The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Yup, in Megaton. As you're facing the bar (where the ghoul kid is with the cash register), Burke should be sitting in the corner to your right. He'll wave his arm if you look at him. At least that's how it worked for me. Maybe he's only there certain times of the day.

ok. i will try this when i get back to town

In non-VATS combat, your skill level with that weapon determines how wildly your shots vary. With a very high skill, they'll land right where the reticle is. With a low skill, they'll land anywhere within a wide radius around the reticle.

Really now? Does it determine damage as well? (Bonus I mean)

Also which category do hunting rifle, sniper rifle fall under?

I didn't expect to get energy weapons so early so I put a lot into small guns :(

Oh and if I have the Suit dude(Burke) kill
Lucas Simms
, can I still blow up Megaton?

I want his gun pretty bad.

I might be wrong - I haven't exactly done extensive testing. That was all just my perceptions.

It seems a little counter-intuitive, but "small guns" incorporates SMGs, rifles, Snipers, AK-47s, etc. Energy weapons are self-explanatory. "Bug guns" is for REALLY big guns, like the minigun.

Yeah, that is what I figured, but still.

Tweaked "uGrid" Screenshots:

The uGrid is an INI setting that allows you to adjust how the game loads its grids, and when changed from the normal will result in greater detail on the horizon. You can drastically improve image quality, but you will significantly lose performance.

Pros:

1. Better visual quality.
2. See enemies and NPCs from further away.

Cons:

1. Significant performance decrease. I went from 60fps outside to around 35-40fps outside.
2. Memory hog.

From the Oblivion Tweak Guide:

[Cell Visibility/Loading Variables]

uGridsToLoad=5 - Increasing the uGridsToLoad value (always in odd steps of 5,7,9,11 etc.) will increase the number of grids around the character in which full texture data will be loaded up and visible as he/she wanders around. This clearly improves visual quality - removing blurry distant LOD textures for example when set to 11 or above - however it also noticeably increases loading times and loading pauses, introduces visual anomalies (particularly around water areas) and reduces performance significantly. Interestingly, as uGridsToLoad increases, the system automatically increases the uExterior Cell Buffer value to accommodate the greater cell data. Furthermore, if you use an even value, the engine will automatically raise it to the nearest odd value (e.g. entering 10 means the engine will set it to 11). On balance the default value of 5 is a good compromise between performance and loading pauses.

Importantly: Instead of using the above variable to improve distant textures, particularly the blurry land textures, it is strongly recommended that you instead use the Landscape LOD Replacement Mods as detailed in the Patches & Mods section of this guide on Page 4. These mods provide far less of a performance decrease for a similar effect, and don't result in the types of glitches which altering the uGridsToLoad variable can bring with it.

uGridDistantTreeRange=15

uGridDistantCount=25

The above settings when combined can be used to increase the visibility of distant trees. Increasing the uGridDistantTreeRange setting by itself has no visible impact. Yet if you also increase the uGridDistantCount value as well, you will start to see trees further out towards the horizon, on mountain ranges for example. Very high values will reduce performance and dramatically increase level loading times. For example experiment with a value of 200 for both to see the image quality and performance impact on your system, though I would recommend you leave these at their default for the best performance/image quality balance.

uGridDistantTreeRangeCity=4

uGridDistantCountCity=4

The above settings work in much the same way as uGridDistantTreeRange and uGridDistantCount except they apply to tree visibility within cities.

Tweaked Water Screenshot

Pros:

Water that reflects nearly everything (even enemies, their projectiles, you name it)

Cons:

Slight performance decrease.

From the Oblivion Tweak Guide:

[Water Variables]

bUseWaterReflectionsMisc=1

bUseWaterReflectionsStatics=1

bUseWaterReflectionsTrees=1

bUseWaterReflectionsActors=1

The above settings control the additional reflections possible on the surface of water areas. When set to 1, they allow nearby trees, objects, and other characters to reflect in the water. Note that this reduces FPS in busy areas, and that the additional reflections are only visible when you and the objects are closer to the water.

uDepthRange=125 - This option controls the depth of water visibility from above. The higher the value, the clearer the water appears, however some water glitches may also start becoming apparent, and FPS may be reduced as well.

bUseWaterDepth=1 - If set to 0, water becomes completely opaque (i.e. you cannot see into it at all from above). This can resolve some of the visual glitches which result from changing the uGridsToLoad value, and can also improve FPS, at the cost of some realism.

uNumDepthGrids=3 - Also appears to control the depth of water visible, with lower values making water less transparent. If set too high this results in glitches, but if set to 1 can resolve issues with the uGridsToLoad value being higher than 5 and improve FPS as well.

bUseWaterLOD=1 - If set to 0 removes all water.

fSurfaceTileSize=2048.0000 - Controls the size of the water texture grids. The smaller this value, the smaller the size of texture tiles, and the faster and more tightly packed the water ripples will appear.

Note:

When trying any of these ini tweaks, make sure you have the following settings:

uInterior Cell Buffer=16
uExterior Cell Buffer=102

This is for systems with more than 2 gigs of RAM.

If the combat is disc rolled does that mean you can run up to a guy with a shotgun, fire and still miss?

You can miss what you aimed at, but hit something else. The closer you are to your target, the higher your accuracy. Objects in the way will greatly lower your odds of hitting the target.

So does Fallout 3 need to be tweaked through fallout.ini or falloutprefs.ini? The Tweakguides guy said it's the latter.

I've been doing it from Fallout.ini and it seems to work just fine. Did he give a reason?

Chiggs said:

He said something about how fallout.ini is just the default config. Shrug. I've tweaked it through there and it seems to affect the game.

Btw, I tweaked those same settings yesterday and still get 60 FPS.

If you want your game smooth as fuck on the max settings, and you have a good enough rig, change iFPSClamp to 60, turn vsync on and use D3DOverrider for triple buffering. Constant 60 FPS both inside and outside. Why? I have no idea. Without that stuff, I still get about 60 FPS indoors, but about 45 FPS outdoors. With them, 60 everywhere.

Did anyone do the quest "Head of State"? I picked it up and was immediately told a mission critical NPC was dead (not by me) and failed it outright : /

Looking for honest opinions here, should I buy this over R2 if I can only get the flawed and glitchy (from what I hear) PS3 version?

Zeliard said:

So you have ugridstoload at 11 or higher (default at max is 5) and you're still getting 60fps? What CPU are you using? If you read those comments clearly, he's just listing the defaults...those aren't exactly the actual tweaks.

Dude, when your machine isn't really rendering a 60fps and you have the clamp on, you and the game are moving in molasses. Next time FRAPS shows around 40 fps, jump in the air and notice the delay. It was the exact same thing with Oblivion.

Can anyone tell me where the source of the

Also, just like to say I just got my CE in the mail today...the lunchbox is SO AWESOME.

If it looks more interesting to you, then sure.

I wouldn't worry too much about the PS3 version. Other than some very small graphical stuff, the only bad bug seems to be the notification freeze, which as I understand you can turn off until a patch comes.

I'd say go Fallout!

Q6600 @ 2.4. Nothing special.

But actually, nevermind. Gridstoload is still at 5. I did change the rest of them, though.

I would personally pick Fallout 3, because there are plenty of FPS games to choose from, and you can always just skip R2 and get KZ2 next spring.

Didn't play R2 yet (only the beta, it's fine) and played this game on PS3. It's the only version I played and I'm TOTALLY blown away. It's just a great achievement. Yes, there are some small issues but it didn't stand the gameplay in the way. The game is totally amazing, GOTY, classic material. And I'm saying this as a PS3-only player.

o.. i didn't know this was a "post pictures of the game we're all playing.. and tell us what video card you have thread".

I think I remember picking up a key from the father and before that I walked by the shack with the locked door....I was running around that neighborhood shooting ants for like 30 minutes :lol

I've not really started the main quest yet, but when can I expect to get a hefty amount of caps? I'm struggling to stay over the 100 mark. Repairing my weapons and buying ammo constantly doesn't exactly help.

Cool, this is the kind of response I was looking for. Glad to see SOMEONE'S enjoying it on PS3. :lol

Hahah...that's why in a forum I frequent we've started making PC and Console threads for every multi platform game. It was getting too tedious to trudge through the specs, benchmarks and troubleshooting so for people that actually wanted to discuss the game the Console threads are the only place to go. They also seem to have a better tone because console gamers don't seem to be as critical of minor flaws. The 360 vs PS3 arguments are nowhere as bad as the PC vs Console ones.

Yeah caps aren't too hard to come by from what little I've played. Not too far along the point you are after the ants. Selling loot and what not will get you quite a bit.

People talking specs are doing so in the context of the game. You and Gumby are just whining about nothing, so you're more off-topic than anyone else.

ya.. we wont let minor details ruin a game for us

I'm not whining about shit, I'm saying how we solved this issue elsewhere. Some people don't like trudging through pages of specs and benchmarks to talk about the game.

Played a couple of hours, it hasn't grabbed me yet. My fears about playing Fallout straight after Fable 2 played out pretty much as expected. After the accessibility of that game this just feels like running into a brick wall head first, 5 minutes after leaving megaton I ran into a supermutant with a rocket launcher, managed to shoot the launcher out of his hands but I'm so god damned weak he had time to run over to it, pick it up again, and proceed to blow the shit out of me.

Also decided not to blow up Megaton, because I watched that video, so I told the sheriff and
He ran up to the saloon, tried to arrest the guy, and got shot in the back of his head for his troubles, the guy who wants you to nuke the place then told me I'd regret turning him down, so I thought rather than let him leave and set his goons on me I'd just shoot him in the back of the head, which worked great, but his goons greeted me at the supermarket anyway :-/

is this coming from someone who found oblivion boring? If so how does this improve on that game.

if I get it I will prob purchase pc version. Those pics by chiggs look stunning by the way.

Im definitely getting R2 first (enjoyed the first more than oblivion), but I might check this.

You know this is a PC franchise right? Posting specs is part of a PC game thread, which this is.

Get off your high horse.

This is a general Fallout topic, kids, and that includes the PC. If you don't like it, go to a console forum, and stop filling the thread up with your mindless whining. Chiggs makes one post and the console fanboys get their panties in a wad. It's fairly embarrassing.

What makes so much more embarrassing for these whiners is that Chiggs wrote a pretty fucking excellent post.

Well yes, I did find Oblivion not that great at all.

The game is really different than Oblivion. The setting is different, and way more interesting to me, and the combat is different. The VATS works extremely well. Also, the enemies don't level up with you.

It's just a different game than Oblivion and improves on everything that was criticized in that game. It's awesomeness all the way. Play it NOW.

I was walking near some place called "Will'im" or something like that and I found a Junkie and talked to him. After leaving some kid ran up to me and started the quest

Yeah props to chiggs for the post.. lots of usefull information for the PC users (including me) playing the game, If you dont like the spec posting how about not reading the post.

I always look for chiggs posts as their great for the PC gamers on gaf :D
