The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

Cool, now I can buy the Virtua Tennis on Vita now that I know the iOS version isn't a real fleshed-out game.

Don't get me wrong, the base game plays really well, has a lot of fluidity and looks good too (apart from some framerate stutters), so if you're looking for a Tennis game on iOS, it will definitely provide you with some fun games. Its career mode is EXTREMELY basic though, with just 3 tournaments to pick from each day that give you standing points if you win them, and the more points you have the better. That's it. No progression, no ingame-equipment store, nada. Online-mutiplayer is a lagfest (e.g. Timing your service is impossible), and the only minigame there is is a balloonshoot scoreattack.

Rather disappointing :/

Haul for this morning:

Paid

My Little Hero
New Orbit (been wanting to check this one out for a while)
Samurai II Spirits

Free

Zombie Ace (ridiculously addictive)
Subway Surf
Brutal Street
RPG Puzzle (code from a TA user)

Wish I had more room on my phone -- there are at least a dozen other games I'd like to get while they're on sale.

As an aside, I tried out the lite version of Swords & Poker 2 -- absolutely awesome, little game -- but I'm wondering how many dungeons you get with the full version. Seems pricey for that type of game.

I already have superbrothers EP micro and I'm tempted to get the iPad version, is it worth it?

Absolutely. It was first game I picked up for my iPad 3 and the first game I played through. The graphics are great on the large screen and playing it through a second time was just as enjoyable. I did get the feeling that S&S:EP was designed as a pocket experience first and foremost. Did the developers ever come out and say that?

Mini motor racing HD is very enjoyable.nbarely scratched the surface and the AI is really dumb and slow, but it gives me major skidmarks vibes, with a bit of motorstorm RC and even Mille migle with the nonsense arcade steering (using tank mode). The car looks gorgeous on a retina iPad too. For free you should definitely check it out.

On an entirely unrelated note, I wish I'd stop hitting 'n' instead of the space bar on the iPad keyboard :/

Hmmm. You prefer it to Reckless Racing 2?

Well, RR2 definitely requires more skill, in my opinion, and it feels deeper overall. Don't think I'd say I prefer it, but for a quick, pick-up-and-play arcade game, it's definitely easier to jump into because of the way it plays. You don't really need to trick out your vehicle in order to control your car well -- it handles well right out of the gate. And of course, the track design is a lot tighter and curvier than RR2, so the type of handling makes good sense here.

Yea, the price scared me away from buying it too. I loved the game, though.

A few other gems that may have slipped people by during this sale:

Forget-Me-Not (Cult Rouge-like): http://appshopper.com/games/forget-me-not-2
Vincere Totus Astrum (Casual 4X Strategy game): http://appshopper.com/games/vincere-totus-astrum
Eufloria HD (Weird casual RTS ported from the PC): http://appshopper.com/games/eufloria-hd
Zombie Minesweeper (Really nice looking action puzzle game): http://appshopper.com/games/zombie-minesweeper
Osmos (Indie darling action game): http://appshopper.com/games/osmos-for-ipad

I already had Zombie Minesweeper and Osmos before the sale, and both are quite good. Zombie Minesweeper has you playing a little girl trying to escape from zombies on a minefield in real time. A port of the PC game, Osmos has you playing an organism trying to absorb other organisms, but the twist is that with every movement you expel mass.

Slingshot is really nice - think hot champ but with cars. Simple one button game but chaining your slings together to get the best lap time will take a lot of practice. Multiplayer is local only I think, but you each get a corner of the screen, so four player on the iPad should be a lot of fun.

I need to mention that it did make my iPad 3 *really* hot in the bottom left corner. Much hotter than I've ever noticed before. Don't know what it's doing as I've played games that seem to be more graphically intensive than this

Please let us know how Autumn Dinasty is, I'm curious. I'll be the guinea pig for Virtua Tennis. I love on the west coast though, not out yet. (When does it come out on the Canadian store, midnight? Not sure?)

EDIT: Rebuild is on sale for .99 from 2.99, it's got some praise before, what's GAF's verdict?

What's the word on Autumn Dynasty?

I have played through the first three missions of Autumn Dynasty so far and I am pretty impressed. Graphics look really good and are silky smooth on my iPad 2. Overall the gameplay is really fun. It has light building and resource management (you can only build in select locations). So far the missions seem to be pretty varied. I have seen misisions to protect a location for a time period, destroy enemy base while managing your resources, find this captured unit, etc. Units all have access to special abilities like ambush (slow enemies down as they near you), deploy for archers (increases range but your units have no mobility), fire (sets ground and forests on fire), charge for cavalry and avalanche (if you are near a mountain you can trigger an avalanche causing damage over time). The only issue I have with it is that I can't make damn groups which means that I have to tap around to individual units during battles to activate special abilities, kind of annoying but not a deal breaker or anything. I recommend Autumn Dynasty if you are a fan of RTS, I have not tried multiplayer yet though. I'll do that tonight.

In reviews they said they iPad version, but I'm very tempted to get it today

YES! Hopefully that's an issue that can be patched out.

Excepting that, I've really enjoyed what I've played of it so far. It's a very well thought out and executed game. RTS games can work so well on the iPad.

So, who's going to be the guinea pig for Air Mail? It looks interesting and I quite enjoyed Pilotwings on the 3DS, I just need a couple of impressions first...

Nice. Can't wait to get home and play!

Nice. Can't wait to get home and play!

For what it's worth, Slide to Play just put up a very positive yet vague review for Air Mail.

This quote has me a little worried:
"You can use a virtual joystick, tilt the entire device, or employ a complicated 'advanced' mode that lets you pull off extra moves like barrel rolls."

The review never explains why the advanced mode is so complicated.

Yeah, I've read that. Not a terribly informative review, as usual with iOS gaming sites.

In Gaf we trust. I'll wait to see the feedback here.

So Defender Chronicles II...yay or nay?

The graphics look uninspired. The gameplay looks a bit dull...is it really worth it? Where does the depth come in that makes it more than just a different view on a traditional TD game?

It depends. If you're done with, say, Kingdom Rush, and you have a deep need for a new TD game, I'd say give it a go, but otherwise... No.

I'd wait for a sale. I bought it full price because I loved the first one, but I shouldn't have.

The depth comes from equipment, spells, upgrades, etc. It goes much further than any other TD I've come across, but the UI is so ridiculously bad that it detracts from the game.

I was tempted to get FIFA 12 while its on sale, but then I read the latest reviews and see they've added adverts to it in the latest update.

Ads in a paid for game, especially one that most of the time costs 6 quid? No thanks.

This really grinds my gears.

If I pay for something I don't want ads. Angry Birds Space pulls this shit. It advertises a load of stuff related to Angry Birds in the pause menu.

Zombie Ace is cool, but I'm having a hard time deciding whether I want to continue progress on iPad or iPhone. This is why I cry for more easy-to-use iCloud features. Get done playing on one device, can continue progress right from where you left off on the other.

And while they're at it, figure out some way to keep notification spam from happening if you have both devices near each other.

Canabalt iOS update might add local multiplayer, hardcore modes

Outside of workshopping "challenge maps" for Canabalt, creator Adam Saltsman has been pretty mum on any kind of updates or changes for the free-runner ... until now. Rather than do a sequel, Saltsman is considering a free update that would add local multiplayer for up to two people, eight new hardcore game modes with corresponding leaderboards, and achievements for Game Center.

Saltsman also kinda joked about Canabalt without rooftops, as seen in the image above – sounds great to us because maybe then we'd stop jumping into walls. This was more of a hypothetical than anything, though Saltsman hasn't officially ruled it out. Maybe it'll be the most hardcore mode of them all: You spawn and then immediately fall to your death.

What's the best way to make sure the codes get to Neogaffer's rather than lurkers?

You put them under the email tag, which only shows up to registered users when they quote the post.

It's worth it for .99, just wait for another sale, it goes down quite often. It's pretty well made for a port. Not as good as First Touch Soccer (WHERE IS THE NEXT FULL ONE. Dream league and score! Are good, but I want the real deal), but definitely worth the .99 :p

Burnout Crash orright for a buck?

Edit: Somehow, on the AU store it's $2. I hate quibbling about a dollar here or there, but given it's a game I'm barely interested in, that's the tipping point.

Burnout crash kinda sucks. I would say save your money. I got my purchase refunded.

So I bought:
Waking Mars
Cannabalt
Edge
Edge Extended
Gunman Clive
Aaaa....
League of Evil 2
World of Goo (double dip)
EDIT: Considering double dipping on Osmos, I already have in on Steam, do you think it gains a lot from the touchscreen on the iPad?
