The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

He'll also pick up any weapons he comes across. We ran afoul of raiders and he looted them for their guns. I really liked it because he ran all the way, so I never felt it was a tedious trip.
He picked up a knife! Wouldn't touch their guns :lol

Finally picked this bastard up. I'll tell you guys what I thought after I remove all the... 7 Gamestop price stickers off the case.

edit: OMG I'm a rugrat!

How do I play this game? How do I follow my objectives? How to I keep track of my objectives? How to I know what objectives I'm doing? How do I know where to go?

I'm in the wasteland with the huge bomb in the middle of the city, and some dude who has spoken with 'dad' is asking for 300 capps. He is the owner of a hotel. Where do I get 300 capps? He originally asked for 100 capps, but I didn't have anything.

Serious question: Is this your first RPG?

You need to get a frag grenade, then crouch down, sneak up behind him and pick pocket him. Move the frag grenade from your inventory to his and then press done.

He'll freak the fuck out and tell you all he knows.

well the game is about free exploration...it's not a first person shooter, which has been heavily stressed. you gotta talk to people and find other sidequests so you can earn caps so you can pay off people for information in the main quest...just walk around and discover stuff and you'll get it.

on a sidenote, this game focuses much more on self-guided exploration than oblivion did, where you always knew where to go. im enjoying that aspect of it though.

Access your Pipboy and go to Data. Under Data, you'll find Quests and World Map. The World Map should tell you where to go based on the active quest. You can change which quest is active in the Quests screen.

When you're playing the game, under your HP you'll notice a compass. Use that to navigate the Wasteland. When a quest is active, you'll see an arrow (highlighted or empty depending on whether or not you've been to the place that is your objective) underneath the compass/HP bar if you're heading in the right direction.

I think you can ask to do a favor for him in which you leave Megaton and find this woman hiding in a house in a nearby town (Springsville, I think). She'll give you the 300 caps if you agree to tell Moriarty that she is dead.

Or you can always hack Moriarty's computer in the middle of the night when no one is looking. You need a Science stat of 50 to do this, though. Not sure if Mentants (an item) would help push your stat over the edge or not. Depends on how you distributed your stats.

Or I think you can just pickpocket Moriarty and take his computer's password from him.

Both of these last two options cost your karma, though.

Its story and UI sure. Both need better shooting gameplay and more sidequest variety

I'm straight ballin' right now.

I let the Ghouls take over Tennpenny Tower and raided their fucking stash. So I lost no Karma and came up on some mini nukes, about 4000 caps, missles, the whole shabang. It was hilarious too, I got a feral ghoul face mask. So now they won't attack me. :D

This game is fucking amazing.

Oh, btw;

So badass.

Goddamn it Amazon, I paid you the moneys on Black Friday, now make with the game already. Supposed to be here.

So... stats. I want a good melee build.

Can anyone tell me if going over 10 Strength with Power Armor gives you any benefit (like in Fallout: Tactics) or not (like in Fallout and Fallout 2)?

I've heard that the best Power Armor'll do is give you +2 Str, and Bobbleheads exist to +1 all the stats, so I'm thinking 7 strength, then as high an agility and endurance as possible, then after that I'm not sure. Probably a 5-6 luck.

I also think I want to jack up the difficulty setting.

Any tips?

I'm thinking Melee Weapons, Sneak, and Big Guns for tags. Maybe Explosives instead. Someone said Repair is pretty crucial for all builds, too.

I liked high Charisma in FO2 and FO:T, but only one party member in this game, so I'm not sure how much of a benefit you can get from high Cha.

^^ Intelligence effects the amount of points you get at level up, which is pretty important so I would put emphasis on that. I got my Luck up to 9 because... well... it always worked for me in Fallout 1 & 2. Criticals make life oh so much easier.

Luck 9 was important if you wanted Slayer or Sniper to truly rock. Though I've heard there is no Slayer or Sniper perk this outing. :(

Did they bother with the "If Intelligence is less than 3, you am talk like this?" thing? FO2 did it better than FO did.

Why bother with putting luck at nine with the Ranger Armor and the lucky 8 ball? The only reason people go 9 on int is because they can run to rivet city and get the bobblehead for max skill points...

Also you have plenty of dead levels to pick the intensive training perk

You're certainly not someone who'll complain about games holding your hand too much anytime soon.

it's two diferent games!

You must give it time to learn the game before you freak out, and come to neogaf ask stupid questions, making you a stupid person. And you don't want to be a stupid person, do you?

A question regarding second playthrough or those who went the evil route the first time:
How does being evil effect the main quest? I imagine you still have to help your dad start Project Purity and run errands with him, but I don't want the good karma. How does it play being eeeeeeevil?

I finally got to Rivet City, but it was hard as balls to do so... first time I got stuck in Grayditch and then I ended up doing the ant quests. I killed (and had multiple ants frenzy so they'd kill each other) all the guardians but it still keeps telling me to kill all 5. Really annoying... anyone know if there is a way I'll ever be able to finish the quest? Will it finally give me credit when I find a home for him?

I'm definitely interested in this game, but I've never really played any RPG games other than Mass Effect. I found it easy to keep track of my objectives and what not in that game, but having a bit of trouble here. The radar doesn't even function properly here.

This probably the second RPG game I have ever played. ME being the first of course. So cut me some slack :{

Ok, wait....what you do is kill all the ants in the main part of the town. Then at the far back of the town, you go underground where you will fight more ants. Eventually you will come to a researcher guy (cant remember name) who wants you to go into the main nest and take out the 5 guardians so he can go in there unharmed to do more research.

Once in the nest, battle and kill the 5 guardians, and avoid harming the queen for extra points. You should then get notified that you completed the part on killing the guardians and not harming the queen. Go back to the researcher and talk to him again and hell reward you. Leave that area then go back to the little capsule in town where the kid is hiding and offer to find him a home. Go to the other location where he says his relative is, and talk to her. Then go back and get the kid from his house and tell him he can go the lady. That should end the quest...

My own question....

Doing the Blood Quest mission...

I went to Arefu and talked to the old dude who made me go in the houses looking for the other people. I found the dead ones.

Im now supposed to look for someone named Ian, or the rest of the family, and I cant find them!!!!

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I too am doing a melee bruiser once my rootin-tootin-shootin Gamma Judy retires from active duty.

You've got the right of it stat-wise. Starting with 7 Strength is good enough because Brotherhood of Steel Power Armour and the very easy to obtain Strength Bobblehead will bring you to 10 and the stats (according to the guide) don't receive bonii beyond that point.

Skill-wise I would mix them up a bit more if I were you. Tagging Science and Lockpick might offend your leg-breaking sensibilities but you are going to get mighty pissed when almost all of the computers and locked items are denied to you because you don't even have 25. So start the game with those two tagged, they will be around 30 or 32, and you are going to need to get both of them to 50 minimum as soon as you can spare the points.

Tag melee as your third, and even then Small Guns and Speech are going to be crying a bit. You are not going to find much in the way of Big Guns for the first few levels anyway. Plus one of the only good skill boosting Perks is Size Matters, which gives you a +15 bonus to Big Guns, whereas most other perks give +5 to two skills, which many rightly believe isn't worth it.

Mass Effect is one of my favorite games this generation.

However...

Fallout 3 >>>>> Mass Effect

Yep! I agree too. I played Mass Effect all the way through three times. I rarely play a game more than once, and Fallout 3 is still better for me.

Just finished Fallout 3 on my first play through a few days ago. Now I've set it aside to play Fable II and Gears, both of which have been collecting dust. Now both of which are not stacking up to Fallout. Fable seems like a shallow RPG in comparison, and in Gears, I keep wanting to search through all the desks, cabinets, and wastebaskets. :lol

The radar (I assume you're referring to the compass) works exactly like it should, what do you mean? Also, you objectives are clearly stated in the "quests" section of your pip-boy and the next location is marked on your map. How much simpler could it be?

Researcher flipped out and ended up dying while I was killing the guardians unfortunately. I killed all 5 and completely looted their corpses, but the game never checked off that box for whatever reason. So am I ever going to be able to 'finish' that quest? I did it without harming the queen and then set off the intercharge or whatever. The kid says his relative is in Rivet City where I am now, just gotta find her...
Has anyone else encountered this bug?

On the compass in the game there are usually several "mini triangles" in addition to the one's marking your main objective and your optional mark that you plant yourself. What are they?

Places appearing as marks on the minimap. If the little triangle is empty, you haven't been to that place before, if full, you have.

Finally got my 360 copy!

Quick question - This is the part that I wasn't so good at in Oblivion. And that's creating the best possible character for what I want.

I want to be able to use Sniper Rifles and long distance weapons to get stealth kills so should I put my perks on Small Guns, Big Guns or should I do it for the Laser Weapons one? (I forget what it's called).

Finally beat it last night, after about 75 hours of mucking around (and I still didn't do everything I wanted to do). I agree that the ending was abrupt, but I didn't mind it. I reloaded and finished it another way and I could see the difference in the end sequence, so that was nice.

also, come on, Fawkes, COME ON. REALLY.

Mass Effect could've been great if they invented a system similar to vats but with some depth, because the combat in that game is shithouse. Actually vats as it stands is pretty damn shit. After you get over the blood and guts, there's really not much there as far as combat goes. Spam-headshot-spam headshot-spam-headshot. This is the era of gaming we're in. Everything has to cater to the vegetable.

There are only two silent weapons in the game, the silenced 10mm and the dart gun. Both fall under small arms. You should be aware that being truly stealthy is nearly impossible without the silent running perk, which I believe unlocks at level 10. The ammo for the true sniper rifle is very scarce, but you can use the hunting rifle early on in the game, and the assault rifle has pretty decent range. Laser rifle is pretty decent, but not exactly easy to find. The plasma rifle is much better, but even more rare. You pretty much need to advance near the end of the main quest if you want to seriously use energy weapons. There's an event that will make them a little more common.

I'd recommend focusing on small arms, lockpick, and repair as your primary skills.

If you want to build a stealth character I'd recommend tagging:
small guns,
sneak,
repair

Repair is like the most essential thing in this game. Small guns will encompass pretty much the entire arsenal of a stealthy character, and sneak will obviously be a big aid in getting you within close proximity while remaining hidden for the stealth kills.

Just because you tag 'em doesn't mean you need to throw tons of skill points in them right away though, I view tagging as a good way to get skills to useable levels so you can play the style of character you want without giving up tons of early skill points to the specific skills in your desired style of play.

My first and current character could probably be best described as the Gordon Freeman of the wastes. Topped out INT already, very high perception, and solid across the board in everything else.

Future builds I'm considering would be a big guns character, for whom I'd tag repair, small guns, and I'm thinking maybe explosives or lockpicks (to facilitate looting), with heavy use of the perks "size matters" and "strong back".

I really want to make a character who uses the perks "night person" and "solar powered" both though, and play to that difference. Get strength, perception, and intelligence up to 8 (after all bonuses) and then soak up big points in endurance, agility, and luck. The only real problem I'd see is that 1. I'd save looting inside buildings for nights and 2. I'd be a melee focused character outside in the day, so when I'm roaming the open wastes, getting shot at while trying to close ground on enemies. I guess the regen ability would off-set that though.

Lot of interesting ideas to work with in the game's character system.

On a whole I really like it. I still don't think it fits with the Fallout 1 and 2 legacy as it doesn't really capture the same kind of character from the NPCs and world at large. But its an excellent step forward from Morrowind and it makes it very easy to forget Oblivion.
