Campaign mode? You mean the story missions? I haven't beaten the story yet but since this is a Bethesda sandbox game, you get a shitload of side missions. This is the kind of game you can easily put 100 hours into without noticing.
I'm 20 hours in and only just completed the first 'story' mission after leaving the vault. Though a bit of exploring uncvered a way to skip a chunk of it if I wished. I did not.
Unfortunately, no. Death is pretty permanent in Fallout. In Fallout 3, characters who are absolutely critical to the main plot will just go unconscious for some time, but that doesn't include NPC followers like Dogmeat. Your only real option is to reload a save.

You can. Bringing Dogmeat along definitely makes the game more challenging. Since death is permanent, you have to work hard to keep him alive, since it'll break your heart to lose him.

I've found like 5 of them, and I'm only level 6 and still doing Megaton and area stuff. I just sell them or leave them, since they have such a poor VAL/WG ratio. I knew all that random junk had a purpose...

Stupid lazer walls at the end of fallout, dogmeat had a habit of idlely walking through them and getting turned to dust. Good to see the mechanic lives on!

I'm still early in the game, despite quite a few hours put in. I went through most of the "Those!" quest line, the one with the little boy looking for his father and all the Fire Ants. Holy hell that got difficult after going
down into the Metro Rail
, I went in there will over 140 10mm ammo, 50 or so .32 caliber bullets, 10 frag grenades, 7 or 8 mines, 15 shotgun shells, some machine gun ammo, and a couple dozen energy cells... by the time I
got down into the queen's layer
I was beating ants over the head with lead pipes and sledgehammers and overdosing on Stimpacks - I actually became super irradiated from all the dirty water and ant meat I had to eat to stay alive - and couldn't even
kill the queen ant
if I wanted to because I was completely dry on ammo. Crazy stuff, after having cleaned out the Super-Duper Mart with only a lousy 10mm pistol I was scared the game was going to be too easy.
There was one room down there I couldn't get into and a computer I couldn't hack so I may go down there again to see what I missed once I find some armor to increase those stats more.
I also received my first house recently. Is absolutely everything I place into the house safe whether it's in a container or not? I laid all my guns out on a bookshelf and don't want them to disappear because they aren't inside a locker or a crate.

I suppose you had something against helping out Dr. Lesko? I put his device in position and only had to kill a few ants, and was specifically told not to kill the queen.

kill her, I killed the 5 ant guards and the robot down there, I was just pointing out that I couldn't even if I wanted to because I was out of ammo. At the end I got a lab coat with a big science bonus and radiation resistance plus the option to either permanently increase my perception or strength.
I think sneaking around and popping anything in the head with the hunting rifle is a good time. Then clean up with the pistol. Hell I just love small guns in this game. Gunslinger and Gun Nut with tons of agility=lots of VATS fun.
So on the mission "Blood Ties"
Just go to Arethu and man does anyone else just not like the sheriff/mayor? I almost popped the guy in the head. Instead I just stole all his ammo. Gotta find The Family though. Once I do that I might just shoot him. Pussy shouldn't be allowed to be in that position
edit: :lol Love my robot. "Photons have mass? I didn't even know they were Catholic"
WARNING: All Fallout 3 Players Must Read
In case you missed the large warning in our Fallout 3 review, if you complete the main quest by walking into the final room of Fallout 3, the game will lock you in there until you do what needs to be done - then it'll boot you back to the title screen. This sucks because there is so much more to explore in the Washington wastes and, unless you've saved beforehand, you'll be forever denied access to the outside world. Unless you start again, but really, who wants to do that crap?
So take the tip, whenever playing Fallout 3 - or any game of epic size and scope for that matter - get in the habit of having three saves; the games Autosave which triggers when you enter a new environment, plus two more that you should save over in sequence. Doing things this way will help ensure that your murderous sprees in Fallout can continue, while preventing you going on an actual murderous spree in the real world when you ruin your save
Not sure if I have hit a glitch. I can't get into this door without a key however there is no key.
I'm trying to get into the GNR building after going to the Washington monument. It says I need a key to enter however the first time I was here I was buzzed into the door. I hit the buzzer and the guy tells me he already unlocked it.
So how fucking EPIC is this fucking game? God I love the Fallout universe! AHHHH!!!!!!! WTF!!! Still debating whether I should splurge on the X360 version for the improved level of detail (my specs are limiting the graphical experience, no doubt the x360 version would look better than what my PC is outputting ((maybe?!)) ) So yea, DOGMEAT I love you just as much as I love my real dog!!! So glad I was able to
pick up that power armor, now I just gotta find the guy who trains me to wear it!!

Anyone have a problem with the VATS? I get a mega fps drop (down to like 5-10fps) on my computer.
I have an 8800gt, 2gb of Ram, C2D @ 2.33ghz It runs smoothly inside and outside areas, but when I switch to VATS its like bogs it down all of the sudden.

Shortly after the president lets you go, Col. Autumn's voice comes over the PA system and countermands the president's order, telling them to attack you on sight. You must've missed it.
Yeah, I did miss it, thanks for the heads up. Anyway the
"American Dream" mission was hilarious. I don't have a high speech skill or anything but I convinced Eden to destroy himself, the base was blown up, got the virus back to the Citadel and told them about 87 to get a bunch of good karma. It's funny how long some missions can by while others have cool short cuts.
What is the name of the "point of no return" mission that I've read people mention elsewhere? I want to be able to keep a save file as far along as possible for going back to do side missions. Am I to assume that
"Take it back!"
is it? It's worth double the achievement points than the rest of them.
Great game, and this is coming from somebody that only plays RPGs occasionally.
Nope Along with VAT some random areas will suddenly drop heavily. Still is an awesome game though, its just aggrevating because it takes me a minute just to click on a body part
This game is all sorts of awesome. hard as heck tho!, does anyone have any pointers to survive??, and should i be playing this as a fps or be using that VATS thing?. and what are the benefits of using VATS apart from aiming at specific parts of the body?

Vats is better the closer the enemy is to you. Otherwise i would sugest taking a chance and sniping the target on your own. Vats is surprisingly inaccurate at long range.
im playing it on ps3 the supposedly gimped version and it still looks amazing! i couldn't imagine it on a high end PC!. granted i do have a Panasonic viera thats ISF calibrated. a wii game can look amazing on this TV.
Yea the game is surprisingly gorgeous!

Just finished. Even with having spent some time on side missions there are entire areas of the game I haven't seen yet (Tenpenny Tower). Unlike Mass Effect the side missions in this game are fun so I'll probably go back to do the rest of them at some point. Definitely one of my top games of the year.
haha just had a pretty sweet moment. Traveling from Pfalls due east and some random shots start coming from no where. I have high perception so I'm like wth. I walk out of the building frame and some douche bag with sunglasses is taking shots from at me. I back out of the building I'm looking in take out his leg. By this time 3 super mutants appear out of no where. Naturally I pop a psycho and some nuka cola take them out. Turns out the guy took off. Found him behind a rock. Beat him with my bare hands.
Convince them if you have a high enough speech skill. You can alternatively get the basement key (I think from the lead guard whose name escapes me) and then leave the door open for them.
Well after about 8 hours of trying to like the game I've finally given up. I just don't like it, can't really explain more then it felt to much like Oblivion (which I really didn't like at all).

I actually encountered him about 30 minutes after I left Vault 101. Ran up and machine pistoled his face and his sniper rifle has served me well ever since.
Oh yeah, I've already started that. Small arms for the win.
But I only got a Chinese Pistol so far which, literally, folks, literally, does less damage than a Baseball Bat. Ladies and gentlemen, that is not going to get me past a Raider.
You should have been able to get a 10mm pistol in the vault that is much better than the chinese pistol. you come across them in the overworld too. As noted, the Hunting Rifle and Combat Shotgun are nice improvements as well. The damage on weapons scales up with your skill in them, so if you have a lot of points in Melee, you'll do more damage with it for now. Use the pistol to soften enemies up as you close in for the kill.
I personally am partial to using a sledgehammer when I get in close.
One thing I hate in the game are the invisible walls. They'll put a pile of debris in your way which is easily climbed, and then it invisible walls you when you get to the top. It's so much more frustrating in a so-called open world game when it herds you through corridors like this than it is in a linear game like most FPSes. I expect it in Gears, but not here.
Also - how do you repair weapons yourself? I have a high repair skill, but the option to repair is greyed out. I know in Oblivion you need the repair hammers to do it. Is there a similar item in this game that I haven't found yet?

I've put around 14 hours into it now and am starting to get a bit burned out, but looking at other posts it sounds like I haven't gotten close to a few of the really awesome parts. Started out thinking it wasn't too much like Oblivion beyond the obvious things of the engine and such, but once you get into the swing of things the similarities start to stand out.
