The Netflix Recommendation Thread of Dope Movies

Any recommendations on where to start for anime on Netflix? As in, for someone that's never watched any.. I started watching Highschool of the Dead and it's really interesting until it zooms in on a crotch shot or it goes into slow motion on the girls' boobs flopping everywhere. I know anime is known for this, and I don't have a problem with mature content, but wondering if there are interesting anime out there that I can get started with to ease me into this
seemingly strange
culture.

Fullmetal Alchemist (Brotherhood) is easily digestible and very enjoyable and has very little focus on boobs and crotch shots. You may choose which series you want to watch, the normal Fullmetal Alchemist is for the first half based on the manga and continued on its own path from there, and Brotherhood really rushes in the first fifteen or so episodes covering the same part and follows the manga entirely.

For what is more enjoyable? I prefer Brotherhood, but the earlier one is good too. Note that Brotherhood only has the first three seasons only on Netflix. The rest is watchable for free on Hulu if you want.

The Last Exile is fairly mature and also has non of these fan service shots. It has a highly annoying voice in the dub though.

FLCL is very short (six episodes) and is very, very weird but extremely well received. You might want to try it, lots of sex references but that is the theme of the show.

My favorite animé is probably Gurran Lagann, if you want your large scale robo fights and easy humor. It has a lot of those but and tit shots, but it's probably by far not as bad as Highschool of the Dead.

Samurai Champoloo is soon coming back on Netflix, and when it is, DEFINITELY WATCH IT!

Also, the Ghost in the Shell series is very good and is very "normal". However, it is only on Netflix until 1 August. It may come back though.

And that's the stuff I can think of now. I'd recommend Monster, the most "normal" anime I'd have ever seen, but it is removed from Netflix and free to be seen on Hulu.

Great, I'll be starting with this list. Fullmetal Alchemist is one that I'd heard of, as well as Ghost in the Shell. Maybe I'll start with Ghost in the Shell since it's about to leave the service, see as much as I can before it goes.

Thanks again.

Gurren Lagann is one ofthe most fun tv shows ever, it's an antidote to boredom and sadness. Even the booby fanservice is hilarious and endearing.

There is a lot of Ghost in the Shell stuff on Netflix.

What you want is Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society, which is the series. Two items on Netflix are shortened versions of story elements in the series, and are crap. Ghost in the Shell 2.0 is a remaster of the Ghost in the Shell movie, with new music, art and crappy cg, you most likely don't want to see it.

And you have the original Ghost in the Shell, which is the movie. It looks and sounds very good, but opinions on it are pretty polarizing story-wise. I believe it is seen as a classic though It might be worth a try, it is also relatively short (although it may not feel like it). Lots of boobs, but they are pretty much ignored by everybody in the series.

Trigun and Samurai Champloo when it gets returns. Start with those.

I used to like anime back in the day, but now most of it (that I've seen) is almost unwatchable.

I was in a similar position that you're in; only really started watching anime when I first got a Netflix subscription last year, and I'm not into the creepy fixation on girls like that. That being said, ima go ahead and third the Samurai Champloo sentiments whenever it comes back as it's incredible and should be considered required anime viewing

I was gonna say Death Note but apparently it's not on Netflix right now. Definitely one to keep in mind though

Baccano! is pretty good so long as you can adjust to the nonlinear story

Mushi-shi's fantastic just for the creepy vibes and bittersweet storytelling

I probably have a few more but all of this plus the stuff others already recommended you should keep you going for a while

Maybe the creepy fixation on girls gets easier to deal with, but just jumping into an episode of Highschool of the Dead and seeing an upskirt view along with her smashing her boobs together when she hit the wall, all within the first couple minutes was a little offputting. The actual zombie stuff is great, and I don't mind big tits in my shows.. At all, but when it slows down and they jiggle like a DOA game, I just feel like a perv for watching it. I'll definitely come back to that show though.

Thanks to you and everyone else for the tips, I'm enjoying watching new things thus far. Ghost in the Shell is really cool.

PARIS -- Netflix has acquired gritty Gallic crime drama "Spiral," its first pickup of a non-English drama series.

Produced by Paris-based Son et Lumiere and repped by Newen Distribution, "Spiral" bowed on Canal Plus in 2005 and has been a ratings hit. Season four will bow in September on the paybox.

Praised for its character development and compelling narrative, the gritty police drama centers on the tumultuous day-to-day life of a tough, yet flawed femme captain and her two lieutenants, as well as judge, a prosecutor and a lawyer. Show follows the characters as they investigate murder cases and unveil corruption at the highest levels of the judicial system.

The Netflix deal, which is non-exclusive, covers all four seasons. The show will be run in French with English subtitles.

"In financial terms, the deal may not be as profitable as a sale to a network, but it opens great perspectives for French-language drama series," said Newen topper Laetitia Recayte.

BBC Worldwide Prods. has acquired "Spiral's" U.S. remake rights, with Sam Mendes' Neal Street Prods. on board to develop and Meredith Stiehm ("Cold Case") tapped to pen.

On top of being a local ratings success, "Spiral" has been licensed to 72 foreign networks, including free-to-air channels and pay TV nets.

It's one of the rare Gallic drama skeins to air in English-speaking countries -- in the U.K. on BBC4 and in Australia on SBS2.

Known as "Engrenages" in France, the show was created by Alexandra Clert and Guy Patrick Sainderichin.

Has anyone seen Boy Wonder? It sounds interesting...like an indie film inspired by Batman origin story. Nevermind...bad acting in this one. Reviews and trailer made it seem like it could be decent.

Any recommendations on where to start for anime on Netflix?

Gankutsuou The Count of Monte Cristo (Gorgeous visuals and inspired by the Dumas book)
Macross Plus (Still holds up well and Sharon Apple is still one of my favorite soundtracks)
Samurai Champloo (Recently re-added. This one is just great all around. Love the hip-hop influence)
Afro Samurai (don't laugh...I enjoyed the visuals and fights... lol)
Full Metal Alchemist (the original. Brotherhood is incomplete)
Naruto (:P)

I didn't realize a lot of the anime that used to be available is gone now. :( Potato chip scene is enough in itself to watch Deathnote. LOL

Might be wrong, but FMA: Brohood on the 'flix isn't the entire show, think it's missing at least 15 episodes. As I said might be wrong.

Yep its missing the last 1/3 of the series. The original FMA is complete though. Both are recommended!

Has anyone seen "The Perfect Host?" It sounds really interesting and I plan on watching it with the girl tonight. Just curious if it is worth it or not.

I'll check these out too, in time haha.

I actually watched another couple episodes of Highschool of the Dead, and I'm in episode 3. It's actually really good if you can ignore the horrible fan service. I think this is the one that someone took the gif of a girl's boobs doing a scissor thing and dodging a bullet and put it all over GAF for a while. Wouldn't surprise me. But the zombie action and visuals are pretty great.

So, I finally watched Breaking Bad. Awesome! I attempted many times previously, but couldn't get into. This time though, I sat my ass down and actually paid attention.

So, now I might just re-watch it because I can't find anything to put on anymore and I have free time, live alone, and right now, it's quiet, too quiet. Hehe.

I have seen:

24 (my favorite show)
Heroes (I don't think I have seen the last season though... I think anyway.)
Breaking Bad
Friday Night Lights

Anyone able to offer something? Suggestions?

I have started Mad Men... Does it ever get good? Does it ever get engaging? Does it ever get... anything? Because so far, it sucks. I can't get through the first episode without losing it.

I've seen the first season of Lost and random episodes on TV here and there. Never could get into it after season 1.

Never enjoyed those Scifi shows like Battlestar Galactica. They always seemed so cheesy, same with Dollhouse.

I like shows that continue from one episode to the next, like a nice long movie where you always want to know what's going to happen next.

Tempted to give Gossip Girl a shot. It's gotta be popular for a reason and Blake Lively is not hard to look at.

Anyway, as quid pro quo for anybody who can offer something:

If you like hidden Indie gems on Netflix like me, this is awesome right here:

Prison Break. If you haven't seen it yet this definitely should be next on your list. Great first season, and second season too really. You'll breeze through this in no time because you'll want to keep seeing what happens next. I just wish the series ended before the last minute of season two. Didn't like seasons 3-4.

Other possibilities: The Black Donnellys, Terriers, Sons of Anarchy, Luther. These are four great shows that I also really liked. Sadly, the first two only had one season, but the Black Donnellys is especially awesome if you liked Breaking Bad (actually, because of that I might suggest this be your next watch). Luther too:)

I recommend Luther and Sherlock if you haven't seen those yet.

I watched the first season of Mad Men, and it's just a very, very slow burn. I definitely respect the show and think it has some great performances and stories, but it's probably just too slow for me. Maybe one day I'll pick it up again.

The Walking Dead

Gossip Girl really isn't that good tbh. If you want a CW show check out Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries instead.

Never said they were great and I have no intention of ever watching either of those shows again. Heck, I can't even get started on the last Heroes Season. Last time I watched even a few minutes of BSG, it came across as low budget B-rated. However, I do not enjoy the Scifi shows, period. The only one I can think of that I enjoyed when it was on TV was X-Files. Even then, it never really caught me as a devoted viewer.

Thanks for the Suggestions everyone. Think I might check out Sherlock. It keeps getting recommended and keep seeing posts about how good it is.

Yeah, forgot I have seen Damages. I suggest everyone see it, so good:

did anyone get an email detailing about some class action lawsuit vs netflix today??
I got one. Not sure how to act on it.

Yep. Sounded like a load of money-grabbing bullshit to me, how do I get my name off it?

thats what I wanna know too. I clicked that link provided for more info however Im confused on how to get my name off of this settlement. help me netflix-gaf!

Assuming we are all talking about the same class action:

How can I request exclusion?
Answer:

You can “exclude” yourself from the Settlement Class by following the steps set forth below. If you choose to exclude yourself from the Settlement Class, you may pursue whatever legal rights you have in any separate proceeding if you choose to do so, but you will have to do so at your own expense.

To exclude yourself from the Settlement Class, you must send a letter saying that you want to be “excluded” from the Class in In re Netflix Privacy Litigation, No. 5:11-cv-00379-EJD. Your exclusion request must include your name, address, telephone number, signature, and a signed statement to the effect that: “I/We hereby request to be excluded from the proposed Settlement Class in In re Netflix Privacy Litigation.” Your exclusion request must be postmarked no later than November 14, 2012, and sent to the Settlement Administrator at the following address:

Netflix Privacy Settlement Administrator; PO Box 2750; Faribault, MN 55021-9750

A request for exclusion that does not include all of the above information, that is sent to an address other than the one listed above, or that is not received on time, will not be valid and the person asking to be excluded will be bound as class member(s) by the Settlement.

If you elect to opt-out of the Settlement, you will (i) not have any rights as a member of the Settlement Class pursuant to the Settlement, (ii) not be bound by any further orders or judgments in this case, and (iii) remain able to file your own lawsuit at your own expense.
If you do not opt-out, you will be bound by further orders and judgments in the case and, if the Settlement is approved, your claims (as defined in the Settlement Agreement) will be released and you will not be able to sue Netflix for any claim relating to the lawsuit.

Assuming we are all talking about the same class action:

Fucking hell. This is why I hate class action lawsuits. The only goal they accomplish is to make lawyers rich.

• Pay attorneys’ fees of up to 25% or $2.25 million of the Settlement Fund, plus up to $25,000 in expenses.
• Pay a total incentive award of $30,000 to the Named Plaintiffs

Dammit. That's 9 million less for Netflix to spend on new movies to stream. I couldn't care less what Netflix does with my viewing history.

My computer (Gaming machine, and work machine. Heavy duty machine..)

Restarts when watching netflix fullscreen, or even windowed..

whats up?

When is the last time you updated the drivers? I had a problem with netflix and some resized videos on youtube locking up my pc an update or two ago.

Im thinking of starting a new show and I see people have good things to say about Terriers, but i know it got canned after one season, does the show end on a cliffhanger or do they wrap things up?

Just started watching Nikita, and im really surprised how good it is!

Has netflix streaming on 360 been screwed up for anyone? A movie will load then start buffering and freeze up until I get a error code. It does it on anything I try to stream in 360.. HBO go works fine on 360 and Netflix on PS3 has no problems. Anyone else getting this?

Just watched The Man From Earth for a second time and can't recommend it enough. If you haven't seen it and like dialogue driven movies, you really owe it to yourself to check it out.

netflix said:
Renowned sci-fi writer Jerome Bixby penned the script for this thought-provoking film starring David Lee Smith as John Oldman, a college professor who reveals to his colleagues that he's actually a centuries-old caveman. And so begins a captivating philosophical meditation on immortality, the last work from screenwriter Bixby, who earned career accolades for his contributions to such genre-defining shows as "Star Trek" and "The Twilight Zone."

I started watching this... seems pretty interesting, but the music is horrid. It's distractingly bad. And I'm not someone who usually pays attention to the score.

I tried getting into it, but the comedy feels a little dry as in The Office and that's really not my type of comedy.

I watched about 20 mins or so, maybe a little more.

Goldblum and Ford, sure, but when are they not doing dry comedy. Otherwise, I never got that impression. It's definitely not an Adam Sandler comedy.

I just watched this again, I love this movie! Not sure I should be embarrassed or not, but I love it.

Wow just finished Blood and Bone. Such great movie, everyone watch it if you haven't seen it.

Watched this last night. I was very surprised, messaged my roommate right after and told him he should check it out too.

It doesn't end in a cliffhanger, but once it's over, you'll be sad knowing there are no more episodes.
