The Math Magic Thread

Sometimes numbers do neat things, and thought it would be fun to get a thread going for people to share of what they know about this stuff. It doesn't necessarily need to be anything practical, even just stuff that makes a person say, "Huh, look at that..." when they see it. To illustrate what I'm talking about, certain ways that the number 9 does things always struck me as kinda neat.

For instance multiply 9 by any number and the digits in the answer will equal 9 when reduced to a single digit.

Ex. 3x9=27 2+7=9 | 9x9=81 8+1=9 | 9x11=99 9+9=18, 1+8=9 | 9x43678=393102, 3+9+3+1+0+2=18, 1+8=9

Another would be constantly dividing the degrees in a circle, and the digits equaling 9.

Ex. 360 = 3+6+0=9, 180 = 1+8+0=9, 90 = 9+0=9, 45 = 4+5=9, 22.5 = 2+2+5=9, 11.25 = 1+1+2+5=9, etc.

Lastly, 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9=45 , 4+5=9

Anyway, it's nothing world changing, but it's a fun way to play with numbers. Does anyone else have some nifty things that can be done with numbers to share? I'd definitely be interested in finding more things like this. =)

Probably related to your example: casting out nines. I wasn't taught this as a child, so it blew my mind somewhat when I encountered it as an adult.

You can check several operations with it, but here's using it with division:
