What is Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge: Special Edition?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_Island_2#Special_Edition

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge is an adventure game developed and published by LucasArts in 1991. It was the second game of the Monkey Island series, following The Secret of Monkey Island, and the sixth LucasArts game to use the SCUMM engine. It was the first game to use the iMUSE sound system.

The game's story centers on the wannabe pirate Guybrush Threepwood. After defeating ghost pirate LeChuck in The Secret of Monkey Island, little is known of what happened between Guybrush Threepwood and Elaine Marley. The sequel involves Guybrush's attempts to both find the mysterious treasure, Big Whoop, and win back Elaine's love.

The development team for the game was largely the same as for the first game in the series. The project was led by Ron Gilbert, and he was once more joined by Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. LeChuck's Revenge is considered by critics to be among the best of LucasArts' adventure games

The special edition will include updated graphics, a new musical score, new voice-overs, an art gallery, and an in-game hint system. Players can opt to switch from the updated version into the older, pixelated graphics and music of the original game at any time, though an option allows players to retain the updated music and voice-overs of the remake. Players can opt to use the original point-and-click control scheme, or can directly control the movements of Guybrush using a control pad or similar device.

The remake was announced by LucasArts during their annual Game Developers Conference on March 10, 2010, with the previous creators of the adventures, Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman, in attendance.[18] The trio of game designers have recorded a commentary track for the Special Edition that can be brought up at any time, using silhouettes in the fashion of Mystery Science Theater 3000 overlayed on the graphics.

Craig Derrick announced in an interview information on a new interface that was in the vein of The Curse of Monkey Island's and a return of the original voice cast, including Dominic Armato as Guybrush, Alexandra Boyd as Elaine, Earl Boen as LeChuck, and even Neil Ross as Wally. Phil LaMarr was also confirmed as Dread.

Poor Gibberish Driftwood is stuck in Monkey Island 2 Special Edition's classic mode in the E3 trailer for LucasArts' adventure game revamp but luckily the LucasArts Games Hint Line is on hand to explain how to switch to the snazzy redrawn graphics mode.

Meanwhile, a batch of screenshots show more comparisons between original and revamped graphics--which can be switched between with a single button press, as Gorbush learned--plus a peek at its fancy bonus "Art of Monkey Island" gallery. Other bonuses include an audio commentary track by series star developers Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman.

The trailer reveals that Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge will be released on July 7, hitting PC, Mac, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Steam Pre-Order Bonus:

Pre-ordering Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge on Steam nets you The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition for free, LucasArts has announced.

Left, Monkey Island 2 SE. Right, The Secret of Monkey Island SE.

Both games are revamps of their respective beloved adventure game originals, featuring full voice acting, remastered scores and redrawn graphics--and plus option to switch back to the old style. MI2: SE, however, also features a creator audio commentary track and the ability to mix and match the new voices with the old art style.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I might get this game. :D

Anyway, is the PSN version coming out July 7 or July 6? US PSN updates on a Tuesday.

I would agree if it still looked like 1`s special edition. This looks much better actually.

Already pre-ordered on Steam. I've been playing ME2 since the Amiga days, which had 11 disks! can't wait to relive those memories all over again :D

One of the best-looking games of all time. The original that is.

Pre-ordered the SE mostly for the commentary. :lol

(The new graphics don't look bad either, though.)

My God I got pumped for this because of the E3 trailer but then I knew my expectations were too high, that trailer looked too amazing to be in-game...

Still getting this though purely for nostalgia and direct analog control.

I just beat Tales of Monkey Island recently. What a wonderful addition to the franchise.

My favorite Monkey Island is CMI, but Lechuck's Revenge is right up there.

I still need to preorder this. Damn you Steam sales!

Tell me about it between the Steam Sales and ordering Dragon Quest IV, I don't really feel I have time for this one at the moment.

This game is even better than the first. Can't wait.

This time I won't be scared by it like I was when I was a kid :lol

I need a save for the first remake. I was on Monkey Island. I think chapter 4?

Will this be an issue with the steam version? I think I had a problem before.

Thank you.

Just PM me please and I will PM my email.

I really want to pre-purchase this on Steam (The Secret of Monkey Island as an bonus is pretty sweet) but all I got is a Mac, and there's no Mac support on Steam for some reason. Is it a bad idea to purchase it via Steam anyway and hope for added Mac support in the future?

I actually only just started playing The Secret of Monkey Island yesterday, which I got through preordering this one so yeah I am looking forward to this as I'm enjoying the first one quite a bit. :D

For as far as I know, there won't be a Mac version of this game.
Haven't seen anything that could point to a mac release, even if Shacknews says so.

Watch the Steam version eventually be cross platform.

This remake is just beautiful, I wouldn't mind buying a completely new Monkey Island game in the same vein.

I don't like the Telltale 3D looks at all ;(

I know what you mean, but their engine has matured pretty significantly in the last few iterations. Check out the new Sam & Max season if you haven't, it's got some significant graphical and gameplay improvements over other Telltale games.

I hope this game scales properly and doesn't have black bars even in 16:9 resolutions like first remake had.

Monkey Island 2 era adventure games really don't need remakes if they already have voice. ;)

Just in case someone doesn't know this yet: If you preorder MI2 on Steam and already own MI1 you can gift the spare MI1 to someone else.

No way! MI2 is a fine place to start the series. New locales, characters that are well established and explained within the plot and a scenario that only leans on the first in so far as it uses its bareboned skeleton to establish itself early on.

Secret is also easier for starters, though (MI2 Easy Mode is for wusses  ). Well, if anybody does start with LeChuck's Revenge, look for the shovel :lol

MI2 was the first MI game I owned... And I was fine understanding everything. The plot's very self-contained. You miss some of the in-jokes.. But it's just as fun to understand them later on.

Two more days. Bought the first one when it released on XBLA but never got round to completing it. Went back to it a couple of weeks a go and thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next instalment.

And the Worms 2 DLC is out tomorrow too.
