The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky PC |OT|

Any news on the sequel's PC release?

Not really. Excellent progress is being made, and I think a proper QA cycle is juuuuuust about ready to begin (which should give you an idea of just how MUCH progress is being made!), but how long that QA cycle lasts is anyone's guess -- we've literally not even worked on a game half this size before, so QAing it is definitely going to be a behemoth of a task.

It definitely won't be out this year, but it definitely *will* be out next year, and hopefully it won't take more than another couple months before we can iron out an exact release date, which theoretically should be sometime in the first half of the year.

Words like "hopefully" and "theoretically" are about as precise as I can get right now, though. ;)

That'll give me plenty of time for a replay. My backlog being what it is, it'll be a while yet before I can commit to another playthrough.

People are already cracking wise that SC will be out before Monster Book is patched into FC.

So I just completed the prologue and I can definitely understand the praise this game receives. It really does achieve the "classic olden day" feel of JRPGs from the '90s that most people hold up to a pedestal.

Ah, actually, due to popular demand, work on the monster guide has resumed -- it was previously shelved temporarily while Sara focused her efforts on getting Corpse Party PC ready for release, but she's now splitting her time between getting the monster guide implemented AND getting Corpse Party PC finished. So hopefully, you can expect some quality monster guiding soon(-ish).

News of progress are still great, so appreciated. Looking forward to it. And hopefully with the success of the PC version that upcoming Ys PS4 game comes to the west as well.

I don't think that's even in question. It's Ys, which has been really successful for XSEED across the board. More of a matter of time than anything, what would be really surprising is if XSEED were to choose not to localize it.

And SC updates are always appreciated. Jess has commented here and there on Twitter about various things but knowing QA should start fairly soon is a pretty big update.

Hopefully it goes better than the FC QA!

Get hyped then. Will buy the living shit out of those two games.

I bought all the Ys games on steam the other day and gifted Trails in the Sky to a buddy, I'm very much in love with Xseed right now keep it coming!

You'll know something truly definitive when I cut my hair. :p

So I am a bit lost now. I am in
Bose and I need to find the two Liberl News reporters to see if they know anything else but I can't find them. I since tried doing some quests in the guild to see if they would turn up but they still haven't. Am I doing something wrong? If not where are they?

This was a bit painful.
They are in the cheaper restaurant in the center of the city. Nial should be sitting at the table when you go up the stairs. Took me a while to find him.

Good news everyone: Trails in the Sky is the #2 top-seller in GOG's winter sale, just under The Witcher 3 (which is rarely topped). I hope this continues for when Steam does its sale.

The better this game sells, the more likely it is for other games ib the series to get localized.

Is there a chance for the third Trails game to be localized?

Sounds like the better SC does, the better The 3rd's chances are.

It needs to do pretty damn well to make them go to the trouble. And it'd probably be 2-3 years before we see it.

Fingers crossed, though. Doing my part when SC hits Steam.

It needs to do really well because it seems like doing anything after SC is basically showing commitment to the series. 3rd is a bridge between the Liberl and Crossbell arcs, which is tied to the Erebonia arc, so you end up with this big messy web with everything being interconnected after that point.

How well has Trails in the Sky sold? Has XSeed made any comments about their thoughts of the game's sales?

Also I would be shocked if we get another games after the third one, being that Falcom stopped making games on PC but on Sony handhelds instead.

Just that it was 'their most successful launch on PC to date'.

Also Falcom need to put the Japanese script in the Chinese PC version of Ao already. Zero *has* a PC version, so that could be localised just fine, but Ao doesn't. And you wouldn't really want Zero without Ao.

Well that's good news. I looked up the newer games and it seemed that the series has moved full 3D. That seems disappointing to me because I feel that the 2D sprites with 3D backgrounds work so well.

I continue to pray to gaming jeebus that FC and SC do amazing and XSeed will say "fuck it #YOLO" and localize all these games because even having just played FC I really am in a case of "NEED IT" for the rest of the series.

I would imagine anyone following this thread is in the same mindset. Kiseki games simply scratch that JRPG itch that can sadly be found little elsewhere these days.

Not only that, but they (well at least FC) did it so damn well the game was pretty close to perfection. I've spent a lot of time the past few years going back and playing the classics I missed (Grandia, Suikoden 1-3, and Persona 3 to name a few) and Trails really just stood out as something really special.

It saddens me that on GAF of all places (where people should be seeking out precious gems like Trails in the Sky), it doesn't get nearly as much exposure as the next Square Enix blunder du jour.

GAF barely talks about Shin Megami Tensei IV, let alone Trails.

I overestimated the niche population of Gaf (or they are spread out much more thin over a multitude of franchises).

What? SMT4 is brought up all the time in many threads, and the main thread had a ton of pages (more than Lightning Returns, any Tales game, and maybe even FFXIII-2 not sure).
I hardly ever see it mentioned in RPG threads or 3DS threads. Just it's (excellent) OT.

If you look at "recommend me a RPG" type threads, it is really mentioned.

Probably because there are far better games to mention. Like the one this thread is about for example. SMT IV just has the advantage of being a recently released JRPG and we haven't had that many of those. None that weren't made by CH anyway.

Trails certainly gets brought up a lot. Always mentioned in recommendation topics for PSP games or RPGs, and before SC was re-announced practically every thread remotely related to XSEED or one of their releases devolved into a mess of "GIVE US SC."

For GOG people like myself, there's a TITs update, haven't had a chance to check whats in it yet though.

Just some minor performance fixes.

There may be another update shortly, though, so if anyone's looking to rush in and grab the newest version, you might want to wait until later today or tomorrow.

I thought the bestiary was out by now.

Anyway, I really need a release date for SC, I hope we get it soon. I wonder if February is too optimistic at this point.

I'd guess March at the earliest but probably a bit after that, given the way things tend to go. They definitely don't want to release the game in the same state FC was in when it came out. Plus they are also working on Corpse Party, the monster guide/FC fixes, and they have limited resources to work on those PC games (just Sara).

Not planning to get the PSP version, but I'm curious how it's faring and whether or not a simultaneous release is in the cards. With Brandish still not out I'm kind of thinking no.

We apparently *are* planning on a simultaneous PSP release for SC, though whether or not that pans out remains to be seen.

Either way, February is definitely too early for SC. Even March might be pushing it. We'll see how things go, though, once official QA begins.

You're totally gonna release it within days of The Witcher 3 aren't you?

Monster Guide is in! But, there's a catch.

As posted on our Facebook:

Good news for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky players on PC – the long-awaited Monster Guide has finally arrived and is looking great! If you apply the latest patch to any release version of the game, you should find it up and ready to go. With this, the game is now 100% feature-complete, and we thank you all for your patience.

The bad news, however, is that there were a few crossed wires in the code, so to speak, and… well… long story short, the game has not actually been keeping track of all the monsters you’ve killed up till now. So when you load up your save game and check your Monster Guide, it’s, uh, going to be kind of blank and will need to be populated by re-encountering previously seen monsters.

…Yeah, we’re very sorry for the inconvenience, but the Monster Guide is a cool addition overall, so please check it out – this is now very much the definitive version of Trails in the Sky in every single regard, and we couldn’t be prouder to count it as part of our PC lineup.

* * *

So yeah, that's bad news for a lot of you. But remember, Monster Guide data doesn't actually count toward any Steam achievements, so this is purely a bonus for those of you who really like collecting things. It sucks that you'd have to play the game again to fill up the book, but there's not really any reward for doing so -- it is its own reward entirely.

Sorry again either way, however, and I do hope y'all enjoy it in the end, hiccup or no!

Thanks for the update! I guess I'll be replaying this game soon - I love reading flavor text.

How does the Monster Guide work? Do you get a description of the monster/enemy after you've defeated it once, or do you have to beat it multiple times?

Ouch! Sucks when things don't go as planned, especially when you were all so adamant that adding the book in was going to go without a hitch. Not a big D on my end but I'm sure there were a few people who might find this news unsettling, including those currently working on a playthrough right now.

Just saw the news about the monster guide being added. I did just fine without it, but I'm contemplating replaying before SC comes out to collect a few achievements and to re-apply some hype sauce. If I do, then that will be a nice plus.

I just reached the large port city with the drawbridge. I guess I am liking the game alright as it has some charming moments. But overall I am kinda losing interest. Approximately how far am I into the game percentage-wise if someone would be so kind?
