The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

So, how do you disarm mines before they blow you up? As soon as you hear the sound, it seems like you have 1 second until your legs are flying in the air. I managed to disarm one by accident by mashing E.

approach them while crouched and the "disarm" thing
will come up.

You generally need to know there's a mine there. Then you can creep up when crouched and disarm it real quick, when in range.

When you don't know it's there... well... you have about a second to back the F up :lol

How do I get a body part crippled?
Make sure you're full health, jump from a moderately high distance, heal yourself using stimpacks, then jump from high up again. You should cripple one of your legs that way.

Man I really need a house to stash stuff in.

get one. Either Megaton or Ten Penny. They are pretty sweet. Just made myself a bunch of bottle cap mines on my work bench. Just about to drop them off in Paradise Falls. Its gonna be fun.

\/\/ I feel you Sprunchy. Never really could grasp games with so much character customization. Never could decide what to do in Fo2 or Morrowind. This game has sucked me in though. Really shouldn't be this much fun to roam around a wasteland alone. Never too far away from an interesting place to clear out either. I think its a good thing I didn't play more than a few hours of Oblivion. Lots of people say it feels like Oblivion but I don't know that haha.

I hated oblivion, felt too much like a single player WoW with more flaws then enjoyment opportunities.

Loving Fallout 3 about to hit level 10 with 8+ hours played, amazing game. Surprise of the forever considering I thought it was going to be Oblivion with guns.

Time to go to sleep so I can play more.

GODDAMN IT, BETHESDA! GAME-BREAKING FUCKING BUG!

Right after the Enclave attack Project Purity, I'm escorting these fucking Scientists through these tunnels. One douche bag named Garza gets killed, but stupid Dr. Li keeps talking about how he has a bad heart and needs medicine. HE IS DEAD AND I CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO GET HER TO COME WITH ME.

My last non-quick save is from yesterday! That's nearly 6 hours of play time gone. Does anyone have a save near this location they can send me?

I'm feeling you right now man...I just hit one and it's annoying me that I can't complete this mission now.

So does the game get better after
you get your room from Penny
? I'd like to think so since I'm always getting low HP when in fights since my guns don't do jack shit to any of my enemies.

Sad, guess I'm not getting this one. I'd consider getting it over Steam, but at 7GB, it would take several consecutive days to download it (if I never shut off my PC).
Just buy it in the store, it's almost embarrassing how paranoid you're being... amazon ratings mean nothing.

The game has a disc check, it checks to make sure your Fallout 3 CD is in the drive, that's it!. I have it installed right now, I have it on my Laptop to, I have Nero, Daemon Tools, etc... it doesn't screw up anything.

Bethesda:
"For Fallout 3’s copy protection on PC, we use the same security model as we did for Oblivion - a simple disc check. We only use SecuRom’s disc check functionality for copy protection. We do NOT limit the number of installs. We do NOT use online authentication or any other SecuROM functionality except for a disc check when you install the game and when you launch the game. We do not install any other programs and we don’t have anything that runs in the background while you’re playing the game."

Woo-hoo! Got past the bug. Fast-travelled out of the area, bought 10 stimpaks, went back in and the game corrected itself.

just started playing today. feels like oblivion with guns. at least, it has some of the same faults as oblivion.

Is it worth it to get the Megaton house, or is the alternate one better? I am doing the Megaton quests for now to not miss them, but not having a house is really frustrating. I'm using an abandonned house to store stuff, but I'm afraid it will disappear.

I keep putting off deciding whether to destroy Megaton because I'm afraid of missing some quests. Does anyone have an idea of what specific quests I need to have done before I destroy the city?

Just finished. Even with having spent some time on side missions there are entire areas of the game I haven't seen yet (Tenpenny Tower). Unlike Mass Effect the side missions in this game are fun so I'll probably go back to do the rest of them at some point. Definitely one of my top games of the year.
How many hours did you clock in?

Also, how the Hell do I get to that history museum - or whatever it's called?

Spoilers about ghouls and Tenpenny Tower:

So, I helped Roy Phillips take over the tower and... it's just three fucking NPC ghouls now including him, and a bunch of Feral's running around. Is this how it stays? Cause, as much as I didn't like the stiffs in Tenpenny... I need some sort of main town hub. Does anyone else move in or anything? Are the ferals always there?

Also, I never found Burke or the Owner... did they get away?

Well, are you putting most of your skill points in Small Guns?

A lot of people seem to be in the same boat as you. They aren't doing any damage, they're always running out of ammo, etc.

I'm FAAAR from a "pro" gamer or a Fallout 3 pro, but I haven't had any of these problems. In fact I've felt overpowered against most enemies ever since level 3 or so.

Just put a minimum of 15 points into small guns every level, until you hit like ~90. Then you should be good.

Yeah exactly what I did^^ Plus Gun Nut and Gunslinger but I knew I only wanted to use small guns the whole time. I'm about to kick up the difficulty just because have so many resources at this point. I rarely ever use drugs and find enough food to heal myself most of the time.

Should be putting most points into a weapon skill from the beginning (15 is all you have). I never had much trouble after lvl 3 or so. You actually find heavy and energy weapons pretty early on so you can even start with those.

Fuck off this is GOTY...its a lame co-op game with lamer AI, no skill, just shoot those bullets and hope you spray them all before you die...

Spray yeah they are calling this a "spiritual" successor to CS. I dont' think spraying is going to be very effective. Not to mention I don't think you will have much ammo.

I've been seriously thinking about going out to go get this game...

Would you guys recommend it for a person who loved Fable 2 and liked Oblivion a bit?

Yes, thats me exactly. I actually wasnt a huge fan of Oblivion but i am loving Fallout.

INT x 2 + 3 from the perk

10 INT all the way ;)

Should of toned down LUK for 5 more points, but it's too late for that and the criticals aren't bad.

*For all the people saying that their guns suck or whatever, I hope you are putting points into repair as that will boost your damage by about 40-50% on what you find.

I think I'll split my points between energy and small guns now, mainly on small guns.
Lockpick is maxed too :)

Started yesterday, and so far, it's been a good ride.

I have a question, though.
What's the easiest way yo get the mine from Minefield?
I don't have any detection device, so should I just skip that quest and come back for it later(it's the stupid book thingy)

Oh, and I love how easy the super mutants are to kill with the Hunting rifle...*loves hunting rifle*

What's the point of Vault 106?

I found a key in a desk next to a computer terminal, but it doesn't seem to open anything. I suppose it could have opened the doors I picked, but there were some Hard level locks which I couldn't pick, but the key doesn't open them. And I guess you just explore the vault and find out that the residents were gassed? I haven't run across a sidequest for this area yet.

One other question. What the hell was the purple tint that would appear sometimes and making enemies nearly invisible/translucent. I can only assume it was a due to the gas in the vault

Oh, and I got my first sniper rifle today. Holy shit, that thing is the shit. Love taking out raiders from distance.

Well that guy there does lots of damage, just run to the center of the playground, then grab a mine on your way out.

I'm liking the game a lot more now that I've put some time into it. The A.I. in most respects is an improvement over Oblivion's. Tagging along with the BoS en route to Galaxy News Radio was great, unlike the horrific battle sequences in Oblivion like Kvatch. I'm playing on hard and my character has little combat focus, with high int, charisma, and perception with science, medicine and speech tagged, although I'm pumping points into repair, barter, and energy weapons as well. Some parts have been tough with my character build, like getting to the museum from GNR and doing the Those! quest, but it's been manageable. Energy weapons kind of suck in the early game, because there isn't access to much but the crappy Laser Pistol, but I think investing in the skill will pay off towards end game. With 10 INT + Comprehension and Educated perks, I'm getting a ton of skill points and should have a really powerful character once I get through the early levels.

so have the tech heads here assembled a definitive fallou3.ini cfg already? I can play the game at "High" settings with a rock solid 60 fps in all areas, but if I try the "Ultra" setting it just goes mad from 35 to 60 even in the tiniest, empty indoors location with no apparent reason.

(Q6600 / 9800GTX+ / 1360x768)

edit: Chiggs, could you please share your tweaked .ini? thanks!

LOVE THIS GAME.

Can't say enough about how I feel right now but wow.

Finally, a game that out-STALKERs STALKER. And an action RPG with guns that feels intuitive and tactical. VATS is probably my favorite battle system in an RPG that I can remember.

I'm also really warming up to the graphics in this game. Here are pics shrank down from 1920x1200, max everything, 4xAA, 16xAF, vanilla INI.

LOVE. THIS. GAME.

Hey guys, where the hell is dogmeat? I'm at level 11 but I haven't found him yet. I'm just now doing one of the first story missions where
I'm fighting alongside some Brotherhood of Steel fellas trying to find Galaxy News Radio.
Did I miss him or will I find him if I keep playing?

Pimpbaa said:
Dogmeat died on me and I didn't care. Was tired of babysitting him and his shitty animations which destroyed any illusion that he was a real dog (like say your dog in fable 2, which seemed so real). Still love the game tho.
I too was sick of his animations and his penchant for blocking doorway exits. So I left him in my house with Mr Butlertron and my bobblehead collection. I like to think he wanders around Megaton while I'm off and finds shit to eat.

Umm, so, my inventory size isnt increasing as I level up. Anyone know about way to increase it? Maybe theres a perk later on?

There's a perk once you hit level 8 that boosts your storage space by 50. Levelling up your strength also increases your capacity.

hold down the "toggle third person view" button when in third person and you can zoom the camera in and out and swing it around with your right stick/mouse

About disarming mines: You don't need to be crouched to disarm them. When you get near, they'll start beeping. Just activate the mine before it explodes and you'll disarm it. The higher your Explosives skill, the more time you'll have before the mine explodes. Early on, my characters would shoot mines from a distance to blow them up safely. The laser pistol & rifle are good for this.

Fun trick: get a bunch of frag mines. Find a bunch of unexploded cars. Place a trail of mines about 5' apart or so, starting at the cars, and leading away. Then find a good (safe) vantage point, and shoot the mine furthest from the cars, and watch the chain reaction :)

lol tks for heads up. Now Im playing Fallout: Dead Space mode!:lol

So do you have to find everything on your own? I'm at that school now but I have to find Megaton, where do I go?

Its not hard dude. Figure it out. If youre stuck now, god help you.

I'm in Vault 106 now. It's friggin creepy and playing with my head. Had to quit and take a break...

Damn you developers!
Let me out! I'm going as insane as the inhabitants

The third-person view is actually bearable when it's in Dead Space mode.

Although when you zoom out as far as possible it feels like I'm in some sort of debug mode. The world just doesn't feel like it should be able to be viewed that way.

Exactly what I thought. You cant see the stupid jumps and bizarre walk cycle. Its actually kinda cool.

(although Im all about the 1st person)
