemental Rage... but it's virtual button-controlled... so that's a no.

Am I the only one who hates this?

The art in two of the three Metroidvania games sucks. It sucks so bad that I don't want to play them.

Yeah I came to that realization haha. Whatever games are iPad exclusive usually don't stay that way for long.
In the case of Anomaly it came out on PC first. It's also dumbed-down somewhat on iOS/Android, at least at the beginning (didn't play far enough to see if things change), as the PC version has you controlling a specific unit who has to go get the powerups, rather than just tapping on them, which means you wind up leaving behind powerups.

That makes sense, I've been playing in England as well. NSS was giving me horrible flashbacks to Baseball Superstars where my character would randomly fall ill so that I'd have to basically pay to get their in-app currency to buy a healing item. I don't think it's anywhere near as bad, but it wasn't exactly clear that the English league would be more difficult.

Well, it's not the best solution, but like I said, the question is asked at least weekly ("I just bought an iPad, what are the 'must-have' games to buy?"). You'd have to do some digging (or google search gaf).

Well, I'm lazy and all too familiar with the iPhone's library, so... I asked. :D

In EDGE ( I think january 2012 ) there is a list of 50 must-play iOS games. I can post the list if anyone is interested.

This makes 2.
