The Last of Us: Pedro Pascal Says He Was "Worried" About Imitating the Game Too Much

While HBO's The Last of Us adaptation is still in the works, relatively little is known about it beyond the cast. At this point, there is still only one official photo showing Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) and Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) from behind. That said, Pascal himself hasn't been completely quiet about the upcoming adaptation, and in a new interview, he specifically noted that he watched his nephew play through a solid chunk of The Last of Us -- and it actually made him a bit worried about his own performance.

"I found Joel [in the game] so impressive – I found the whole of it such a visually impressive experience," Pascal told GQ in a wide-ranging interview ostensibly about the new movie The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. "And then I got worried that I would want to imitate too much, which I think could be right in some circumstances, and then a mistake in others. So I just wanted to create a healthy distance, and for that to be more in the hands of [show co-writer] Craig Mazin and [game writer and show co-writer] Neil Druckmann."

This kind of stuff irritates me. It’s like there is this weird “template” they have to follow to adapt these things to movies or TV.

I feel like these creatives making these narrative driven games and cinematic games aren’t out to make games in the first place and come off more like playable movies at times.

Then they want to distance themselves and changes things so they are even less similar. I get creative liberties, but showing is better than telling when they respect the source material.

I'd be worried about the show following the games too much, too if I was ol' Pedro.

I'M THE LEAD ON TWO HIT SHOWS!

*Season 2 filming begins*

*Rhonda Rousey comes on set wearing a name tag that says "Abby,"*

*Druckman forms from scattered sand on the ground wearing a refugee flag like a cape and holding an extra soy latte in one hand*

"SO HERE'S THE THING PEDRO. WE'RE ONLY GONNA NEED YOU TO FILM FOR THREE DAYS,"

*caddy arrives*

Hollywood ruins everything. Also it is an adaptation... so no matter what, it will never be like the game. It would be easier to just release the cut-scenes.

I think we gamers are luckier, we get the most complete medium - games. We experienced the first game in a way that someone who would just watch it, would not feel the same emotional pull as us.

WTF is this? I don’t even know who the guy is but all of a sudden we’re full-on private Twitter drama here. Bloody hell.

He pulled an Adam Sessler (probably same amount of cocaine) styled blanket rant about people who vote a certain way being legitimate silly mustache Anne Frank Haters Club chairmen fucking swastika campaign for the Holy Ark Nazis, and understandably some people think that's a stupid take to have.

I'm wholly indifferent to the guy, but he's on a silly soapbox spitting bubbles into the aether.

Man, I don't understand a fucking word. Help me here.

Yeah because why would you want to imitate the character you play from the game your entire show is based on? That just makes no sense whatsoever. Give it your own spin, preferably as different from the videogame as possible. That's definitely what fans want to see!

Also very comforting to read that his exposure to the source material is limited to "watching his nephew play through a chunk of the game".

... Why adapt it then, ffs? I really, really hate IP being slapped onto something, where none of the characters match their established points. Maybe they're race/sexuality-changed from whom the character is supposed to be, or their story/motivations are different.

Who's it for? You're almost guarenteed to piss off original source material fans etc.

Wait...you think this is for the people that already know the game? As far as i know it's exactly the opposite...it's to present the IP to an entire new audience.

The Witcher 3 went back to the top of the charts when the TV show aired for that reason.

Well... I mean I already think TLOU 2 shit on all the main characters from 1, and TLOU Remake will rewrite them to further align with TLOU2. Like it'll be the white doctor in an immaculate hospital room this time around, and not a firefly model from Factions MP in a grimey operating room. Sort of affects the narrative setup/context juuust a little bit. Druckman wanted "his" TLOU1 story, he got it in TLOU2, and will now rewrite TLOU1 to further silence the "haters".

But... I just meant any form of adaptive media, usually TV shows or film. If I see the name Resident Evil, for example, I want my Wesker to be a blonde white guy. That's who he is, and for lore reasons. He's not a black guy, and the random change to be so is insulting. Its insulting for orginal fans, and probably rings-hollow for black people too as I hope its seen as empty lip service. If I see the name Wesker, im interested in Albert and Alex, not two made-up children in fucking high-school, or whatever that shit was.

It's not about "inclusion", although its annoying because it's hollow, its moreso that it is usually this way in which source material changes are thrust upon viewers. if you wanna do that, make a new character and less people are pissed-off because you havent changed something pre-established for no good reason.

I dont give a shit about what Pedro did or did not do. He acts quite well and if he plays well in TLoU show then thats even better.

Agreed...f@#k Pedro Pascal and his intersectional degenerate politics. It would be justified karma if someone ruined his career...recompense for his participation and cowardly backstabbing of Gina Carano.

How did he backstab Carano? I thought he didnt get involved much

A+ acting from this guy.
He’s like listening to a constipated aardvark read lines off toilet paper in a State park public toilet.
Have some standards for freak sake!
