The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Some thoughts as I started the game: get to Megaton, get directions to Rivet Town: in Rivet Town there's an Int bobblehead. Int bonuses are better the earlier you get them. It's kind of hard to get there, but if you're careful you can make it.

There's a big ol road that crosses the river to the northeast of Megaton, and over there is a raider ruin where there's a ton of skill books and a Lockpick bobblehead. If you don't have 50 lockpick, this'll help you get into the Sheriff's house so you can get the Strength bobblehead.

Getting a perk every single level I found surprising. I wasn't expecting it, and didn't plan for it. That's what I get for trying to min-max a game I'd never played before. :lol

Also, if you don't already have a 10 int (and if you have a 9, go to Rivet first), boosting your Int stat is better than any +5 / +5 skill, for obvious reasons. Boosting Int at L2 will give you 18 skill points over the course of the game. The 2nd level perks mainly suck. +5 / +5 Perks, XP bonus (never been useful in any FO, as xp has always been plentiful), and Lady Killer, well, I guess that's some interesting flavor, but nah. So early on boost stats, definately. Had I known Perk every level, I would have tried instead to get max strength without power armor (I love power armor, but unlike in FO and FO2, there's some alternatives that are almost as good, without the penalties, and indeed, the penalties are higher in FO3, since power armor never reduced agility before, just gave a sneak penalty - in at FO:T, at least).

At L4 Comprehension and Educated appear and those are very attractive prospects, obviously (Educated is like 3 points of Int, and you take it if you already have 10). Iron Fist sounds kind of cool, but Unarmed only. :( Can't wait for Toughness at L6 for this guy. Still seems like a lot of levels open for stat boosting for this guy. After L11, boosting Int is worse than picking up a +5/+5, but at that point there should be some better options (Strong Back, Commando, etc).

After that, I'm thinking Silent Running, Lifegiver, Pyromaniac, Cyborg, Better Criticals and Action Boy. L18 stuff sucks for me, I think. L20 has Ninja.

I was initially surprised skills stopped at 100 and tag skills didn't do double points. You really couldn't "max out" everything in FO & FO2, but it sure looks like you can here.

There isn't any aim assist, so when shooting without VATS, play it a little more Rainbow Six by finding cover and luring out the enemies, rather than rushing them. Get the drop on them if possible, and aim to cripple, especially a disarm. It's much easier on PC, but it's still doable on the console.

Yeah, I see what you're saying and I'm trying to do that more and more now. However, my criticism still stands. If you get within 20 feet of an enemy with a laser rifle or assault rifle, they're going to do serious damage to you while you try to shoot them. Not only are the enemies deadly accurate but they move quickly too. Getting to cover and trying to shoot is just clunky. I'm not complaining that it's too hard or difficult to aim (I love tough games and like I said earlier, love FPSs and have always been good at them) it's just for me, there's something that bugs me about shooting shit outside of VATS. Maybe I should be playing this on PC, I dunno.

So after playing just 20 minutes or so (I haven't even taken my G.O.A.T. yet), I can see I'm going to get sucked into this game. I STILL haven't gotten around to finishing up Mass Effect even though I started it last year -- I don't know what's going with me -- so I told myself I can't play Fallout 3 again until after I beat Mass Effect.

I bet I don't end up beating Fallout 3 until the end of next year, too. :\

I don't know. I do pretty well with the assault rifle and .44. Even the shotgun doesn't need vats when you lure them in close. Just pump their heads full of shells. Better yet, aim for the arm to disarm them and nail them while they fumble for another weapon. As long as you use cover and don't play it like Halo, you should be fine.

Lifegiver isn't worth it, especially if your Endurance is respectable. It's better to take the perks that up your Damage Resistance like Toughness. Cyborg is a fantastic all-round defense perk but you have to make sure your Medicine Skill is at 60 by Level 14. Adamantine Skeleton is also excellent as not only reduces the damage you take but you use less Stimpacks on repairing critical damage to your limbs. The difference is noticeable.

Another chain of Perks that feed off one another is the VATS/Criticals ones. Gunslinger (and/or) Commando, Finesse, Mysterious Stranger, Sniper, Action Boy, Better Criticals and even Grim Reaper's Spirit all work together to form a nightmare of VATS fighting that few enemies will escape. I don't like Concentrated Fire because while it would fit nicely in the build it requires both Small Guns AND Energy Weapons at 60 and I don't envision a build where you would want both so high.

There is a run of stealth perks that you already know go nicely with melee: Silent Runner, Mister Sandman, Night Person and Ninja. The skill perks we've discussed.

As I see it those are the four perk trees: Defence, VATS, stealth and skill points. After that the best perks are one-offs to round out your character. I like Strong Back and Scrounger. I took Night Runner and it's a noticeably great perk. For fun roleplaying I like Lady Killer/Black Widow and Child at Heart. Animal Friend looks interesting, especially two ranks of it, but I never got to try it with my character. My next character will be a Cannibal to see if that's worth it.

Have you gotten a pop-up that says he went back there? Because that dude wandered around the wasteland for what seemed like forever on me. After a while, I got a pop up that told me he had gone back to the bar, and there he was, chillin'.

If I'm totally off base here, sorry. I didn't bother going back to find your original question.. :lol

It said he returned to the Underworld. I searched everywhere (I believe Carol's Place, the 9th Circle, the Doctor's Office and the rooms downstairs are all the rooms in the Underworld), but he was no where to be found. I said in my original question I was surprised to see the message pop up, since he had died earlier in my game.

very lttp, but I just started. The moment you get out of the vault is amazing. I'm in Megaton now. I just did a little sidequest where I helped this Leo Stahl get off his water addiction... He's given me a key to some water facility, is that in Megaton itself or outside?

Inside Megaton, it's inside the Water Processing Plant along the upper level of the town. Inside this house there's a locked desk you can unlock with the key.

Another lttp guy over here. I'm going to
blow up Megaton!
Can't wait to make the impossibly long trek to meet the guy.

EDIT: Wow, I did it. That's the first time I've thought "Hey, wouldn't it be cool if..." in a game only to be answered with "Sure you can!"

Didn't expect the
bomb to actually go off
, though. Awesome.

Clover is an idiot
After killing all the Raiders in Evergreen Hills, she opened the gate to the behemoth and started attacking it. :lol I didn't have my Fatman on me, so she died.

:lol thanks for posting that. I chose to disarm the bomb (I obviously care more about the future of humanity than you do) and I've been curious ever since. I was thinking to myself
"there's no way you can actually blow up Megaton!"
but I guess I was wrong! Does the whole thing just disappear? You can never go back?

So I was at
Minefield
again to take care of that bastard sniper once and for all. I snuck from behind and started sniping him using the VAT, it kept missing and luckily he didn't notice me. Then I accidentally shot another shot without VAT and baaaam he drops dead :lol

That's the only thing I did the other night playing this game.

Damn I've been playing for what seems like ever and someone told me I just started.

How long is this game? I must have played 6 hours by now, and I've started doing all the side missions.

With sidequests and exploring? 50 to 60 hours.

I have to assume absurdly deadly ruins in terms of rads per second.

Also: Super-Duper Mart = fun.

This game is strangely satisfying with a poor small arms skill and hard difficulty. Some good headshots with a sawed-off shotgun and a big damn sledgehammer = good times. Sneak seems really crappy in this game though, I gotta say. Granted, I need more skill in it, but it doesn't seem to work well on anyone.

Something that isn't really mentioned much is that you really have to move slowly for sneak to be effective early on. Until you can get the Silent Running perk you've basically got to keep the stick at a half angle (if you know what I mean). OH! Another sneaky tip : if you can hear yourself and your clothing and your footsteps, it means others can too. Very nice touch that has come in handy.

I'm 55 hours into the game now, and finally figured it out enough to be pretty reliable on exploding pants. So, I put on power armour, finally got a follower and am running and gunning everything in sight. It's fun for the whole family!

Finally made my way to the Republic of Dave. Got that guy to give me his key, plus I got a free Quantum and a
Perception Bobblehead!
. Also after I completed the quest, I just put on a stealth boy and got those keys back!

Time to hunt for some sick armor!

Seems about right. I did all the sidequests and finished in slightly over 60 hours. 3 or 4 of the quests I even used a guide to find because I was impatient, so if you never do that then it's more like 60-70 hours.

Loving the game so far. I don't understand the hacking though. I know you're supposed to connect words, but even then... My first terminal had 'very easy' on it and I stared at the screen for minutes, not knowing what to pick. Maybe I was too tired.

I did lose an hour + of playtime yesterday though. I started the Those! sidequest, but apparently my level was way too low to see it through (4). I was knee deep into that metro station before I knew it was a hopeless cause. You can run out of ammo fast. For now I'll just continue with the main quest.

The hacking is easy, just pick a word, then look in the bottom right. The word is displayed along with how many letters are in the correct places. So it could say.

BALLS
2/5 correct

And your next guess would be something like

KELLY

because there are only two letters in the same places (the two L:s). For an easier time, just put the cursor on the next word yoy want to pick. The letters will line up under the previous word and you can easily check which letters are the same.

Also with

Then

BELLY

Could never be the password since 3/5 match up with BALLS.

Bethesda really nailed the mini-games, I think they're brilliant.

I was hoping I would get wrapped up in some kind of G-Man storyline. And yeah, it's a big, irridiated crater. You can't go inside, but you can get radiation poisoning from the outside. And,
is the person turned into a ghoul the person you helped most? I met Moira outside the ruins because I helped with the first chapter of her book.

Worry not, it's because you're low level. By level 14 my Sneak was in the 70s and I was stealthing up to pacing Yao Guai so that i could pet their soft fur before skewering them with the Shishkabob.

I'm rolling good guy this go. I've made myself a dude and I'm pooling points into Endurance right now. Concentrating on Repair, Energy Weapons.

Any tips I should know? :)
Don't bother with energy weapons at the start. They're relatively weak and somewhat hard to get ammo for since almost no enemies will use them against you.

Yeah, sneak 60+ and silent running means you can surprise just about anything.

Most of the weapons I find aren't so hot for melee - the ones that do decent damage take a ton of AP to swing in VATS. So what I generally do is close to point blank range where my pathetic small arms skill doesn't matter and then Chinese Rifle / Combat Shotgun ftw! Come to think, this reminds me of several FO and FO2 playthroughs. :lol

You know that's not entirely true - there was this cool knife I found in Bethesda's Raid Shack.

I want those Shiskebab plans. Lucky Hadith has 'em, but that's really expensive. I heard it was an early quest so I hope I find 'em soon. I already did things like Those! and now I'm doing the Minefield thing for Moira.

Ran into the Junkyard by happenstance... Dogmeat is so damn awesome.

My only beef so far is the combat system. VATS is awesome but for me it's really the only way to kill stuff effectively. Outside of VATS, the aiming system is just... off. It doesn't work as well as it should. The enemies just slaughter me outside of VATS. I'm good at FPSs, too. I dunno.

VATS is the best way to kill, PERIOD. It conserves the most ammo. It is the best for medium to short range fighting. For long distance, manual sniping with the proper weapon (hunting rifle, sniper rifles) work best. But if ammo is short, VATS is the way to go.

But, yeah, the whole thing about being able to chose between using VATS or just go traditional FPS style, is total bullshit.

Agreed. But then the non-VATS FPS style needs to be there or else they'd have to make it turn-based. When I run out of AP and the enemy is still standing, you just have to fire away. That's really the only time I ever use it.

As I progressed in the game and my aim got better, I would always aim for my enemy's gun as my first shot in VATS. You have no idea how much easier this made killing super mutants!! The only downside is that it would damage the weapon significantly.

Yeah, sneak 60+ and silent running means you can surprise just about anything.

Towards the end though, energy weapons rule. I pretty much stuck to the energy rifle and combat shotgun towards the last third of the game. Killer combo

If a target is far away, you've got a better chance at a head or limb shot just taking your shot, rather than through VATS.

I'm level 6 now and finally feel like I'm hitting my stride with the game. Its so awesome in so many ways :D

I have decent weapons and caps tally but problems currently:

a) I can only carry 200 points worth of stuff, even when I reduce everything as much as I feel comfortable with, I'm still carrying like 110, so thats not much room for loot. I'm thinking as soon as I hit the next level I need to pump something into strength on way or another. Any tips?

b) my sniping SUCKS! I got a sniper rifle, my small guns is like 45 or so but I have such lame accuracy with it that I might as well not use it. I have much better luck with the hunting rifle in VATS because you get 3 quick shots where the sniper is just one. Someone just said sniping is best done manually - really? Does ayone have som hard advice on how to become a kickass stealthy sniper who can actually get consistent kills from any range? I even struggle with medium/short range sniper kills atm.

Learn to not carry wasteful junk, or at least start to stash it. The game keeps track of every item in the world, so if you leave something somewhere, it'll still be there unless a quest changes that location in some way. It's safest to just get your house then start stashing.

110 is too much. carry half of that. On average I walk out with 49 pounds of overall weight. I tend to carry the sniper rifle, rifle, machine gun, pistol and a stick . You could go with less but i'm trying to spread the wear and ammo across weapons.

1.you don't need lots of weapon. pick 3 or 4. carry a machine gun or a shotgun, not both.
2. for armor, just your main piece and hat, maybe a repair suit that's 1 pound.
3. No food or any aid that carries weight. you don't need mentats or food that gives you radiation. I carry around 10 stimpaks, and some rad-clearing stuff and that's it.
4. for Misc, do not carry anything but your lockpicks. right now I'm also carrying the lucky 8 ball.

sniping gets better later, with more points to small guns and some perks. I just got a head shot where i could barely see the enemy because it was so far away. Today I would say that out of the 8 continuous head shots, 7 were done in vats. I read somewhere on the guide that you get extra % points in vats than in free mode for these type of things.
1. Get your small guns over 75(mine is at 85+. going for the skill books so i can put points somewhere else). Sneak should be 75+
2. get these perks: thief(at least the 1st level), bloody mess, commando, finesse, gun nut(all 3), and scrounger. There are more but these are the ones i've gotten so far.

You can become a great sniper in the game, I remember being frustrated by the lack of range of the scope and not being able to kill them with one shot, but they go away after a while. The range can be fixed with good sneaking and position or a manual shot at long range. The one shot kills come later and often once your small gun and perks start to kick in.

There are a few perks that will help you out.

A) Get the "Strong Back" perk once you hit level 8 - gives you another 50lbs worth of carring room. Way better than pumping the extra into Strength.

B) Keep pumping points into "small guns" then add perks that increase your accuracy in Vats like Gunslinger (lvl 6), Commando (lvl8) and Sniper (lvl 12). If you pick those perks and get your small guns skill up to 100 you won't be missing much in VATS. Manual sniper shots work pretty well - just zoom in and shoot. You typically hit what the crossairs are on. Killing in one shot is pretty hard to do on anything stronger than a Raider - unless you are packing one of the better guns in the game.

I have yet to find any schematics or whatever so I tend to hoard all of the more unique junk I find. I eventually just dumped everything onto the ground in the power station W-NW of Megaton, and I'm hoping it'll all be there when I go back. I assume I'll need that stuff to build weapons and whatnot?

Yeah but it's plentiful so don't bother unless you have a place to store it. I bought a workbench for my place so I don't have to run around so much. I heard having more than one of the same schematic improves your overall starting condition of the weapon too.

Has anyone made an official fallout 3 screenshot thread? If not we need one.

This game is simply incredible. Played the evening through. I got to the museum for the radio quest. The main courtyard had a fuckton of mutants, but they weren't much trouble with AK + sniper. Small guns and its perks ftw

edit: should I follow the main quest til I hit the final mission and then do all the sidequests, or mix things up? What are some of the easier ones that you can tackle with a low level?
