Wow. I actually just looked at the achievement list for the first time. What did you do about the Karma based achievements? 3 playthroughs or did you just juggle saves?
saved just before I leveled up and loaded up a save and did something bad before i leveled up. I played as a good character so it was easy to get bad karma.

How do I pick pocket someone and put a grenade in their pocket at the same time for the achievement? I tried it on a random resident in Megaton but it didn't work.

Well, I tried to play this game, but a horrible sound glitch is maiking it impossible. Sometimes the sound will work, and then it all turns horrifc noises that make me turn off the sound completely.
Okay, so I recall having this problem in Bioshock (maybe), but I think I fixed it by toggling hardware acceleration for sound. Is there an option in Fallout? I tried going to the Sound part of the control panel, but its an oldish-card and lacks that option.
It feels like some % of the sound effects are just playing incorrectly.
I bought the standard guide at CC when they had it on sale (plus $10 off gift card = 6 dollars) and it's approx. 465 pages give or take a few - I don't have it on me so I'm not 100% on the exact number. It's a hefty guide and extremely helpful and loaded with content. Don't regret it one bit (would've bought it for 30)
It should be noted that one of the loading screen's hints states you should be careful where you hide your stash, if you stuff it in a container that you do not own, don't be surprised if all the items in it are gone the next time you come back. I have a safehouse of my own, and for 20 odd hours all my items didn't disappear, although back in Morrowind/Oblivion disappearing loot was one of the major buggy annoyances.

I'm really looking to get back into this one, but could use some tips. The game has glitched up and shut my PS3 down 4 times, so that left a bad taste and i moved onto some Castlevania OoE once i reached LVL 3.
but i really just want to do like i did in Oblivion and go off exploring the land as a nomad. I have a difficult time with $$$ since a bed is so expensive to rest in. what's the best way to just get out on the landscape and start leveling?
Find a bed that you can use for free. Never pay for it, they are ripping you off. For good characters, in Megaton
if you defuse the bomb you get your own safehouse courtesy of Luca Simms, but if he's dead, don't worry his son will still give you the keys to the safehouse and allow you to complete the quest.
For neutral/evil characters it will harder at the start, as it means clearing out Raider camps in the wasteland and using their beds. You can also find beds in subways and likely other dungeons as well.
Exp comes in many ways. Once you've secured a bed, always make sure you are in "well rested" condition, as it grants +10% to exp. Killing mobs is the staple of every rpg, so that works. If your Science or Lockpick skills are high enough, you get exp for every terminal hacked or every lock picked. Completing quests usually give you a huge chunk of exp, but this might not be what you want as you're going for freeform play style.
Take note that level scaling is not present in Fallout 3, the game's monsters have a fixed level range. if you're low level and you encounter a Super Mutant Brute/Master, run. If you see Mirelurks and you're still only equipped with a pistol, run. Discretion is always the better part of valor when you're at the bottom of the food chain. :lol
I'm on the 360 and I have seen FO3 freeze 5 times to date. Irritating.

I think Beth fucked up on the unique gear part, what happens when such one piece items' condition degrades? Browsing through gamefaqs, the only proposed (not fully tested) solution is to find caravan traders with high Repair skills (we're talking 60+ at least, for comparison Moira Brown's is only around 20)...Hopefully a patch will address this by giving more merchants high Repair skills so we can spend the caps in a meaningful manner at endgame or allow us to combine parts from the same weapons group to keep the awesome gears going.
Yesterday I finally got that sniper rifle! The scope doesn't zoom in that far, but it's good enough. I've found targeting the non-shooting arm of targets gives me the best effect. It either kills them, or the get stunned enough to drop their weapon or fall back.
I also went to the supermarket near megaton. What was surprising about using the sniper rifle on a sneak kill was that the noise of the gun and the death of an enemy did not set off alarms. I just picked them off one by one. On one kill, the enemy died two feet from another patrol and the patrol did nothing.
Can someone tell me what that robot does if you let it out?
I came out of that market with 540/210 weight(i had only 27 pounds before i went in the market). Much better than before. After repairing several items, i was down to 370(thanks guys for that tip!). I would have had more weight if it wasn't that the raiders in the market respawned and I left before a third batch popped on.
VATS Question:
Sneaking up on someone with a sniper rifle, if I use vats and it shows me that the arm has a 83% chance, does that mean that it's only 83% in vats mode? If i shoot that same arm without vats, is the % chance the same?
Also, go for 200 or 600 radiation for the next quest?

You can, but then you'll see your mediocre walking animation, and have trouble seeing smaller objects to pick up. You can actually zoom the camera in or out, so you can play 3rd person, or isometric, although it's basically unplayable in isometric.

If the gear is a Unique based off a similar gun, say, the Terrible Shotgun, you can repair it using the Combat Shotgun. Really unique guns, like Lincoln's Repeater (fuck do I love that gun) have the exact problem you mention.
I switch between the two - FPS for more precise real time kills, picking up items, traversing through indoor areas and hallways (camera gets in the way sometimes) I play a lot of the game in third person though and have gotten used to the poor animations. I love seeing my character and switching up his garb!
It's unbelievable how much this game is crashing right now. I'm in that Big City or whatever the fuck it's called, and as soon as I take a couple of steps inside any building there (like the one with that Bitter/Buttercup-something chick), the game completely freezes and I have to alt-tab out and quit it there.
MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF ASSCRAP-CODED GAME ARGH
Now that I vented my anger, is there ANYONE that might have an idea on stuff that might cause this? Any kind of help is greatly appreciated:
Vista Business x64 SP1
GeForce 9800GTX with the latest non-beta drivers, NOT overclocked
X-Fi Fatal1ty with the latest x64 drivers
Core 2 Quad Q9450, NOT overclocked
It's the only game that is crashing on this PC, and it's fucking annoying. If anyone can point me to any potential topics on another forum, that would be swell. Hilfe!
Biggest difference between the Collectors Edition and the Standard Edition Strategy guides is the hardbound cover. The extras in the CE are barely worth it, it is only 30 pages and it is the same non glossy pages as well. The hardback looks nice though and the guide overall is pretty good.
Beat the game last night. I played a good character, and made it to Lv 19 before completing it.
Impressions (spoilers):
The whole lead up to the end was great, what with the giant fucking robot basically destroying every damn thing in its path on the way to Project Purity. I managed to talk Colonel Autumn out of his plan, so that was neat. But then, the whole thing where you die/let Lyons die? It was just so...abrupt. It didn't really affect me, if that makes any sense. It's like the game had this really high standard of decision-making throughout the entire game, and the final one just rather fell on its face. Oh well, it didn't ruin the game for me or anything, but still.
Now, I'm playing through as a Melee/Unarmed Evil character. Killed/knocked out everyone in Vault 101, and then just destroyed
Megaton
, and also, WTF at Moira
being a ghoul?
:lol :lol :lol
Went with:
S: 8
P: 5
E: 7
C: 5
I: 5
A: 7
L: 4
(I think...)
Also, for those that are having questions about having a bed if you're a neutral/evil character,
blowing up Megaton unlocks a safehouse at Tenpenny Tower

The % is just in vats. For things like rifles, there doesn't seem to be any sort of hit%. If you fire while aiming at their hand, you will hit their hand.
Some of the other guns will obviously be less accurate though. But for sniping, I never use vats because in real time you can guarantee headshots.
Also, the hit% in vats seems to only be talking about that specific body part. So like if you have an 80% chance to hit them in the head, that doesn't mean you have a 20% to miss them completely, because a 'miss' might mean hitting them in the chest instead.

I beat the game, but it definitely crashed a ton on me. I still don't have a fix, but it was pretty random. Could happen after 15 minutes, or 4 hours, but it seemed to mostly happen when I was entering VATS or interacting with an item.

I never use vats with the sniper, I just target their chest and they usually die with one hit. I'm not sure how the hit is calculated as far as %wise but I think it's just up to how good you can aim when the scope is moving...too bad you cant hold your breath. And yeah it's nice it does not set off the other patrols when you kill them, kinda noobish but game is hard enough.
Only bad thing about the sniper is that it wears down quickly and it's really expensive to repair, guess it depends on your skills and bartering etc.
I signed into Live, it updated the game, restarted itself and i've played for an hour or so with no issues but then i haven't had any problems up until now anyway.
If I wanted to get achievements for this game is there something I have to do specifically for GFWL? Whenever I open the game on my PC it says I am "signed in", but I haven't seen any achievement pop ups and I think I would have by now.
They appear at the top off the screen for me, together with any other live anouncements and i find i don't really notice them pop up. When you sign in have a look there as it will list what achievements you have for the game. You get them quite early on, i know you get one for going outside.

Are you signed in as your GT on Live? I think it will make a generic tag for you based on your username when you log into windows, which does not get achievements.

That might be it. I might not have an actual gamertag since I don't have a 360. I think it is just my windows live ID. So can I make a gamertag if I am PC only?

Thanks guys on the vats question. I'm going to go for headshots from now on. I did have to repair the sniper rifle, 230 caps I think. I'll make a note on how long that lasts and compare the costs. I'm using regular guns for animals and ants and saving the sniper for people, that should be a good balance.
For those of you that invested in sneak and/or lockpicking, up to what point do you recommend putting points in? At what point is it not worth it to invest more in these categories?

Yes, you can do it in game by selecting Live at the main menu and following the prompts. I believe it will say Join Live, and then create a silver account.
I'm 8 hours in and it seems to me like something's missing from this game. And I love Oblivion to this day.
There's way too much time spent underground following train tracks, and after emerging there are a LOT of places where you are further funneled along by virtue of collapsed buildings and so on. This is not only in opposition to the very idea of an open-world game, it's also very frustrating as you spend too much time backtracking. At this point it feels the same as it would if you had to get to each of the big towns in Oblivion by navigating one of the underground ruins. Maybe it opens up further in the future (and allows you to stay above ground, out of the bland, confusing tunnels).
My biggest complaint by far though is the gun combat. Earlier I was standing 4 feet away from a guy, shot 14 bullets at his chest and missed each time. I know this is based on skill, but a certain base skill should be assumed, let's say...what my mother could do in real life? Then there's the fact that I can shoot a guy six times in the head with VATS to little effect. I mean...even GoldenEye had headshots. And with the inaccuracy already present in this games' aiming, especially further than 15 feet or so away, I daresay that including headshots wouldn't unbalance it. To say these issues are frustrating me is an understatement.

Only the DC area really suffers from funneling underground that I've found. I've wandered overland quite a bit getting distracted finding new landmark after new landmark. There's also something kind of pleasing about getting lost in the subway system only to pop up in a completely new area to explore.
As far as the gun combat, I haven't found it to be THAT inaccurate. Yes, it's skill based. No, your mother probably could not fire 14 bullets into someone's chest even at a distance of 4 feet. Recoil alone would cause issues. Bump up the skill and you'll be hitting more often than not. That's the idea of an RPG.
As for 6 headshots not killing something? Are you using a BB gun? It takes 3 shots to the head max to kill anything I've found. Remember there is such a thing as head armor.
I've had a couple "WTF AI" moments, but this one takes the cake:
I
SHOT MY DAD
in the face THREE TIMES and he didn't turn hostile, no one else around us reacted, and HE didn't react. His dialogue choices were exactly the same.
Another time I knocked the capital presevation society guy the fuck out. He got up like 10 seconds later and wasn't afraid of me... just kept walking around.
