Did you ask her to replace it? If it meant so much to you I'm sure she'd understand.

If I had known that the video quality was so much better on the Cube than the Wii, and that prices for the cable would go sky-high, I wouldn't have given it to her. So it didn't mean much to me at the time.

(Just so we're clear, she lost the cable, not the Gamecube.)

I notice the official RGB are quite expensive too, would a third party one like this be better than playing on a Wii in 480p? I know most third party cables aren't much good but at that price difference I'm wondering if it's worth the chance.

It connects into the analog port of the Gamecube, so it should NOT give you 480p. Gamecube has two different video ports, one analog for composite and s-video, and one digital, for component. I guess that kind of cable will give you s-video quality over scart, since it would not trigger the proper chips in the cube.

There is not 3rd party cable for the digital port.

So it will be worse than playing in 480p with a Wii.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but:

Gamecube composite < Gamecube S-video < Wii component < Gamecube component.

The first two will be interlaced, and the component cables will gave you progressive scan image. Composite uses only one signal to carry all 3 colour information, s-video uses two signals and component carries each colour in a different signal.

Plus it seens that the output video circuit from the Wii is worse than the one from the Cube, which gives you a slighty better image.

Sorry but is the bolded actually true? Do you get a better image quality from gamecube component than Wii component? If so, why?

Does anyone know of any decent wireless controllers that have rumble? I have this one:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000WRZTAC/?tag=neogaf0e-20

and it's decent, but the layout kinda bugs me. I'm looking for one closer to the original Gamecube controller.

Wii component output is worse than the GCN one. I guess Nintendo just cheaped out on that aspect. There are some comparison shots a few pages back I believe.

Yes, and Wii image seems to be somehow filtered, not as sharp:

Notice the shadow edges on the gold metalic areas of the Wii screen.

My blood is literally boiling right now, I had a component cable for GC last year and I sold it because I figured that I didnt need it with my Wii, that picture in the OP is killing me :(, im gonma have to buy it back :(

Is Starfox Assault good?
I wouldn't pay much for it. Problems are too few arwing missions and lots of on-foot missions (what was with flying games at that time...see also Stars Wars Rebel Strike), one of the control schemes is similar to Jet Force Gemini. Then theres the fact that when you're in the arwing I just don't like the changes to the shooting mechanics. Multiple levels of charge shots feel wrong and when you hit a one shot comes out. In the N64 version hitting a lets out more than 1, it makes a noticeable difference in hand strain when you want to shoot loads.

The on foot missions are well, not as terrible as the Trials of the Jedi in Rebel Strike (Rogue Squadron engine was not made for platforming...what was going on at Factor 5) but not the action you would like from a Star Fox game. The music is quite well done orchestral sounding stuff.

Speaking of Star Wars Rebel Strike. Co-op Rogue Leader makes it worth tracking down if you can find a buddy to play through it. Just don't expect to beat it (last level one of you will have to fly the millennium falcon, that thing is virtually impossible to fly through the death star).

Someone correct me if I am wrong but:

Gamecube composite < Gamecube S-video < Gamecube RGb scart < Wii component < Gamecube component.
Added one. RGB scart has double colour resolution of S-video but is PAL only (and S-video doesn't work on those anyway). I can't remember if it is better than 480i component though.

I notice the official RGB are quite expensive too, would a third party one like this be better than playing on a Wii in 480p?
You would be playing in 480i if you were using a Wii and PAL gamecube games. If its import games, just stick with the Wii as 480p should be better.

Anyway, is it me or does that scart lead have all the output pins? Its a waste of the pins as the RGB signal only needs 9 of them to work (I noticed the official ones go down this route).

Ok so, I quite love the Gamecubes "quirky" library. Doshin the Giant is something I always intended to play but its a Europe / Japan only release! Anyone know if its worth it to figure out how to do region free stuff to play it?

So the Baten Kaitos series: what should I do about it?

I had the first game, played it for like 30 minutes. Didn't really grab me. But then, I admit that's not a lot of time to put into the game.

But I've heard really good things about Origins. Is either game worth picking up?

Recently bought a silver gamecube, as our (entire) collection was stolen, sadly didnt notice that its a DOL-101... so no Composite....

and it sucks hard, because it seems only now that I need to repurchase the best games on the console, they all went up in price....

and yea, bought a gamecube but have no games to play on it

LUCKILY the memory cards were left behind at my Girlfriends moms house and she mailed those to us (I guess she thought they had to do with Jewelry...? she doesnt know what a memory card is)

Need to find (again)
Animal Crossing
Paper Mario
Tales of Symphonia
Harvest Moon
Wind Waker
SSBM
Eternal Darkness

the hunt hurts the wallet lol

Anyone know if its worth it to figure out how to do region free stuff to play it?
There's not much figuring out to do man. Buy a Freeloader and enjoy. :)

So the options for optimal visual output differ from region to region?

Europeans can't capitalize on the fidelity produced by the component cables or S-video? Our only option is Scart?

Or was there more than one model of Gamecube released here?

Oh, thats it eh? Nice! I think Ill pick up a copy some day then. :)

EDIT: PS, can anyone explain the price of these particular Action Replays? I assume it has something to do with softmodding or modding in general?

So im going to buy Sphinx and the cursed mummy, is the gamecube-version the way to go, or is it a half-assed port like so much else on nintendo-systems?

What else is a half ass port on the cube? The Wii maybe, and a couple wiiu games, but most gc ports/ versions were much better looking and playing than ps2.

A lot of you have really clean looking game cases. I feel like all the games in my GC Collection have really poor condition cases. I wonder if I can buy new ones :/

Its probably the most pieced together group of games I own too. A disc here, a manual there, just to get them complete. Most are from Gamestop. I'd buy a few copies of a game and take the nicest pieces then return the unused ones XD. At least I got most of it pretty cheap (except for Zelda titles). Others are games I owned when I was younger before I took care of my stuff.

Wind Waker and Sunshine were HUGE disappointments after OoT/MM and SM64.
Cmon now. Wind Waker is a plenty enjoyable game and Sunshine plays so much better than SM64 does.
Not long ago it was discovered you can unlock the original F-Zero AX courses in F-Zero GX using an Action Replay. Subsequently, the prices have exploded.
This was such a neat find.

I have a dream of owning an AX cab one day. The local Celebration Station has one.

What do you mean by play exactly? It's a great game no doubt, but it has some of the worst camera controls for a platformer. It pretty much can't handle the hover nozzle or whatever, especially in tight spaces.

Well my GC component cable is on its way now apparently, along with a spare GB Micro faceplate. Guess it's time to go grab my 'cube from my parents' house!

Living in NZ mostly sucks for gaming stuff, but who would've known good old Nintendo of Australia would have a treasure trove of old gaming accessories stashed away!

Now to cross my fingers that they didn't misunderstand and send me a composite cable instead, lol!

Hm, hope mine is sent out tomorrow, my card still hasn't been charged either..

I don't think I'll actually get notified when it's really been sent out, and I haven't checked my card, but they've been pretty quick when I've ordered from them before, even when it's coming to New Zealand the delivery time wasn't too bad.

Wind Waker and Sunshine were HUGE disappointments after OoT/MM and SM64.

I actually agree on Wind Waker. I actually defended the art style before it released. I expected something great... then suddenly I found myself bored to death while sailing long distances and encountering perhaps what I think is the most annoying enemy in any video game. The miniblin.

Controls. I find Mario much more responsive in Sunshine. In 64 he is kind of slow to speed up and doing a complete 180° turn while not running makes Mario do this little walking circle that annoys the crap out of me.

I found both games to have annoyances with the camera pretty frequently but the camera is more adjustable in Sunshine than 64 if I recall correctly. In 64 it kind of clicks from one option to the other and in Sunshine you could move it more finely with the C-stick.

It's a nice little game, but that wouldn't be wort the effort. I looked forward to it for some months and then played it for two days...

The Gamecube is probably my all-time favorite, although it was pretty depressing to see so many third parties abandoning it back in the days. It still delivered excellent games and I've been using it more than my 360 lately, since most games hold up pretty well. Especially Resident Evil, Killer7 and P.N. 03. I could play them all day, every day.

The GC version is the one to go with there. It started life as a GC exclusive and before release had the other versions added. So they are the ports of the GC version.

The GC is probably one of my favorite consoles of all time. I never understood why it didn't sell better. The thing had some amazing, and best of the gen exclusive releases. I don't have any crazy fancy versions or such for it, but I do have VGA cables for it. I had a tv that could support component input but not 480p, so I ordered 2 component cables and had 1 modded into a VGA cable. I still remember playing WW and MP on my crt monitor in 480p, that shit was hot.

I suppose a lot of people out there are misinformed:

there was ONE GERMAN company(wolfsoft) who did a better job than nintendo with producing a component cable back then.

that cable was a bit more expensive than the original one which was done by nintendo but some german magazines were testing that cable and wrote that its better than the original.

i cant confirm it because it was already a pretty expensive cable back then(around 70€) and it now costs double.

if anyone is interested in it, then try this link:
http://www.wolfsoft.de/shop/product...duct/gamecube-componenten-kabel-(yuv)-2m.html

oh yeah and about the freeloader:

there were two different versions of it:

there was one with 1.06b and 1.06B and the one with the big B is the one which has less problems.

you can figure it out inside of the disc(where you can put the finger in)

Thanks for that info,. I had no idea there were any proper third-party component cables.

And thanks for the Freeloader info too, could come in handy if I try to seek out some NTSC releases.

Thanks for the info. I did not know there was a 3rd party solution. But at EUR 133 it is hardly a cheaper alternative.

About the Freeloader: searching on ebay I can see that it is an European product. Does it work with all Gamecube versions? Like to play Japanese/European games on a US system? Or it is just for the PAL console?

I've actually been debating on hooking up my gamecube again... it's been far too long since I've played it and I have a stack of both US and Japanese games I'd just love to tear into once more. One problem, though... no memory cards! I can't find any of them!

I've checked the local disc replays too with no success... I may just have to grab a couple off of eBay or something.

Here is my humble collection, I got most of my favorites and I love those little Gamecube Disc cases, im so glad I got them when I had the chance, Love the NINTENDO zipper handles.

But I've heard really good things about Origins. Is either game worth picking up?
Origins is much faster paced and has some great voice acting. Its also localised by those 8-4 people...just get accustomed to the battle system.

The first game is a bit slow. If you don't turn off summary it is very slow. Probably the worst aspect was how loot was handled. I guess it was trying to be a trading card game in that you get up to one card on victory but it just made things a grind if you were after certain pieces of loot or the magnus combos. If you have patience it has some neat things like being able to choose not to level up and how you can work out what element attacks are based off their sound (another reason to skip the summary screens).

I'd say origins is well worth picking up but it depends on how much it costs these days.

So the options for optimal visual output differ from region to region?

Europeans can't capitalize on the fidelity produced by the component cables or S-video? Our only option is Scart?

RGB Scart is better than S-video. The digital out port is present on earlier models but buying a component lead for 480i only is not worth it.

About the Freeloader: searching on ebay I can see that it is an European product. Does it work with all Gamecube versions? Like to play Japanese/European games on a US system? Or it is just for the PAL console?
I believe it does work on all gamecube regions. Now the later platinum gamecubes apparently don't work with the older freeloaders. The freeloaders released just after the Wii launch do work on those (but be careful about getting the Wii freeloader for Wii games).

I totally forgot I had that GameCube microphone, it came with Mario Party 6. How is Odama, it looks like an intresting game and is fairly cheap, might look into it.

Odama is fucking brilliantly weird and hard as balls. You may hate it completely, or may love it. I love it.

Again about the Freeloader:

what is the difference between the freeloader like this:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390581196672&ssPageName=ADME:X:eRTM:DE:1123

And the action replay like this:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/370800375268

by the description I understand that the action replay includes the freeloader. But it works on Gamecube or only in the Wii. Which version should I get?

Someone may correct me, but I think Nintendo patched out Action Replay and Freeloader on Wii, so it probably only works on Gamecube. Best and easiest way for region-free on Wii (and GC backwards compatibility) is Homebrew and Gecko OS.

by the description I understand that the action replay includes the freeloader. But it works on Gamecube or only in the Wii. Which version should I get?
If I'm not mistaken they both look like mini DVDs and so should work on the Gamecube. Don't bother with the action replay. You can't enter codes with that version (seriously, Datel?) and I hear the bulit-in ones are kinda crap (infinite lives and other zero imagination things). Wii versions will probably only work if your Wii is on like Firmware 2.1 (before the clock!).

I hear they don't work on platinum gamecubes. This video seems to confirm. Not sure which 1.06 that is though and since google isn't case sensitive it seems 1.06b doesn't work with platinum but not sure about 1.06B.

Like has been said, you can use a Wii and homebrew instead. Just be careful about leaving the Wii on standby with memory cards in, especially with that stupid connect 24 nonsense (damages Wii GPU and heats the memory card slot).

True that, I lost a Wii because of that shit. :(
