https://store.nisaeurope.com/blogs/news/nisa-europe-interviews-toshihiro-kondo-part-1-2

NISA did an interview with Kondo, that touches on the Trails series quite a bit, as well as Ys.

So I wanted to talk about jumping in the game, as Ys VII was the first Ys game to include jumping, there was also another huge Japanese Action ARP that introduced jumping into it’s series for the first time The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, what do you think will be the next big thing to introduced into Japanese games design?
prinny what the fuck

I don't think any other than Xseed will work on a behemot of a project like the kiseki games are. The series is still too niche in the west.

I got the fuzzies reading about how much Estelle meant to Kondo.

Also call me super irrational, but seeing Nisa anywhere near Trails talk makes me nervous. If they pick up CS3 (omega unlikely) I'm pretty sure i'll awaken to my own Stigma.

I am the same, and I'm gonna be like that until I get confirmation of the game coming over, I'm really worried :(

It's just an interview. They probably have interest in publishing it, but not in shouldering the risk for localization.

I mean Ys VIII is a rush job.

Fortunately(?), Trails games aren't as great of an investment short term as Ys. The scripts are huge, the fanbase is smaller outside of Japan, and for Cold Steel 3 in particular there's a two game barrier of entry (And that's not including the giant question mark that is the crossbell duology). If Nisa has the manpower for even a rushed Trails localisation, they would certainly be better off using it elsewhere.

(Also, a major factor in Ys VIII's case is that they promised a PC port that Xseed couldn't provide, from what I remember. Post-Ys VIII Xseed is a different situation, what with the high quality Cold Steel pc port and the upcoming port of the sequel.)

Yeah, I'm not that worried. Too many things work against them in the case of Trails, and CS especially. We'll probably have this concern again at the start of Calvard, but most of the challenges will still he present. It'll still be a LOT of text for a return that wouldn't be worth it to really anyone but XSEED.

I'm more curious if the inevitable PC port of CS3 will launch simultaneously with the PS4 release in the west, or months later. An added turbo mode and more voice acting than what's in the console game would be great. And the safe assumption is the game is 30fps on PS4, so there's the performance boost to consider as well.

Yes, I've been wondering about this too. I don't think a day one port is realistic at this moment, unless they choose to delay the ps4 version instead of releasing it sooner. I'm not usually the type to get two versions of the same game, and in cases like this I would choose to wait for the pc port. The big question is how long the wait could be.

Finished Ao Chapter 2.
Gilliath is so full of shit, I hate that guy. Both Osborne and Rocksmith are shady trying to prove that Crossbell can't deal with crisis just so they can each step in. The situation is volatile, I can't wait to see where it's going.
I loved seeing the Imperial Liberation Front crash the Zemurian Trade Conference, and seering Dieter Crois declare Crossbell independence instead of just reading about it in the Imperial Chronicle.

Now it's time to relax under the sun at Michelam beach it seems. Can't wait to see what's next

If it's staggered I'd buy both without even thinking about it, honestly.

Like, I'm actually hoping it's staggered so they can add the extra stuff to it. I feel like they won't do anything to it if it's simultaneous so as to avoid comparison drama.

A PC port would be outsourced anyway, as long as they have someone to partner with. I think it was Hyde who ported Ys VII, so they might be able to keep working with them in the future.

NISA and Aksys are managing them on the same day, so I don't see why Xseed couldn't. I know Aksys has Ghostlight doing Tokyo Xanadu, not sure if it's been mentioned who's porting Ys VIII.

I might buy both either way. Depends on my enjoyment of the game overall if I want to play through it twice. If it's good enough I'll have import saves for pc and Ps3 ready. If I get enough good scenes from that then I'll definitely play both.

Though i wish smaller pubs were able to do physical pc releases

As much as I will love to see a PC version with more voice acting that would delay the western release considerably and I would not be okay with that. I'm trying to be positive and assuming we'll have CS3 next year but I think we all know its a huge long shot as it is.

We don't even have an announcement. Check it out it's gonna be like the Crossbell game

I mean, would it? If they add anything to it I think it would launch later. I don't think they'd release a PC port that has more content on the same day as the PS4 version.

Ideally CS3 wouldn't need any extras like voice acting because that stuff won't get skimped on in the first place. More advanced graphics features/options are typical and shouldn't make any difference.

You never know. I don't think Falcom skimps on anything, the games are just developed conservatively, on a budget. They're very long and verbose at the cost of low-detail assets and minimal voice work relative to the amount of text. XSEED is just willing to pay to add more themselves and more power to them for that.

Don't look at the character list on the site for Sen 3 anymore. Spoilers up in there. I got hit by a big one... which I'm not sure if they'll shove that in peoples face early or not.

Waaaarning. Possible spoiler here for Sen 3?

Yeah, masked dude is totally Crow. Kinda sad that I saw that in the character list on the official website.

Went through the first moon door in 3rd.

I never thought I'd see Tita with this newfound maturity, especialy wrt Renne when their relationship wasn't developed that much in SC. Seeing her (and probably Agate) naturally acting like sister and brother is cute, too.

Another thing that surprised me was the length of that entire story; I wanna to play a little further but I stoped right then for tonight.

Playing on Hard is making me cautious about every fight and every attack I receive or miss. So far, physical attacks seem useless which made me change my orbment scheme. Thank Aidios for the warp mechanic letting me go back to the hub whenever I need to heal/buy stuff.

So 3rd itself...

(spoilers through chapter 3)
I don't HATE that the whole game is clearly in Phantasma but it certainly is disappointing. I wanted to see the NPC stories of various characters develop and continue on but outside of short cameos scenes focusing on our main cast they are not present. I was happy when I got to Grancel and thought 'oh okay, only part of the game is like this' but nope whole game just empty areas except for months.

The little side stories are okay but get tedious when they linger on characters like Josette (who I do not have any interest in and am still baffled why such a minor and unimportant character is even playable) I liked seeing Kloe finally confess to Joshua and Tita's mini story but overall they are hit or miss so far which is a shame because outside of those the game is only short bits of story progression at the start and end of each chapter and some of the chapters are quite short. Chapter 3 was literally 4 maps and 2 boss fights long. It at least gave me a reason to finally use all the characters I had until that point but even still it was really short.

I'm hoping the game eventually opens up at least a little bit or hopefully there is a lot more story elements that come into play because right now this doesn't feel like a real sequel it feels more like an expansion pack then anything else.

Also considering I bindged through both FC/SC I'm having a lot harder time playing this game consistently because it just gets boring after awhile with very little to break up the general progression of Chapter starts>Kevin Backstory>See new area>Spend 90% of your time finding treasures and fighting battles>Unlock characters and/or fight a boss> Chapter ends with minor plot development. It just gets tedious after awhile which is disappointing because despite me saying that FC was lacking it still had a nice break up of side quests, main quests, side stories, and character development throughout and this game just doesn't break it up enough for me. The side stories go on to long at times and I've only really liked 2 of them so far.

Again not hating the game but its a much bigger step down then I was expecting.

^I echo pretty similarly on my feelings on 3rd. The doors are incredibly awkwardly paced and the story is pretty forced. However around chapter 4 it gets a lot more interesting and by the end Ries and Kevin's story and relationship is one of the best things in the series.

I still find it the worst game in the series to play, but it ends up being excellent in its own right.

3rd is basically a dungeon crawler that slowly builds up Kevin's story, and the doors offer some more development or closure for the cast from FC/SC and tease some (including ones that haven't even been made yet). It's undeniably something fundamentally different, going in with the expectation that it will be similar in structure to the rest of the series probably leaves a fair amount of people disappointed.

And I thought the star doors were fine for the most part. Most of the moon doors dragged and none of the sun door minigames were really compelling or fun enough to make me want to revisit them.

I found 3rd's progression to be a nice break from the whole series. I wasn't sure I was going to love the dungeon crawler but I ended up liking it a lot. 3rd's probably was the most fun gameplay wise and I feel is the easiest to replay of the series for me.
Also, I think npcs do get development and it's show through the game. And the cast interactions were great from my point of view. I wasn't that fond of FC and SC characters but I did saw enough from them in this game to change my opinion quite a bit.

Of course, if you go into 3rd expecting it to be like the rest of the games you are setting yourself up for disappointment. It's very different and that was made it so special for me.

As for the doors; I didn't have problems with them. If anything, maybe one or two last a bit longer of what I was expecting but that's it. I left them from moments were I was starting to feel exhausted from dungeon crawling. That way the pace of the game wasn't hurt for me.
Now, I took one whole month with the game and I think this is not the type of game to be played non-stop. It would probably hurt the pacing quite a bit for me as 3rd's basic structure becomes really noticeable.

I loved the Doors. Personally I'll take those over sidequests for Towa, school house, sidequests on field study, to finally the peak of the story part of the chapter. Not just CS1, but I guess sidequests in general for the series. A big part is because I could put off the doors if I really wanted to. Sidequests I couldn't, so I had to do those right away regardless of how absorbed I was into the current story if I wanted to do everything.

It felt like it trimmed a lot of the fat for Trails game for me. Also worked out on how fast the game threw better quartz and characters to you, imo. Plus some of the doors (especially later on) allowed them to write interesting little snippets without figuring out how to shoehorn them into the main plot.

The 3rd's probably my third favorite of Trails though. I didn't find it too out of place compared to the rest of the series, but I can see it has enough to throw people off and not enjoy it as much.

the entire door system is one giant shoehorn though

3rd is basically a fandisc and the entire premise is just an excuse to show random vignettes from across the timeline. It works, but one shouldn't go in expecting a more standard sequel.

The doors are a contrivance, but would you have preferred those scenes/minigames just being options from a menu?

Count me in for loving 3rd's system and loving 3rd's story and doors.

Just treat the doors as the epilogues and snippets of the past that they are and you will enjoy the game, especially if you liked the Sky characters. And Kevin's story is great.

If you go in with extremely rigid expectations, you will be disappointed, guaranteed.

Not into the main story though where they have to find an excuse for the cast to witness and acknowledge these. Sort of like the books in these games.

Exactly. The difference is that in many of the doors there's interactivity so it feels like the player is playing out the events of the "book", which is great.

Having a Trails game where Kevin has to hop across time and space to acknowledge all parties involved and slowly build up how and why he got there is not a feasible idea.

3rd is great in essence because it's the Trails game that breaks all the rules. It bucks the format and it's more memorable for it. It gives the player the freedom to engage the combat as much as they want and treat the story similarly in that doors don't need to be viewed as soon as they're discovered or even viewed at all.

Kevin and Ries are the best leads in the series.

It sounds like you're burnt out on the Sky games, because 3rd almost objectively has better pacing than FC/SC. 3rd breaks up the main story in literally the same way as FC/SC but better; you have substantial side stories, sidequests (the door requirements) and minigames to break up the game's flow. Not being able to consistently talk to every NPCs is a bummer but after literally 100+ hours of doing that, i'm glad they held back on that front.

3rd is basically a fandisc and the entire premise is just an excuse to show random vignettes from across the timeline. It works, but one shouldn't go in expecting a more standard sequel.

Calling 3rd a "fan disk" is massively shortselling it. The game serves as an epilogue to the Liberl arc and sets up like... every other game in the franchise. I would argue that more effort was put into making this game than SC.

Speaking of doors...

Sky 3rd Chapter 4 spoilers
Did Kloe's door, going normal and all of a sudden a wild fucking LECHTER appears? Did a double take at that one, didn't expect him to show up here all freaking places.

I mean that's a really common thing for fan discs to do. Epilogues and a bunch of short stories fleshing out characters are what they are known for. Sometimes they are even better than the main game. It's a fitting description for what 3rd is, it's about structure and type of content not quality.

Oh, I thought you were writing it off as a fanservice game that somehow ended up being good.

My bad, though in my defense I've played like 1 fan disk (P3: The Answer), and, well.

The descriptor might be fitting narratively, but it doesn't account for the gameplay which is way too good to just not acknowledge.

3rd is a very good video game with fan-disc elements, I'd say.

I knew that Julia was humble and dutiful to an extent, but not this much! Always thinking of serving her country and her queen and princess...

I was laughing when I saw that huge group of fans wanting to meet her :D I wonder if that's something that happens in real life, with fans of this game?

So this is how this game is going to be, huh: Every side-story richly developing already well-written characters while something weird is going on in the main plot; I can agree with the "fan disc" denomination.

Was 3rd marketed pre-release as it is? Like, were people going in knowing that it was not a game like FC and SC? I feel like reading on anything regarding its development now.

3rd probably has one of the most refined gameplay of the games released in the west, fandisc content or no; buffs are still on the internal timer compared to the more sensible CS system but it's got a decent artes/craft balance and due to boss HP and mechanics alpha striking isn't as prevalent as later games. I'm hoping CSIII changes up delay and quartz like domination so people don't end up one-shotting bosses or stopping them from ever moving.

It wasn't - it was a MGS2-style switchup. It wasn't received too well at JP release for this reason, I've heard, although people have long since come around on it.

3rd Chapter 4 spoilers
Unlocked Anelace whose intro was hilarious. Of course she would've been sleeping and dreaming of cute things. Although once again, I'm finding these nods to certain characters I already know about, her being the Granddaughter of Yun Ka Fai was interesting. He's actually yet to reveal himself in any of the games has he?
