The Official Fallout 3 thread of post-apocalyptic proportions!

I guess I wasnt the only one who had this glitch- I saw it pop up in multiple forums, the solution, weird enough as it is, if you fight butch, beat him unconscious and then when you sit down the test works.....

god, this game better be good, I had a game stopping glitch in the first 10 mins....
Yeah, I had this same damn glitch and restarted like 5 times. Last time I was like; 'Fuck it, teacher dude, how about you give me the answers to the test?' just so I could get past that part. I was wondering what the hell was up and if I was doing something wrong.

This was on the PS3 version btw, don't know what version everyone else is experiencing this glitch on, if it's across the board, or only PS3. But that's what I did to get past it.

So far I'm enjoying the game a lot, and enjoying how different it is from Elder Scrolls.

That is until I took my first quest after leaving the Vault in Megaton...which eventually led to a cult of vampires. :lol

Still lovin' the the game though.

:lol

really? I was planning on playing this way, this is bad news.

Yea, it really is a pity that Bethesda couldn't pull this off. Stupid how they showed off the top down view in those vids; the game may as well be unplayable that way. It's really only useful for checking out how your character looks.

Even Bethesda have said it's impossible to play the whole game third person. You can't see the level of detail required for scavenging the environment with anything but a first person perspective. There's stuff everywhere. How could you pick up individual items on a shelf in a third person perspective? The character would be in front of the camera.

That is weird when I walked up to the lockbox it gave me the message "open with key". There is also a locked door upstairs I cannot get into.

Maybe I'm missing something? All of the doors upstairs in the saloon for me are open, and I don't mean unlocked I mean wide open. And there are no lockboxes anywhere in the saloon aside from the cold storage fridge thing directly behind the bar, which says I need a key but apparently Moriarty's key doesn't work on it.

The character stands on the left side of the screen. That's not to say that the 3rd person perspective isn't somewhat shitty (due primarily to the animation) but it's not impossible to play that way.

On another night, I played the game for 4 hours straight tonight. As amazing as a lot of the games coming out nowadays are, that's almost unheard of for me. Goddamn, the world is just so incredibly compelling. I'm basically falling asleep at my desk right now and I still had to pull myself away from it.

I couldn't do it for more than a few minutes at a time. And I couldn't care less about the animation. It's clearly meant to be played in first person perspective.

Is there any benefit of picking the same perk twice? Can you even do that? It's allowing me to select it, but I don't want to be stuck with some pointless decision so some guidance would be helpful. :)

Which one? Many of them have multiple ranks, you can tell from the description what these different ranks do.

I think so too (I'm playing like 80/20 1st/3rd) but it's not totally unplayable. That was my point. And, FWIW, I think you could quite easily play the whole game that way...if seeing your character is that important to you.

Well for my first perk I chose Swift Learner and it was nice getting the extra XP, so I was either going to pick it again or go with Gun Nut.

I still think you'd have issues picking up smaller items like stimpacks from shelving and desks.

If the game lets you stack the perk it is obviously beneficial. Stacking Swift Learner early on is probably not a bad idea.

Wow this thread doubled in size since launch :lol

I'm about 8 hours in, level 6. Everything is awesome. It feels a lot like Oblivion but really captures the premise of FO. The load times are nothing, especially compared to the last game I beat, Fable 2. As a huge FO and Elder Scrolls fan I'm glad the game isn't broken and everything works great.

Grief - > - "Hotkeys" on the 360's d-pad can be finicky for the diagonal mappings
- Graphics are a bit flat
- Clunky real time gunplay some of the time
- Voice acting can be bad at times

Other than that I can't see much wrong with the game. Although my FO builds from back in the day are thrown out of wack with the lack of traits and addition of intense training as a perk!

mine was on the ps3 as well, another solution to the problem that is coming up in the forums is to save the game during the goat test and then reload the game to the test save, supposedly the test will start up when you load the save

I just think I'll do that then. I've pretty much boosted my Repair and Small Guns using the points system so holding off on Gun Nut shouldn't be detrimental to my goals as far as play style. Thanks for the advice.

This game is very good!

But I'm stuck on one early quest: Where the hell is the
family?

HINT
Talk to the bridge dude, he'll mark some spots on your map.

SPECIFIC
Go to the metro station north east of the settlement, and look for a sewer grate while inside.

Just got out of the vault and I saw some merchants. He had some pretty good stuff for sale but I dont have any money : s. So I shot his head off and took his items. I even got a revolver type gun and a brahmin is following me now :D .

Kill the Brahmin. That's where he keeps the rest of the inventory.

Thanks, I have been sort of wandering around the general area wondering what to do for a while.

Evan mentioned Ian was seen around the lake/docks/river with the Family, and the crazy lady was talking about 'the boys' out fishing, so I have been searching all along the waters and getting gang raped by crab people. Hate them so much!

The first time I sat at the desk wondering what was going on and just looking around the room. After a minute or so, I thought the whole 'keep your eyes on your own paper' was important, so I focused the camera to only look at the desk. Then waited some more. Then I was like - maybe if I stare at the screen?

I swear I wasted a good 15 minutes before I finally reloaded the first time.

At least I had a save right before the fight with Bruce so I didn't have to replay the whole game. Really frustrating tho.

Grabbed the PC lunchbox for $69.99 plus free $10 giftcard at Circuit City tonight. Life is good. Installed it, played a bit on the HTPC at 720p with the 360 controller and logged into Live. Nice!

Those things are a pain in the ass.
I use mines on them. Sometimes you gotta check all the dialog to get places marked and then check there.

this game rocks, I need to go play it.

The ideal situation really. :]

So how's combat from the 3rd person perspective?

It's fine when you're using VATS. Thing is, after you use up your AP, you need to fight in realtime while it regens and it's a bit awkward to aim in third person. You can switch instantly though. Melee combat is similar to 3rd person Oblivion from what I can tell. I'm not doing melee though...

Megaton questions:
I'm trying to disarm the bomb. I talked to the Sheriff about Mister Burke's plan. Sheriff tried to arrest him and got killed. Can I still finish the quest? Who do I talk to now?

I'm really, really impressed, Bethesda. Beautiful effort, all around, from top to bottom. I dealt with the quiz freeze (PS3 version), but saving then loading initiated the quiz, as promised.

Random thought: I think I'm going to sell my CE and focus on finishing the ol' backlog first. I don't know why I bought this in the first place (day-one packrat syndrome), but I can already tell it's just such an engrossing game that it'll be perfect to pick up during a game-drought. It's comforting to know this is waiting in the wings...

I could do without the radroaches. The last time I enjoyed killing digital bugs was Mario Paint.

Just go and do it. Depending on your skill you may need to buy some Mentats from Leo Stahler first. The Sherriff's son will give you your reward.

You dont even have to kill the brahmin to get the inventory. When you kill the merchant, you will get a key to access the inventory. Plus,if you dont kill the brahmin, you get to keep more inventory since it can carry it for you :D .

The draw distance in this game is amazing... running it on an X2 5000+, HD4670 and get an average of 40 frames per second. Everything is set to max, 4xAA and 15xAF.

Interesting. The only time I attempted it the brahmin ran off so I had no choice.

3rd person mode is so shitty :(

It really is!

I mean, I tried for the first hour to really make it work and get used to it....but it's like the game (or devs) wanna punish you for using it.

it would be wonderful if the mod community in the future could really make it work

But yeah, it's like Bethesda started on it and just said fuck it

Can anyone sign into GFW Live through the steam version? It keeps telling me I need to enter the product key but there is nowhere to do so?
Working fine for me though steam. When you start the game steam gives you the cd key you need to type into that product key for GFW.

So kinda funny but kinda angering story time:

I entered the Megaton armory, even though the door was red. I wasn't intending on stealing anything - I just wanted to see what was in there. Inside was a defense robot. He started firing on me, so I left right away. The robot followed me OUTSIDE the room, into town. So I went back in the building, thinking that I could kill it when it followed me in, so the townspeople wouldn't see me and get upset.

...only apparently, a couple of them had already seen me. Jericho and Moriarty entered the room, WITH the robot, and all three start firing on me.

"no big deal" I think to myself - I'll just revert to an old save. ONLY THE GAME HAD SAVED MOMENTS BEFORE - WHEN I ENTERED THE ROOM. Every restart, the three of them would enter the room in a matter of seconds. I was going to lose over an hour of gametime if I reverted to my last manual save :(

So... I had no choice. With liberal frag grenade spam (and stimpack spam), I was able to take out Moriarty, Jericho, and the Robot. And none of the other townspeople are Aggro'ing on me, now.

I don't know what quest or other opportunities I will now miss out on (if any), but the damage seems to be fairly contained, so far. I still have Moira for her quest chain (and house upgrades), I still have the water pump dude, etc.

Moral of the story: DO NOT rely on autosaves! Save manually! frequently!

Picked up the PC LE today. Put like 2 hours in so far. Crashed on me when the Vista Sidebar started acting up. Probably Vista's fault, not FO3.

Anyways, uhh, will I be able to use Science on things like before?

Is that where your in the game and it's starts to flicker on the right side? ...this happend to me as well

...Also, the first time I crawled to my dad in the tutorial, he just stood there. Had to reload my game again to initiate the dialog

Yup. The bar was flickering. I'm guessing the weather widget updated.

I also had an issue with Trillian flickering in the upper-right when notices that normally appear in the LOWER-right would trigger.

But it's nice to have Live support. I don't own a 360, so it's pretty much the only way I can see the buddies on XBL.

Nobody liked Moriarty and Jericho was an ex-Raider itching to get back to the wastes so I don't think they'll be missed too much. In short, if you were ever going to screw up they were probably the right people to do it in front of.
