See, I want the SSD for the displayability. I was so glad to finally see a constructed one when I was at the Lego store. I was debating between the SSD and the Death Star, but the age of the Death Star is what pushed me to it, and the ppb. Well, and the insane amount of minifigs that came with it. I think that is the thing I was a complete sucker for. The SSD just looks so fucking intimidating when together. It is just so massive. Definitely a "man set."

However, now that I am partway done with the Death Star, my wife is getting excited about it. The sets with all the little flourishes and play areas she finds really fun and neat to display.

I still havent figured out where to put the Death Star once I am finished with it. The area I thought it would fit is actually a few inches too small to hold it. I might have to take down the Imperial Shuttle and tear it down. Well, I have time.

Now onto more Death Star building!

SIDE NOTE: When visiting my parents on this road trip, I searched and searched for that last bin of old 80s Lego sets I am missing, and they are GONE. My nephew never took it, my mother could not find the bin. The only explanation is that when she moved about ten years ago or so, the box got lost in the move. So all my M-Tron and Pirate stuff is gone forever. I still have the instructions and some boxes, but the bricks are gone somewhere else. Sad day indeed.

I struggled with this for awhile. i have cats too and the open-ness of this set would be like a magical cat calling monstrosity of valuable minifigs that they would be compelled to play with. For now, I put it on the Detolf where I store my better sets for display. Occasionally, I take some compressed air to it to clean it out.

I have two "hands on" hobbies - LEGO and building Gunpla. LEGO came first, and until I found myself buying a $200+ LEGO set, I never understood the idea behind buying a 1/60 PG model kit...Now it all makes sense. <3

Do all these big sets come with the new brick separator now? It seems like I keep finding them each time I open up a set from my backlog (It's down to ten, I think). Kind of nice because I can just leave one out on the desk but I've never seen them this generous about it.

And I suggest getting an 11-inch lazy susan for your Death Star. It's 100 times better to build and display it on a rotating platform!

I also had a great lil idea to add to the Death Star when I finished it. The mini Sopwith Camel will be about the same size as the mini TIE Advanced. Dock the Sopwith in the Death Star. Say it is a Doctor Who crossover. Sure, those were Spitfires (I think), but an old school prop plane engaged in a space dogfight is cool.

And I am thinking of getting a lazy susan like you did awhile ago, Lamonster. Gotta finish the beast first, and then figure out where to display it.

And both for the same reason: 'LEGO creates building sets for ages 6-11'.

Huh? That is some real bullshit right there and means a lot of these Cuusoo sets will get rejected for that reason.

Edit: Hmm, I wonder if these sets were re-tooled as Technic they would allow them?

This was the only "big" set I was ever bought (I was more a Polly Pocket collector), and it annoyed the hell out of me that my younger cousins always wanted to play with this set when there was (and is) a big tub of LEGO at their disposal. MINE.

I just cant get into the ssd, it looks awesome but I can't handle all that grey. The death star is tempting though, I'd love to get it and put it away for when the kids are older but I know by that time it be worth a lot more unopened.

Its an awesome play set though, I usually avoid those kind if sets.

There are a lot of reasons that a set can get rejected, not least of which the age requirement. The first 2 that were made were both educational/science-y which is in-line with the architecture/space shuttle/etc. sets they've done before.

The sets that have been rejected are ones that would probably take more effort then they're worth to get the license OR they're just not based on appropriate licenses for kids, even if the set is unoffensive. I LOVED the Winchester model, but being based on an R rated movie pretty much guaranteed it's rejection.

The Minecraft set was the perfect storm of a license that is perfectly built for LEGO (it's practically a LEGO game already) and since it's an indie game with a small team it was likely incredibly simple/cheap to get the license. I would be very surprised if the Zelda project gets accepted since Nintendo has already done sets with K'Nex (mario kart) and it would require unique pieces (at least according to the proposal).


I liked the Winchester set so much that I found instructions for making a mini-modular version of it and I built it myself. Sure I didn't get a box or mini-figs, but that doesn't stop it being a great little LEGO set. The greatest part of LEGO is using the pieces to build your own stuff.

I'm not sure if the Minecraft set will be limited to 10,000 or not. Someone from CUUSOO posted on the brickset article and claims more will be made.

Actually, the message Dennis received is inaccurate. We knew the LEGO Minecraft Micro World would be popular, and though we are temporarily sold out at LEGO Direct, more than 10,000 have been made, and we are planning to meet demand on this item throughout the year.

Love a lot of the old Paradisa sets. Some of the buildings were pretty well built, like Poolside Paradise and I always loved the resort like feel it had to it. Wish they used more of those baseplates because the colors are pretty nice. I think I had a huge poster which showcased the sets but I gave it to my cousin's daughter.

Can't wait to build it with her, but I have this feeling that once we're done I'll (we'll? she was eying town hall) want another modular, then another, and my wallet isn't going to be happy.

Aw yeah, Paradisa was such a fun line! The sets were so chill and refreshing. When I was younger, I had a whole tropical resort city set up, kind of like this.....(not mine)

that I unfortunately had displayed near a window that received a lot of direct sunlight. Most of the pieces faded pretty badly. I'd really like to rebuild that collection.

Good news: my parts orders arrived today! Almost 2 weeks, but totally worth it.

(I love how they personalize each interaction with you. In this case, I told the CSR that I was ordering parts to build the retail store, since I couldn't make it to an opening. On the printout that came with the parts, it said, "We know that it is a shame when a favorite set can no longer be built due to lost elements...Or when you don't have enough to complete the LEGO store build!")

Bad news: when building Mini Modular #2 while still in the bag, it ripped completely open, so now they are all built, and on display. I was hoping to build all 5 in the bag, but I stopped after that accident. Oh well, still cool as hell.

Hmm, that's where I was and the Propeller Adventures is the set I was looking at, but still just has the 2 pdfs. It shows it on pg 59 of the 1st pdf.

I noticed the bonus instructions in other sets, so I guess they just don't have one for this one. I sent them an email.

It uses the majority of the pieces but I've had several big sets with a few leftover pieces used for the other builds.

neonglow beat me to it. The Sonic Boom set had quite a few pieces left over after the main build. Some rather big pieces too.

And if anyone is on the fence on that set, get it. A fantastic set for display, but also a great source for MOC pieces.

Death Star Progress Report: Onto box 3 now. This set is so much fun so far. The piecemeal aspect of box 2 was not bad, but so far box 3 is awesome because you are using the entire space to build on. The massive footprint that you have to build off of is so great, and so much larger than any of the modulars or Tower Bridge ever had.
