The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

On a more serious note, how do I rip my GC games for use with Nintendont? I want to put it on my Wii (and maybe my Wii U when I get it back from my brother, if Nintendo allows account transfers sometime in the future). Can I do it with USB Loader GX like how I rip my Wii games? Can I then pull them off the HDD in Windows to transfer to my GC too? Cheers.

Cleanrip! Thats what you need, works brilliantly.

You can use USB Loader GX or CFG Loader. I prefer CFG Loader (hooray for Clipper), and used it about a month ago to rip Mario Sunshine. It ripped okay, but I couldn't get the game to book so I could do the disc verification. I then ripped it with USB Loader GX and it worked fine. After that, I was able to load it via CFG Loader. Crazy goings-on.

Sorry to re-ask... but what does Nintendont look like when running Melee in widescreen?

some photos I just took:

Wall of text but if anyone wants to reminisce with me please read on. :)

What's up Gamecube Gaf? Never posted in here. Huge GC fan though. Got my Platinum Console with Star Fox Assault and a memory card at Costco in 2003. It lasted until late 2005 then it stopped reading discs. Called Nintendo support and they sold me a Jet Black GC console only for only $50 (that included shipping too).

I ended up selling that system (but kept games and controllers) for the Wii's launch. My launch Wii broke around 2011, around that time I was so disappointed with the Wii that I just bought a purple Gamecube instead since I barely played Wii games.

To be honest I loved the system like crazy around the time it was current and adamantly defended it constantly in Jr. High. A few years ago I was kind of put off by all the posthumous love the system got, many years after the system was discontinued. Where were all these people when the system was still in stores? Probably my many arguments with people in Jr. High about it warranted this response.

Seeing the prices of the games for the console these days is crazy. Wish it was cheaper for everyone just now getting into it. Glad I picked up my games back in the day when I could. My original copies of Thousand Year Door and Wind Waker were stolen around 2010 from someone who was "borrowing" them, but luckily I replaced them then instead of waiting.

There were some I didn't replace though. I used to do lots of trading on GameTZ.com in the mid 2000s and ended up trading away Star Fox Assault, Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Master Quest, and Four Swords Adventures. Especially miss the last one.

Here is my collection:

When I bought Viewtiful Joe back in the day from GS and it didn't have the cover art, I didn't know how to print something at the proper size, so I looked up the image of the cover art and spent an afternoon replicating it.

Only one not pictured is Jungle Beat.

My favorites would have to be:
Legend Of Zelda: Collector's Edition
Super Smash Bros Melee
Mario Kart Double Dash
007 Nightfire
Paper Mario Thousand Year Door

Games that didn't hold up for me:
Super Mario Sunshine
Star Fox Adventures

Anyways, it's an amazing system and I recently picked up a Sony PVM 20L5 monitor (supports 480p-1080i over component) and wanted to ask if the NTSC Gamecube can use Scart or if there is any alternative to the expensive component cables?

I saw some posts early about this and wanted ask, is Nintendo Australia still selling component cables? Had no idea that was a thing.

NTSC GC can't use SCART, but it can do S-Video unlike the PAL GC.

Nintendo Australia sold out of those cables around the start of this year :(

Ah man that is too bad. Thanks for the info. Would it be worthwhile to pick up a Pal Cube? Or should I just replace my Wii Mini with a Wii and call it a day?

Depnds. If you want gameboy player or system link capabilities than stick with the 'cube and probably your best bet is to get an S-video cable (honestly the 'cubes S video is pretty good.) Otherwise if you don't care about either of the above, go with a Wii.

It depends. Most people are happy with S-Video. RGB SCART on the Cube is pretty nice though. I use a PAL Cube with SCART on my PVM (my PVM doesn't do 480p though so I'm not missing anything there). I usually use Swiss to force 240p and it looks pretty nice. I put in a Xeno GC chip so I can play any region too.

If you're thinking about going the Wii route, Sixfortyfive also did a fantastic comparison between the GC component and Wii component. GC component is superior (as was suspected), but Wii component should be fine really. I guess you just have to decide whether the price of the GC component cable is worth the upgrade for you.

I would love to see GC 480p on a PVM though :P

Thank you both. Forgot I had an old S-Video cord I bought for the SNES about 5 years ago. Went to set it up but it wouldn't work on my PVM when I tried it, it turns out that little black square at the bottom of S-Video cords was absent on this one, my other S-Video cords that work on this monitor all have that piece.

Well I can't drop that much money on cables unfortunately, too bad the GC component cables are non-standard.

Would it be better to have Gamecube S-Video or Wii Component?

Gamecube if you absolutely want to take advantage of something like the Gameboy Player. Wii if you want to prioritise image quality.

I don't think I've used my Gameboy Player since 2005, I just meant purely for video. So it looks like Wii component would be best. Thanks. Now to see if someone will buy my Wii Mini, lol.

I think I've asked this question before but I want to be sure before doing something I could regret.

I have a GC, Wii and Wii U (all PAL systems) and I have Baten Kaitos Origins (GC game - NTSC) that I play on my PAL GC thanks to a Freeloader.

Now, I want to play it on my PAL Wii/Wii U BUT with my physical copy (no rips). Is it possible? If it's possible, how? If it's not, what's the best solution for this?

Many thanks in advance!

Gamecube games cannot go into a Wii U.

You could play the physical copy on a softmodded Wii, or a Wii with low enough firmware to run a Freeloader.

With a softmodded Wii are you refering to a Wii with a Homebrew Channel or something like that? And what firmware should I need to run a Freeloader? (sorry, I'm a newbie and can't make searchs from here :D)

Thanks for your answer!

More on topic: Where can I get an "Everything or Nothing" PAL version for cheap? Any possibilities for a HD remaster? (I don't know who owns the Bond IP anymore)

Yup, this thread is a good place to start with softmodding your Wii. You'd need a firmware under 3.3 to run the Freeloader as this is when Nintendo blocked it.

I personally wouldnt recommend buying the freeloader as the homebrew channel makes it redundant. You can enable region free with no hassle nowadays

Baten Kaitos arrived today :D

My Cube collection is starting to become respectable, but it still has a while to go.

Anyway I've decided to not buy any games other than new releases until I clear my backlog a bit, so my Cube collection will be staying like this for the time being.

Neither, but, they already have a Freeloader. If all they wanna do is play is this one game it's worth a shot. Otherwise modding is the way to go for sure.

Avoid using Titania. She will kill enemies easily for a while, but she'll grow extremely slowly. If she's hogging all the experience your other characters won't get any stronger so you will struggle. The best thing to do with her early on is to take away her weapons and use her to bait enemies for your other units to kill. Or give her a very weak weapon and have her weaken enemies for someone else to finish off.

The Laguz in PoR/RD suck, don't use them.

Don't promote your units until level 20, since promoted units (like Titania) gain experience more slowly. Ike is an exception, traditionally the main character automatically promotes at a certain point in the story and he does after chapter
17
(spoiler in case you don't want to know). So you should try to have him at level 20 at that point if possible.

Beating chapters more quickly and accomplishing certain unlisted objectives (like not letting NPCs die, for example) gets you more bonus experience. You can't use it in the first few chapters, but once you get the pre-battle menu you can use that to divvy out experience before a chapter. Bonus exp is pretty valuable since most Fire Emblem games don't really allow for any sort of effective grinding, you just have to go with what you have.

Regarding the difficulty, I don't remember it ever spiking. It's a pretty reasonable difficulty curve with just a few bumps.

And sometimes you need certain characters to recruit others. Many can be recruited just by talking to them with the main character (Ike in this case) but some have relationships with other characters. There are usually hints about this in the story dialogue or pre-battle discussions. Most (but not all) non-boss enemies with character portraits can be recruited, so keep that in mind.

Thanks a lot for this, It's helping me understand so a couple of more questions (anyone with knowledge, feel free to answer!)

.- Can I try to play through the game without having any ally killed? yesterday I was about to finish a chapter but Boyd got killed... since I heard allies are gone for good when killed, I re-started from scratch and managed to beat the chapter with no deaths. The next chapter, Soren got killed and same, I began again. will this be a problem as I continue?? are some allies supposed to die one way or another?

.- Are there missable things in the game? A Thief took loot from a chest and I am wondering if I can get that later on or is it gone for good.

.- can I saved in the middle of a fight? or is only suspend allowed? I know I can save but I wonder if the save begins from the point I left it or if it's going to start the chapter all over.

yeah, game got really hard after a certain chapter, everyone is too weak, Ike, Oscar, Boyd, Rhys, Soren, all weak as fuck, non would survive two attack scenes so I see myself heaing like crazy and retreating...

Baten Kaitos arrived today :D

how much did it cost? nice game :)

My Freeloader doesn't work fine sometimes so the softmodding option seems my better option. I will look into it, thanks!

This is something you get a different answer on depending on who you ask. In most FE games (all but Awakening and the unlocalized FE12) character deaths are permanent.

Some people say you should continue without them, that's part of the challenge. Others, like myself, prefer to restart if someone dies. Personally I see it kind of like a puzzle, finding the right solution to finish the chapter with no deaths. Others just don't like losing characters in general.

.- Are there missable things in the game? A Thief took loot from a chest and I am wondering if I can get that later on or is it gone for good.

Yes, there are some missables. Every resource is limited in these games, money, experience, equipment (because of money), etc. So when a chest is looted by an enemy, unless you kill that enemy it's gone for good. It's not the end of the world if you do miss something, but in general you don't want to miss stuff.

Note that when an enemy has an item with green text in their inventory they drop it. Anytime an enemy thief loots a chest the item will be a droppable one. Be careful though, only one item can be dropped. Some thieves already have droppable items or may loot multiple chests so you want to kill them before they loot the chests that way you can get both.

.- can I saved in the middle of a fight? or is only suspend allowed? I know I can save but I wonder if the save begins from the point I left it or if it's going to start the chapter all over.

Not in Path of Radiance I think. IIRC it's sequel was the first game to implement actual mid-battle save points. So basically you have to beat a chapter in one go, no saving/restarting mid-battle.

If you're still really early in the game starting over wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing in the world. FE has it's own quirks and you've kind of wrapped your head around some of them, so you could make some better decisions in those early chapters that could make things easier in the long run.

Or you could just power through. You will get tons of characters so if you feel like the new recruits do better than the existing characters you could swap them out. Using everyone is unrealistic due to the limited experience, even in later chapters you can only use 12 or so at a time.

Not a PAL SNES RGB SCART cable. They're wired differently to the others. You need an NTSC wired RGB cable

yeah, it's crazy.

Even for a PAL 'cube? Damn.

Speaking of weird cabling... Before getting GC component cables I had an S-video cable for the machine. When I got the Components I started using the Svideo cable on the N64. Apparently it doesn't work properly as while with the 'cube I got a nice clear video output, the N64 gave me the checkerboard pattern indicating it was just sending a composite signal through them.

What a weird quirk. I had to buy a new S video cable for the N64 before getting a better picture. I've heard that like 90% of S video cables for the N64 suffer from this ridiculous problem.

Got a Wii in my town on eBay for 30, off to pick it up soon.

I doesn't require a special cable, right? just use ur snes scart cable on a pal gcn through the regular av multout?
Nintendo used the same AV cords for SNES, N64, and Gsmecube but changed it on Wii for no apparent reason.

Maaaaan.... some dissonance going on up in here.

I'm thinking I want to try buying a GC again, but now I'm kinda thinking about getting indigo. I don't even know why -- I didn't like the indigo systems till like... yesterday.

So I dunno. Do I get indigo or orange?

Why must life be so difficult!?

I would suspect it was because of the component output on the Wii. The standard multi-out wouldn't be able to support it, so it was changed to support both. As such, the old video cables had to be rendered incompatible.

Yeh, the PAL SNES seems to be the odd one out.

Get both :P Orange one NTSC, Indigo PAL :P Or something :P

Oh wow, found Mega Man X collection the other day in my attic. Apparently the game goes for like $70+?

Yeah. It's a really good collection though and displays in native 240p. Over component it's just...it's so beautiful.

Apparantly there's no real advantage over the ~$15 PS2 version, but the IQ is inevitably so much better so I couldn't pass it up.

Why's that? PS2 has component cables.

Quite true! GCN outputs a cleaner image though.

Really? I believe you, but I'd just never heard that before.

I used to have the GC version, but sold it for like $15 several years ago so that I had all the MMX games on one console :/

My consolation is that they're not the greatest ports anyway I guess...

Yeah, it's pretty well-established that the PS2's video output via component isn't very good. It's decent, but it lacks clarity. The GC's by contrast, is excellent.

PS2 has HDMI adapters which should do a better quality image than component.

I used to have Mega Man X Collection on the Cube.

Didn't the PS2 version of MMX Collection have better loading times or sound quality or something? I can't remember.

It's possible it has better music, but loading times? Better on the PS2 than the Gamecube? Is there a single multiplat game that can boast better loading times on the PS2?

PS2 has HDMI adapters which should do a better quality image than component.

Doubtful. PS2 outputs a bad signal or something. I have a 60GB backward compatible PS3 through HDMI and games still look much worse than the DC or GC output in terms of IQ.

Is there something wrong with the port? I played through MMX and MMX2 and the only thing I noticed was the music being streamed but other than that I didn't notice anything wrong with them. Are the PS1 versions the bad ones?

Those HDMI adapters aren't going to output any higher than the component. Probably even worse in all actuality.

Why do you say that? Transcoding an image or simply changing the connector it travels through isn't improving it. In fact you're lucky if it doesn't actually degrade the image somehow even slightly.
