The Last of Us - Review Thread [Emargo up, scores in OP.]

These 2 reviews wont matter since more credible sites like IGN gave the game 10

Lol. IGN and credible. Haven't heard that before on NeoGAF.

Re: The people saying, well Polygon did not like the game. I hate FPS, so I would rate CoD, Halo, Killzone all a 1. If I had to write a review though, I most likely would rate them higher, since just because I have zero fun with them, does not mean someone else can have fun with them (and plenty of people have fun with them).

This seems a little bit shameful for Polygon. Not giving it a 10 is fine, heck a 7.5 is fine. But it should be aligned with their other reviews. Giving SimCity a 9.5 and Diablo 3 a 10 and Ni No Kuni a 6.5... well that site obviously is 100% opposite to what I would give those games.

By the way, Polygon's reviews overall fall 3.9 points below the average (this info is available on Metacritic).

So the key here is to show that PS3 titles review especially low even accounting for Polygon's general skew.

dailymail - 5/5

There are not enough words or pages on the internet to describe just how good The Last of Us is. All I am going to say is this: why waste time reading about The Last Of Us when you could be playing it.

Best review ever :lol There is nothing on the site besides that quote, lol.

I think that's a bit shameful for Jeff Rubenstein

No, it's not. Polygon's reviews are awful. They're not getting eaten alive for having an opinion, they're getting eaten alive for consistently reviewing games much lower than their contemporaries without offering legitimate explanations for doing so. They give games like Sim City and Diablo 4 high scores and go out of their way to justify it and then completely rail road other games with no reason.

The real blessing is that whilst you can’t influence the key events in the story, you’re free to tackle most of the encounters in a way that suits you and your current situation best. Stealth plays a major part in the game, but you can – at least on the lower difficultly levels – attempt a more direct route.

There are times when both tacks are necessary, and times when they overlap with devastating results, but the open nature of each pocket of combat is most welcome. Joel’s not a great shot, but he’s handy with a ‘modified’ baseball bat; he’s not the quietest sneaker, but he can sprint when needed.

IGN is way more credible than Gamespot and is also the biggest gaming site in the world. Almost anyone at GAF would agree with me on this

Who cares how credible they are compared to other gaming sites? None of them have a shred of journalistic integrity when compared to any legitimate news agency, so it's not exactly saying a whole lot.

This thread just confirms my standing on reviews in general. Would be so much better without that illusive final figure at the end.

polygon is perpetually wrong (lol ageis) but I'm not sure it's because of any conspiracy as opposed to them just being collectively retarded.

the Armond White of video game reviews. I don't have a problem with White, I don't have a problem with Polygon.

The only reason they're even an issue is because of the insane weight the industry has placed on review scores so they even can troll for hits in the first place.

One of the main negatives for LoU being that it was too violent.

I agree completely. Anyone who reads my review would be able to tell that I thoroughly recommend the game and would recommend it to most. But stamping that darn number up top brings an angry storm, regardless of how high or low it is.

Just read the Eurogamer review for TLOU, tis exciting. And yes, Eurogamer show once again why they're my go-to for reviews, even if they have a tendency to award every game 8/10 ;)

How spoilerish would you say your review is? I've avoided reading any so far. Also, do you ever venture into System Wars to see how batshit insane people go over your reviews? lol

They gave GTA IV with a 10, so I am always skeptical of their scores. I do read their reviews for the content.

I haven't read any of these reviews as I played the demo and that was enough to sell me on the game.

They are still much better than highly controversial Gamespot/Polygon. Legitimate news agency?? That doesnt exist in real life

Scrolling through the list of 10/10's. It still baffles me. Very impressive for Naughty Dog to to achieve such an average.

They have scored a high quality average throughout this generation. The only odd one out is Uncharted: Drake's fortune.

I wonder what ND's net worth as a business is these days.

Anyone who doesn't think this game deserves a 10 literally has no idea what they're talking about.

Honestly, just buy the game (if you're interested in what you've heard) and read my review afterward. I'm a media-lockout kind of guy, though. Not everyone is as stringent. I love reading other people's thoughts after I complete a game.

Giving out a 7 just for the sake of being contrary isn't any better than giving out 9s or 10s like candy. That's why people hated Jim Sterling for such a long time.

Every review hit at 7am today. There is no way we could have known beforehand what score was "contraction" and what blended in.

Dat EDGE quote:

"The Last of Us strips away the geek-centric fan service so commonplace in contemporary games." "Naughty Dog has delivered the most riveting, emotionally resonant story-driven epic of this console generation."

This game is going to be such a treat.

Gore can be turned off and this game doesn't seem like it's any more violent than Gears of War or God of War, to be perfectly honest.

people's reactions to violence change depending on the context. God/Gears of war seems equal but the violence is much less noteworthy since it's so common and a staple of that world, whereas TLOU portrays a more realistic kinda thing so it's easy to see how it might jump out much more at you

Thanks for the response. That's what I'll do. I much rather go in somewhat blind, not knowing what to expect overall.
