I really want them to test the waters with an UCS style LOTR set.

And I think another thing with the Hobbit sets is that I don't have the emotional attachment to the scenes yet since the movie isn't out. The book sure, but since they are lifted from the movie I think that might help.

I grabbed an X-Wing from Target tonight...couldn't resist. I think it'll be my last Lego purchase for the next handful of months.

You have made a wise choice with the sex wing. Wise choice.

Then, in a few months, get a TIE fighter and Y wing to complement it.

I haven't tried to part out GG or anything because of, simply put, my fear of not knowing what I am doing. I don't have the time to figure it all out at this point. I need a good long vacation and then I might be able to sit down and do it. I will probably just end up buying a GG off ebay or a full set from Brinklink by then though.

Ha. If you attempt to Bricklink a set with around 2,000 pieces...

You're gonna have a bad time.

BL is one hell of a powerful tool, but its very nature also makes it ridiculously time consuming and potentially frustrating. No one vendor - or even five vendors, for that matter - is going to have all the pieces you need. Then there's the waaaaaiting and the possibilty of slow processing, etc. Sometimes the extra cash is worth the convenience, but yeah; with something like GG, it's a lot of extra cash to buy it NIB.

I only got about a third of the way through pricing GG, and it was already at $250 in pieces and that's completely excluding shipping costs. $150 of that was in a specific green brick that could probably be swapped out, but that's still pricey and I was only a third of the way through pricing it. Seems like at least on that specific set you'd be better off just paying $530-575+ it goes for on bricklink for a new set (or $460+ for a complete used set). Didn't seem to be much of a savings (and likely none at all), but I'm sure on some sets it's probably works out better.

Not yet - wrapping up Robie House still. :p

You still aren't done with it? Thought you finished it quite some time ago. I feel weird. It seems like builds are dragged out by everyone, while I usually just power through them. I think I am one of the few that does not have a backlog at all either because of that. Guess we all have different styles to doing it.

And congrats again on the Death Star. The next step is convincing you that you need the Imperial Shuttle before it disappears.

I am not entirely sure where to share this, especially considering unless one of you is a High School student I'm not sure anyone can attend, but I'm just so damn blown away.

One of my long long time internet friends works for Lego and is going to be giving a Ted Talk at TEDxYouth@SanDiego

I mean if it isn't already enough that she got a job at LegoLand in the first place, she's then a Lego model designer and now giving TED talks about Lego and sock monkeys.

I want that career trajectory.

Instead I look for Tom Baker style Doctor Who mini figures just so I can recreate Horror of Fang Rock with my Lego lighthouse

The only reason it takes me so long is because I build while doing other things. I've done Robie by doing a few pages every day while playing WoW, my Vita, and watching horror movies, haha.

I did the SSD in about a week, though - a bag a day or so. It just depends on what I've got on my plate at the time. I don't want to start the Death Star yet because I'm moving to a new apartment next week. I'll make that my inaugural set in the new place, haha. Hell, I've still got Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium in box waiting for me, too...

BUT! The new apartment is a 2br, and the second br is going to be my toy/computer room so my soon-to-be wife can watch TV and relax in peace. :p

I usually clear off my coffee table and build while watching TV or movies. Just spread it out over two days or so (or 1 if I have the day off) and also get in some TV time. Only time I dont multitask is when doing the time lapse videos.

Speaking of which, I have thought of doing one of Fire Brigade, Grand Emporium, Pet Shop, AND Town Hall being built all at once. The only issues I see: Having enough containers to hold all those pieces (around 10k), and enough space to have the containers laid out to build but also have all the sets combined in one shot.

I think I've figured out the dwarf minifigs for each Hobbit set:

79001 (Escape from Mirkwood Spiders) Fili, Kili
79002 (Attack of the Wargs) Bifur, Thorin
79003 (An Unexpected Gathering) Balin, Bofur, Bombur, Dwalin
79004 (Barrel Escape) Gloin, Oin
79010 (The Goblin King Battle) Dori, Nori, Ori

So to get them all, you'll need to buy all the sets, save for the cheapest one. Not surprising.

Also keep in mine that there are still 2 more Hobbit movies that will probably have sets coming out around the same time. (They have to, right? No way they don't do a set with the Dragon and the treasure cave).
There will probably be more sets with the Dwarves in them. It will probably take a long time, but you probably wont have to buy all of this first batch to get all the dwarves.

P.S. I am SO INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTED that I missed out on this Walmart sale (started my new job halfway through the pay period, so I get paid NEXT week).
In a way it is a good thing because I really don't have the space for the Modulars (plus I'm already satisfied with the Mini's)
I hope there will be some great Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales next month to pick up some of the ones I do want.

P.P.S It looks like the Farnsworth House is 50% off on Walmart still for $35. Good price, but it's not really a set I'm interested in, unfortunately.

My first encounter with bricklink was getting the pieces for Cafe Corner. That was painful and I ended up with a bunch of duplicate orders. Main thing is to get a flow going. Always check which wanted list is being used for searches, because it defaults to everything each time. Check whether you're looking for new or used pieces (a few orders I accidentally ordered both without realising so got double). And get into the habit of removing pieces from your wanted list after ordering. There is a way to do that fairly simply but I can't remember right now.

I only got about a third of the way through pricing GG, and it was already at $250 in pieces and that's completely excluding shipping costs. $150 of that was in a specific green brick that could probably be swapped out, but that's still pricey and I was only a third of the way through pricing it. Yeah, green grocer is borderline for bricklink IMO. Older sets like cafe corner are worthwhile but if the markup isn't insane then just buy it - especially if it has some rare pieces which will be expensive on bricklink (even more if you have to source from lots of sellers)

Anyone looking to take advantage of the Target sale, check online first. The TIE Fighter was $5 cheaper online over the store. Free shipping and 5% off with the red card too.

I kind of like them but not love them enough to purchase them when they first come out. I'm sure I'll buy them eventually when they come out though!

I'm guessing they'll do sets for the first Hobbit Movie, then more LOTR sets a half year later, then sets for the second Hobbit movie, etc.

Didn't expect this at all, but the Y-Wing turned out to be way more fun to put together than the Winter Village House, even with all the identical sections. Just way too many little crappy pieces on that one, until you get to the snow covered top it's mostly all 1x1 and 2x2. And I didn't expect the SW set to be as solid as it was, similiar to the Space Shuttle in that regard. Had feared it would be flimsy like that white fighter (yeah, not a SW fan ;)).

This is probably the first time I had more fun putting together the accesoires than I did the main building.

That might be why I'm not digging them, I generally don't get excited about playsets at all.

The only playset I have is that damn Death Star. But for some reason, after all the talk from Bone and ghostmind, I don't look at it like a playset anymore. It definitely has this odd nostalgic glow to it now.

But LotR, Hobbit, and even Monster Fighter have minimal impact on me. The Haunted House looks neat, but even it looks too much like a playset. I wouldn't mind the modular mod that someone did on it, though.

I usually clear off my coffee table and build while watching TV or movies. Just spread it out over two days or so (or 1 if I have the day off) and also get in some TV time. Only time I dont multitask is when doing the time lapse videos.

I always build from one large heap or container, wouldn't need multiple containers to build ;p

sorting my bricks on the other hand that is done very methodically one container for each brick type.

Better expandable pics of the Hobbit sets (missing 79000):
I wonder why 79001 (the one with the spiders and elves) is labeled as a special hobbit trilogy preview set. I thought that scene would be in the film? guess not?

Once you have gandalf, bilbo (who looks way too much like samwise, especially the LEGO version), the 13 dwarves... there's really not a lot of minifigs to fill out the next two years of Hobbit sets. There are more, sure, but it's really front-loaded.

True dat. Well you still have Radagast, Saruman and the Necromancer but that's about it.

I am not to fond of the sets. So far all of the Tolkien stuff is a bit underwhelming. The minifigs are absolutely awesome, but I am not too crazy bout the sets.
I have only bought Gandalfs arrival so far.

Bag end look great though and maybe I'll get the small set with Gollum.

thats a slippery slope, just remember they are cooler than stamps* :p

*not that I have anything agains philately

Haha - fantastic!

Related, I don't see myself ever collecting minifigs. It doesn't help that I didn't start with series 1, but I just don't get the allure of it. I prefer my bricks over my figs. :3

Does anyone know if the Town Hall or Death Star ever came back in stock at Walmart online over the past 24 hours? I have been refreshing occasionally and the Town Hall is now showing at $132.57, but the Death Star is still showing $289.23.

I think that they must have, but I've been refreshing pretty constantly so it must have been brief. Both Town Hall and Tower Bridge show at slightly different prices than they were previously (Tower Bridge went up like 2 or 3 dollars) but still OOS. Not sure about the Death Star, wasn't checking that one.

I refreshed at least once every ten minutes over the weekend starting Saturday around noon and never saw Tower Bridge or the Death Star in stock.

There's only ONE thing LEGO lacks that I wish they were capable of producing...

Roller Coasters.

K'Nex has that market by the balls. I used to have one of the coasters, and looking back at some of the sets they offer now, I can't help but marvel at the glory of some of them. But as it stands, LEGO is basically incapable of producing anything like that at the moment. I've done some research, but the only feasible design is via 4.5v track, and no way will I be trying to bulk buy that stuff, ha.

YOUR DOING IT WRONG!!! lol

BAH! Even if I get multiple sets at once, I still power through the builds because I am too excited to build. None of this dragging it out stuff! I build something, then at the end I am like Agent Smith: "MORE!"

This is a prime example of how different every LEGO builder is. If you did this, I would give you SO many internet brofists.

That would be a BIG logistical nightmare. But fun at the same time. Not to mention it would take forever. That Fire Brigade/Town Hall combo build was hard enough to find space for. Now double that? *shudders* Give me time and I will probably do it though. :)

And if anyone hasn't seen that build:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb_5AS5W-xU&feature=share&list=UUGitvow7KdL-ANexCwl-nvg

I always build from one large heap or container, wouldn't need multiple containers to build ;p

sorting my bricks on the other hand that is done very methodically one container for each brick type.
When doing a set fresh, I just have a container for each bag. When doing rebuilds or time lapse, I have a container for piece types. Meaning I have a container for nothing but tiles (no studs), and a container for all the 1x1 pieces (round or square). One for all the 1x2 bricks, but with the 1x4 bricks mixed in. If I am mixing pieces I make sure it is three or so different types that can easily be identified by just glancing. Basically mix a bin with 1x2, 1x4, and 1x6. Then another bin gets 1x3, angle pieces, and 1x8. Cuts down on containers and still gives me some organization.

The issue with trying that with 10k pieces is simply how many containers it would take, and then the footprint of four large baseplates as well. The more I talk about it, the more I wanna do it. :)

Wow at that Lloyd ZX. I know its supposedly rare, but to pay $19.99 for one minifig is a little steep (for me at least). I remember when white suit Sensei Wu first came out it was pricey, but that came down significantly.

Because the only other option to get the green ninja is to buy a $120 set.

Your kid wants the green ninja, so do you buy the $120 set or the $20 minifig?

Dang, I gotta take my X-Wing apart. I got it all together and the gears to open/close the wings isn't working. I think the big tan gear is warped so that it won't grip on the smaller one. Shit.

I've hit a bit of a brick wall (no pun intended). I still have a bunch sitting unbuilt for a few months now. even ran out and got the 4x4 crawler in the first few days, but its still not been touched.

Maybe it was the summer and running around keeping the kids busy, or maybe it was work. I'm hoping that the darker nights will bring more lego time. Really want an excuse to pick up the haunted house during double points..

I build in cycles like it sounds like you do. Sometimes, a break after a mega spending stream is smart. Don't burn yourself out (I've done that once before).

Already OOS, good lord.

I'll probably get that set at some point just because, but it really just doesn't do much for me. Aside from it being so popular due to just being Minecraft, I wonder if this is one of those sets that people are buying multiple copies of to re-create Minecraft creations or something like that.

I'll put a LOT of money on the fact that most people buying it are looking to resell it. It has a ridiculous ROI right now. I'm just glad I got my order from the LEGO store in last week.
