The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Ok, How do I get into Rivet City? I cant seem to find an entrance.
When you fast travel to Rivert City, it puts your character on a steel ledge right? Search for an intercom on that level to speak with a guard, he will swing the bridge around for you.

Dear Rivet City,

Looks like living in an impenetrable fortress of steel turns everyone into a dick!

All the best,

Yes, I suppose that the miserable inhabitants of Rivet City are part of the irony itself. Sure everyone is safe from death and the like, but who cares when you're submerged in a miserable atmosphere. Their very safety leading to hubris and a general distaste when it comes to outsiders.

Maybe.

Best use of HDR i've seen in a game, i like the way it changes depending on which part of the world you're located, nice touch.
Damn, that's awesome. Oblivion had the worst HDR ever.

Man... this game is so ridiculously good looking on so many levels.

It's a shame their animations are so completely off then...

better walking animations, better attack animations, and definetly better talking animations required. Stiff manikin pose infront of the camera is really boring.

This is probably the wrong (i.e. biased :P) thread to ask this in, but...I really wasn't interested in this game (I thought there were GAF impressions that it was just some random buggy RPG shooter with autoaim). But looking through the thread, I'm getting a lot of really good impressions, and a KOTOResque (also somewhat HL2esque and STALKEResque) feel...I understand this is more of an action game than the KOTOR ones, but can anyone give me an idea of whether I might like it, given that I like action/adventure/RPG/shooter games like KOTOR, Prince of Persia, HL2, and so forth?

Oh it's you.

Just buy it, you won't be disappointed. Probably your GOTY.

So I really wasn't planning on picking this game up because everyone kept saying how similar it is to Oblivion. I tried to play Oblivion 3 times but just couldn't get into it. Overall it was just a very below-average experience for me. Well, I was really itching for an RPG to play so I decided to get Fallout 3, mainly because the setting really interested me. I will just say that this is one of the best games I have played in a long time. Approximately 20 hours of play time and I have barely progressed in the main story.

My main problems with Oblivion were the painfully generic fantasy setting with absolutely no personality, the weightless melee combat (It honestly didn't even feel like you were hitting enemies half the time), the character models (especially faces), which apparently they reused in this game as the Super Mutants, the "enemies level with you" system, which rendered the leveling system pretty much worthless, and the endless copy/pasted dungeons.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that Fallout 3 fixed every one of these problems for me. Although the dungeons in FO3 are still relatively samey, there are less of them and they are larger in size. I really can't put this game down.. sooooo gooood.

So basically what I'm trying to say is... if there's anyone who isn't giving this game a second look because they despised Oblivion, you owe it to yourself as a gamer to at least rent it.

Exactly the same for me, except the FO3 "dungeons" don't feel the same and I only tried oblivion for about 30 minutes.
Incredible game.

Seriously, if you even have a hint of liking the setting this game is in, you will love this game.

I was afraid it would be something bad. :( I'm sorry. I haven't posted much in the PC thread in a really long time.

*edit*

Thanks Chespace. The $50 price tag is a bit much, but the fact that it's 20+ hours of gameplay with the promise of replay value may mean it's worth it (i.e. I don't wait for the price to go down :lol)

Thanks guys.

20 hours?

I've played like 15 and haven't done more than 30 minutes of the main quest :lol

I can see this at least being 30+ of FUN and ADVENTURE. No boring repetitive tasks or RPG grind, but taking in this vision of the Fallout universe.

Agreed. And on a side note, I absolutely hated oblivion but Fallout 3 has got me hooked.

Here are a couple of my screenshots.

I'm still not very far, but I just wanted to see what I looked like in a couple different outfits.

Here's my character holding up poor Deputy Weld.

Keep talking to them, you might change your mind. ^ MAJOR spoilers discussing quests: Those!, The Replicated Man, Moria's Survival Guide Chapter 3: Research Rivert City and backgrounds of Rivert City's residents. I would really caution against intents on letting your eyes feast upon the spoiler text unless you've completed all of those quests.

Only Sister, Zimmer and one other scientist pissed me off to no end. Zimmer's attitude isn't due to him being a resident of Rivert City, word is where he came from all of them are regular fucktards. The priest, Diego and Angela are pretty sweet, and Tammy's a bitch is more due to her backstory than Rivert City's fault. You can find Tammy's behavior in any social sphere, not just one founded on harsh conditions. You can even spend 25 caps to give a named female ex-slaver to buy a pistol for her own protection. She's just scared, and immediately shows gratitude upon your altruistic act.

Bannon is snobbish alright, and Pinkerton has good reason to hold the council in contempt. Vera is a good lass, she more than welcomes Bryan Wilks to stay with her once she has found out he lost his father and is homeless. You will get to see a kind side of Dr. Li during the main quest as well. As for Harkness :lol well, you must be real evil at heart not to feel sorry for him.

Rivert City is currently my favorite locate in Fallout 3. Possibly the most interesting characters in Fallout 3 are bunched together in this ...unique excuse for a town.

Just wanted to throw one more comment out there...ARGH GAME DEVELOPERS, WHY CAN'T YOU LET STEAM DO ITS JOB INSTEAD OF THROWING SECUROM ON TOP? GAH.

That said, Bethesda claims they only use it for a "disk check", right? :/ I still don't see why it's needed if you have Steam.

It's level 1 secureROM which is disc check.

I take it you bought it then? :D

Have fun and make sure to put 9/10 into INT and dump points into repair and small guns.

It still has issues if you've got Daemon tools installed or similar software. SecureRom released an updated game launcher for people having problems - it can be found on their website.

I'm starting to think it's impossible to ever finish this game. I spent four hours tonight trying to get from Megaton to
RobCo
, only to get sidetracked eighty-five times. Had to stop by
Girdershade for the Naughty Nightware quest thing
, then wound up stumbling across five or six other locations, up to and including
Vault 112, which I turned and ran away from immedately, since I don't want to sequence break the main story
.

When I thought I was done with that portion of the map and could finally get where I was going, I wound up stumbling across
Tenpenny Tower, and am now acting as some kind of Ghoul Rights Activist, alternately sweet-talking and strong-arming the residents to let the ghouls in.

Also, Bloody Mess? Never gets old.

Yeah, I just researched a bunch on it. I haven't bought it yet. But I did install Steam Warhead, and the only thing I can find on my system is some registry keys and a directory with the (presumably Warhead) key(s). I can't find any non-default kernel level drivers from Macrovision, or any ua service, etc. Is SecuROM a bit neutered on Vista, perhaps? If the Fallout 3 version checks for Daemon Tools something must be running (and indicates Bethesda is a bit deceptive, if not outright lying, on their blog). But, Bethesda also has the "just run setup.exe" workaround if you're having any SecuROM problems? One guy said he installed the Steam version and couldn't even get into the game without removing/disabling SecuROM.

ANYWAY, it isn't a big deal for me as long as it doesn't run another driver/service/program, and I'm lucky and my programs/hardware don't upset them, but I wish they'd just stick with Steam. I'm interested in SecuROM as a whole because there are a lot of upset claims about it, and I like to know detailed facts, how it runs, where it goes, and so forth.

Man, if you're anything like me, you'll get WAY more than 20 hours out of this. I'm at around 35 hours and I'm not even close to seeing everything. I've maxed my character, finished the game and am loaded with the most advanced weapons, armor, and vast sums of caps, and I'm still pretty daunted by all of the places I haven't been and quests I haven't finished.

Imagine what Bethesda could do if they used Bioware's facial animation technology? Mass Effect's is still the king for me....

Buy retail in this case imo. Steam is great, but if it comes down to having issues with mods later I know that would be a real deal breaker.

The secuROM is just a disk check AFAIK.

I've never heard of problems with Steam and mods. Details?

So far I've found three radio towers that I've activated and they all send out some morse-code radio signal in the immediate area.
I refuse to believe there isn't something more to this. The three towers I've found are all in the general mid-western area so to say, anyone found more of these in other parts of the map? Maybe something happens if you activate them all?

Blizzard said:

If its exe is encrypted or changed too much from the default retail exe, then script extenders which hook INTO the normal.exe won’t work, and most "advanced" oblivion mods used script extension to add more functionality to the engine for mod makers to utilize.

when I read that I had steam refund my fallout 3 preorder (you can only request that when a game is in preorder status, not after release, and then its still a case by case basis) and bought a retail version.

I actually thought Oblivion had some of the best HDR ever. The way the contrast instantly adjusts in the engine is a lot more realistic than the sllooooowww gradual adjustment in other games.

Fallout is even better in that regard. Mostly due to the sparse colors and contrast of the setting i suppose.

Can some one please give me directions to the

I've had one person say they can't explain it to me because I wouldn't understand (wtf?) and another told me it's across the trenches of the Museum of technology. Spent a fair bit of time looking with no luck. Help would be appreciated.

Inside the museum of history. Which is somewhere there in the area.

I kick back in my couch with wireless keyboard in lap and the mouse on a nearby pillow. It works great except I look like a lazy tool. :lol

If he just wanted a controller in his hand he could have done that with his pc too, so I'm still confused as to why he went for ps3. No offense to the ps3 meant.

Using the mouse on a pillow works well enough? I need to try this! I'd love to play fallout 3 from my awesome couch like a lazy bum too :lol

If anyone else is still within the first 10 hours of the game and finding the mutants to be a little too high with the firepower and the stimpaks a little low in suppy... I suggest visiting a place called "anchorage farms" on the river bank to rivet city. I picked up about 25 pieces of the crab meat and could of made off with more than that but my hacking and repair skills are too low to unlock the doors :(

Still, 25 pieces of meat at 20 health boost each is pretty good for a little dungeon(that has a bed inside so health is not a problem). You won't waste much ammo either, you can take them out with like a hunting rifle.

Nocebo said:

Yeah it works really well. Modern mice with their lasers are really forgiving as long as you pillow isn't totally white or something. Mine is light grey and it works great.

Or with the shishkabab! <3

56 hours and counting.

Walked outside Megaton tonight and right away I hear gunfire. Up ahead a giant scorpion is attacking two travelling traders and their brahmin. Deputy Weld is firing lasers at the scorpion, and there's a scout on a catwalk above the town's gate taking shots. The traders high tail it and make for safer ground, and so it's three of us attempting to destroy this creature. With its old prey off running, the scorpion makes for the robot. I glance back to the traders running and then the gunfire stops. Scorpion was dead for sure. Deputy Weld didn't make it.

Playing the PC version.. not digging the combat. :/ Not very impressed by that, in fact it feels annoying. But I'll keep going.

Love the game world though, the characters and design.

You'll warm up to it. VATS is absolutely wonderful and amazingly satisfying once you get a feel for it.

I'm level 8 with my small guns at 75...... Blowing heads off in one is joyous. I've got a price on my head and talon mercs attack me all the time, I usually blow all their heads off with one round of VATS.....

Sweet.

So I've been tinkering with a different way to play the game, and I think I've found it. First, turn the HUD completely off. Second, no fast travel. Third, only carry what you need (the armor you're wearing, a few caps, some stimpacks, and your weapon). Makes for a very interesting experience, as you have to rely more on sight and sound to survive.

This might be my new favorite game of all time. dead goddamned serious.

I felt the same way as well initially ...really had to displace the concept of Fallout 3 being a competent shooter. It's an RPG through and through. With that mindset, I'm enjoying it immensly more now
