No crashes here so far, played it for atleast 10 hours. Seen one bug, but thats it.

My mate has a pirated version, and he got huge issues with it, crashes and freezes a ton, and has very low framerates :p I dont really feel for him there though ;)

I definitely don't have a pirated copy, bought the game two days ago. The game simply is unstable on a lot of computers (according to the Beth forums), including mine. A true pain in the ass.

Game runs like a dream on my PC. Perfect 60 fps, very minimal loading, and no crashing.

However, from what I've read, it's a very temperamental piece of software that could potentially have issues on any random PC. There's also this problem with framerate stuttering that will occur on ALL PCs unless you change a value in the fallout.ini file. Problem is, this change only works if you're PC can hold 60 fps 100% of the time. If your framerate ever drops below 60 fps, the game will run in slow motion. Fortunately, my GTX260 has no troubles doing just that, but a 8800GT in another machine couldn't quite handle it and they were forced to stick to the default stuttering mode (which many will not notice, but I found annoying as hell).

Think I'm going to wrap up the main quest (heading towards a vault now) at aroudnd 34 hours in. I'm level 16 and been doing mostly sidequests/exploring. I think I'm going to save the rest of the stuff for my next build. Even though with the way the quests are there's really a few ways to do each anyway, I'd like some surprises.

I'm 8 hours in and it seems to me like something's missing from this game. And I love Oblivion to this day.

There's way too much time spent underground following train tracks, and after emerging there are a LOT of places where you are further funneled along by virtue of collapsed buildings and so on.

I felt this way during the first few main story missions which raised doubts, but that quickly changed. I've done minimal exploring but the
northwest
was wide open. Only DC has a lot of tunnels.

Combat can be frustating at times as it *seems* like I miss a lot but in actuality i'm hitting a lot.

Mmm thats interesting - well I'm running 8800GT's in an SLi with a Intel 2.4GHz Quad core thats overclocked. I'd imagine I will be able to do 60 fps 100% of the time so i'll definitely have to change that ini file then?

Thanks guys on the vats question. I'm going to go for headshots from now on. I did have to repair the sniper rifle, 230 caps I think. I'll make a note on how long that lasts and compare the costs. I'm using regular guns for animals and ants and saving the sniper for people, that should be a good balance.

For those of you that invested in sneak and/or lockpicking, up to what point do you recommend putting points in? At what point is it not worth it to invest more in these categories?
sneak I'm planning to take up all the way. I love sneaking.

As for locking picking, you want to be able to reach 75 total via skill, equipment you can temporarily wear, etc.

75 will let you unlock everything except "very hard" and in my experience, equipment and such is almost never hidden behind a very hard lock. Very hard seems reserved for areas that have multiple solutions. Like you can have 100 lockpick OR you can find a key or find an alternate route.

Whereas locks <=75 tend to be item caches with good equipment. So I would only max lockpick if you want to be able to use it "sequence break."

There's way too much time spent underground following train tracks, and after emerging there are a LOT of places where you are further funneled along by virtue of collapsed buildings and so on. This is not only in opposition to the very idea of an open-world game, it's also very frustrating as you spend too much time backtracking. At this point it feels the same as it would if you had to get to each of the big towns in Oblivion by navigating one of the underground ruins. Maybe it opens up further in the future (and allows you to stay above ground, out of the bland, confusing tunnels).

My biggest complaint by far though is the gun combat. Earlier I was standing 4 feet away from a guy, shot 14 bullets at his chest and missed each time. I know this is based on skill, but a certain base skill should be assumed, let's say...what my mother could do in real life? Then there's the fact that I can shoot a guy six times in the head with VATS to little effect. I mean...even GoldenEye had headshots. And with the inaccuracy already present in this games' aiming, especially further than 15 feet or so away, I daresay that including headshots wouldn't unbalance it. To say these issues are frustrating me is an understatement.

I think I've only traveled through the subway system four times over 14 hours I've played so far... twice was purely for quests. Once you visit a location you can fast travel to it, and once you clear out one of those tunnels it stayed cleared out for a long long time (maybe forever?). Even when traveling through them though, unless you're actually performing some higher task (like pillaging the supply rooms or doing a quest down there) you can get through them in a matter of a couple of minutes - it's nothing like Hellgate: London for example.

As for the gun combat, it's an RPG. Why in Final Fantasy when I bury my brand new 10ft long sword into the side of a wolf's head doesn't seizure or die instantly? Shouldn't it's eyeballs explode when I cast Lightning on it or shouldn't it catch on fire and welt away to a skeleton the instant it makes contact with my fire ball?

As much as you'd like to kill every creature and NPC in the game with your 5 damage starter pistol by only shooting them two or three times in the chest it would be horribly horribly imbalancing... why would you ever upgrade your weapon if a gun that cost 10 caps and fires bullets that cost a third of a cap could kill everything with a couple seconds of "mom aiming". That being said your weapons get better with your skill, I still kill raiders sometimes with my 10mm pistol (though using it over a 50 damage combat shotgun seems silly).

Is it true that after you beat the main quest. You cant play after?

that is correct, after completion of the last quest the credits roll and it's over. all you have is your last autosave

Minor spoilers regarding the Shoot 'Em In The Head quest:
Tenpenny is dead. Roy killed him a while ago, and he put his body in the basement of Tenpenny tower, which I have no idea the location of. It's not on either side of the door they attack from, or the room with the control panel.

After I gave him the last key, I followed him on foot for the entire trek to Fort Constantine. It took him like 40 minutes, as he would stop and magnum every fucking cockroach that walked by. (He'd also actually inject into his leg when he used stimpacks, which is amazing.)

Anyways. I thought he'd go to Tenpenny's body, he didn't. I followed him for the better part of an hour, just to have him go hostile on me like a block in front of the fort. I killed him and took the three of four keys he was carrying... only used one, on the door to get to the bomb launch.
What the hell are the other ones for, and where is
Tenpenny's
body?

A few people have mentioned that the explosives skill isn't very useful. Might want to rethink that one.

I would love to have a good PC setup and I can afford it but just can't drop the dollars for it since its just going to be obsolete sooner rather than later. This is why I'd settle for the scaled down console version. I'd settle for stable 30 fps.

So what's the consensus ... 360 or PS3? Saw a videogamer.com comparison and they both looked and played the same. Think the differences are so minor that it doesn't matter what version you go with.

I just got raped by a Deathclaw while exploring the Northern section of the Wasteland. What the fuck is it? It looked like the devil :lol

General consensus seems to be PC > 360 > PS3, and the PC/360 versions are the only versions getting DLC. I'm not done with the game yet, but I can't wait to see what they're going to do with the dlc for this game.

I hear the PS3 version has some issues. Plus there's
exclusive DLC lined up for the 360 and PC versions..

I got raped by one in the same area. Fucker has a lot of health and hits hard. I find these guys and mirelurks as the only tough enemies.

Is there any way to store your stuff somewhere? Like in a footlocker? Buy a house?

In Oblivion you had to buy a house. Learned this the hard way causeI stored some stuff in a footlocker and it got reset.

Disarm the
bomb in Megaton and then talk to Simms, he'll give you the keys to an unused apartment which will become your Megaton House. If you blew up the town then you have to do something at Tenpenny Tower. I haven't done that myself so not sure exactly.

You get a house in Metagon if you disarm the bomb.

Yup, except for Mirelurk Kings, those guys are so easy compared to their lesser brethren.

Man, I'm an idiot. I didn't active Windows Live, so when I do get around to activating it I discover that I'd have to start a NEW character (and I'd invested 40 hours into the one I have). Ugh. So I've been playing for 40 hours with no chance of getting any achievements.

Simms is the black cherif, right? He's dead, I snitched on the guy who offered me to blow up Megaton. The cherif went to arrest him and the fucker resisted and killed him, then I killed the dude. Still have to disarm the bomb as my explosives aren't high enough. I'll check if I looted a key from the cherif's corpse. Probably gonna blow it up after I helped that annoying girl finish her book. She's annoying but she has some cool stuff

Dude you get a better suite in tenpenny tower (armed btw) if you blow megaton up it's what I did no regrets...except blowing up Jericho lol

edit---god damn yeah I hate mirelurks...like 3 of them coming at you, where are you supposed to shoot them their face is so small!

His son will give you the keys after you disarm the bomb. You should have some mentats with you, use them and then try to disarm the bomb. I had the exact same problem until someone told me to use mentats. Let me know if that works for you.

This x 1000.

I don't know how far I am into the game (not that far on the main quest but doing plenty of side quests) but my character just hit level 11 and I am starting to feel pretty bad ass and very efficient in combat. Doesn't mean I don't ever get owned if I'm not smart about how I play, but the enemies I've been coming across haven't really been much of an issue.

Super Mutants, SM Brutes, Centaurs, Protectrons, Raiders, Brotherhood Outcasts, Ghouls, wild animals all go down pretty easy with my hunting rifle at long range. I usually sneak until I'm about the 50% hit range and then go for sneak attacks and criticals. Even if I don't get a critical, I can usually put a hurtin' or even kill enemies in 1 "turn" with my hunting rifle.

At mid-range, I switch over to my Chinese AR, and at close range, it's combat shottie.

Love the combat and VATS in this game.

Thanks, I forgot I could use that! I have a whole stash of those on me, I think. Maybe there are some explosive ones too.

all I can say Is I'm realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly glad I handled the Tenpenny Tower quest in a way that got me the
ghoul mask
. That thing has come in so fucking handy it's not even funny. I hate those damn feral ghouls.

And, I have run out of lockpicks. Any idea where a good stash might be?

You'll find them randomly, just like all other equipment in the game. 1 here, 2 there. The only place I recall coming across them with any consistency is in first aid kits. They'll contain 1-3 with semi-regularity, it seems.

Any idea on where I can use the Tenpenny Armament Key?
I've looked everywhere and unless I already stole it, I can't find it.. :(

Edit:
Nevermind, found it..it was a locker outside...

Hope you guys don't mind me posting a few more screenshots.

Awesome. I haven't found that location yet, so I'll begin searching.

if you want to know, it's (location/strategy spoiler)
in the south western portion of the map, pretty even with Megaton's location but further west. It's sunk in a canyon so the only way you can get in is through their entrance which is heavily guarded. I recommend going up behind the settlement on the canyon walls and just carefully hopping down so you don't die. This way you can snipe many of the guards because there is a LOT of resistance here.

Naw, you just have to do a lot of acts of good to make up for it.

I've been 'Very Evil' on the Karma meter, and have come back from it. I am just today getting back into the 'Good' category; basically had to go around giving out water for free, and defending towns and rescuing people.

Also picked the Lawbringer perk, so killing certain people nets me positive karma as well.

I still go around lockpicking/hacking/stealing certain items owned by others which gives me some negative karma. But that stuff is small potatoes and doesn't set you back that much.

Anyway, you can always change your Karma. I have been all over the scale and am trying to get back to Very Good. ^____^

I think i used the mentats and the 101 labcoat in order to do what you're attempting. So if mentats aren't enough, wear the labcoat to give you an extra bonus.

Been playing the game for a few hours, wasn't into it much at first but I'm liking it a lot more now that I'm out of the vault. Is there any way I can change my hairstyle after leaving the vault? I don't like how these mutton chops clip through the sides of my motorcycle helmet.

Also, no matter how much I mess around with the character creation at the beginning, for some reason my guy always ends up looking like Michael Keaton.

When you get your house in Megaton (or somewhere else, I don't know) there will be a service robot that can change your haircut.

I couldn't get into Oblivion no matter how hard I tried, but after the little time I've been playing I think Fallout is going to be different.
