What is it about Nintendo that you appreciate the most?

Nintendo exclusives stays as exclusives regardless if its a hit or not, and it's not even ported to PC.

Sadly Sony PS lost this conviction about exclusives.

ultra polish on their man franchises on day one , it's a thing of beauty

The only thing we need to appreciate about a VIDEO GAME COMPANY is their games…. nothing more… They are not ours friends.

I don't get this sentiment, it's pointlessly cynical in a way that clashes with the game developers themselves.

Yes, it's a business and has a profit/corporate side. But it also has genuinely devoted creatives inside it that drive the main franchises and releases, and the best of these people are clearly there not only to get a paycheck but also to build something innovative and lasting.

I have high regard for these people (Miyamoto, Koizumi, Aonuma, Sakurai, etc etc) and their work, and when we say that we appreciate or love "nintendo" we're clearly talking about them. The superstructure around them, the business making their creativity possible, is another necessary side of the coin but the company is not cynical all the way down, it's quite the opposite.

Also, they make kids friendly games that are actually great to play. A rare thing in this industry.

Nothing really. 95% of their releases don't appeal to me, if they didn't own Pokémon I probably wouldn't even own their systems.

I think the only other Switch games I finished were Odyssey, BotW, Donkey Kong and Metroid Dread.

They obviously don't tell good stories and most of their games have gameplay which is too shallow to be engaging.

The amount of fun games they put out.
N left me roses by the stairs -- Nintendo lets me know it cares ...

Their games. I, too, have grown to dislike this (along with most every other) company. They keep making baffling decisions, IMO.

EDIT: Companies as a rule have gone from "We want to make money" to "We want to make ALL THE MONEY." No problem with the former; the latter is off-putting.
Did they also turn the lights off and carry you home?

That their games can be fun/enjoyable no matter what age you are.

That's also what made (classic) Disney so great back in the day.

yep.

but many of their games are tied to the contemporary nintendo hardware too.
n64 analog stick, wii u gamepad, wiimote, gamecube controller...
nintendo hardware usually inspires some development aspects of the game.
even when nintendo ports games to their newer consoles, sometimes they lose something.

so if you appreciate the games, you gotta pour one out for the hardware too.

How they make piracy feel like the morally correct course of action

I used to appreciate their pimp style attitude backhand against other developers publishing on their platforms. They actually forced them to deliver a certain minimum quality. Not so much anymore, the eShop looks like a dumpster fire.

Sadly Sony PS lost this conviction about exclusives.
I think it's Herman who believed Horizon deserved much more success and pushed for a PC release, it was back then the first real Sony 1st party game on PC.

Which of course is bonkers, Horizon didn't deserve to be the game that opened the gates.

Their ability to have some of the best game makers next to a legal department that will sue other games for mechanics they didn't even invent.

Real answer: I don't think anyone does a better job at reinventing their IP over time though, and some of their first-party stuff is just really polished day-one without patching being needed.

That they know they can keep doing the bare minimum and fucking their customers and take full advantage of them because they can.
