The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

sounds like you guys are having a much better experience with this. Fallout 3 PS3 is damn near broken with dlc added on, and pretty shitty even without. I loooooooved F3 on 360 but man I literally threw my money away with the PS3 version :/

I want a refund for my dlc purchase at minimum, but according to Bethsoft my PS3 system is at fault hahaha

Bethesda really loses credibility for being so obvious in their lack of quality control pertaining to the port. Bugs are undeniably inherent in an open world game, but single digit frame-rates are unacceptable.

The DLC on ps3 is hilarious. I don't understand why they had to make so many things permanent - as others have said, I don't think this so much has to do with DLC (though DLC certainly doesn't help), but with the size of the savegames incurred.

I think i played the totality of point lookout at something like 10 FPS:lol
So ridiculously broken!

I just don't see how the game got past even the most apathetic of testers. Maybe I and a few thousand others are isolated cases in the grand scheme, and every other version works 100% OK, but my version of Fallout is literally an unfinished product.

I want to play my PS3 in Bethesda's lobby and ask them if they think this is acceptable

I stealth punched my way through that part. Oh Chinese Stealth Suit, I love how gamebreaking you are.
This. The CSS does break the game quite a lot, but for a 3rd, 4th, etc playthrough, it makes for some good fun. You can do some SERIOUS damage with it though, if you choose your weapons and perks wisely. My favorite combo was this...

Stealth Suit
Shishkebab
Pyromaniac
Silent Running
Better Criticals
Ninja

With that setup, you can just crouch-walk your way through any tough area, and not be noticed. But the best part is, even if you do attack anyone, because the Shishkebab is a melee weapon, it is considered "silent" in the game. You can one-swing kill a Super Mutant who is standing right next to another one, and they never even know you're there. It is quite hilarious. Especially with Bloody Mess. When one of them just explodes and the other one just keeps standing there like nothing's going on. :lol

Plus, since you are basically guaranteed a "Sneak Attack Critical" with the CSS, with those perks selected, you do some serious damage with the Shishkebab. It turns from a fun, novelty weapon, into a pretty serious item. I kept a stash of about 6-7 of them on hand at all times in my house in Megaton to use for repairs, to keep the Shish in perfect condition.

My experience with the PS3 GOTY version was... mixed.

I got the same number of hang ups or freezes that i suffered in the vanilla PC version.

The only REAL problems i face were:

Extremely low FPS in one area of Operation Anchorage (solved restarting de PS3) (had to restart it twice though)

Low FPS in Point Lookout, not gamebreaking anyway...

Any other problem was solved restarting the game.

My savefile ended up being 13 mb.... Crazy.

At least i got all the juice from the game. I even get all trophies.

I kind of pardoned OP:A because there was 'so much' going on. I mean that in the context of I usually can't shoot a gun without a second freeze so the fact that there were multiple explosions going on made the low fps sort of... justified.

I can't even go to the Citadel Lab. It's like a powerpoint slideshow in there. I mean I hate to bitch and complain but I am just really, really disappointed.

Are there any weapons I can use to repair the Tesla cannon?
There is a decent handful of them in the game. There will be 2 at the Citadel either
in front of where Liberty Prime previously stood if you didn't blow up the Citadel
, or in
the armory of what was the Citadel if you did blow it up.
But also, if you go back to the Air Force Base, you can wander around and find a decent amount. I think I found 4 or 5, but the wiki page says there is a total of 8.

Also, if you play Mothership Zeta, you will acquire a large number of Alien Epoxy which raises the level of condition of your currently equipped weapon. How much it raises the condition depends on your repair skill, but even if you have a poor repair skill, you can use multiple epoxies to raise any weapon to 100%.

I hate the fact that I had no idea that the Alien Epoxy was actually useful until I was at a point where I could only gather about 10 of them :( This was mainly because when the girl tells you about them, I couldn't hear her due to my shitty TV speakers. This was the only line I didn't hear and I though "Oh no matter, no one has ever said anything important in this game anyway" :lol

Also, does anyone else find that Bethesda went WAY overboard with the difficulty on Motherhip Zeta and Point Lookout? I have a character that went through everything else in the game (including all the other DLC) on Very Hard without any problems whatsoever, but I just hit a brick wall inside the alien ship. The cloaked bastards take such an insane amount of damage to kill that it just feels like the game is cheating. In the end I got so pissed I lowered the difficulty from Very Hard to Very Easy just for the satisfaction of slaughtering the bastards :lol Then I started Point Lookout, and it's even more brutal. The stupid yokels punch through my T51 armor like it's made of butter, and on top of that some of them take more damage than a fucking Super Mutant Overlord! It's a hillbilly without a shirt on, what the hell Bethesda?

Alright GAF so I'm lttp and just bought the GOTY Edition. Quick question: If I complete the main quest first can I still do the DLC quests or would I have to start a new game? I thought I read somewhere once you complete the main quest the game ends. This game rocks so far, I love it.

I just bought the steam GotY version, it works perfectly fine.

The Broken Steel DLC removes the game ending screen so you can do the other DLC after the main questline if you want.

Just ordered the PC GOTY version, to go with my PS3 one! Need the mods! My laptop wioll just about run it, so we'll see how it goes.

The GOTY includes the Broken Steel DLC which allows you to wander the wasteland and do whatever quests you did not complete once you finish the main quest.

On a side note, I just finished all the DLCs with all the achievements 2 days ago. Took me 1 year and 1 month and around 250 hours. :lol

Playing vanilla FO3 on my ps3 was totally fine, then after 20 hours frame rate dips and consecutive playthrough freezes has made me go and stop playing this all together. Haven't even bought any DLC because of the issues I keep reading. I was kinda digging it in a "not sure I like it but it has me playing for hours on end so it's doing something right" way.

But after this, hell no to bethesda games.

IIRC, I think earlier in the thread the ps3 issues were attributed to the save file size, which I believe just gets bigger as the game progresses, eventually leading to issues like frame rate dropping.

This is why my repair skill is always maxed out. Plus it helps when you can combine multiple weapons into better and better quality ones, both in terms of value and effectiveness.

that's exactly it. My file size grows anywhere from 10 KB to 500 every save. Even if you literally sell every single item you own to Crazy Wolfgang, take every single random object and place it into a corpse inside of a metro (they disappear after 72 hours) the file size will grow just by going to new places or leveling up. I avoid combat whenever I am in the Wasteland because those corpses never, ever disappear and I don't want that to make my file even larger. It is around the 4k mark that frame rate dips start to become more frequent and intense. What a shame that there is a basic time limit on how much I get to play the game :p

Completely agree. Each time I've played through, regardless of what type of character I'm trying, I always try to quickly get my Repair as high as possible. Being able to keep your weapons and armor in as good a shape as possible is huge. My last time through, I did the Anchorage glitch (Thanks Gary! lol), so I had a great set of weapons and armor that didn't ever degrade. But, for those other random guns that I used that do degrade, some very quickly like the Terrible Shotgun, having max Repair is great.

But, as mentioned before, the Alien Epoxy works very well for those guns with no (or few) spares to repair with. The Alien Blaster/Firelance, Gauss Rifle and Tesla Cannon are prime examples of this. Sure, you can go scrounge around the Air Force Base for a few more Tesla Cannons for repair. But, when I was done with Mothership Zeta, I had like 125 Alien Epoxies. No sense in wasting time looking for repairs, or not using the weapon to save its condition, when 10 seconds in the Pip Boy solves the problem.

I just bought the normal version for the PS3 today and now I'm kind of worried after reading this thread and all the slow down problems. Did any of the new patches help this? I had to install 1.61 before I could play it.

Hello everyone. OK I am *FINALLY* going to start playing Fallout 3 today. I have the Steam GotY Edition, and it is fully patched to 1.7.

After doing a lot of reading on both the Bethesda and Nexus forums, I have decided to take a chance and add a few mods to the game. Yes, I already have the basic tools: FOMM, FOSE, Archive Invalidated, and BOSS.

With that in mind, here is a list of the following mods I've installed so far before I begin playing:

Xepha's Dynamic Weather.esm
StreetLights.esm
GalaxyNewsRadio100[M].esp
WeaponModKits.esp
WMKAA12Shotgun.esp
EVE.esp
Xepha's Dynamic Weather - Main.esp
Heyy Adrian's Better Sounds
Hi-rez Terrain Pack
Hi-rez Rocks Pack

Now, if any of these mods do not play nice together to your knowledge, please let me know. I may still pick the Project Beauty People mod but not sure yet.

I've got FOIP as well just in case but apparently it's just to make sure the major mods like MMM, FOOK2, EVE, and FWE play nice together so I haven't installed any of the plugins.

Regarding Heyy Adrian's Better Sound Mod....

I've downloaded all five of his sound mods(BSFM-MAIN, BSFM-Heavybreathing, Etc) but I don't know what to do with these folders. These folders are all seperate but where exactly do I place them? Do I simply place them in the Data folder(i.e. copy and paste BSFM_-_Heavybreathing-10863 directly into the data folder)? Or do I have to merge them and then place them into the data\sound folder? I'm confused.

Another thing....I will be using the "GNR -- More Where That Came From" music mod. Will his sound mod conflict with this mod in any way? Because I notice they both go into the "sound" folder so I'm just wondering.

I put 90hrs into the standalone PS3 version and can tell you I had exactly ONE crash and the framerate chugged only when things got crazy (6-7 enemies on screen at once with plasma rifles shooting all other the place and helicopters getting shot down).

90% of the time is was perfectly playable, and certainly one of the most immersive video game experiences in my 24 yrs of gaming.

Can't speak on the stability of the add ons however as I haven't dived in yet. Still discovering the rest of the DC wasteland (STILL haven't visited Cantebury Commons yet).

So far so good with the mods installed guys. I've gotten out of the Vault and I'm now in Megaton talking to Moriarty. The High res Terrain, road, and rocks pack is pretty cool.

Fallout Wanderer's Edition is pretty much the first mod you should look towards.

I am aware of FWE, but several people have advised against playing it and suggested I play somewhat Vanilla-style as far as story and combat changing content goes. Otherwise I will give a serious hard look at it. But the other thing is I hear it's notoriously difficult especially for Fallout 3 n00bies, and was advised to give FOOK2 a try instead.

Guys some questions.

I'm still fairly early in the game and I notice that I can steal things but I'll lose karma if I do.

1)How important is Karma vs stealing? Is one beneficial over the other?

2)What exactly do I benefit from having a lot of Karma?

3)Does stealing benefit my stats in any way?

Karma makes no difference whatsoever as long as you don't mind Three Dog and random NPCs bad mouthing you. And even if you wanna finish the game as a "good" or "evil" character, you don't have to worry much about it at the beginning of the game. In my case, I played like a freakin' klepto til about halfway through. Once I had a good stash of weapons, ammo, chems, etc. I didn't need to steal anymore so my karma just kinda balanced out based on the choices I made.

Dang guys, I'm only at level 2 and I'm getting my ass kicked by some thugs over at the Super market(doing the research side quest for Moair.) I need to get stronger and increase my strength. What is the best way to "grind" and level up in the beggining of this game? My HP is only at 230.

Sometimes the game throws some overpowered enemy in front of the Super Market, I would just avoid it. At first, its more about getting better weapons and ammo and leveling up in the process. Just make sure to focus on a weapon skill instead of spreading it out (at first). At the beginning, I usually try to quickly pump up my Small Arms skill.

The Talon Mercenaries are very hard, especially since they come at you when you're a lower level and you go to Super Duper Mart for Moira. V.A.T.S. is incredibly useful, and if you have powerful weapons, that'll help. The best way is to do side-quests, and do less fast travel. Whenever I can, I don't use it, and just walk across the wasteland, and fight anyone who's in my way.

Thanks for the replies guys it's a appreciated. I will keep that mind. I guess I can try and walk back and forth to the Supermarket and take out some more Raiders as they appear. There's a small matress in the Super Market that will completely heal you if you rest on it so that's at least useful.

OK a couple more questions:

1)Is there a place or item that will let me modify my S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats any time in the game? Like say I want to decrease strength and add those points to Explosives instead?

2)What are the best graphical settings to achieve a ROCK SOLID 60fps in this game? Here are my specs:

Windows XP 32bit
Intel Core2Duo E8500 OC'ed to 4.0Ghz
ATI Radeon 4870(just one. no crossfire)
3.2GB DDR2 Ram
1.2TB HDD

I had everything turned up to max and it was running smooth in the vault 101, until I got out into the wasteland and I notice the framerate started to dip between 40&50fps. So I turned AA, AF and Shadows completely off, and uninstalled the High Res Texture and Rocks pack. Turns out it didn't help too, much, as I'm still getting below 60fps out in the wasteland, and it especially gets choppy when engaging enemies in the Wasteland.

Is this normal for a machine with my specs? Are any of you getting a 100% ROCK SOLID and No flinching 60fps in the Wasteland portion of Fallout 3? If so, what are your specs and what graphic settings are you using?

Also, does Fallout 3 support Crossfire dual ATI Cards?

AFAIK, it's not possible the way you want it, in the unmodded game at least. You can only temporarily decrease your SPECIAL stats with items/clothing, not permanently. Increasing them permanently is possible of course, via the bobblehead figurines or certain perks.

BTW, Strength is a SPECIAL primary statistic, Explosives is a skill. The two are not the same, though the first category does have an effect on the latter (but not these particular examples, I think). But redistributing skill points isn't possible once you're out of the level-up menu.

Can't help you get it to 60fps, never played it at that. I need that draw-distance, man.

You're never going to get 60fps rock steady in this game. Ever.

But you can try some of the mods I use to improve performance further:

mAcOdIn thanks for the link.

Woohoo guys I made it to level 4!! :lol
I'm in the middle of trying to find a live mine to take back to Moire. I made it to the mine field but the only ones I've found are the ones blowing me to Smithereens

Anyway, I have two questions I'd like to know:

1)Before I make the trek to Galaxy News Radio, I was told to level up a bit. What level do you recommend being at before going there? 6? 7? Are the enemies tough down there?

2)I've had two occasions where the game CTD'ed on me the first one is when I was trying to enter
Mr. Burke's House. Soon as I approached his front door the game crashed. Could this be because I've already killed him?

The second time, was when I went to Springfield Highschool or whatever it's called, and discovered the basement tunnel. Upon encountering the numerous large ants down there, the game crashed while in the middle of me fighting them(via melee attacks, if that makes any difference).

Are these two crashes common? Did any of you experience them at these particular locations?

I have never crashed there, are you running any graphic or game changing mods?

Killing Mr. Burke should make no difference on whether you can enter his house or not.

The only bug I still have is related to one of the characters from one of the official DLC's showing up in Megaton and not being where she's supposed to be when I get to the quest.

Does it always crash for you there or was it a one time thing?

Here are a list of mods I'm running. Only one I'd consider game changing in a big way would probably be the Weapon Mod Kit and EVE mods.

Xepha's Dynamic Weather.esm
StreetLights.esm
GalaxyNewsRadio100[M].esp
WeaponModKits.esp
WMKAA12Shotgun.esp
EVE.esp
Heyy Adrian's Better Sounds
Hi-rez Terrain Pack
Hi-rez Rocks Pack

@ Mr Burke's House? Yeah, every single time. It's weird. Hopefully there isn't anything important in his house I need to get

Oh well, someone else told me it's not related to my mods so we'll see.

Hmm, that's weird, I don't know why it's crashing there.
There's nothing good in there at all, pretty anti climatic considering you need such a high lockpick skill to get in.

Just stumpled upon Oasis while roaming the northern perimeter of the map. This has to be the strangest part of a game I've seen in many years. Love it.

So I'm going to start my first playthrough of the vanilla Fallout 3 on PC. What are the best mods to have? I'm thinking along the lines of Stalkers 2009 mod. Anything?

Okay, so I recently got my hands on Fallout 3 GOTY for PS3 - picked it up for a ridiculously good price (8.80 CDN, yes I am bragging) - purchased it to replace the 360 version I loaned to an acquaintance I have not heard from in over a year.

Anyhoo, I never played any of the expansions, nor do I really know much about them - will I see any sort of enrichment in my gameplay if I immediately start a new game? I.E. New weapons, feats, enemies off the bat? Or is it all end game stuff?

With the exception of Broken Steel, any expansion can be played as soon as you enter the Wasteland. As such, whatever new items these expansions contain can be enjoyed whenever you want, but usually only after playing them (i.e. as rewards), not in the overall Wasteland from the vanilla game.

However, you will notice some differences long before the end-game, even in the vanilla Wasteland. As you level up, stronger enemies will appear; with the expansions loaded that just means that certain even stronger enemies will show themselves. So, if you explore a building for which the "boss" would have been the strongest ghoul in the vanilla game, in the GOTY it will be the more powerful ghoul included in one of the expansions, provided your level is high enough.

The upped level cap also takes effect immediately, but if you stick to the main quest you'll perhaps not even reach level 20, let alone level 30.

It's fucking amazing how you'll read a comment on some messageboard, then a few days later you can't even remember where you read it or not even which thread it was in! I don't even do drugs and my mind is still fucked :lol

Anyway, what I mean is, someone mentioned...maybe in this thread I don't remember, that
having Very Good Karma will award you with the strongest ally to accompany you in the game. Can someone refresh my memory and tell me who this characters is and when and where I'll get to recruit him/her?

You just need to have "Good" karma to get two of the companions (
Fawkes and Paladin Cross
). These two do tend to be a bit better then the "Evil" ones, but nothing beats Dogmeat, especially in the GOTY.

Huh? Did Dogmeat got buffed in the GOTY? I didn't bother to take him during my GOTY playthrough, because I found him pretty weak in the vanilla version.

If you have a decent PC, I'd recommend that version. It's a cheaper GOTY, and you have literally dozens of high quality mods to use.

I had it on the trip, and turned it in for the PC version.

I'm sure this is covered on page 126 of this thread, but if you have a pc able to run oblivion, will it run fallout 3 at similar settings? I was thinking of picking this up for my xbox, but I like the sound of getting some mods on.

He levels with you in the GOTY, whether you have him with you or not. By the end of the game he's practically invincible, and if not, you can get replacements (puppies!).
