The Netflix Recommendation Thread of Dope Movies

I watched William Shatner's The Captains documentary last night, a doc about all the actors who have played Star Trek captains. It was really enjoyable. A little dick-sucky maybe, but if you grew up on Trek like I did you may find it enjoyable. Avery Brooks is at once artful and inspiring but also confusing and insane. I'm not sure if what he's saying is really profound, or if it is in fact nonsense. Worth a watch for that if nothing else!

30 for 30: The Two Escobars is the best of the series. It's one of the best damn documentaries I've ever seen.

You dont have to be a sports fan or a soccer fan to enjoy this doc. I hate soccer and this was still one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.

Thanks for this. I added a few others as well.

Now streaming on netflix. WOOT!

Fishing With John

watch it.

I've had it on DVD for 12 years so don't need it on Netflix, but I second the recommendation. It's so ridiculous yet relaxing at the same time.

Dat narration.

"Lon's legs are wooden...but his feet are real"

I've been watching the 30 for 30 series. Catching Hell, the Steve Bartman documentary, was great. I just finished Without Bias, and that was really sad. I can't wait to watch more of them.

There any rhyme or reason why stuff like Captain American and Trasformers get cropped to 1:78 from 2:35:1?

Just depend on the studio? I noticed they're only 720p too.

I just saw Meet Bill

I can't recommend this movie enough. It's a hilarious, lighthearted, feel-good movie about a man whose life is falling apart and the journey of self discovery that he goes on. The acting is superb, especially from the inimitable Aaron Eckhart, and it reminds me a lot of his other movie Thank You For Smoking. Watch it!

Also, another movie I watched a while back which I really like:

Zachary Levi plays a half white, half Pakistani guy who is dating a white girl, but his Pakistani father disapproves of it. I don't want to give too much away, but it's another good self discovery movie that has both heart and comedy.

The people who bitch the most about black bars in movies are usually the ones who watch the big, dumb & shallow blockbusters movies. I guess Netflix thought it would be a good idea to zoom in the films for the audience.

I really hate widescreen, i always hear how the picture gets cut off but i dont notice anything different with blackbars, i payed for a 50 inch tv, i want the picture to fit the whole screen.

15 minutes in and already enjoying it. Thanks!

It's because the copies on Netflix come straight from Epix, which cuts the ratios down to fit 16:9 TVs and is only a 720p station.

I own Captain America, but since it was brought up, I wanted to ask/mention/comment:

I did not like this movie. At all. I thought it sucked. I thought it was not interesting at all. I thought X-Men 3 was better, I kid not.

Do I need to re-watch this for a second time? I've only watched it once. It's cheaper to buy the Blu-ray + iTunes Digital Copy version on release day then it is to go to the movies and it was a Marvel movie that I had heard was good and due to the track record figured I couldn't lose. I kind of feel gipped.

It was a pile of shit... I didn't even finish it. Just like Thor I turned it off somewhere before the end.

Just finished "The Man From Nowhere" and holy shit... that was a fantastic movie!! Other great action/martial arts recommendations?? I've seen all Ip Man and Ong Bak titles.

I watched this last night because of your recommendation and really enjoyed it. The main character really looked like Keanu Reeves towards the end.

Just noticed now a very enjoyable (IMO) movie on streaming ..

It's about a kooky guy (Michael Douglas) who is convinced there is buried treasure somewhere near his house in California. As he goes on his life long search for the treasure, his estranged daughter attempts to rekindle a relationship with him. Not the peak of cinema but its a cute, clever movie and I highly recommend it.

i loved Meet Bill so ill give the other movie a try. Thanks :)

Watched the doc Shut Up, Little Man! last night. Starts out promising, but kind of fizzles out at the end. Still a good watch, though.

Ewww...I hate hate cropped widescreen. I hate even worse when it's forced. Original aspect at least let people zoom in if they hate "black bars". The type of image loss is ridiculous when you go 2:40:1 to 16:9, losing like 30% of the entire frame for an entire film.

When I found out my classic Jackie Chan movies blu-rays containing Project A and the like were all cropped out, I was pissed. I pretty much went "Go fuck yourself, Miramax". I don't want to pay to get less movie. At least with Netflix it's a subscription thing and not like I'm owning it.

Two good movies that I recently saw have been added to the Netflix library:

I haven't watched them since they first came out, but I remember them both being really good.

Captain America: The First Avenger is the worst film out of all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It goes without saying, but Margin Call is amazing. My favorite movie of 2011.

Just watched it based on your recommendation. It hit pretty close to home considering I was an investment banker for two years and survived a round of layoffs due to this whole financial crisis. However, if you know a little about finance and how the crisis in 2008 played out, you can see some holes in the events that this movie portrayed, although I imagine it was done for dramatic reasons. Good movie overall though, thanks for the recommendation.

If you're interested in this topic I would actually suggest reading Too Big To Fail. It was made into an HBO movie as well, so maybe you can check that out.

Errr definitely debatable when you have...Hulk (2003), Ghost Rider(s), Wolverine, Daredevil/Elektra, Punisher(s), Fantasic Four(s), Spiderman 3 amongst that bunch.

He said Marvel Cinematic Universe. Which is comprised of Hulk (2008), the Iron Man movies, Captain America, Thor, and The Avengers. Those movies you listed aren't in the MCU.

The first 1/3-1/2 of the film is the best section of any of the MCU films. Then Joe Johnston's directing kicks in and it goes to absolute shit once he breaks the prisoners out.

There's a special label for that set of movies? Alrighty then I guess I stand corrected. I don't think its any worse than Hulk or Thor though...

I did like the beginning... but it goes downhill pretty fast. As soon as he's wearing a costume the movie immediately tanked imo.

Thor had some really great scenes. Pretty much everything on Earth was enjoyable... everything everywhere else sucked though. And the movie got retarded near the end. Overall, imo... it was better than CA. Had more high points.

edit: I actually enjoyed a lot of Hulk. Again... mostly the beginning.
