The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

Well, that's totally not true. The gaming world is ridiculously big. And for some side quests you do have to travel that stuff already. It feels like a bit too much sometimes, because I do get problems with health supplies on these big travels through dangerous territories.
I generally just fast travel to the nearest location and then walk from there. Some of the walks are long, but I think they are necessary to give you the feeling of how desolate the environment is.

EB, Best buy, etc. are not selling the game yet. I know they have it though >:(

So I called the rental places in town, my usual saviors when it comes to breaking street dates. Roger's Video only has the ps3 version, which they are more than willing to sell. I called Blockbuster, and they have one CE copy. I asked could I come in right now and pick it up, she said sure, but the girl must've noticed the street date last second, cause she took it back and said I had to wait till the 28th.

Guess it's a good thing though, some time to finish up fable 2 tonight before I return it.

Yeah I fast travelled EVERYWHERE in Oblivion, but as you said, the long walks should engage me in the atmosphere of the Fallout world. I'm going to make a vow to never fast travel in this game.

In Fallout 2, you were actually able to get a car (which was a bitch of a quest, if I remember correctly). I guess there's no equivalent to a 'mount' in Fallout 3 though... I guess it makes sense with the world though.

I've been playing it like 15 hours now and it's fine. There's always whining with minor differences.
Unless you're a real nitpicker, the game is well. Not stumbled into any big problems. Yes, there is the occasional framedrop, but it's more in loading situations, the game has a consistent framerate in combat and whatever, I've not encountered a single time that the framedrop consistently dropped in a difficult situation.
So just go for it if it's the only platform you can get it on. It's WELL worth it.

I actually am getting more and more into the game, I'm sidequesting A LOT and I'm actually enjoying it immensely. The more I play with it, the more positive I get about VATS as well. I'm playing it for, as said, more than 15 hours and I keep using VATS everytime I can and I'm not bothered by the slo-mo stuff at all, while I thought I would really be. That's because you're not fighting all the time, and the moments that you fight, it's nice to see some spectacular action.

I think the universe is rather interesting as well, and the radio stations (I've got 2 of the 3 now) are totally great. I both LOVE them.

So, I didn't really like Oblivion but I'm enjoying this greatly. It is Oblivion with guns, but in a good way. I also see that you really get stronger than some enemies. For example, I was in an area in the beginning where I shouldn't be and could barely kill two enemies there. Now I can slaughter this enemy type a lot easier.

This is really a game where you spend countless hours into and also want to do that. The more I play it, the more I like it. Although I do think the world is a bit too big at times to travel on foot (fast-travelling aside, but travelling to the first time somewhere) and I think it could have been more open as well. There's a lot of obstacles, like buildings that you can't pass through, that hinder your way.

But all in all, it delivers. It's a game where you really have to take your time for, but it does keep you playing.

How exactly does AP work? Does it just continually recharge when you're not in VATS? Do you find that VATS is overpowered?

No equivalent of a mount, but there is fast travel so it negates the need for it. I think they could've done well with a motorbike or some kind of buggy, but I don't find it necessary.

It does recharge whilst you aren't using VATS. VATS is in no way overpowered because of the limited AP. When fighting the tougher enemy types you will have to shoot/run in real time.

Is there a perk or something else that increases your AP limit as you go through the game, or increases its recharge rate?

To be perfectly frank, I do not like the real-time combat from what I've seen, but I do think VATS is very cool (and not just because of the gore, though it's nice, but mostly because it's a throwback to the first two Fallouts' turn-based, target aiming system). So I'm going to use VATS as much as possible, and would like to keep the real-time stuff to a minimum.

I can't remember, though certain chems definitely do. Agility determines the AP base from what I remember.

It's fine. Early on it seems pretty bad because your stats are so low - for instance trying to shoot an enemy 20m away with a hunting rifle with Small Arms skill of 25 isn't going to be pleasant, but later on in the game it is just as effective as VATS.

I wasn't going to bring this up, but where is that GTA IV DLC?

Who knows. Making purchase decisions based on DLC is a bad idea. I have never paid for DLC and I doubt I ever will. Full download games, I'm cool with that. Most of the DLC out there is as expensive as a full download game, which I would rather have.

I must admit, zombie apocalypse GTAIV sounds interesting though.

I'm a early 360 owner who invested 100+ hours into Oblivion and literally didn't touch the main quest the second I got out of the sewer, I wanted to save it for last and funnily enough I never got to LAST :lol

Then my 360 died and I switched to PS3 and was so happy that I had a console which felt solid and reliable. I had become used to hearing my 360 chug away as it loaded new areas or sounds, the far too regular crashes and the worry-inducing stutters when you load or navigate menus.

That reliability (even if its only in my imagination) is worth buying a supposedly inferior version. I actually have Fallout 3 preordered for the PS3, but I have to admit I am open minded about a) the PS3's shortcomings and b) the superiority of the 360 version.

SO - I bought a new 360 a few days ago for Fable II and the oncoming onslaught of gears of war 2. I am slightly dismayed to find that the chugging, louder than comfortable disc drive and fans are still present during my plays of Fable II (console was made in August 2008!)

Seriously considered changing my pre-order, especially as the FPS aspect seems to play a bigger role than I expected, I'd hoped to play excusively in VATs. But I suppose I am measuring:

PS3 vs 360 game performance vs PS3 vs 360 hardware performance

there are question marks over the performance of the games, with the consensus seeming to vote for 360. But if the 360 version is going to chug and crash the way Oblivion did, or cause me to constantly save because every button press feels like it could bring on a game-heart-attack, then I would far prefer the reliability of the PS3 experience. and when I ask myself if this is rendered obsolete because the PS3 version may be just as unreliable, I just can't bring myself to believe in that scenario!

I've never had the 360 version of Fallout 3 crash. Not once.

So what's the word on the performance differences between PS3, PC, and 360? What are the pros and cons on each version?

No word yet, but it's the Oblivion engine. On console we can expect a slightly improved performance over Oblivion, maybe decreased loading with installs.

The PC version will probably run slightly worse or the same as Oblivion on similar hardware. It appears that they didn't add any new effects, except maybe motion blur (which would be a toggle, as it is in every PC game that has it), and better character models (which is more of a texture memory issue).

This is kinda silly to ask but it is a tipping point for me since the mods will be AWOL for a bit on PC.

Does the PC version have achievements? How do I go about linking my system to my xbox account?

Yes to achievements, and if the process is the same as in Halo 2 PC you'll get a prompt once you launch the game to put in your account info and it'll automatically link it up, quick and painless procedure.

It does have achievements, but I have no idea how you link it to your Xbox account. I would guess there will be some menu option to enter your Xbox Live e-mail for it to give achievements to.

Man the hacking looks hard :lol

Where did you see it? Nevermind, I don't want to see. I find going into games knowing as little as possible makes them way more fun in general.

By the way, does it take along time to reach level 20? I hope so :)
In the 22 hours it took me to get to the end the first time around I was only Level 16. You could probably reach Level 20 in under 30 hours I'd say.

20 was the max level?

Zzoram said:
It's like that in a lot of old PC RPGs.
Damn I was wishing there wouldn't be a cap. Was looking forward to being like level 148 after 300+ hours.

Zeliard said:
How many total NPCs can you recruit?
At once? I don't know because I only had 1 at a time. During my play through I had 3 different NPCs, though as I said earlier I did very little sidequesting so I don't know how much I missed.

That screws with the balance. The reason some RPGs have low level caps is because everything is perfectly balanced (ideally) to gel effectively with that limit.

Yeah I guess... I blame the fact that I haven't played many old school (non-japanese) RPGs :)

Less trees = better performance.

Zzoram said:
Actually, you might be right. The trees and wavy grass KILLED performance.

Yeah, forgot about the grass. I think we could be looking at a game that performs much better than Oblivion (which is still somewhat of a benchmark).

K. Thanks for the responses.

And it looks like they removed shadows. It's very strange. Seriously, it better not be like that for the PC version. There's absolutely no reason it should be. I could understand it for consoles, maybe, as a form of optimization. Gives it a strangely flat look, though.
