I think that added quite a lot to immersion. Hope they'll make a return to that with the new next gen power. Dragon Age Inquisition seems to be already going for big hub worlds.

It was awesome the first time. After that, i simply use the taxi terminals as much as i can. Shepard can't run outside of combat in ME1 and elevators are too slow, so it kinda takes forever to get from one place to another without taxis when you've already seen that version of the Citadel a lot of times.

I think it wont hurt if they offer both options. Most open world games offer a fast travel system anyway.

The only awesome thing about the Citadel from ME1 is that its huge and its floors are actually linked together, not some levels hiding behind a loading screen. The look of the Citadel itself isn't that interesting. Just sky blue and gray walls everywhere with nearly empty rooms. It didn't look like an interesting place to live in. Give me the Citadel from the last ME3 DLC anyday. Actually, with the new area that the Citadel DLC unlock, i'm sure the ME3 Citadel is bigger than the ME1 one.

I'll have to check that out. I didn't play any of the ME3 dlc yet.

Also, I would like for them to bring back rechargeable weapons from ME1. The ammo thing didn't really work well and was kind of pointless.

I wonder how they are going to carry saves over from last gen consoles to this gen. I was even thinking of switching from PC to PS4 but if save files are kept I will stay PC (Got all the DLC on PC anyways).

I get the feeling you won't be transferring your Mass Effect saves. At the very most you might get the ability to tell the game what ending you chose in ME 3 but that will be it.

The new Citadel zone have your own apartment(which in itself is pretty big for Shepard alone lol, good enough for the party I guess), an arcade building with one minigame or two, a casino with many more minigames and its own dance floor, an arena where you can fight with your ME3 and most of ME2 (plus Wrex) squadmates, and a nice "street" full of npcs that talk about their "multiplayer" experience and flashy neons everywhere between all of these buildings. And that's without the campaign levels.

Also, that DLC has a rechargeable Assault Rifle weapon that use the Avenger model for good old ME1 feels. :p

No bald cap? Lies!
ME3 hinted that the synthesis ending is the "correct" ending for Shepard. There's a cutscene showing The Illusive Man selecting the control ending and Anderson selecting the destroy ending. This strongly hints that the synthesis ending is the one you should choose. Not to mention the whole game has been building up to this, as you have been trying to keep other races fighting, forcing them to compromise. The last selection is the ultimate compromise.

Saying that, the effect every character had on after the synthesis selection looked damn stupid, and it would not work if used in a sequel.

Again it wasn't a serious ending it was a choice for the players, it was the "Perfect" ending but not at all a canon ending. Plus Destroy ending is the only one with the teaser afterward hinting that Shepard might live, but it's all meaningless. Synthesis is space magic. Control is technically possible, but still too far out there and creates far too many plot issues for later titles. Destroy in some variation is the only option.

It would feel a bit like a cop-out not to have the "best" ending to be canon. Destroying all synthetic life (destroy ending) would also be make the ME universe quite a bit duller... Space magic or not, synthesis ending wouldn't look particularly bad in comparison to all the incredible coincidences, plot holes, overly heroic suicides and Shepard being the only human who actually gets stuff done.

edit: But Control ending would maybe be best suited for sequel. Shepard uses the Reapers to fix everything and then leaves the Galaxy, leaving the other synthetic beings behind. And we have nice clean plate for the next game...

I disagree. ME3 MP pretty much nails the balance. The entire Gameplay loop needs to take what was learned from ME3 MP and tweak it for large open maps. It's very important for the high powered weapons (Harrier) to have some shortcoming. This is one of the keys to promoting variety. The Lancer kicks like a mule, but still hits hard and is fairly lightweight. It also has the classic ME1 overheat system and is one of my favorite weapons.

My admiration for what that small MP team accomplished runs deep. A small set of powers and mostly differentiated weapons work so well together. A Turian Soldier with an Adas (stagger master) plays much differently from a Human Soldier with a Falcon (staggers splosiosns.) I can name every ME2/3 weapon. I have no clue what the different ME1 models were. Berserker something, Avalanche something and Lancer?

Just looking at the Wiki is a quick way to see the maturation of Bioware's thought process on that end.

The wait for ME4 MP is starting to dawn on me.

People keep envisioning the First Contact War as this super interesting thing, but there were basically only two major battles (the fall of Shanxshi, and the liberation of Shanxshi).
Not everything have to be about the major battles.
In fact, one might argue that the series is at its best when there's no battle at all.

The Journey of Anderson (as I like to call it) will be about the first contact war and its aftermath. There's like what, 25+ years between that war and the event of Mass Effect. I'm sure they could find something interesting there for Anderson to explore.

Keep the dream alive brothers and sisters.

They're not going to make a ME game with two fights in it. Every game in the series is probably 50% combat by duration.

What I admire most is how the formula, content, and depth of tactics grew from that early pre-launch demo to after the last DLC pack dropped. At first the prospect of multiplayer co-op wave based Mass Effect seemed dumb, but the demo surprised. Then the tactics opened up, and the DLC expanded the formula further. I honestly feel the combat of ME3's multiplayer surpassed any single one encounter or build in the entire single player campaign across all three games.

I feel the same. Left a lasting impression. Did not expect it to be this good. Free DLC was a great deal sweetener.

Of course they won't, but they could. A lot of things happened between then and ME1 that could be turned into something interesting. It doesn't have to be a 3rd person cover based shooter.

There are only a handful of examples from the single player campaigns that I'd even put up for discussion. Even then most of those encounters would be praised in large part because of their cinematic experiences. Something like the last Citadel visit in Mass Effect 1. The variety they achieved with ME3 MP has held my attention more than any other high profile multiplayer game. It's impressive how much the game evolved. Power creep played a part*, but the difference in my own play is vast. That was just a taste of what a small team could do. This is one of the few instances where a sequel could make small refinements or change everything and either would work.

Keeping it mostly the same they could fix all the bugs, revise enemy AI and have a better understanding of map design and whatnot.

Just slightly larger maps:
Weapons can be differentiated even further. Pistols and Sniper Rifles aren't stuck filling similar roles as frequently as they are now.
More elbow room for Vanguards.
Spawns can be a little more natural.
Enemy variety can increase with proper flyers and big units like Colossi.

Even bigger maps?
A-61s, Kodiaks, M-080s, Tomkas, Makos!

Most importantly:
New manifests.

Note there is a lot of overlap between bigger multiplayer maps and addressing single player linearity.
*This flows into multiplayer combat vs single player. There's something to be learned from how certain enemies are trivialized in MP.

God. I'm excited about Mass Effect again.

This is weird. The first Mass Effect is actually my least favorite. Saying that, it is my third favorite game of all time. Then ME2, with ME3 my favorite. Like a crescendo. The series just kept getting better. The more I played, the more I loved the characters. ME3 felt epic throughout. Huge battles. People giving their lives to the fight. In the end, your situation was just so desperate. I was exhausted at the end. I was heartbroken of course, but I understood where you have a battle where trillions died, you're not going to have a happy ending. A memorial was the only fitting end for our Shepard. He/she gave all. The only fitting end for a warrior. Don't you think?

Plot?

Who cares about that? GAF will have issues with it even if it is good.

Shinobi ask about biotic improvements! The best gameplay upgrade from 1 to 2 was the addition of explosions. My body is ready for the next level beyond that.

It's kinda funny how the majority of explosions in ME3 (tech, cryo, fire, bio) ability interactions were barely even explained in the game. It was only after playing a fair bit of multi-player do you understand the depth of all this, and even then I had look at the wiki for a bunch.

They really should explain that stuff better in the game.

am not considering to buy any next gen console at the time, but if Mass Effect 4 is released, i think then the time to buy one has come

only game of which i have specifically bought the soundtrack on CD (and would do so too with ME2 and 3 if they had only release on a CD as it should be)

In fairness, explosions aren't really that important in the single player unless you're playing in the hardest difficulty settings or the arena. The single player is kind of boring to come back to after playing multiplayer.

I always smile when I see this thread back up on page 1. I'm even now still digesting my overall experience with Mass Effect 3, probably the most my opinion of a game has evolved over time. The enjoyment of the campaign after years of waiting, the brick wall of the finale, the stubbornly giving the MP a shot to get my money's worth, the gradual realization that it was the best part of the game, and ultimately, the best gaming experience I had in 2012. The way it was supported with new, free content several times, the horror/excitement/stupid grin of facing the collectors for the first time with my new turian ghost, getting murdered by them by wave 2 as they emerged from the blur of the sandstorm on hazard dagger.

It almost pains me to say it in the face of the initial bitterness from the campaign, but thanks to the multiplayer ME3 is easily one of my favorite games of all time. I couldn't be more excited to see what they do with ME4.

Oh and I've said it before, but put me in for post ME3 sequel; I think the politics, building hostilities, the arms race that would emerge from a destroy ending ME3 world, say 20 years later, would be an unbelievably exciting space to explore. In the wake of the major population centers being ruined, and thousands of reaper husks floating around safe to salvage, a massive power shift would be in the cards, the citadel allied governments trying to rebuild while the terminus takes the chance to try and take over, and who knows what effects the end of the reaper cycle might bring. Some 20 million year old alien army waiting for confirmation of reaper annihilation to re-awake? Pirates repairing dead reapers enough to fly them around and use their weapons? Expansion of Spectre into a larger military force to hold the line (YEEAAAH!!) against encroaching Terminus interests? Something else completely different? I want to find out, the best thing to come out of Mass Effect 3 is a radically altered galaxy to tell stories in, and the best part is, assuming a destroy ending, it doesn't really matter what happened between Shepard and space baby in that room, nobody else in the galaxy knows. To just throw that all away would be a huge cop-out.

Regardless, gimme dat multiplayer 2.0! Bigger maps, more enemies, new objectives, multiple modes, maybe just an endless version of ME3s baseline experience, put it in my veins.

It's good to see all the love for ME3 MP. I worked on the audio for it and I can tell you guys that the MP/Gameplay team worked their goddamn asses off to prove everyone wrong. They were a well oiled machine by the end, and it was because they loved the game so much that they played it non-stop during the entire development. They would routinely work long days and then go home and play MP all night together. It was inspiring to watch and I feel honored to have been a part of it.

In game development there are very occasional rare moments where a small team is so focused and perfectly synchronized that they can see the matrix for a little while, and great things are born. This was one of them.

Adore the series and if I'm honest I was a bit underwhelmed with the multiplayer announcement. Then I tried the demo before release and it clicked with me after the first wave. Was so happy. I still play it from time to time and I hope there is a similar mode for the new Mass Effect.

I was in Edmonton, yes, but I'm not there currently. And no I'm not responsible for the wreave bug, but I can assure you it was painful for the audio team when we found it... :( We fixed it immediately but it took months for the patch to get deployed for various reasons (I think it needed to be in an actual title update). It's funny looking back on it now because it ended up becoming a joke within the MP community :)

Yeah. Next to Team Fortress 2, there's not a multiplayer game of the current soon ending generation, on any platform, that I put more hours into. Awesome, awesome stuff.

New Mass Effect update. Our art team is fucking sick. End transmission.

Sometimes I forget other people like this game too. I appreciated the hell out of it and it kept me engaged the whole time. Unfortunately being a PS3 owner I didn't play one before 2 and 3. I am hyped for next Gen. I am hoping for more of a sandbox feel. Sure you can go anywhere now but I would like to live in the world and do what I want. I want to keep playing after I beat the main story line like Skyrim.

Man, I can't wait to see the game. Mass Effect is possibly my favorite new IP this gen.

Let's just hope the new game will be a sequel, and that those filthy Krogan vermin will be extinct by then. Praise the Genophage!

I know this most definitely not a continuation or sequel to ME3, but what are the chances of getting closure on Shepards story?

I don't get emotionally involved with games but Mass Effect struck a chord with me, I've put 500+ hours into all 3 games combined and I've come to terms with the ending thanks to Extended Cut and Leviathan.

To leave me hanging with the Destruct ending is a massive kick in the balls considering Bioware has said that
Shepard lives and the love interest refuses to believe that Shepard is dead by not placing the name on the memorial and that there is hope that they could be together again

Probably hovering around zero. It's likely there will be no import option so they can have a fresh start with everyone on the same page.
