If I have enough money I might grab the winter village as well. But that is a big if.

And I was bored tonight, and wont start the Death Star time lapse until tomorrow or Thursday, so I took apart a set and rebuilt it tonight.

GUESS THE SET!

Oh man, i've been eyeing that set. Limited space and funds, plus an unhealthy fixation on awesome spaceships and planes, means that the Quinjet will soon be joining my Fury Interceptor... what's your take on the set? I love its lines, especially from the front and the top.

I did a pic review of it a month or two ago when I bought it. LOVED the set. Fantastic build, and the swoosh-ability of it goes to 11. Probably the swooshiest set out right now.

You've perfectly summarized why I bought FB a few weeks ago.

Is...is your thumb ok?

Woooooooooooooooooo!

E: What on earth is up with yo thumb?

I've been thinking for weeks that buying Fire Brigade is sort of the Lego-GAF equivalent of becoming a "made man," but so far the idea doesn't seem to have much traction. ;p It should be the trigger finger, but the LEGO builder's most important finger is his opposable one.

I still love that you used the term "swooshability" in your review of the set. I almost bought it. Who knows, I still might.

Ha. That's a hell of a commitment to the thread, I love it....as long as you didn't actually prick your finger.

You certainly picked the right set for it. I have zero interest in "city" style themes but the paranoia about FB going OOP was enough to convince me that I needed it.

You got your wings now.

Since this is the first year I've really bought LEGO (my mom did the buying when I was a kid), I am curious about this; does LEGO do any kind of sale for Black Friday? Specifically online, since the closest LEGO store is 200+ miles away.

Last year:

LEGO Shop@Home Brick Friday Deals November 25-28
Brick Friday is here! It’s technically here, since it’s 12:00am EST. Anyways, LEGO Shop@Home has put together some pretty nice deals for Brick Friday which starts today November 25th and ends Monday November 28th:

· Free Limited Edition Holiday set featuring Santa Minifigure with orders of $99 or more.
· FREE Shipping on all orders of $49 or more.
· All offers Valid: Nov 25th – 28th
· Offers Combinable – No Code Required

LEGO is also putting a lot of sets from a variety of themes on sale for 25% off. I assume the 10% off all orders of $149 and up discount does not stack. I’ve listed the original price along with the discounted price. Prices should also be good in store as well:

I am totally fine with many of us here being members of the Sopranos crew. Although I still think I would be Paulie, even if I am fine being Tony. But Ghostmind being Silvio is absolutely perfect.

But who would be Bobby? And what poor soul would be Ralphie? And who is badass enough to be Furio?

I don't think anyone on here would be Johnny Sack or Phil Leotardo though. No competing crew.

It has only been a few months since I did an epic Sopranos marathon. I feel another coming on. Dammit. Great drama, or greatest drama?

Pretty good drama? I understand the love for the show, but in my mind there are a few other HBO show I found more entertaining, overall.

Sopranos is one of those shows that you have to take in chunks and is impossible to just show one episode or two to show people why it's great. But once you start, you are stuck.

Once I think I'm out...

Although, if there was one episode to show to anyone and make them want to try the show, it would be Pine Barrens.

The show kind of lost me around the 4th season. Don't get me wrong, it is a good show, but if given a choice I would choose Oz, Deadwood, or The Wire to watch over it.

mrklaw is a shoo-in for Furio as far as I'm concerned...

I was planning to skip the tripod and the UFO, but with a classic space theme on the way I am having second thoughts. Any impressions of those sets? I think they're still pretty cheap.

edit: You know what would be an interesting MOC contest? Microscale avatars.

Random musing time!

I was looking at Fallingwater in my office at work today...I keep it on one of the extra shelves my desk has. I have a thing for the Architecture line, even though it's slightly overpriced. It's one of the lines I really enjoy assembling and displaying for the sake of display. I imagine the fact that I'm a structural engineer helps with that, ha. They also get a lot of attention at the office. I've now become "the LEGO guy", which is TOTALLY rad with me. I even had a coworker bring me a Toy Story Army Man polybag he found in his basement because he didn't think his daughter would appreciate it as much as me, haha. It's sort of crazy, but super rad.

But back on Fallingwater. I can't help but feel like it's lacking. It was my first Architecture set, AND it was my first set that brought me out of my dark ages years ago. It holds a very near and dear place to me. But even still, it's missing something. I've seen the crazy good MOCs re-imagining Wright's original design, but I've not really found a good intermediate build...One that keeps the same scale but improves upon the overall feel of the model. As much as I like and appreciate what that model does, it really lacks some of the finesse that the later Architecture sets have.

Even something as simple as the Space Needle or the Sears Tower have a more "proud" feel them (despite their tiny piece count and footprint). I mean, the new Villa Savoye makes me all hot and bothered - it's SO classy looking, and I simply cannot WAIT to pick it up. Fallingwater is a great set (and an iconic building), but I can't help feeling like there's room for improvement in such a way that the newer sets have adopted.

The things us LEGO GAF think about...

The local toy shop has a stack of Fire Brigades. Problem is, since this is Sweden there is a general policy of "death before sales" so they're stuck at a nice $250 and probably will be until the end of time.

Can anyone suggest a good place in the UK for picking up specific Lego bricks? I spotted a few odd pieces in my daughter's Bin 'O Lego™ and Googled the part numbers, then spent the rest of the evening assembling components to find she has:

  • A near-complete Naboo Starfighter (7877)
  • A Spyrius Lunar Launch Site (6959) that just seems to be missing the big base piece, a few small components and one of the minifigures
  • Around 75% of a Rebel Roadster (6538)
  • Around 50% of a Landspeeder (7110)
  • Around 25% of a Rescue Helicopter (6482)

...plus some random Pirate figures and other blocks.

I'd quite like to complete the kits for her by buying the necessary blocks, so where's best to start hunting?

there is only one viable answer really, bricklink.com
its fracking confusing in its layout and functionality, but once you know what you are doing its very powerful.

Ah, I did see Bricklink while looking for instructions online. I'm just having a look and it looks pretty promising. I can easily make up a list of the missing components from the instructions and the partial kits, so it just seems to be a matter of slogging through the site to see if they're available and for how much. Luckily, the missing pieces from the Spyrius set and the Star Wars minifigs aside, nothing seems to be too "exotic" so I'm hoping I can snap them up for a reasonable price.

if you have your wanted list ready there is a very neat option under the wanted list tab
"My Wanted List By Shop"
that will then easily tell you what shops have alot of the stuff from your wanted list.
the prizes of bricks will often vary greatly between shops but never the less its usually easier to oder from as few shops as possible.

Ah, excellent. I'll be making it up tonight, so I'll bear that in mind. There seem to be quite a few places with minimum orders, but if I try and grab all the components in one go I shouldn't have a problem with that.

It's absolutely fantastic so far, though - I don't think I've been unable to find anything yet, and even the biggest piece (the missing baseplate from the Spyrius set) is only a few quid. She'll be absolutely delighted if we can get these pieces and complete the sets - she was chuffed when she realised that her box of bits actually had proper kits in :-)

Don't. The Tripod Invader is one of the best/most playable sets I've ever owned. The Clinger alone is worth it, but detaching the UFO from its base makes for some great fun. Plus it's incredibly affordable at less than $20. The LEGO Store even had them for $9 the other day. Same with the UFO Abduction set: Great flying saucer with a red light brick for an excellent price!

The Alien Mothership is also a great set and is on clearance at the LEGO store, LEGOLAND, and many other places for $30. At that price you're practically stealing Hypaxxus-8 and Captain Ploovie, his Alien Clinger! (Who are stealing the news reporter!)

Don't forget to grab the Alien Villainess from Minifigs Series 8 as well. She's the only dress piece in 8, making her incredibly easy to scope out.

...I'm going to miss Alien Conquest and Dino. Never got my Ankylosaurus. :(

Seconded.

As I said upthread, I grabbed one for my daughter and it's fantastic. A fun build, and very playable. She's keen on the rest of the Alien Conquest sets now, and if they're half as good I'll be getting her more.

what do you have planed then?

I've been toying with two ideas. The first would be a multi-level architectural layout. Interest was sparked again after seeing THIS.

1335736459m_SPLASH.jpg

The second would be like a cruise ship shopping promenade or a mall-like design similar to the area in Dead Rising (the open layout with the escalator in the middle and shops on the sides). I'm not looking to recreate a modular for a town, just wanting to do a neat layout design.

For people looking into the Alien Conquest line, the sets are disappearing from many stores, so jump quick.

Also, the local BN store here has a bunch of stuff marked for clearance, but they told me the sale doesn't start until Monday. I am hoping for some good Lego at half price there, because one day they had a bunch of Earth Defense Force sets, but today there are none. Crossing my fingers that is on sale Monday.

My recent haul:

Going to build the Winter sets along with the 2012 Winter set with my girlfriend when she is home from school. Got the Haunted House to keep me busy while she is gone and put on display for Halloween.

That is quite a haul. I am really tempted to get my wife the Winter Village for her birthday. It's such a lovely set. I could definitely see myself adding in those other two by Christmas.

No Lego for me for the time being. The previous owner of my home did a pop in on Monday and made me an offer I can't refuse. I need to find, buy, and move into a new house by December 1st!
