The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

Gore can be turned off and this game doesn't seem like it's any more violent than Gears of War or God of War, to be perfectly honest.

I think it has more to do with the general oppressive nature of the game, rather than the actual visual violence on screen. Of course it's a combination of both, but combined I think it has a much higher impact than putting a chainsaw through a locust for the umpteenth time.

*Checks OP*

Sweet mother of god!!

Played the demo today (which came with God of War Ascension), and they nailed the atmosphere, I just need to understand on how I'm supposed to take on the zombie things when there's a room full of them, but this game is looking awesome.

By the way, Polygon's reviews overall fall 3.9 points below the average (this info is available on Metacritic).

So the key here is to show that PS3 titles review especially low even accounting for Polygon's general skew.

Even if you demonstrated that there was a deviation from the industry average on Sony exclusives it would be meaningless.

Lol. IGN and credible. Haven't heard that before on NeoGAF.

Re: The people saying, well Polygon did not like the game. I hate FPS, so I would rate CoD, Halo, Killzone all a 1. If I had to write a review though, I most likely would rate them higher, since just because I have zero fun with them, does not mean someone else can have fun with them (and plenty of people have fun with them).

This seems a little bit shameful for Polygon. Not giving it a 10 is fine, heck a 7.5 is fine. But it should be aligned with their other reviews. Giving SimCity a 9.5 and Diablo 3 a 10 and Ni No Kuni a 6.5... well that site obviously is 100% opposite to what I would give those games.

This is seems a little shameful for Neogaf. Not liking Polygon's review is fine. Heck, criticizing it is fine. But your criticism should match up with other posts in this thread. I see some people here championing that review. Heck, I see people in other threads saying things altogether different.

The way weaponry is handled echoes the game’s choices between outright combat and stealth, with the ability to mix in melee combat when needed. You can carry multiple weapons, but they’re stored in your backpack, with just one small gun and one large gun hot swappable at any time. You can pull other guns out when you’re out of ammo or need something a little quieter but it takes time – and the game doesn’t pause when you do anything like this.

I knew this from the demo but its cool you can carry all weapons.

The Last of Us is a memorable gaming experience. One that makes me wonder how the PS3 console could be nearing the end of its life-cycle. The comparisons to Uncharted can’t be ignored and, while it might appear a ‘safe move’ by Naughty Dog on the surface, their new franchise undoubtedly pushes the boundaries in a welcome new direction. They have put their well-polished engine to excellent use and put the emphasis on compelling characters to showcase what this talented studio can really deliver.

It’s harrowing, emotionally driven, action-packed, and impossible to put down once you start.

No, it's not. Polygon's reviews are awful. They're not getting eaten alive for having an opinion, they're getting eaten alive for consistently reviewing games much lower than their contemporaries without offering legitimate explanations for doing so. They give games like Sim City and Diablo 4 high scores and go out of their way to justify it and then completely rail road other games with no reason.

why? did he lied or anything??

I dont mean anything regarding the score, I mean just noting a 7.5 review as something to be all "..right" about. Just weird to point out.

Then again he's no longer at Sony and I meant this in the sense of him working with the company, but I didnt know he was with tapjoy now.

lol Best review of the entire day:

There are not enough words or pages on the internet to describe just how good The Last of Us is. All I am going to say is this: why waste time reading about The Last Of Us when you could be playing it.

That's it, that's the whole thing.

From dailymail.

Not gonna lie, I lol'd.

Crazy how serious people take reviews. Some dudes seriously want Polygon banned from GAF? Crazy!

Yeah, it's so unrealistic to think someone won't score the game lower than others. It doesn't matter how good a game is, there's bound to be someone that doesn't like it as much as everyone else.

Demos don't really work in general for games that are character and story driven like this one, I hope they sre not releasing that god of war demo publicy, might deflate hype from people seeing the perfect scores.

Dat EDGE quote:

"The Last of Us strips away the geek-centric fan service so commonplace in contemporary games."
That quote bothers me, and I suspect is why a lot of reviewers are so responsive to the game.

Justin McElroy famously said that he's ashamed to be involved with the games industry. A lot of reviewers are in their mid-30s and want games that are more adult, not necessarily more advanced in terms of gameplay.

I don't even know why he would bring up geek-centric fan service in a game like this.

How does Metacritic determine how many reviews it uses?

22 Review for Arkham City, 108 for Uncharted 2 and 53 currently for The Last of Us.

It makes no sense to me. Could someone explain this?

Polygon is such a piece of shit site. What a joke. Anybody that visits there is part of the problem.

Never knew gaf was this obsessed with reviews and especially looking to slam those who didnt give this a 10.

Look at Polygon's track record. It's a scumbag site.

people's reactions to violence change depending on the context. God/Gears of war seems equal but the violence is much less noteworthy since it's so common and a staple of that world, whereas TLOU portrays a more realistic kinda thing so it's easy to see how it might jump out much more at you

:lol :lol

they're fucking video games

Have you seen the comments section there? I feel sorry for people that are swayed by that review.

So conflicted on whether or not I should pick this up close to release. The demo was quite a turn off for me (small environments and fairly boring stealth).

The hype will probably get to me eventually...

That's platform specific. Most AC reviews were likely for the 360 version. The PS3 reviews were probably PS fan sites and whatnot.

Just finished reading Edge review and I really liked this sentence :)

but there is emotion even when the game is completely silent. When you crouch behind cover as Joel, he’ll instinctively steady himself by resting one hand against the wall; position yourself close to Ellie and Joel’s arm stretches over her shoulder like the wing of a bird shielding its young.

I don't think it's the IP as much as the developer.

yea but it's like.. few people here have played it.. lol. you can't even project how it would play based on past experiences. i like some developers like square-enix a whole lot yet i wouldn't question the legitimacy of the reviewers who don't enjoy their games, nor would i imagine those games would have a mob behind them.

Joke Post?
Sarcasm?

You can't be serious

?

so on the one hand you have a game where everyone's constantly killing each other in a post apocalyptic future and everyone's ripping heads off as if they were nothing

and in the other hand you have a game that depicts a more realistic looking world with more common interactions and something that feels closer to the real world in general with an emphasis on relatable non-violent characters, and suddenly violence happens

in wich case do you think violence might surprise you/unsettle you more?

im not saying anything against the game dude, im speaking in general and explaining why some people might feel the need to point out the violence

this is the same on any medium

So does anything else change for New Game + than the upgrades carrying over? Cause if so that is pretty useless and isn't exactly what I'd want for a game like this. Honestly I'd rather start a new game.

Also does completing ''Survivor+'' unlock the trophies for other difficulties NG+? Anyone who can comment on that?

Also is the listen mode always turned off on Survivor mode?
