The new Sony Xperia 1 III is the Official Smartphone of the COD Mobile Championship 2021

Sony market share is less than 1%, I would be surprised if Sony was still in the mobile business in few years time. The end is coming... like LG
Highly unlikely IMO, because their flagship phones are a showcase for their mobile technologies - like camera sensors - that get bought by Apple, etc. You only need look at the timeline when Sony's new phones show off a feature - like the 120hz 4k HDR OLED in the Xperia 1 III above for CoD - and then see when Apple adopt that feature.

The Xperia XZ Premium was a good example with the Super Slow motion camera - although Sony hamstring their offering in software by limiting the capture duration, that gave their competitors an angle to sell their phones with Sony's sensor with the feature 9-12month later, which is probably no coincidence.

Without flagship handsets to prove and iron out issues for cutting edge tech, I doubt Sony would be able to sell their tech so easy.

I've been using Xperia since I first got a smart phone. Currently using the xz1 compact. It's 3 years old and I think it launch 2017. Still works a dream. I might get this new one on a black Friday deal.
I've had a Sony (SE) smartphone since the p800/p900 (when only SE and nokia did smartphones) and currently have an Xperia 1 which is great enough, and an XZ Premium in the cupboard as a backup which I preferred with LCD and 16:9 aspect. I'm due an upgrade soon, so will see about getting the new Xperia 1 III. It gets harder and harder to get enthused by upgrades with candybar phones, they are so dull without an official case purchase IMO.

I would kill for a modern P900 or P1i, or even a modern Xperia Play design using all the current tech, or something revolutionary.

The main issue is that Sony tried to sell themselves as a premium brand over the years when they never had the image for that, it's not like Apple who are known for being the forefront of high end mobile hardware and marketing. Sony was more akin to a Toyota and Honda, affordable and reliable.

I think that's the mistake they made, honestly, the opposite. Focusing too much on being affordable. Smartphone market seems to prefer getting ripped off with high prices to be viewed as premium, and Sony definitely is a much more premium hardware company than Apple which is mainly outsourcing much more than it's making.

They actually make the most expensive smartphone, but for professionals not the regular, fake "Pro" label that most companies run around with.

I'm the biggest Sony fan here, but I swear to god their mobile division is run by some low IQ chimpanzee!

Their Xperia phones are fantastic but it seems like Sony forgets to make logistics and distribution plan for them. They make them available in some regions then wait a year to make it available in the others! Also they had this stupid Strategy of having TWO flagships a year! Like WTF... give yourselves and your product some space..and make it available EVERYWHERE at the same time!

They're not making enough of them, and that's one major problem they need to iron if they wanna regrow their mobile brand.

Ironic. CoD sells well. Sony phones don't sell.

That's the idea, use a successful game to regain more market share.

This new Sony handheld is pretty sweet. Is it backwards compatible with PSP/Vita?

Definitely more powerful than the Switch.

You're saying it in a sarcastic way, but I think they'll port those PSP/Vita with their new PS Mobile division to iOS and Android.

Yup, that's another thing that keeps them around.

I upgraded to an Xperia 5ii last year and that had COD mobile pre-installed..
Still haven't really played it though what I have seen of it certainly looked and moved well enough. The 5ii is a great little handset.
Anyone on the fence about grabbing one of these new Sony handsets should certainly give them as much consideration as the Google and Samsung offerings.

Was willing to get that exact cellphone but buying a new phone is now on hold for me. I prefer the 5 size over 1.

Smartphone market on US might be one thing, but as far as I know there's still a sizeable share of lower cost models there, for the rest of the world, price matters a lot more and that's something that Sony was failing with most stuff. They recently ceased TV and stuff manufacturing operations in Brazil and everyone here says that they were overpriced.

I like Sony but I don't trust Android phones. All the ones I and my relatives had (LG, Xiaomi) were consistently getting slower and slower as time passed while my current old Iphone SE is just as fast as day 1. It's incredible, I don't know how they do it.

Sometimes I forget that Sony still makes smartphones, they will probably leave the mobile business soon. There are basically Apple, Samsung and the Chinese, and Sony has a fairly small market share.
now they slowy made profit back since 2020. if they keep the momentum, they could turns thing around. hopefully they do. dont want another smartphone brand end up like LG phones.

i dont know how it is with LG, but compared to Xiaomi and others smartphone especially chinese phones, Sony phones known to has clean android OS with very less bloatware, close to Pixel. another phone similliar is Motorola.

I bought an Xperia 1ii last August and it's the best phone I've ever had. Love the screen size and it's an absolutely beautiful looking one too. They still got my headphone jack and excellent speakers on the front, and a side fingerprint scanner that I've been used to since my previous XZ1 in 2017. I might be the only person I know who has one now, but I'll be damned if I will switch as long as Sony continues to make. Been an owner of Xperia phones since 2013. Don't sell in Canada anymore? Screw it. I imported this latest one from the US and will do so again in a few years when I'm in more need of an upgrade.

That said, whatever helps them sell more units is better in my view, so while I don't play CoD at all, it's good to help attract new customers and rebuild a userbase.

They make really great phones. They also charge a huge premium for them though, so I can see why it's a hesitant purchase for people. The new Mk iii models all look to be nice little evolutions of the current line and I'm excited to see what else they have lined up after these.

Sony made a big deal about gaming when announcing the new phones. Not that i understand why someone would choose to play games like COD on a phone, or do people not get hand cramps like i?

I just which they defied trends and made a proper compact phone without a stupid aspect ratio.

Call of Duty Mobile earned 10 billion USD last year, so it's huge. It's pretty fun too, but I stopped playing it as I prefer console games.

I think the matter in Brazil, as explained previously by another Brazilian friend, is that taxes seem to killed Sony there and forced them to be overpriced, along with other brands.

Never tried another android phone myself, been using Sony Ericsson/Xperia since 2005. Mine currently is actually a cheap-ass Xperia XA2 and 3 years now and it's working perfectly. Should've upgraded to 5 ii or 1ii but got my hands full with other stuff lately.

Been a happy costumer since 2005 with Sony Ericsson Walkman W550i, currently with my first budget phone Xperia XA2 which is still working great as day one, thanks to the slow charging mode while sleeping. Battery still gets up to 2 days when used mildly and a whole day when used heavily with its 3300mAh. This 1 III seems like a nice upgrade from last year, but not a drastic one.

Yeah people are underestimating mobile gaming. Sony Music game Fate/Grand Order made a gross of more than $4B by the end of 2019 and its the 3rd highest overall in 2021. Seems that made PS think about it and start their new mobile gaming subdivision.

It wasn't just taxes, Sony was factually overpriced here, Samsung took over the phone and TV market with a bigger range and best cost benefit.

Are the Xperia phones good phones nowadays?

I remember getting the Xperia X1 around 2008 and it was a horrible mess. Sometimes it would not charge at all, the led simply lit up red. This was only solved by repeatedly ejecting and putting back the battery up to 20 times and checking if it started charging. It used that utter shit of an OS that was Windows Mobile. Worst phone Ive ever owned and i swore to never buy a Sony mobile phone again.

I assume they have not improved anything in the last 13 years.

I don't like Apple and Samsung, so if Sony leaves there's almost no one left making high end smartphones. I'd like a new Pixel but Google is only doing mid range phones, apparently.
Same here. I love LG and just bought a used V60. Unfortunately, they just announced their departure from the smartphone business. Hopefully Sony sticks around.

I don't remember Sony using Windows at all? I've been happy with W550i, Satio, C905, K800i, Xperia S, Xperia Z3, Xperia XA2 now. Maybe you could've just replaced that slot?

Sony used WIndows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5 for a few devices. I dont think anyone really liked windows mobile before WP7.

The first Xperia used it, it was horrible!

Sony and Ericsson will always have a place in my heart, being a swede and loving other products created by Sony. I will check out their newer models, I think they are better off now that they use Android

Edit: Dont know what happended to the quote function, it didnt seem to work for some reason

Strange, never heard of that or maybe it was specific for selected markets? Not sure. Do you have the model number or photos?

I've heard that the Xperia 5 II is a good phone. The specs look solid enough. The trouble is, Sony is very slow when it comes to releasing software updates. LG was notorious for that as well with their phones.

Not sure about that, my phone gets regular updates like every 1-4 months.

had an Xperia yearssss ago but Sony hasn't had a phone on any Canadian provider in decades. (was a great phone at the time)

edit: actually I think it was Ericsson

Yeah, that was my experience with the X1 as well. Barely any software updates and when they arrived I had already swapped it for a Nokia. The whole "unchargable"-problem was too critical, it made it impossible to use it in everyday life. I think it got better after a software update but the OS got more sluggish. Not a very pleasant experience with a phone that was to be their flagship model at the time

Windows Mobile was Marketed to next to no one and had no real design goals. It was extremely ambitious but the platform had no real push to have a reason to exist until they refocused with WP7.

I honestly hope Sony makes a comeback, their smartphones are really good but they have lost the brandname.. I don't know how they can recover, and it's a shame because software wise they are second to none.

I am feeling weird typing all this on my S20U but who knows, I was considering going Sony for my next smartphone.

From what I saw it seems during the competition you're not allowed to play with a controller? Not sure. Also having 3.5 jack while charging is a plus, although 4000-4500mAh is already quite massive. It has 240Hz touch scan rate and 4K@120Hz HDR screen, with raised gamma to give you advantage by revealing enemies clearly under the shade or dark areas.

Those mobile gamers seem to take it pretty seriously though:

I now wonder if there's tiger hand held esports.

If you're going to be "competitive" why wouldn't you play the actual game?

Sony's issue with smartphones has never been the tech. In fact they make some of the best phones out there, in terms of tech. Where they fail MISERABLY is launching and marketing them. While Apple, Samsung, LG etc. Announce their phones and launch them a month later, sometimes shorter than that. Sony pushes out an announcement video... then it releases months later, when all the hype has already died down. That is not quick enough for the smart phone market. Ppl have short attention spans. In those months the other manufacturer's announced and released their products.

I got my Xperia XZ1 from my phone provider in November 2017. My Z3 in July 2015 and my ZL in April 2013. All from my Phone/Internet provider. so... Not really decades. They left our market in May of 2019 if I remember right.

Well worth importing, I might add. U.S. model works just fine up here. Just got an update for it last night as well, so it's supported well enough here. If I didn't take the plunge last year on the Xperia 1ii, I totally would be getting the 1iii. It amuses me when I'm out and someone notices and asks "What the hell kind of phone is that?" That long form factor adds so much more screen space. Love it.

As a photographer and a videographer, the 1 iii would be a great emergency camera, especially with the 3.5 jack for external mics. The a7S III camera is weather-resistant, but would like to keep it for fauna and flora when it's raining/drizzling during our monsoon season.

Yeah looked it up and Sony abandoned the Canadian market only in 2019. might have just not seen any locally in a long time. Point is, they were great phones and not in our market anymore.

I'm due a phone change in the next month or two, and was interested in this phone (Xperia 1 iii), despite it being a modest bump to my current Xperia 1, but I've just seen the link below for the Xperia Pro's features - like hdmi-in which should have been on every laptop/tablet/netbook/phone since hdmi out showed up on devices - and now I'm going to be waiting atleast another 12monts for this to become a Xperia 1 iV feature, to be interested in a contract upgrade.

That's a $2500 phone by the way, I don't think you would wanna throw that amount of money if not interested in the professional side of it ;)

I know and I wouldn't...well I would, possibly if money was no object, but hdmi-in is now clearly a selling feature, a cheap one at that on £1,000 phones to add, so I'm now going to wait it out until it is a feature on phone I can get as an upgrade.

My old video camera (HDR-PJ810) has a micro projector and hdmi-in on it, and it is a perfect device to pack when going away, for normal use, and as a backup HD-ready gaming TV.
Before Sony exited the Viao PC business they did some really nice All-in-one units that had hdmi-in on them, too and it really should have be a feature that took off then and been on all devices with a screen and hdmi port - from everyone- IMO; because bi-directional was in the original hdmi specs IIRC.

Them adding this great feature and locking it to a £2,500 phone at its first showing is just so Sony.:)

Soft spot for me, xperia was the only compact phone i could get my hands on circa. 2014ish, every other phone was going after Samsung dimensions... So glad reasonably sized phones have come back

The nice thing about pixels is that you can degoogle them with a custom ROM such as Grapheme OS, Calyx OS, and Lineage OS. Is the Pixel 5 still considered midrange even though it's $700?

Certain Xperias can run Sailfish OS too though but I've no experience with that.

If not for the steep price I would've considered it as a monitor for my Sony a7S III myself, but would rather buy a lens with half that price at least ;) Hope the next Xperia 1 gets the HDMI port. The need to standout from the rest of the market to regain more share.

Been a Sony Ericsson/Xperia since 2005 myself! Not gonna change any time soon, even when they pulled out of our market and have to buy one from the internet with no warranty.

Their phones would have more market share if retailers and carriers had them. Go to Best Buy, Target, Verizon, AT&T and no one has them on display or as an option to buy. You have to buy it first then take it to your carrier.

You still have that method of cellphone tied to a company in the US? It was strange back in 2002-2004 when seen that. Here we just swap sims. Unless you mean 12-24 months leasing.

Wtf is up with the stupid numbering?

I seriously think some of the people they have in their phone and TV divisions are on the bad end of some spectrum. The amount of stupid decisions in those two divisions astound me.

And why the fuck is there still no release date? What's the point of announcing products months and months in advance without a release date.

It's a shame, because I kid you not, the 1II is one of the best phones around. Certainly prefer it to any Samsung and even prefer it to my Pixel 3XL.

Lol at people saying it's a big deal. Sony mobile is not Playstation, people aren't throwing $1200 to play COD on mobile, and Sony phones barely sell much.

It's likely marketing deal carryover from PS4. What they should have done was put out a solid $300 phone and make that the focus for the partnership.

That too, i've heard these cases of having huge release gaps between regions, i don't even know how Sony failed to the very market they were born: Appliances and eletronics. Until like fifteen years ago they were one the biggest players in the market, today they're de facto an entertainment company.
15 years ago was 2006, I think you mean 25 years ago.

2006 is when professionals kept saying they were constantly on their last legs until 2010.

They also sometimes give different regions different names for the same phone, but sell those same devices region unlocked through official dealers adding to the confusion. This started with the Xperia Z3+ which was also called the Z4 or the Xperia W, for wide.

Remember when it was simply Xperia Z, Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4, Z5? I mean there was better competition and few reasons to by them outside the 4k models, but the naming made sense and they build up the brand. Now there's an Xperia one one and an Xperia one two.

It may not have been as bad if they actually named the phone 'Xperia mark 3' instead of 'Xperia 1 III'.

It's a shame because I love my Xperia 5 II, the 21:9 screen takes a bit to get used to but its ideal for multiscreening apps, having a actual headphone jack is a nice feature to have.

Was always a fan of sony and the japanese aesthetic when it comes to phone design, also the oled screens are drop dead gorgeous. After buying a few xperias, I have to say they can be unreliable. Switched to google and love how smooth everything runs and works. I also found out not all oled screens are the same, sony oled, is amazing!
