If the design that Travelers Tales came up with for the LEGO LotR video game is close to what an actual Balrog set might look like, then yes, I'd agree with the "larger yet unique pieces" idea.

Story wise The Betrayal of Isengard it should be Gandalf the White shouldn't it?

The description he put where it includes Mordor Orcs and no Uruk-hai would tell me that it is the scene in FotR where Saruman is telling Gandalf to join him, just before they fight and Saruman sends Gandalf flying up to the top of the tower. I imagine the set could be part of Saruman's study set off the larger central room with the Palantir.

So it would still be Gandalf the Grey.

I'm thinking about getting something big.

Death Star or Super Star Destroyer?

Death Star looks way more fun to build, but I think the Super Star Destroyer looks quite nice, especially the top-bridge section.

What do you guys think?

Death Star will disappear first (it is 4 years old or so now), and is a massive figure diorama. It is also a huge nostalgia bomb when building it, but the playset nature of it turns off some. (BAH! Best set ever!)

SSD is a huge and intimidating display piece, but limited playability. It is one of the largest sets ever once assembled, which adds to its awesomeness. You do have more time to get that one though, as it is only a year old. (This is my next big purchase)

Been lurking here for ages, but finally grabbed my first proper set in ~18 years yesterday. 6869 Quinjet Aerial Battle. Mixing two great loves of mine; Marvel and Lego haha.. Looking forward to building it on the weekend.

Just watched this. Amazing! Must be an absolute buzz to build, as you say.
Quinjet is godlike. Seriously. Awesome build, and awesome figures. It is also one of the most swooshable sets out there. Enjoy it, buddy. I think some others on here will tell you it is awesome too.

NICE!

Well I'm under the impression that I'll eventually end up with both, but it makes sense to go with the Death Star first as you say as it's older...

What happens with older models, are they discontinued forever or do they come back after a while? The regular Star Destroyer and the Falcon also looked fantastic but are 1k+ on ebay now which is a shame.

When they're gone, they're gone for good. LEGO has done reprints on some of its most popular classic sets....beyond those I can think of maybe one or two exceptions.

You're just making me insanely excited about getting home from work and making a start on it, haha! Thanks man, will do.

Next one I really have in my sights is 10227, the B-Wing. Looks like a seriously nice build too.

So I got a neat LEGO game in the mail (In addition to LEGO LotR). Turns out, a second Bionicle game was being made, although it was cancelled! (I dont think Ive posted this here, sorry if I did!)

Have any of you guys tried parting out a whole set through Bricklink+Rebrickable? Seems like you can save a crapload of cash going this route if you don't mind not have the manuals or box but you can PDF the former.

It begins...

I really wish I had the space to bust open all the bags at once but it looks like I'll have to do it through the number system.

BAH! If you are strapped for space, just mix the bags of same number together.

Too much horror digging through giant rubbermaid bins of thousands of pieces looking for one damn piece.

I think thats what I'm going to do for this one,mix one number at a time and sort those with tupperware and see how that goes.

I usually use one tupperware container per bag. That way things are still kind of mixed, but bags are separated. You have to dig some, but it does keep the build more organized than full on mixing. And if there are two bags with the same contents, they get dumped together.

Damn,to late for that. I think sorting by color might be best for now.

NEVER sort by color. NEVER. Not unless you have a hundred or so of one brick in one color (I am looking at you, Tower Bridge!). If you are going to sort, sort by type. It is easier to find a red 1x1 stud in a bin full of other 1x1 studs of varying colors. It is much harder to find a 1x1 red stud inside a sea of red bricks.

Well, after bag 1s, you can just use a container per bag next time.

finishing up the millenium falcon wish list tidy up.

frack you at 70+€ a pop

I am not all to fussed about a lamely printed satellite dish at 40+€

a few other parts ive replaced by cheaper models or colours.
eg
why bother with these in black if they cost less than 10% that in Blay
40345.gif

also the frack
298c05.gif

2+€ o.O
or 5+€ in the desired amount

and why bother with the sans grooves cones, if the grooved ones cost a fraction of that.

still gonna be bloody expensive, but the whole bricklinking and sorting and organising is fun too imho ^^

Bottom two pieces are detail pieces on the outer hull. To the closer the better for appearances. That top piece there is an internal piece and is not visible, so go with whatever.

yea i know those levers are just freaky expensive, and the cones
its either this or this and there is not enough of a difference to justify the price difference.

You're making me want to get back into trying to bricklink the Falcon. I toyed with the idea but never got too far. What I need to do is remove my display models from my "my sets" on rebrickable and then calculate the missing parts.

tempted to do a mod colour wise too.

can you get different combos of colours and dismantle to make those? Eg get a bunch of light gray base with black sticks and remove the sticks and replace with gray ones - or are the gray sticks expensive?

yea something like that, its not on top of my list of priorities, but i know I am NOT paying 2+€ for one of those...
its not an important structural element, just deco ;p

just checked, the pre-Blay gray is much much cheaper.

[edit]
even better
light blay base

0.02€ a pop
and old grey levers.

sadly blay levers seem to be the bottle neck ... :-/

Here's what you need to remember (and consider) when BL'ing a set like the Falcon:

How will it look to you.

Seriously, that's all. If you can't see a reason to buy 100 of a piece that has a near identical counterpart for a fraction of the price, don't do it. Look at a picture of the model and ask yourself what impact the piece has. I'm sure you could figure this out on your own, but the high price of a piece in a SUPER specific color is for the purists/rarity alone. People with well maintained BL stores know EXACTLY what pieces are in high demand for recreating iconic sets, so they all get priced as such.

Just wrapped up the amazing Imperial Shuttle build. I have two white 3 x 1 pieces left over which i find odd, but nothing seems out of place. The real tragedy is that I have no place to display it in my current apartment. So it sits in the bedroom unseen and unloved. Though it's better off than the SSD which is under the bed.

I love Lego but have no room for them and I really want that Death Star....

Wait, the Tie Fighter is $45 regularly in the US? It's $65 up here.

I suppose I should stop being surprised by the Canada tax (but it makes so little sense given proximity).

MSRP is $55. Walmart already had it on sale for $45 and now they have rolled it back further.

Considering our dollar is at par though, it sure does suck that we're stuck having to pay so much more for sets. As far as I know, I can't even get some of the big sets without ordering online or taking a trip to the US.

As far as I can see, I can get the SSD from Walmart in the US, no chance here.

Canada has import duties right? I can understand. I had to pay custom duties on quite a lot of the things that I imported when I was in India.

A very tiny prelim picture for Galaxy Squad. Note that because it is prelim, colors, some design and minifigs could possibly vary.

If my eyes do not deceive me, and the troopers do indeed have orange suits, and assuming they do not change them...

I will have at least one of these sets. Must, even.

Quite liked/would've preferred the dark blue guys from the minifig series.

The baby-blue armour was what put me off the last 'Space' theme.

Actually that may all be one kit (the orange vehicles/squad) - from what I have read other kits will have squaddies with different colors.
