DarthWoo - What's with all the hangings? What did these elven women do to you?

Here's a sketch of Ico I'm working on (cropped, obviously). I'm working my way up to an all-out painting of Ico with Yorda, but I have to sketch him a bunch of times first. It was hard to get him looking like Ico! There's very little reference to go from, so I drew a bunch of Tibetan kids for a day before starting to sketch Ico. How's the likeness?

Ah, you're right! They should be wider and angle outward. I'd love to use the cover for reference, but the cover art is SO BAD! It looks nothing like the character!

Yeah, probably my best bet...I have the game, but I'm gonna need a cut scene. Man, Ico's in that awkward, gangly puberty stage in the game...I can't seem to place him there. That sketch makes him look like a child. I'd maul the paper with my teeth, but it's all digital :p

Wait, this works! I was looking at it again...His horns aren't as developed and neither is he! It's a younger Ico! I'm so lame. I'll be sketching him another couple times anyway :p Well, thanks Jim.

I just started a new project and i need some opinions on the first picture. The series is about codependence. The final project will have two sets of pics, one focused on a female character and one focused on a male. Here is the first shot of the female side.

whic do you think is more appealing, the vertical or the horizontal shot?

The limited space adds to the walled in feeling from the set up in the photo. Almost like the two vertical edges are closing in(pushing up the sofa and the right wall), yet, the person is laying calmly in the center.

Visually, definitely more exciting.

That smaller half body shot you posted is ok. Not bad infact. A little lacking in detail, but with a good rough outline.

The full body shot is confusing and quite frightening. Crappy sword, gay stance... short stumpy legs.

You a photoshop kid. Go stretch out his legs and redraw the arm yourself.

The sword is just a placeholder.
The stance was inspired by some African art I saw. It was a naked African man standing supported by his long staff. Didn't look fruity there, but I must have done something wrong.

Well, I can imagine such a pose looking half way decent.

But of course you changed the staff into a sword; he's no longer gripping the staff logically... but gripping a short sword prudishly.

Plus, the proportion of the legs plus the design of the leg is very effeminate... as well as the feet pointing inwards.

I'd imagine properly drawn the pose can evoke feelings of the guy been a sentinel of somesort. In this form... just not working.

it's still a little fruity, but I think that's mainly due to the pyjama feet design, the hand on hip and the stance that places the legs close together. Also the hips were sticking out quite prominently originally. I tried to hide that a bit, making his pecs larger. maybe it worked.

But at least it doesn't immediately cause you to go: huh? wtf?

Here's my first new sketch for a while that doesn't involve some sort of asphyxiation :)

It is my rendition of a frogman guard, a mob from the MUD I used to play. A relatively weak mob, it was a frequent target of low-mid level characters.

I needed to get a whole sketch down before I start my next planned series. It will start with my main character bloodied and fleeing from a rampaging frogman, after having decided to pick a fight while still a bit too young. The next will see her evenly matched and in a fierce battle, with a little more experience and armor on her. Finally, she'll be quite a bit older, decapitating one with one stroke, with numerous other frogman corpses roasting all about in a burning village.

Edit: By the way, Manabanana, have you been checking your PMs?

I felt it was time I contributed to one of these topics, not that I'm as good as you guys.

I apologize for the size of the pics at the moment. I'm scrambling to get Photoshop so I can resize these to around 65% of their orignal size and my scanner is on the fritz...so these are all 1.5-2 year old pics, I wish I could scan new stuff to show my improvement, but alas, such is my luck....although, if anyone wants to take a crack at resizing them before I free up time between the gym, school, and work....

Unfinished pic - it's supposed to have lots of energy going everywhere, crazily in fact, with the villain's energy wrapped around the hero's - whose energy is no less animated and eratic. Since they're brothers lunging at each other's throats, I wanted there to be lots of crackling. I'm afraid to touch the pic now since I've changed so much in my ways, it'd be hard to finish the picture now.

Earlier timeframe of sketch pages. She'd look a bit tougher, or physical if I did her now rather than the "rough" look she has here. She'd have that "elegant beauty-assassin who doesn't speak much but would kill you six different ways before you blink" look. Lips always pursed and such. Oh God, the mistakes on this picture....

I really wish I could scan newer stuff. It's kinda pointless to get criticism on old artwork when you've already changed things, you know? I'd rather get criticism on what I'm doing now...Sorry to those participating in this topic.

Yeah, basically all those Image guys when they broke off from Marvel. I'm trying to see if I can change things up a bit, but I dunno if I have the time to retrain myself.

To Leguna: That CG work continues to impress, man. God, I wish I could do that. And that scene (storyboard I believe?) is outrageous, your friend is GOOD. I'm trying to get my comfort level with backgrounds and cinematics (angles, lighting and shadow) to be just like that....

Jiggle: HOW? HOW????!! I know, it's a generic and assinine question, but I'm dumbfounded by your coloring skills. It's something I've been wanting (if not needing) to learn for my own art. So, I've been just a little awestruck.

And so many more people to cover (Blacklion, sporks' photography - I love the atmosphere, especially the "sneaking" one of your g/f, etc..)

Where's @$$monkey been? I miss seeing his cartoon world grow new characters and everything...

It seems that posting my last two drawings here garnered them more pageviews than any of my other drawings had gathered over there, moreso the bondage one than the elf pic. Not a single comment for either on the site though :(

The thing is that I hadn't really drawn anything new in over a year, and even before that I maybe drew one thing every couple months. Now, in the last month, I've done several dozen pieces.

It was supposed to have a cel-shaded look, but oh well.

Mostly quick sketches I do when I'm bored, which are then colored in Photoshop...

There's a lot of nice looking images in this thread!
Mana & Jiggle : awesome coloring :)
Sp0rsk : some of the compositions are really clever
Future Trunks : there's a lot of raw energy... really good

Darthwoo : a suggestion for the last piece... maybe you could do better shadowing than a "ghosting" of the silhouette. It would help to better situate the character in space. Moreover, you can get a greater sense of volume while still retaining a cel-shaded look... perhaps you could try to do more zones than a simple "shadow" and "light"?

I had spent 5 hours experimenting with using the pen tool to etch out the areas that I wanted shaded (so that I didn't have really jagged edges), and started to get pissed off at the drawing, so that's why I stopped where I did.

I spent about 10 min. on this. I defined a light source and used UNsaturated colors.

The line art is really solid, don't let the colors bring it down. You should really consider painting this.
