Guys was just scouring the web for some used telephoto deals, these caught my attention:

Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L for $980
Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS v1 for $1580

Which would be better for stills and photography? I know the IS is great and essential for video but dat price (

I mean would IS really matter if this is going to be on a tripod anyway? Even for stills I dont see myself lugging around such a heavy lens around my neck.

Wouldnt the non IS be a better bargain?

What say you GAF?? Which lens is the better deal?

I have a 70-200mm f/4L (non-IS) for sale.

I wonder if the D600 will have the uncompressed 4:2:2 HDMI live video output of the D800. That would be even more amazing - though if it's $1500 or so I can't imagine that would be there. I love my D90, but it's really subpar for any video work, and I tend to like the footage I've seen of the D800.

I know Canon seems to be the way to go for video use, but since video is secondary I think I can do without it (so long as the rolling shutter isn't nearly as bad as it is on the D90).

Bit of a late response from me but thanks for the advice, will definitely look into both. The Canon 18-55mm 2.8 USM also caught my eye but will probably be (way) above my budget

I've read some reviews and people are generally negative about the VC version of the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 because of the bad and loud auto focusing (VC is pretty important for me, mostly shoot out of hand).

I'm afraid the Tokina 11-16 is a little too wide angle for me. Although i do generally shoot landscape, i'd like to buy my new lens with my Japan trip next year taken into account (lots of cities and people)

What about the Tokina AT-X 165 PRO DX AF 16-50mm f/2.8 or the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM? Main reason is for upgrade is to upgrade is too replace my kit lens with a lens that is sharper and faster (good bokeh would be nice as well).

Best to worst for performance
F2.8 IS -> F2.8 -> F4 IS -> F4

best to worst for price and weight

f4->f4 IS -> f2.8 -> f2.8 IS

so the classic conundrum. I found the 2.8IS much too unwieldy for carrying around all day and using handheld, so I went for an f4 IS. If you're shooting on a tripod I'd go for the 2.8 non-IS.

I agree. As long as you´re sure to shoot from the tripod almost exclusively you wont need the IS anyways (it would even be a hindrance). But don´t go cheap, take the 2.8 over the 4, otherwise you might regret it down the road.

If I'm not wrong, 701 actually is a fluid head, with fluid for smooth movements. It doesn't (?) have tilt/drag controls.

501 has tilt/drag control, but doesnt actually have any fluid.


501 is more heavy duty (so more stable and secure), can bear heavier rigs and any camera. 701 is for light-weight camcorders/dslrs.

I use a 501 since I felt it was more future proof, and can give you smooth results, but I guess 701 would be smoother. 502 is the best of both worlds but costs a lot more.

Also, 501 is not much more expensive than 701, so comes across as a better deal.

I like it. It has only one main strap though and can get uncomfortable with lots of gear. (Long lens + 3 primes + 2 short zoom lenses + flash). Has an outer pocket to fasten a tripod. Great weather protection if you get caught in the rain.

I had it at seaworld and the retractable cover allowed me to get some shots of the main shamu show while allowing me to stick the camera under the cover right before a big splash.

The biggest problem is that side access is limited and only really gives quick access to a single area of the bag. To get to other lenses you have to take it off.

The NEX and the Fuji X mount have virtually the same flange distance, somewhere between 19mm to 20mm. Which ever has larger mount diameter will have better support for FF sensor.

The Nikon 28mm F/1.8 looks awesome and runs about $700.

The 24mm F/1.4 runs about $2200 (but you get what you pay for)

For fixed 35mm Nikon only has budget and high end lenses.

Get the 50mm F/1.4 for sure (I was lucky enough to use that lens on a D3x once. MAUI WOWIE!)

The 85mm F/1.8 is awesome for a $490 lens. Used to own one, but sold because I don't do much close up portraits.

If I were to get a D600 in the future I would probably sell most of my gear and just get Nikon's new-ish 28-300mm which is extremely good for a full range lens

Does anyone understand the RX1 control scheme?

There is the aperture ring, but the is no "A" on the aperture ring. There is an Exp. Comp. dial but no shutter dial. And the focus ring has "0.2-0.35m" "0.3-infinity" mark. It's not linear?

I'm getting really excited to go full-frame, though I have no idea what I'll do with my D90. Maybe sell it to a friend at a really great price just to give them a treat.

I've personally never done it, actually, because the D90 video sucks so I've never bothered. However, I'm getting constant requests to put together some kind of "family tree/history" film/documentary consisting of interviews with my rather large extended family. These are becoming more urgent as the extended family ages, so I'm really thinking I might go ahead and do it with a D600 (no rolling shutter issues with stationary interview-style video I'd think).

One device I've read about is the Atomos Ninja, which is basically just an external harddrive that mounts to the hot shoe. Rather pricey, but looks rather easy to use.

However, I'm on Windows and would have to invest in some kind of video editing software, so it's hardly going to be a cheap thing to do (particularly since I'd essentially just be giving it away to family members - maybe I should make them donate to a Kickstarter, haha!)

3) 1080 60p! but AVCHD.
