The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky PC |OT|

Looks like we got higher quality character portraits in the status screen, not sure if anything else changed, only played for a few minutes.

So is anyone else still getting almost completely random crashes? I know from reading the thread that they were common when the game first released, but I've installed all the patches, and tried disabling high resolution text, etc... I'm enjoying this game but if it's going to keep doing this, I don't think it's worth continuing to play the game.

I'd report the bug but it happens so randomly I'm not sure what to report. It never seems to happen during battles—so that's something, I guess—and usually happens either during text cutscenes or changing areas. But it can also just happen while I'm walking around. No errors, the game just quits.

There's nothing overly odd about my configuration; I'm running Windows 8.1 with Intel HD 4000... is there anything I can do?

If you have the Steam version it should generate a crash dump file in the game folder, it's a .mdmp file. Email it to support@xseedgames.com and they will give it to Sara and hopefully get it fixed, assuming it's not a conflict with something on your end.

If you disabled both the hi res text and art (which is on by default and was introduced via patch) that's really weird, send them the file like chaosblade said.

Just started this. Did anyone else think it started off slow-ish? I will of course keep playing through but it isn't really grabbing me the same way Lunar or Grandia did. Maybe I'm just older.

To be honest, I felt that the game started awfully slowly. Grandia has a way better pace in that regard. So, no, that's not you, it's the game. Some like it that way, I didn't. However, the game turned out to be really good, and the pace thanksfully speeds up for the last two chapters.

Also, it seems that Trails in the Sky FC is really just a stepping stone for SC, which is the game we all should be looking for.

It definitely starts off slow. The prologue is basically an entire chapter that has nothing to do with the rest of the game's story (aside from its very last main/story quest). It just serves as a tutorial and introduces you to the main characters.

You start getting into the actual story after that, but even then it doesn't really pick up until around the second half of Chapter 2. From that point it moves on pretty steadily. Still, that's around half the game that's "slow."

No, there's a ton of foreshadowing, scene-setting, and early plot starts in that Prologue. I know it's tough pje, but that is necessary, and quality, what you're experiencing right now. The later, faster part of the game needs it to be as effective as it is.

No that's cool I was just wondering if anyone else felt the same.
I'm definitely going to keep working my way through it. Like it quite a bit so far.

In the prologue? I don't remember anything significant that isn't brought up again later (multiple times), or mentioned casually in NPC text various times throughout the game. I could be forgetting something I guess. The only exception being that last quest which kind of leads into other stuff.

WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH

chapter 2 spoilers

I never would have expected the mayor and gilbert to be behind the whole plot, they seemed so friendly like every other npc mayor so far, just wow. Its not even so much them being the bad guys but how truly evil they are just wow

A bit late, but turn off the Hardware Vertex Shaders. That's what (somehow) causes the problem with Intel graphics crashing. The crashes with those graphics are almost always in the Intel driver and only happen with Hardware Vertex Shaders.

High Resolution anything can otherwise be left on.

Hi guys! I've been on the fence with this game for a while, as I've mostly seen it mentioned repeatedly in PSP and JRPG recommendation threads, without anyone really bothering to describe why it is such a great game. A recent positive review of the game in a local games magazine finally made me decide to buy it. I haven't played any games in this series before, and I'm quite confused with the all the different versions of this game. I'm trying to decide between buying this on PSP or on Steam, and I haven't found any definitive list of differences between the two versions. Portability is a huge plus for me, but I'm unsure if I would be missing out on stuff by playing this on PSP. My main concerns are:

1) Aside from the higher definition graphics and a new translation, are there any other changes (e.g. gameplay tweaks, missing content) between the two versions?

2) How large are the differences in the translation between the PSP version and the new PC version? Would I be missing out by playing this on the PSP?

3) Apparently there's some kind of save data import function from FC to SC? Will importing data from PSP to PC or even to Vita work?

4) Kind of related to 1), do both versions have adjustable difficulty settings? The combat is supposedly rather easy in this, so I'd most probably play this on a harder difficulty from the start.

Thanks in advance for answering!

I started the game and at first i felt it was a bit cheesy, but at the end of the prologue things started to look good and now the game become pretty amazing.

Maybe the gameplay isn´t that good, but the characters and the writting/dialogues are really good.

1. Not really. There are better shadows/lightning.

2. It's the same (good) translation.

3. Don't think importing from PSP/Vita->PC is possible.

4. It's been a while since I've played...-starts new game- Hmm, you need to beat the game once to unlock other difficulties in PSP versions, I wouldn't call it too easy though.

1. Not really. There are better shadows/lightning.
PC version also has superior textures, even before considering all the high resolution assets being patched in by XSEED. Between the PC version's innate advantages and the features the PSP version introduced being backported in, XSEED has been working very hard to make sure the PC version is the definitive version of the game.

1. Not really.
2. Not the end of the world or anything, if you're really set on the portability then you're not going to be missing out on a huge amount getting it on the PSP. Basically it's the same translation on the whole, but the following stuff has been changed:
- Some terms and names have been changed slightly for varying reasons, generally either because they were overlocalised (Kloe's crafts were all based on German words and ended up becoming English ones, Mao's name ended up as Matilda, etc.) or because the original translator wasn't aware of how much of an impact the term would have later in the series, because they hadn't played the rest of them.
- Translation errors have been fixed. Some of these don't really matter, some of them do, although I don't think any of them will ruin the game for you or anything; very few people noticed them when the PSP version came out. There's a certain scene in the ending you might want to watch on youtube afterwards if you play the PSP version though, that's probably the most grievous. I'm genuinely curious how many people even noticed most of the corrections, heh. There are quite a lot of them though.
- Minor typos and the like.
3. To PC? No. To Vita? I can't see why it wouldn't, considering you can transfer PSP saves over to the Vita and it's still a PSP game being played on the Vita.
4. Yes, but only if you have a clear save. If you don't, you're stuck playing on normal difficulty for the first run.

Basically, if you really want to play it on the PSP, go for that version, but if you're only slightly inching towards the PSP version, I'd go for the PC one, even if only to avoid confusion down the line because of the term changes and mistranslations. I am biased though, because those matter to me a lot more than to most people.

Are part 2 and part 3 released in english on the psp or going to be released? If not then the pc version should be the only way to go

SC is getting a PSP release (PSN only). They haven't said anything about 3rd, but I'd guess it won't. SC is already going to be releasing after the store is inaccessible from the PSP itself. Kind of a kick in the balls, having to buy the game from a PC or different console is certainly not going to help its sales.

IIRC there isn't a save transfer from SC to 3rd anyway, but I might be mistaken. If there isn't, that wouldn't be a bad point to jump ship from PSP to PC assuming XSEED continues to work on the series after SC.

They better lol I'd be furious if we didn't get all 3 games regardless of how little impact part 3 has on the story :X

Ruan city and region are so nice, I wouldn't mind living there myself. Only unlike duke, I couldn't afford that...

another random thought: only game where escort missions aren't that bad is Trails.

Oh man, I didn't know about the PSN store closing on PSP. It seems like it isn't happening to America yet, but there's only a matter of time I suppose. If it's like a couple years ago, you can still get those games on PC and transfer (I remember that's how I had to download Corpse Party because my PSP wasn't connecting to my router). I'm still going PC for Trails, but there's a few games I may still want to get on PSN like Elminage Original.

Since I finished my FFV fiesta run, I recently started playing TitS again. I'm in Chapter 1 in Bose now, just doing a few quests before I advance in the story. The team just started getting access to more complex Spells like the Area Heal/Tear spell.

They better lol I'd be furious if we didn't get all 3 games regardless of how little impact part 3 has on the story :X

From what I understand, Trails in the Sky the 3rd is more of a bridge from Trails in the Sky to Trails of Zero. If that's the case, then I'd honestly rather we not get the 3rd unless we also eventually got Zero. I mean, if it came out, I'd still play the 3rd, but I'd do so knowing that I'm going to get my mouth wet for even more games that might not come. FC+SC at least makes an open and shut duology from what people are saying, so it'd probably be better for my sanity if we only got those unless Marvelous/Xseed decide to go forward with the series.

It sounds like it's more of a bridge to the entire rest of the series, since Sen also builds from where 3rd leaves off as far as I understand it.

Hmm, I am now slightly concerned about the translation stuff. Apparently the situation is not as bad as with e.g. Final Fantasy Tactics vs. Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. However, my schedule for this fall and next spring is so packed that I'll most probably have very little time to game at home, and instead I'll spend most of my gaming time while commuting. Thus the difference between buying on PSP and buying on PC might as well be "will play this within the next 6 months" vs. "might have time to play this in the next 2 years". Not really sure which version to go with now.

All right, I made a mistake. I tried to replace the combat theme yesterday but failed because I didn't convert the .mp4 into an .mp3 before renaming it to .ogg then I gave up. Today, I launch the game and it has insanely long loading times between areas. It's unplayable. I deleted the mp4 off the folder and inserted the right track back but to no avail. Verifying game cache hasn't done anything either. Am I doomed? Do I have to unistall? Also, does uninstalling the game delete my save files?

You should be able to back up the save to the steam cloud, and if not you should be able to copy the save file info, delete and reinstall the game, then paste your old save data back into the game

Have XSeed commented on how well the PC version has done, sales-wise? Is it "OMG, we're totally committing to localizing every Kiseki game if sales stay this strong" or "eeeeh, we might not even to Third, let alone the games afterwards"?

Well, there was this during the 1st week:
usNhUFn.png

But it's going to be how well Second Chapter does that determines whether we get anymore Kiseki games on PC.

So close to the end of the first game, ahhh so good just met with the
queen
seems like I'm close to the final stretch.

How many copies of this and SC do I need to buy for Xseed to localize all these games because I NEED them

At the final dungeon, been switching characters around as I explore not really sure who to take with me to the final boss gauntlet. The only character I'm pretty sure I'm not taking is Tita because she's super frail and somehow I doubt her easy blind all ability will be that useful.

Tita's great for crowd control, especially in the final dungeon where her regular attack can hit several enemies at once in their starting formation. Sticking a Petrify or Deathblow I quartz on her can lead to hilarious results.

She really doesn't do well in boss battles, though.

Yeah, I do really like Tita, it's just half the enemies in the final dungeon are immune to status alignments making her smoke cannon (and her) useless. Smoke cannon and giving her petrify or freeze leads to hilarious results in large group battles where half the enemies are crippled or dead after one attack. It's too bad her only really good place to shine in FC was the Limestone Cave as most of the random encounters in the fields in chapter 3 were very easy.

Honestly I wish the game didn't give you the full party so late, I imagine this won't be as big of an issue in SC. Agate in particular gets screwed being playable for very brief snippets before the final dungeon.

So. Is there any guide for all the missable sidequests? I dont want to follow a whole walkthrough, thats why I am wondering if someone made a guide just for the missables in this game.

I've been following this guide and if does a great job of alerting you to all missable stuff minus the liberl newspapers with minimal spoilers

http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/979866-the-legend-of-heroes-trails-in-the-sky/faqs/62079

Honestly with the way trails is structures and how some of the missables work you need close to a full guide to not miss any as their are some EXTREMELY tiny windows for certain quest

A guide for missables would be an entire walkthrough since there are things opening up and ending with nearly every story event. Plus some story events give varying amounts of BP depending on whether or not you do them right or do everything.

I can't say I've seen a specific guide for that though.
