Awesome thread!
All my old school lego was either given to younger cousins, or confiscated by my mother for her grandkids... if I meet a nice lass and pop some out, I can has my legoz back?
My current collection is all Star Wars sets... need to start buying bulk random pieces so I can build a whole town.

I'm hanging out for a new Millenium Falcon... still haven't got round to building my UCS one yet, still in the original packing box behind the couch

I have ~60 different Star Wars lego sets. That's after I scaled back a little and got rid of the Clone Wars cartoon stuff. The prize of my collection is a full Episode III display I managed to score from a Toys R Us that was closing. It lights up and makes sounds.
Luckily I've reached the point where most new releases are just duplicates of stuff I already have. Tantive IV is the only set tempting me right now. Unfortunately the closet I have my sets stored in is completely full. I have no place to put it. That problem will be solved though when the UCS SSD comes out. Then I'll be forced to find a new storage location.

Just built the commuter train, my daughter loves that it really works. My wife has the new creator light house to build and I have the Tantive IV still to build.
We are a Lego family.

So this will probably be the best place to ask... I play the Arkham Horror boardgame, which requires a LOT of cards. I've seen people online use Lego to build storage for them, could anyone recommend a decent set to get me started on doing the same? Something preferably with a bunch of flat base parts and single-width blocks for seperators etc.

Question for lego collectors: how do you display your collections? I'm thinking maybe shelves but that might look ugly in the living room.
Oh man I remember this stuff. I actually still have most of the sets built up in boxes in the attic. Couldnt bear tearing them down or selling them. The space shuttle set is still up in my closet at my parents house, along with the airport and a bunch of other space and town sets.

Man, I prefer a lot of those older Lego sets where they were more original. I don't like how most of them these days seem to be licensed after something. Lego blocks are awesome on their own, they don't need no stinkin' licenses!

I painstakingly went through my Lego collection and found all my old Harry Potter sets. Didn't have many but it was a weekend job to sort the big box and multiple bags and then find all the pieces. Thank the heavens for Lego's idea to put all the old instructions up on their website.
Recreated my Gringotts bank (4714), Troll on the Loose (4712), and the Sorting Hat (4701). I'll post some pics later but it was cool building them back up from literally nothing. It's one thing to build from the box but I had never done this before. Back around 2001 / 2002 I broke down all my sets and combined them all into one big storage box. Now I realize that was a huge mistake. Not having most of my instructions I don't even remember what sets I actually have in there. I can't figure out if I actually have one more Lego Harry Potter set or not because I have some pieces that I scream Harry Potter to me.

Does anyone else feel that the creativity is lost with all the pre-formed parts. It has been a while since I bought any. But it looks like the challenge has been taken out.

I was given this as a present off my Grandfather whilst he was visiting the UK, and there were parts missing inside.... I never got to finish the build. Devastated, the biggest set of Lego I ever bought and I never got to finish it.
I was given this set by my Dad, and proceded to build it whilst sat in the back of his car on the way to Bristol Zoo. Unknown to me at the time, reading/building lego sets in a car would make me very ill. As we pulled up at Bristol Zoo, so I threw up over the back of my Dad's seat and the Lego. Lame.
Two reasons that I want to one day have kids
1 - I can build a trainset in the attic
2 - I can get them into Lego

I have that set. My sister, who's a teacher, just borrowed it to teach her kids about the shuttle. I was a space and plane nut as a kid, so that set was just awesome.
I agree. When I was a kid, I would build off the instructions once, when I first opened the new set. Then when I got bored, I would take it apart and build whatever I wanted, and would never at the instructions again.Dutch Mafia said:

I went to legoland before work to pick up my son's birthday present. And they've recently updated their store, so they have a 'hard to find' section and they're stocking the architecture range.
So I had pretty much all of my wishlist right in front of me, tempting me.
- Star Wars Imperial shuttle. Yes, the lovely big one.
- Tower bridge. So nice, so huge. But so many tiny brown pieces.
- Grand emporium and Fire brigade from the modular town series.
- Imperial flagship.
- Lego cargo train set. This is mostly because we had lego trains when I was a kid and enjoyed them. And now they're remote controlled!
Luckily its all too expensive at the moment, but if legoland do a 'spend £100 and get a free annual pass' like they sometimes do, I'm in there.

Definitely. The thing is that lego probably wouldn't sell any sets if it had the 'lo-res' look of the sets from twenty years ago. People can't deal with that level of abstraction anymore. At least they made the 'creator' series to mimic older sets with more basic blocks.
I'll admit, though, that I do like some of the new parts and if this is what needs to happen for lego to stay in business, it's all good.
