The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Finished the Pitt.

Bethesda seems to be missing the point -- Missing the fact that the capital wasteland is the star of Fallout 3. Unless they intend on crafting a seperate area that's as expansive and open as this, or even close, then don't bother. They'd be so much better served sprinkling new content into the existing land, new enemies, weapons, encounters, quests, locations, characters -- All of this would permanently enrich the FO3 gameplay experience, not just be a 3 hour distraction.

My problem with the Fallout 3 DLCs are that they are not catering to what makes the game attractive to begin with. They offer a 3 hour distraction in a seperate area, consisting of tiny little maps that connect to eachother in a very linear fashion -- The player is lead through these by the main quest -- And when it's over, it's over. The Pitt feels like a bad version of KOTOR or Mass Effect, since they use basically the same gameplay model, but don't do it as well. It's not doing what Bethesda games are loved for. It's simply not worth $10 and I regret paying.

Thanks you saved me $10

Weird. I feel exactly the opposite - with the DLC I am looking forward to something that the main game doesn't offer. I don't just want more of the same style of game in bite-size chunks. To each their own I guess.

what you're getting now is a different game in a bite sized chunk. The pitt is small, short, and disappointing.

What I am proposing is putting a variety of new content into the capital wasteland all at once, not something you can zero in on and conquer in a couple hours and be done with. Make ongoing, persistent additions to the wasteland. New enemies will appear out there. New things. New random encounters. What's fun about FO3 is the openness and the diversity, the exploration, the idea of just wondering what's over the horizon. They should add new things to find.

I play FO3 and I enjoy wandering around the wasteland, because after all this time, I still find new things. But if there was simply more variety in the things I ran into, that'd be worth the price alone.

That's what I want, though. I want something fresh that is more self-contained from the core game.

Reason being, if for whatever reason I was not happy with the DLC content, I'd be stuck with it out there in the wastes and whatever impact that may have on the rest of the game world. The core game has so much content already that I'm not sure I really see much value in adding new bits here and there that don't really feel unique compared to everything else that's already there. When they're self-contained like they have been, they're more open to being able to force you to play by new rules and mechanics without having to try and fit them into the mold of the core game. I like that a lot, personally.

Here's a very basic example of an expansion I'd gladly pay $10 for: A patch that adds new types of enemies to randomly encounter, new minor random encounters, and sprinkles a few new weapons and armors into the world. If that's ALL the DLC was, I'd pay $10 and not feel ripped off in the least, because it contributes to the core game, it contributes to the core experience of what makes Fallout 3 fun to replay.

I was over at the Bethesda forums and it's just one huge clusterfuck. People are bitching endlessly about freezing issues and yet there's no official word on the issues.

Reading things like that makes me very hesitant to pay for this DLC after Broken Steel is released. What would be the point of paying for more frustration?

My 10$ purchase is still 100% unplayable. So dissapointing.

This is why I won't be getting any of the DLC.

Not that there isn't a place for these kinds of little modules, but there has to be ways to make them more worthwhile.

They seem to have this aversion to anything that adds, enhances, fixes, or otherwise changes the greater game world.

We saw it with Oblivion, where even the most extreme imbalances went untouched out of some desire not to meddle with the core experience. Anything that was added had to be pretty much extraneous and have no effect on the game that came on the disc.

That's where the modders step in, I guess.

if or when you ever get into pc gaming, repickup fallout 3 on pc, the mods i posted do that and so much more.

dozens of new enemies, hundreds of new weapons/armor/items, build and maintain your own custom village, so many bug fixes.

Damn it. I blind bought this last night too. Will play it, and will get the last DLC but Bethesda is not making me happy with these garbage add ons for Fallout 3.

The last DLC pack better be expansive, and it better be cheap to make up for what they have put out so far. The only saving grace Fallout 3 gets is that the content of the actual game is so good it is worth more than 60 dollars to me. But my patience is starting to wear thin with Bethesda.

Just a heads up: The issue causing guranteed freezing on certain 360's has not been resolved. The current theory is that a creature spawn point was deleted, causing the game to consistently crash when entering that spawn point radius. I have no idea why it only effects certain Users(like me). Any way, word of warning to anyone still debating buying The Pitt. There is a possibility, as of now, it will not work.

I just hit Level 20 and have quite a lot of sidequests uncompleted. I'm stopping the game for now until Broken Steel releases or until we get more info on it.

I'm not sure how they're going to handle the extra 10 levels because most players would probably be able to get a 100 in all if not almost all skills by the time they hit level 30. Perhaps the skill cap of 100 would be raised to 120 or 150? There's also the fact that if there's going to be new and more powerful monsters, the player's skills definitely needs to be raised in order to maintain the difficulty balance from the original. I'm quite curious to see what's going to be done about this.

well in fallout 1 and 2 skills saw increase in effectiveness up untill 300% (200% for fallout 1).

this is taken from the old faq

Is there any point in raising any of my skills over 100%?

I know it's a little counter-intuitive, but yes, skills improve all the way up to 300% (or 200% in the original Fallout). No action in the Fallout universe is ever guaranteed, so having 100% in a given skill by no means assures that you will succeed every time you use it. That said, other than your primary combat skill (especially if you're doing a lot of long-range shooting), everything performs well enough at lower levels, that improvements beyond 100%, while very real, are also negligible. There are one or two exceptions tied to specific quests at certain points in the game, but none of them are required to succeed. Rather than post spoilers, however, I'll leave them for you to discover.

whether that applies to how bethesda will do it for fallout 3, remains to be seen, but yes in the fallout universe its been done before.

Should I just finish up the the main story except the final quest and then finish up the side quests? Because I'm getting overwhelmed by all the sidequests here, and in many cases, the enemies are raping me when I try to travel the map.

Well, the sidequests do gain you a lot of exp that will come in handy for the main quest. If you're finding the game difficult, try looking up Wiki and going out of your way to pick up some of the unique weapons and armour. Ol'Painless and The Terrible Shotgun are relatively easy to obtain and are pretty powerful. Ranger Battle Armour will take a bit more time but it's the best armour in the game and obtaining it early makes a huge difference.

Choose one combat skill to specialize in and pump it till at least 80 (before Bobblehead and skill books) and you'll have an easier time. The best combat skill would probably be Small Guns due to the awesomeness of the uniques and the sheer amount of ammo and replacement guns that can be found for them. Energy Weapons are good too but are more viable late-game due to the difficulty in finding spare weapons to repair them.

In addition, the Repair skill is an absolute must (same with Small Guns, 80 before Bobblehead and skill books) since you would need to repair your guns to good condition in order to get more damage out of them. The damage difference between two similar guns with one at 30% condition and another at 100% is pretty huge.

The sidequest's are what make the game fun in the first place IMO. Stop whatever you are doing in the main quest and beat every single side quest. You will level up faster and get better weapons, stimpacks, etc. Rushing through the game doing only the main quest is a travesty to this amazing game.

Ok, one of the guards loitering in the little town square outside Midea's quarters sounds EXACTLY like Moe form the Simpsons. I wonder if its the same voice actor. I see it as a very real possibility.

What the hell. HELP ME PLEASE.

I try booting up Fallout 3 earlier because I might want to get The Pitt. Instead of the game booting up I get an Application Error. It doesn't even start.

I think maybe something is up with the Steam shortcut so I go directly to the start menu. Going through that I get the Splash menu but when I click Play I get the goddamned Application Error.

apperror130.jpg

I try reinstalling the game while keeping my save files. I immediately download the latest patch and as it finishes patch I get the Application Error.

I go to reinstall again and this time I accidentally delete all my saves (MOTHER FUCKER). No dice. Still get the App Error.

What the fuck is going on?

You should be able to recover those save files with a simple data recovery software.

Wow. Finally got around to finishing this game. HUGE spoilers:

I started my gaming session at the beginning of the Vault 87 mission...
super mutants in a vault?!!? What are they doing here? How did they get in? But wait...now, one of them is talking to me over the intercom!!! Is it a trap? Nope, it's a FRIENDLY mutant!! Nice guy. I've got the GECK now, on my way out of the vaul---OH SHIT WTF! Half-Life 2 style kidnapping! Woah, the President is actually not a bad guy. He gave me all my shit back...but WTF HE IS A COMPUTER!!!!!! Wow, so many plot twists and turns but WAIT there's MORE! He's self-destructing now and I've got to escape! Outside of Raven Rock there are crazy awesome explosions. Amazing graphics, they must really be pushing the engine to its limits ... or NOT!!!!! Liberty Prime is now walking the streets!
This is one of the coolest fucking sci-fi games ever made.

Well thats just great. I'm staying at a hall of residence so I can't access xbox live, I take my console round to a mates so I can download the pitt. It works for the first day after which I take my console back round to my mates to play some live. When I brang it back and tried to load my fallout save it warned me content was missing then crashed during the load. Since my only save is in the pitt I cannot play Fallout 3 from here unless I start the game again. What the hell?

Wowzers!!
After playing Oblivion on the Xbox2 a few years ago and hating the crap out of it, I thought I would hate this game equally but I bought it anyway a few weeks ago.
Played it for a bit and got bored but after a few more hours its undoubtedly a fantastic game, and it runs pretty sweet on my IBM compatible machine.
I don't think I'm playing it right though, I have saved my dad + a dozen or so missions and my best weapon is only a hunting rifle and i've only got some ghetto armor, but I'm carrying some helmet which requires some advanced training. WTF? Just put the helmet on IMO.
Are there better weapons? do I need better weapons? Do I need to horde all this junk that i'm collecting? My dude is always carrying 200+ items out of a possible 250 and everyone is poor so i cant sell some of my more exotic finds.
Anyway. Best game i've played this year. Believe me.

Well I didn't just start the game or anything. I'm 45 hours in, I'm level 15-16 and I THINK I'm nearing the end, which is why I asked.

I'm on the waters of life quest with
my father. We decided to meet in Rivet City science lab after venturing into that one awesome Vault
.

I've tackled 16 quests so far and discovered 65 locations.

The enemies I'm talking about that constantly rape me usually, are the giant radscorpions and Yao Guai, Deathclaws too. Usually my Chinese assault rifle's good enough for the job, sometimes it ain't.

Sorry for not clarifying.

I figure I should concentrate on quests for now, but I'm worried I don't have enough ammo and firepower for that shit, particularly the Head of State and Stealing Independence quest because Super Mutants - particularly ones at the mall - scare the shit out of me.

Hmm what kind of stats and perks did you take? I assume you're playing at Normal difficulty? At Level 16, I was raping the shit out of everything I meet. Super Mutants (even Masters) were no problem at all and I had a shit-ton of ammo to mess around with.

For Giant Radscorpions, Yao Guai and Deathclaws, I would suggest grabbing a combat shotgun and waiting for them to close the distance to you. Once they're in melee range, turn on your VATS and unload everything you've got.

Even better, go grab the unique combat shotgun from Evergreen Mills. It has a damage rating of 80 and is extremely awesome for fast melee enemies like Deathclaws. Check out the Fallout wiki for the details of that if you're not sure.

I haven't done Stealing Independence but Head of State is really easy. You just need to take care of some Ghouls and Slavers.

Also, in terms of main quest progression, you're about two-thirds through so there's still a decent chunk of main quest for you to run through.

The standard Hunting Rifle is actually a really great weapon, especially when you combine it with Sneak attack criticals. You would probably want to switch to a Chinese Assault Rifle if enemies get too close though. The Ol'Painless is a unique Hunting Rifle that is easily acquired and it can take you all the way to the end of the game, if you want to.

For better armour, do the Reilly's Rangers quest. You can get the best armour in the game from that and it's not too hard of a quest. Also, why are you carrying so much stuff on yourself? Why not just store it in a locker in your house?

Well, It's now been a week since it's official release, and the Pitt is still broken. The "circle of death" bug plaguing myself and many other gamers has not yet been patched, and we have received no communication other than "people are working on it".

I could call MS and bitch until I got my points back, but I don't want to. I want to play the game.

I was doing the Waters of Life quest and think I am stuck in a bug. Dr. Li won't follow me out of the tunnel. I tried killing Garza and still didn't get anywhere. Can anyone help me out?

I just completed the ranger training so i have proper armor :)
I wasn't aware that my character had a house, everytime my dude gets too heavy I head over to Megaton and sell my stuff to them, but the doctor is the only rich dude and he's a bit of an asshole.
I remember saving a little kid from fire ants earlier, can i take his house and store stuff there?
Also, is there any special place to buy ammo?

Thanks. :o)

Hmm, you can get a house by completing the sidequest to
disarm the bomb
in
Megaton
.

You can't take the fireant kid's house to store stuff because your stuff might disappear. Even in my own house, I've had stuff disappear on me before. I've come to rely on the Nuka Cola Machine that you can buy for your house for my storage purposes as I heard it's won't ever cause your items to disappear.

Nah, ammo is sold everywhere. What I do is, every time I meet a trader, I would buy all the useful ammo (.32, 5.56, .44 magnum, .302, etc) from him and this helps to stockpile ammo in the long run.

We’re working with Microsoft to get a version of The Pitt up that corrects the aforementioned freezing issue. Once the content is up and available, we’ll let you know.

We’d like to thank all our fans who generously and methodically reported what they were seeing on our official forums, via email and on this blog. This data was immensely helpful in tracking down these issues.

Thanks again to everyone for their support, patience and feedback.

It is good they are fixing the issues, but at the same time it sucks people had to pay 10 dollars to beta test this DLC for Bethesda. For fears of something locking up my game, I haven't even touched my copy of The Pitt yet until a completely fixed version is available for download.

Plus the fact the DLC doesn't sound too hot in the first place hasn't motivated me to go play it right away. Bethesda has been failing hardcore with post release support and content for Fallout 3. :/

What The hell?!
Did i just accidentally clock the game?
I sent the blonde girl in to type the code and we both died which brought up the credits. Is that it?
I had just got to level 12 and increased my explosive skills to 25 so i could defuse the nuke.
I so wanted to do a few more quests and stuff. :(

Forgot to post earlier, I downloaded this over the weekend and finished it, had no issues whatsoever (on 360).

Kinda liked it, playing with a maxed out character removed any kind of fun/tension from the combat, liked how morally gray the story became but then was annoyed that my choice, which I deemed to be the best option, was rewarded with negative karma, for reference I
Refused to kidnap a baby from a loving family

Was fun though to play the
Duel part, and for the supposed boss, just chuck 4 grenades at his feet and watch his legs fly off

Definitely wasn't worth the 800 points though, it's got no lasting value, and in the absence of the patch to raise the level cap, it's pretty mindless.

I was hoping the DLC would play on the emergent aspects of the game a little more, give me more ways to fuck with people, maybe a way to attract super-mutants to settlements or turn NPCs into ghouls or something.

Not to say I mind extra story, but I don't care about these side stories, and the DLC isn't big enough to take the time to make me care.

You should spoil tag some of that I think.

Yes that's the end , the third DLC lets you keep going so wait for that or reload a save.

Great game.... was over before I thought it should be but the ending was satisfying for the most part.

I did go back and reload one of my saves as the
Giant robot is marching towards the Jefferson mem.
and now I'm going to go dick around.

Already killed 3 dog.... but yet the radio keeps on going.... :lol His shades and headwrap are nice though.

Anyways--- will probably replay it just to play it different and end up more evil the second go round than I did the first time.

Great game. :D

Just hit 100 hours in the game (Delaying the end). Anyway, played the Pitt with a too strong character I guess, because it was over in an evening. But it was good to get back to the wasteland even though I somewhat enjoyed the pitt.

I bought Fallout 3 yesterday.

I just escaped the Vault, ended up killing the Overseer, not sure if that could be avoided or not... Anyway, I'm kind of just chilling in Megaton, I got a bunch of quests. Before I head out to towards finding my father again, is there anything interesting to make sure to do in Megaton to do before I head out? Cool town, tried to pick up the hooker in the Saloon or whatever but she wasn't having that.:lol

Pretty much everything in Megaton can be come back to, depending on how you play the atomic quest.

So I just bought Fallout 3 on PC, and played for about an hour. Got out the vault and found some school and killed some guy and talked to some lady who was a junkie and prostitue.

Anyway, my PC isn't amazing but the game runs fine on what seems to be medium settings but there are hitches sometimes..
What are the best mods to get for performance wise, graphics, and just generally good mods?
