The Last of Us: Remastered |OT| Game of the Years

you can learn their paths, stealth kill them one by one, leave the clicker for last

I actually took out the clicker 2nd or 3rd as he just sits there. You can lure it away pretty easy with a bottle and then come up behind it to make it easier to kill. Then take down the others stealthily and if you get spotted, you don't have to worry about a potential insta-kill.

Sweet thanks man

Just watch for spoilers man if you haven't beaten it yet and good luck!

Quick question, a wonderful GAFer gifted me this game since I have not played it yet. Is beginning toddler friendly? Im going to start tonight, but want to know if its ok for my 4 year old see watch the start or not. I know it gets quite graphic later, but I have no idea about the beginning. Thanks.

I'd say no. I would say why but could be spoilery, get some other opinions first.

Well, so far this has been everything I could of asked for in the remaster. It's jaw dropping how much better the game looks than on the PS3. Anyone who says 1080P and 60 FPS does not matter is blind. It's almost like a brand new game to me. Kudos to ND for putting this together for us to experience again on the PS4.

From minute one, its pretty graphic, so I would not suggest it.

Once again Neogaf lied to me. Playing on 60fps and the shadows look fine. I don't know why I get caught up in the nitpicking of this place. I can't wait to get home and play!

Don't have your kid near you for the opening, really.

Well, to be fair I would say the vast majority of us knew it was nothing to fuss over. Don't lump all of GAF together for the vocal minority. :)

Yeah, definitely not. The game gets off to a harsh start pretty quick.

I like lumping everyone together because it adds to the rest of the hyperbole I see all over this place. I thought that was how we were supposed to do it.

The opening can be quite intense and violent at times so I would not recommend having your kid watch if content is a concern.

Thanks for the help everyone. It is comforting to know it is one of the harder parts of the game. Ill keep trying! :)

There are way harder parts in the game, but it's almost inaccurate to call certain parts harder than others, because this game is all about the approach. A section that is easy as hell for one person will be a nightmare for someone else because they didn't take the same approach. Playing on Survivor when I played on PS3, I learned an awful lot about taking my time, noticing enemy patterns, and making "every shot count".

HOLY SHIT!

This game! THIS GAME!

It's more than a game, it's an experience. I had never felt so moved within the first 20 minutes of any game and it's held up, so far. Everything is top notch and has excellent standards (animation, gameplay, sound design, voice acting, cutscenes, art direction)....

I nearly jumped on finally buying a PS3 last year, solely for The Last of Us and passed on it for PS4 (new gen was more important). I regret not taking the opportunity (having been a 360 gamer all last gen) to give Sony credit for green lighting experiences like this. I'm happy to finally play this, in its best incarnation - on PS4 - even if I'm late to the party.

I implore more people who haven't played this - PLAY IT. EXPERIENCE IT.

I managed to avoid all spoilers and come in fresh. Naughty Dog, Naughty Gods indeed. This is a culmination of a studio firing on all cylinders, in their prime.

Can't wait to see this game through to its close.

The spoilered part is the exact part I am at. I am having a ton of trouble with the combat and having no fun at all and I am playing on easy!. Please give me a reason to go on because the game just isn't clicking (pun intended.) for me.

That was also a big roadblock for me (hard, no listening mode). First enemies are easy. For the rest of them you have to remember their paths and engage them so that you don't attrackt the others. It's a special area to teach you the mechanics/enemies, the hard way.
It doesn't stay that hard. Play further and you will see. Died at least 15 times at that part (PS3).

I am right there now. In fact I quit right before that part because it gave me hell on ps3 when I played normal with listen mode on.

Now I am playing hard with listen mode off and I was afraid to dive into that area last night when I was getting tired. I must have died there 10+ times on normal. I am going to try to be more strategic now, draw infected to remote areas and take them out. I am very afraid though!

HOLD ME!!

First timer here. I'm about 1.5 hours in and I've been really enjoying the game so far. However, there are a few graphical things that have came up. The game stuttered terribly during the first cut scene before the opening credits roll. Like slideshow bad.

Also, if you look closely at the environment you can begin to see that this is using some last-gen hardware. This game looks much better in open, wide environments. Taken wholistically The Last of Us is beautiful, but avert your eyes from looking to closely.

Yeah, the whole game is not for kids. From the language to the violence. I got it yesterday and gave myself an hour before I picked my kid of from daycare...lol. Then once he went to bed it was on! :) Have fun and don't rush it.

Exactly what part were you at. Mine has been averaging close to 60 fps the whole 5 hours in. And the textures/shadows and visual quality are at least 10x better than that of what I played of the PS3 version. Are you sure your PS4 wasn't acting up? Maybe getting hot. I have to open the cabinet door when I play the console for any game.

For that are playing with Listening Mode set to "off," what is the reasoning? The extra challenge? I didn't see a trophy explicitly tied to that setting.

My GF was going to sit and watch me play through the game for the first time, but she doesn't do too well with gore...

*rethinks first TLOU playthrough plans*

It's not really gory in the classic sense. It's brutal and bleak and emotionally devastating. Talking about the first 10 minutes of the game here.

The only real noticeable drop I've seen was near the beginning of the game: the
flooded streets when Tess first joins your party
. Other than that, 60.

Using the game's exceptional sound design and your own senses to navigate the environment is more fun than just pressing the wallhack button.

It's turned off in the harder difficulties by default. Turning it off will prepare you for that, and it will make the game more tense and challenging.

This pretty much sums up my first experience. I'm actually jealous of you first timers who get to experience it for the first time on the PS4, it really is an amazing ride. Glad you are enjoying it! :)

Funny because last night i specifically looked at the shadows in certain scenes at 60fps and the shadows looked quite good. Not nearly as jaggy as they looked in some of the pics posted. I guess people picked out the absolute worst shots they could find.

In these days of console wars, people will always pick out the absolute worst shots they can find just to start shit.

Do you mean after (Outskirts/Downtown spoiler)
climbing around the outside of the building on window washing platforms
?

If so there are four runners and a clicker in this set piece.
You can take out the first standing runner (looks like some kind of guard) really easily. He is standing back to you at the end of the corridor and to the left from the metal pipe you find immediately after dropping into the corridor so just stealth kill this one.

After ending this enemy, back up to where you found the pipe, and look down the corridor the other way. A runner will come down it towards you but then cut right into a small (to your left) and circle through this and come out of a door just ahead of you and to the left. Wait for him to do circuit one (don't worry they just repeat the same patterns until disturbed) and then duck into the door on your left. Hide behind the handily placed piece of cover in the middle of the room and watch him re-enter, walk in front of you and then exit the door. Now you know his route it should be super easy to stealth kill this one as well. Make sure you do it BEFORE he leaves the room though otherwise you will disturb the other runners/clickers.

There's then another runner that hangs around pretty static in another room further down the corridor which you can take out stealthily so do this too.

You're then just left with a one runner and one clicker which should be easy enough to deal with either stealthily or by brute force.

I think it helps to remember that TLOU combat is, in many cases, a set piece that can be beaten by learning the positions or the enemies and working through them one by one. The rarely vary from their preset routes UNTIL you disturb them so as long as you stay quiet and don't get them coming to you your route through a level shouldn't need to alter too much.

Ah, gotcha. I thought it was a longer opening sequence with tons of gore or something.

Can't wait to finally play this tonight!

Played that on normal, also died more times than was fun. Just shoot the clicker with the revolver and pummel the rest.

It's also important not to forget the
Note with the safe combo on it, and the safe itself, of course
.

Well, for me, using listening mode detracts from the atmosphere and enjoyment of the game. Being able to literally see your enemies positions through walls, in real time, just ruins the tense and unpredictable feel of the game, it's that same tense and unpredictable feel of the gameplay that I think is one of the games strongest aspects, and using listening mode takes that away.

Like I've said before, the game does a good enough job of telling you when you're in danger of being spotted with it's audio design (the 'whoosh' sound), so as long as you pay attention to that and remember to check your corners, I don't see the need to use listen
(cheat)
mode.

It's like playing Counter Strike with Wallhack or driving Gran Tourismo with the perfect driving line/lane on.

Without listening mode you have more the "survival" vibe. You have to watch out with panning your camera/hearing if someone or something is near you.

Sometimes i was behind a corner or an obstacle just hiding and waiting for someone to come and still got suprised by the enemy. Seeing them before just takes away alot of the tension. Just my opinion.

+ what Lukas above me said.

There is an option to turn the gore off but that doesn't really hide what you're doing.

I wish that Naughty Dog would team up with thatgamecompany and create a mode that turns the gore into sprouting flowers and things. That way when ever I shiv somebody or explode a head with the shotty it would just sprout flowers out of the body parts that would normally be spraying blood.

The music would probably have to be changed to so instead of the dark menacing score whenever combat is near it would play ice cream truck music or something.

Come on Naughty Dog, what about the kids?!

It was at the part where
a solider shoots Sarah and she dies in Joel's arms.
. It was very choppy, but I haven't had any problems since then so it could of been an anomaly. It could of also been my PS4, but it would be the first problem it has ever had.

The irony is the clickers become far easier when the game gives you a tip in the next section.

They can hear you even when crouched. The key is to move very slowly while crouched, then you're generally ok.

Personally, I just took out everyone else in the room using stealth, then shot the clicker in the head a few times.
At that point I felt like Indiana Jones and was sick of the sneaking around bullshit.

Yeah, as a dad of a girl that about's as old as his daughter in the game, that part hit me hard. Hell, the whole game really tugs at anyone, but I feel like if you're a parent, those desires to protect are really tugged on.

HOLD ME!!

This is the order I cleared that section :

Take out the runner that walks through that back room in the hallway where you start first. Then the 2nd runner that's "patrolling" around the clicker. Those two runners are what made that part so difficult for me, after I downed them the rest of the area was a piece of cake. Finished up by taking a brick to the clicker's face. This section and the next in the
pitch-black area full of clickers
are fucking tense on Survivor without listen mode.
