The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Can anyone explain why alt-tabbing on my PC seems to temporarily fix the massive drop in framerate I get when using high-ish settings? I had the same problem with Company of Heroes except alt-tabbing in CoH fixed the choppiness until I closed the game. Here it fixes it for about 10 seconds and it begins again :(

Knock her out and drag the body around a bit? Might get her out of the loop.

Spoilers and question concerning the "You got to shoot em in the end" sidequest :
I think I broke the quest and I can't finish it.

So i took the quest from the ghoul in Underworld. I said yes, i would kill the guys for him. After that, I talked to numerous people in underworld that told me the guy was a crook, and the people he told me to kill are good people. So I went back and told him I wouldnt kill them anymore (exact line was something like "Fuck you ill keep the keys to myself"). So the guy starts shooting at me, and everyone in town also shoots at me. I came back numerous game days latter, and the town was ok with me but each time I get near to the guy, he shoot at me.

So I decided to go see the guys I need to kill, to end the quest another way. The 1st I saw was the guy in Rivet City. I have 100 speech so he gave me the key. Went back to give it to the dude in underworld, but he was still hostile.

So I went to tenpenny tower, talked to tenpenny about my situation, and tenpenny offers me 300 caps to kill the ghoul. At this point I thought it was a good way to end the quest, so I went and killed the Ghoul.

After that, the quest says "collect your prize from tenpenny". I went to tenpenny, but he keeps telling me to go kill the ghoul, even if I did it. So at this point I think I broke the quest system, and wont ever be able to get this achievement.

The only workaround Im thinking of, is to go see the other 2 guys I was suppose to kill at the beginning, but I have little hope.

Any idea how I can get out of this situation ?

If you have all three keys you can go get the really good stuff, the Cap reward is peanuts in comparison. You need to get to Fort Constantine, but without the map marker Crawley gives you it'll be a bitch. Find a map online to get you there. You get arguably the best power armor in the game there! Normally you have to complete the quest, follow him out inot the Museum and pop him there to get te keys back.

Yeah, Head of State glitch is broken for me thanks to a wandering NPC, and this can die so no knocking out for me. :(

So are there any glitches that stop you from finishing the game? Not being able to finish a quest would be sad, but I really hope Bethesda gets some fixes out if you can glitch your game unrecoverably (though I guess if you keep lots of saves you could just reload earlier?). I'm playing the PC version...

On a positive note, I watched most/all of the intro slides and am playing the game intro. I'm pretty sure I'm going to love it...there ARE a bunch of KOTOR-like elements. :D

Wow this game's good. Entering an abandoned store I actually felt like a survivor for the first time since Silent Hill 2 and the NPCs so far seem much more engaging than those in Oblivion. Sucks I'm not playing as much as I want, what with FIFA being addicting although I can't see myself going back to Fable 2 after this, just hasn't hooked me at all.

So I noticed as I was messing around a little bit that
killing Tenpenny gives you positive karma, and killing his security staff doesn't hurt at all.
Would I end up missing out on any significant sidequests if I do that
after I've already cast my lot with Megaton by disarming the bomb and living there?

Also another screenshot just because VATS is too much fun.

ScreenShot10.jpg

One of the things that Fallout 3 doesn't quite capture is, again, the morale dichotomy. Kill off the bad guys and you get good karma; kill of the good guys or innocents and you get bad karma. There is little room for morale ambiguity here, you're either gunning for one side or the other.

Anyway, I just discovered the story behind Megaton and hacked into Moriaty's terminal to discover his story, and his way of doing things.
I wish he was around for a longer time, since as a person motivated by profit, he has ripe potential to be a cool villain. He has the dirt on everyone who is a mover in Megaton. There's so much ammo for drama here, but unfortunately, Beth didn't really give him a worthy script...=/

On Big Guns, are the lot of them really that worthless? In my first play Fawkes was massacring everyone with his Gatling Laser, and I'm looking forward to initiating an assault on Deathclaw Sanctuary for Vengeance. Not worth the trouble?

While I haven't gotten anything quite gamebreaking, the game has crashed and glitched a fair number of times. When I was out in the
Republic of Dave
the textures kept flashing around, and wandering around in one of the vaults I fell through the floor and the game locked up. Twice leading
Doctor Li away from the Jefferson Memorial
the game froze during the VATS animation.

:D I've played very little, definitely looks good so far. The only annoying thing is that, like the Tomb Raider demo, the camera is kind of jumpy with mouse control. I could try the 360 controller, but I think I'll stick with mouse+keyboard for this game...

*edit*

Oh, I'm playing at 1680x1050 fullscreen...I think I'm doing 8x on both the sampling/AA settings. The game isn't INCREDIBLY realistic (I get the impression it looks more like half-life 2?), but I appreciate that it doesn't take a ton of memory, has FAST loading times, and doesn't even appreciably heat up my 4850 on mostly "ultrahigh" settings.

If I remember right, Li doesn't open the door. You need to talk to the Brotherhood Knight to the right of the door.

Once I get outside, the framerate is a little jerkier I think, sometimes. :( What's the best tool to check it? FRAPS?

Also, :lol :lol :lol at the animations, and specifically the jump time in this game. It's like jumping on the moon (probably to make it easier to jump on stuff).

Fraps is always nice.

I'm surprised your character looks female. Congratulations. :lol

It only gets way better from there on.

So I finally
repaired the Galaxy News Radio dish
, and was sort of shocked to look at my save and realize I'm now twenty-eight hours into the game.

I apparently spent a lot more time wandering around aimlessly than I thought.

Also, question about the results of the Tenpenny Towers quest:
I chose to get the residents to agree to let the ghouls move in; a few I had to threaten out, but in the end Tenpenny agreed to let them live there.

Only, Three Dog later reported that the solution to the problem involved the slaughter of everyone living there. Is that true? Because then the ghouls totally wasted my non-violent, Gandhi-like approach!

Currently looking for "The Family" ...along the way I had my first encounter with a Super Mutant!
Dude was living in the back of a truck. He spotted me and ran out with his fucking Rocket Launcher "GAARRRGGH!!!" :lol

Managed to take him down though :D

Oh and count me as someone who also isn't crazy about the overworld score that plays throughout. Sounds too much like Oblivion. When you venture into structures like the SuperMart and such, the music is much better though ...more of a tribal/creepy flavor ala Fallout1/2

I listen to the radio while I play ;) classic tunage :)

I've played the game with the music off since leaving the vault. Hearing the wind howling or some gunfire way off in the distance and out of sight seems to be way better than an overlaying score.

So I was wandering around down in the southwest corner of the map, seeing what locations I could unlock. I happened upon a campground and found the Deathclaw plans. Ok, cool, now all I need is the hand of the mythical Deathclaw. Shrugging my shoulders, I walked out and traveled further up into the mountains. I see a red blip on my compass. Thinking it's just a Mole Rat or some such, I lazily pull my Chinese Assault Rifle out and wait.

Closer it comes, up over the ridge I see a blurred, earthen-brown shape. The shape of SATAN! A fanged, taloned beast from the pits of Hell roars up over a rock, its elongated neck supporting a head resembling that of a Triceratops, only one twisted by some mad god from beyond time. Its long, articulated legs carried it over the ground in giant, ground-eating strides. Before I had time to pull the trigger, it was upon me.

In a great, doubled-handed swipe, it ripped my head from my shoulders, which tumbled end over end in a spray of blood, to fall at the foot of a twisted tree, its bare branches seeming to withdraw from the savagery on display before it. The devil beast sniffed at my oozing corpse as I awaited the loading screen... creating a Deathclaw weapon would have to wait for another day.

These stories are as good as the game - keep em coming! :D

Anyone know how to use the

"FOOD+WATER SANITISER"?

you get it from the woman in megaton and it does fuck all? It did purify some water when I got it but nothing since.

will have to try this ....I certainly turned it off for Far Cry 2 and it really did add that much more

Regarding the guy on the loud speaker in Seward Sq.
Is there some trick to this encounter? Can you prevent him from killing himself?

Is there any way to view something like a manual? Like, for looking up things like DR and WG. I've figured those out, though...

WG is weight, you should've figured that out as soon as you got overencumbered from grabbing too much stuff. DR is the damage/armor whatever.

Between Fawkes and Jericho, I'm giving the thumbs up to Fawkes. Going through the DC area with both, it is clear Fawkes is the winner - he can take on 5~6 Super Mutants solo while Jericho dies easily from being flanked by Brutes and Masters from all sides. The only shitty thing about Fawkes is good characters get him so late in the main quest. But that's not a fair comparison, Jericho is better than Cross as he kills faster with his AR.

I think I need to make a trip to Paradise Falls and tell Jericho to take a hike.

its that "shoot them in the head" quest,
after you gave the keys to that Ghoul, he went to Fort Constantine, and somewhere in the tunnel to the main bomba storage, there is an office with a computer where you could launch the ICBM
....

Alright guys! Rate out of 10 my failure!

I just saved after entering a bunker in DC where two super mutants (one with the minigun and another with a melee weapon) are hanging around. The bunker itself is like a corridor and they are at the opposite side, so of course I can leave the bunker easily, but I want to get everything that's inside it.

The problem? I have 1 bar of life, which is around... 5HP or something around that? Lol!

I also have 6 frag grenades and I can kill the super mutant with the melee weapon easily, but the other mutant just kills me every time before I can kill him with the grenades :(

I will keep trying later, I refuse going back to any safe are before killing those two guys!.

Chiggs' ini. He tweaked it using Oblivion .ini settings, since it's the same engine and many of the commands are identical.

I changed uGrids from 9 to 7 since it was too much of a hamper on my FPS outside, but everything else I left the same.

OMG! I used this ini and the jump in graphical quality is amazing!! I had set the game on ultra already, but this makes it look....woooow! And what's more: I had to play in windowed mode because of crashing issues and with the tweaked ini I can play fullscreen again without crasing!

How did you find this ini file anyway? I can't seem to find it in google.

It's a passive skill, automatically reduces the rads you take from any food or water, took me ages to figure out as well, if you drop it and pick it up again you'll see the message appear.

Can't you just lower the difficulty setting in the menu?

*Really* disappointed that 20 is the level cap. I dont understand why they did this? Ive done probably 1 third of the game and Im at 19.5 level.

Me no understand.

Because shut up that's why.

Anyway, the original games had a level cap around 24 or so as well. They didn't want you to be so powerful you can breeze through everything. I am maxed out and still have several quests to do, but I think it was a good idea. Exploration is still incentive enough for me to keep playing.

I hope the expansion content has stuff designed to really challenge level 20s.

There's a few reasons but to me the main reason is because of DLC we'll be seeing later.

I imagine that not only will we see a raise of the cap by say 5 levels for every decent expansion but a few new perks as well.

How shitty would it be if the game gave you a cap at say 50 (usually the maximum for WRPGs) and then unloaded new perks that you couldn't access?

voltron said:
In case anyone was wandering, you cant do active reloads in Fallout 3. Ive tried 3 times now, and each time, no dice.

What do you mean by active reloads? Do you mean reloading your weapon whenever you choose, as opposed to having it reloaded automatically? If so, you can do that by holding the "draw weapon" button. Tapping the button draws or holsters your weapon; holding it will reload it.

Actually I was hoping that it would be raised for DLC, so Im glad others are thinking about that too. Means it could be true. (Have they talked about expansions yet?) I just think it should have been 30 not 20. I got here a bit too quick IMO.

Was just a joke dude. I was expressing my frustration at the amount of games atm, as I go from Gears 2 back to Fallout and vice versa.
