Exactly ...one of my first instinctive reactions was to immediately holster my weapon...so imagine when I let out a "g'naaah" when I couldn't find out how to do it right away

I just like doing it because it's more immersive, especially when walking around on the outside. It does have gameplay impact with some NPCs, though. If you piss one of them off and they attack you, you can holster your weapon and try to yield, and they may accept and back off. I think that's a holdover feature from Oblivion.

I've had a great first 5 hours. Three highlights:

1. Was feeling cocky after taking out bandit groups and went into an underground shelter ready to take on the world. Turned the corner and saw a ghoul, jumped out of my chair, and ran out as fast as possible without looking back. Humility restored.
2. I'm going to bash this ant's head in with my lead pipe. Holy hell, there must be someone nearby with a flamethrower. VATS, nope just the ant...OMG, run away!
3. After running away from Mutants constantly, I finally was backed into a corner with two minigun mutants closing in. Pulled out my shotgun and waited behind a pillar for them to arrive. Popped out, VATS, head shot explosions. A game hasn't made me smile like that in years. Ear-to-ear.

The combat is so satisfying. Never had my heart racing in Fable 2 or Mass Effect like this. Sense of exploration and "don't go too far" are back to Morrowind standards. Hated Oblivion's neverending safety.

*WARNING - early game spoilers in this post*

I'll be damned, maybe only 3 hours or so isn't enough to start with the hyperbole, but I do believe Bethesda have actually nailed it. I'm probably the least skeptical poster on all of GAF (I don't passionately hate Oblivion, and for that matter, I don't passionately hate everything that isn't Fallout 1 and 2), but I'm still finding reason to be impressed here.

On the bad side I was surprised to find the game really is superficially just Oblivion with guns. I argued a couple of years back that it wouldn't be, but sometimes it really does just feel like an expansive Oblivion total conversion. However, I have been pleasantly surprised to find that this doesn't detract from the experience at all.

One thing's for sure, the game really tries to suck you in. When I started the game, I was in the "I'm playing the tutorial in a game" frame of mind. When I switched it off some time later after escaping the vault, exploring Megaton and it's surrounding areas for a bit, then walking across the wasteland for a bit on my way to a quest, I was the child of an underground vault set loose on a nuclear wasteland of an American city. I was there, man. That doesn't happen to me too often.

Didn't take long for me to feel like my actions made a difference to how the game played out, either. The character I'd roleplayed for myself was a bit of a geek, a bit of a do-gooder... at the start of the game I'm almost at the Overseer's office when I walk past some kind of cell room where I see him with a guard questioning his daughter about the disappearance of my father... the situation looks like it's about to explode, as she pulls out the gun I let her keep earlier, telling them to stay back...

For whatever reason my gut instinct has me sneak into the room behind them, landing a crit on the skull of the Overseer when he least expected it... my bat strikes him with a sickening crack he flies forward in slow motion, his now lifeless body crumpling over a nearby computer terminal... I frantically beat down the guard... finally we're safe, but she is just freaking out on me for killing her father, even though I had thought I was saving her life.

At that point, I paused the game, and quietly whispered "wow!" to myself in amazement. There are so many ways that scene could have played out, based on what I'd done earlier and how I handled it. This is roleplaying. I can only hope the rest of the game holds up to these kinds of standards.

I was completely blown away when I finally got out of the vault and looked over the wreckage of the world in front of me, too. I didn't expect it to strike such a chord with my emotions, considering I'd previously seen screenshots and videos of it. Let's just say, there's a world of difference between looking at some screens of this game, and actually experiencing the world first-hand. The initial time I spent slowly wandering around the little town just outside the vault, with the voice of the President and the music on Enclave radio playing in the background, it was just so chilling and atmospheric.

However...

The game does suffer in some of the same ways Oblivion does, and it's mostly down to the way the AI behaves and reacts. Probably much less so than Oblivion from what I've seen, but the world is so perfectly realised here that it's possibly more jarring. For example, within the first 5 minutes of leaving the vault, a scavenger just happens to walk my way. This is my character's first contact with any other human being right outside the vault. I engaged in conversation with the scavenger, thinking it to be quite a profound moment. But no. The scavenger said hello and my character calmly asked if they could repair weapons. Nothing at all about the fact that I had only just seen the sky for the first time 5 minutes earlier. Broken immersion, right there.

Once I got to Megaton, Oblivion syndrome set in, by which I mean NPC reaction to me was all over the map. You've played Oblivion, you know what I mean. "I hate you, if I ever see you again I'm going to kill you, nice talking to you come see my if you have any more questions". When the NPC interaction works, it's superb, but when this stuff happens it pulls you right out. You'd think they'd have some flags in place to stop this kind of thing happening, considering how detailed other areas of the game are. It's probably even more jarring than it should be since I've been playing Fable 2 recently, the NPC social interaction in that game is amazing.

Wow, this post is getting long. Says a lot about the game, I guess. Quickly - I had some trouble adjusting to the mix of real-time and VATS, I really wasn't liking it (other than beating those ant things to death with my bat in slo-mo, very satisfying)... at the end of my play time last night though I was starting to get the hang of it, I'm looking forward to spending more time getting to grips with it now.

Anyway, so far so good. Nice one, Bethesda!

Started the PS3 version last night...

I disabled the notifications before I even started, so that wasn't an issue for me. Overall, I really like the game.

Granted, when I quit for the night, I had just left the vault and stepped outside, but so far, no framerate issues, and the graphics look really sharp on my Bravia set. I love the VATS system so far. It was fun blasting away at the roaches....:lol

So far, the voiceacting seems alot better than Oblivion, as does the quality of the conversations.

I'm going to tread this topic carefully, as there are spoilers all over the place (thank you to those who are marking them).

Hopefully Bethesda will patch the PS3 version soon to take care of the notifications glitch.

Your movement speed is increased slightly if your weapon is holstered. Worth doing if you're traveling in the Wasteland.

With all the other responses, this actually sounds like the most logical choice. Maybe I'll just shoot her legs off.

So I'm trying to be good, but how can you not shoot that prick Butch in the head at the first opportunity? I even made fun of his alcoholic mother. I'm a monster!

Only played for an hour or two, but my first impressions are pretty bad. Some early spoilers follow.

Went into Moriarty's Bar and got the pitch to blow up Megaton from Burke. Now, the idea that a criminal would hang out in a local bar and ask every stranger that walks by if they want to help obliterate the town is preposterous enough on its face. But aside from that, I left the bar and ratted him out to the Sheriff.
Lucas Simms goes in and tries to arrest Burke. Burke proceeds to gun down Simms in the middle of the bar with around half a dozen NPCs standing around no more than 5-10 feet away, and none of them react. The chick at the table starts pestering me if I want to do a quest for her as the mayor's lying dead at her feet.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Fallout 3 has worse A.I. than Oblivion.

On 360 this is 'X' right? I swear I tried this and it only worked for melee weapons. I couldn't holster a gun with 'X'.

Maybe I'm crazy. I'll try again tonight.

Yeah, I had the same thing happen, so I
pulled my gun on Burke only to have the rest of the bar attempt to kill as soon as I tried to save/avenge (at this point) Simms. :/
Needless to say, I reloaded my last save. I'm still hoping there is some way to
take Burke's quest only to be able to turn around and sabotage it.

For those thinking about keeping their "end of Vault 101" save as a catchall, you're still going to be stuck with the consequences of actions made within the Vault!

There are no shortcuts! Invest that extra 45 min. and make a completely new character!

I solved the FPS "skipping" issue completely!! Yay!

I was looking for "FPS" related search strings in the fallout3.ini file and tried switching...

iFPSClamp=0

...to...

iFPSClamp=60

Now it runs absolutely flawlessly. I played for two hours and explored both indoor and outdoor locations and I'm getting a 100% flawless 60 fps with no skipping or blemishes of any kind. Looks fantastic. 4xAA 16xAF and mostly Ultra settings. The image quality looks like a bullshot on my Pioneer (which is to say, insanely smooth and clean). Furthermore, loading is insanely fast between everything (like 2-3 seconds) so the whole game feels very seamless now. The game just FEELS fantastic (I'm using the 360 pad, by the way).

I'd recommend ALL PC users make the above change as it seems like it should result in a smoother experience for everyone.

Loving the game too. I thought it would just be Oblivion with guns, but the atmosphere and dialog are so much more engaging. Can't wait to play more!!

I can't find where fallout3.ini resides. There are a bunch of config files to play with graphical settings, however, and I wonder if we can't raise some of those to make our games look better for higher end machines. Anyway, which file am I supposed to mod here, darkx10?

Also, how do you sell stuff? Is it only at stores? (I haven't been to the merchant or store yet).

I did this same thing as well and laughed my ass off. You know what really made me laugh?

After he gunned him down in cold blood, I pulled out my piece and started shooting him since I didn't know if he was going to turn on m. Then the ENTIRE BAR started shooting AT ME! Nevermind he just gunned down the mayor/sheriff in plain sight of EVERYBODY, but the Dweller is shooting him! Get him!

That moment, very early on, really put a damper on the experience for me.

I did the same thing as you, but
when I followed Simms into the bar I had my gun drawn and was able to avenge his death with no problems (except it said I couldn't complete his quest anymore). So maybe that might work for you next time? I tried this a couple times to see if I could keep Simms from dying but no luck. One of the play-throughs, someone said "good riddance" when I killed Burke. Also I looted both Simms and Burke, so I got Burke's silenced pistol and Simms' Chinese rifle
Also, if you could, let me know if you are able to complete that quest the way you played it out. :)

I'm not defending Fallout 3's A.I., since it definitely has issues, but it's not comparable to Oblivion's A.I. They do far dumber things in Oblivion than what you're talking about.

Well, I would, but like I said, I reloaded, so I'll be playing it differently this time around.
No snitching to the sheriff. I'd like to say I'll arm the bomb only to disarm it and then rig tenpenny tower so when they ask me to set it off, I blow them up, but I can't find a way to do that.

Yep. ME's exploration seemed too canned. It was just random plots of land and when you got there you didn't find much. Even the main quests felt repetitive. Here you can go out and are encouraged too. Not too far though. :D

Odd. I did the same thing, but
no one in the bar so much as blinked after I gunned down Burke for killing the sheriff. Assault rifle to the face, point-blank. You're welcome, Megatonites.

I misread then, so sorry. You did help me out with this post here though in that
I want to get those caps for disarming the bomb, and since I killed Burke and looted him I have the arming device. So when I walk up to the bomb it says "arm bomb", but I'm playing as a good guy so I'm like "I don't want to arm the fucking bomb!", but how else will I disarm it?!? Gah I'm dense sometimes so thanks for showing me the light.

Hmm thats weird
as soon as Burke shoots the mayor/sheriff I pulled out my gun and killed Burke but the citizens didnt even react.

At least I got a AK-47 out of it.

I like how the game uses the weapons as references to the conflict between China in the backstory by providing us with weapons such as a Chinese rifle and Chinese pistol when in fact they are AK-47's and some sort of Mauser pistol which China did really get from other nations.

IMO, that's the last thing that needs replacing. The ambient music in Fallout 3 is pretty great, especially when you're walking around the Wasteland, though certainly putting Fallout 1/2 music in there would be powerfully nostalgic. I'm awaiting some other, more critical improvements, though.

As soon as someone makes an effective mod that basically removes the real-time combat aspect from the game or minimizes it greatly, I'll be all over that. VATS is great for what it is - the rest of the combat, not so much. Since some enemies move while you're in VATS, very slowly, it should be possible to speed those guys up and increase your VATS limit to turn the game into a true real-time/turn-based hybrid (since I'm assuming it would be very tough to mod the whole thing into turn-based, including enemy actions).

When this happened to me, I heard a chorus of "I didn't see anything" and "Not my problem" type things from the NPC's. I actually liked this, because it gave the whole scene a wild west feel. I half expected to find a piano player strike up a tune to keep everybody moving along. :D

You missed one
in Simms' bedroom in Megaton.

EvilLore's tale does not jibe with my experience with the game. I experimented early on with attacking Simms and such stuff, and the entire damn town would attack me in response. And how he managed to kill that many people with a pistol is beyond me, especially the guard robot.

I have found that simply acquiring a new piece of gear isn't all that major. It doesn't become a viable tool until you have a few more and can repair it up to higher standards. I had a laser pistol very early on, but it only lasted a little while before I needed to fix it, which was too expensive to consider at the time.

Exactly. I got nothing against the music in F3 but the only time it feels like I'm playing Fallout is when I hear sounds from the previous games, I replaced the XP sound with one of the F1/F2 menu sound effects and it's already miles better :p

Other things that I wanna see changed is the camera in VATS (it's kinda useless atm), no crosshair, and some AI improvements/changes.

No. Other than the Megaton one, you can get the others at any time except
the one in the Vault, which you can only go back to get after the sidequest for Vault 101 opens up later in the game.

Oh man you'd think two games using the exact same music was bad enough... you actually want to hear it in a third? :D

Okay, now to have some fun with this challenge :D

Went back to an alive-Jericho save, aggroed and had him follow me (along with three other enemies a few seconds ahead) into a house. Let's see how many different weapons I can kill him with! Captured on video:

-Bottlecap mine (finishing the final sliver with bare fists)
-Rock-it launcher
-Baseball bat
-Spiked knuckles
-10mm Pistol

Level 3, level-up skill points are only in small guns. No vats, no consumables, etc., normal difficulty.

Not exactly a problem ;b

I wonder if it would be possible to do so on hard. I guess it depends on what a bump in difficulty actually does in Fallout 3, i.e. increases enemy HP and/or increases enemy damage/accuracy and/or decreases player damage/accuracy, etc.

Steve answered it a page or two back. As difficulty goes up:

- Enemy HP goes up
- Enemy damage dealt goes up
- XP earned goes up

Experiment 2 - what happens when you bump it up to hard and very hard?

In some games (BioShock and Halo 3 come to mind), normal difficulty is tuned way too low for the hardcore player. I haven't had this issue so far in Fallout 3, but then again, I don't have a 70 rating for my small arms.

There are a ton of ini tweaks for pc users to make this game run even better. Pretty much identical to Oblivions. You can really increase the visual quality of the game, too. I've been bumping up shadows big time.

Fallout 3 ini is in the Documents section under My Games. Be warned: that INI clamp is cool and all, but if you slip below 60fps, the game goes into slow-mo.

You're gonna tease us like that without hooking up some of those commands? :P

I did a few ini tweaks already, but that was mainly to try and get the game to stop crashing. Haven't really messed with the visuals yet, though a bump in shadows especially would certainly be welcome in this game.
